If you've ever felt your friendships shift as life changes—like when your kids leave the nest, your schedule empties (or overflows), or you crave connection beyond surface-level chats—this episode will speak to you deeply. For this podcast conversation, we turn the tables with Kelley Gray interviewing Heather. It is a warm, honest conversation about adult friendships: the longing for deeper bonds, the awkwardness of reaching out, and the vulnerability of naming what you need. We talk about “friendship shopping,” the courage to say “I'm lonely,” and how to create space for relationships that feel mutual, spiritual, and real. Whether you're navigating grief, a season of transition, or simply trying to figure out who your people are now, this episode is like a heart-to-heart with a trusted friend. You'll hear about the power of showing up—sometimes with a meal, sometimes with silence, and sometimes just with presence. We'll unpack how crises can either rupture or deepen relationships and how honesty, intention, and grace can carry friendships through hard seasons. If you've ever felt shame around changing connections or wondered how to “date” new friends as an adult, this episode gives you language, permission, and hope. Tune in for encouragement, laughter, and wisdom. You're not alone in this, and your next meaningful friendship might be one brave conversation away.Step into The Life You're Made For, I'm cheering you on!heatherpenny.com@heatherpennyphdMusic & Production by Jason Squires
In part 2 of It's All About Relationships, Heather and Darren explore what makes a relationship truly sacred—not because it's perfect or forever, but because it meets us at just the right moment in our lives. When a connection endures through changing seasons, it becomes something rare and deeply meaningful. We ask a question that keeps guiding us back to the heart of connection: Does the person across from me feel cared for, seen, and heard? From small gestures like remembering the little things, to being present during someone's busy grind, we unpack how real relationships grow.Join us as we talk about what it means to create safe spaces, honor each other's stories, and walk together even when we're different. Relationships aren't static—they're alive, messy, and full of potential. If this resonates, we invite you to listen in—and maybe even reach out to someone you care about this week. Ask a deeper question. Be curious. Share this episode. It might just spark the connection you both need.Step into The Life You're Made For, I'm cheering you on!heatherpenny.com@heatherpennyphdMusic & Production by Jason Squires

While so much of parenting feels out of our control—schedules, tantrums, illness, life's constant surprises—we can always control one critical thing...
Who is one of your favorite people to talk with? I had a fun conversation about good guides with one of my all-time favorite people, my husband, Darren Penny. You'll hear us discuss the role of guides in our lives—how to seek them, how to be one, and how to navigate life with humility, courage, connection and vulnerability. Through personal stories, like Darren's search for guidance in the absence of a father, we explore the deep need for relational wisdom during seasons of vulnerability. We talk about how good guides meet us where we are, create safe spaces for growth, and remind us that being unfinished doesn't disqualify us—it makes us ready. Whether you're seeking direction or becoming someone others can trust, this conversation invites you to take the risk, know yourself, and walk the journey with others. I hope you will be encouraged to embrace your limitations, resist isolation, and choose human connection and vulnerability over quick fixes. If you like what you hear, pick up a copy of my book Grace Space where I dive deeper into being a person that creates safe spaces for growth.Cheering you on!Step into The Life You're Made For, I'm cheering you on!heatherpenny.com@heatherpennyphdMusic by Jason SquiresProduction by Cody Vermillion

Do you have a friendship that spans many seasons and plot twists of your life? Marriage, children, parenting, launching kids, career intersections, faith. You know, all the biggies. Someone you've had the privilege of being up close and personal with through the highs and lows. Alyssa Gluck is that person in my life. Alyssa is a credentialed teacher, holds a graduate degree in leadership, and works as an educational specialist for homeschool families. In our conversation, we reflect on how life doesn't take a straight path. It often has unexpected twists and turns. Plot twists, as a previous guest put it. When you have been thrown for a loop, a Good Guide coming along at just the right time is a gift. But isolation is a dangerous reaction in the middle of these plot twists. The very thing you need is a sage presence offering you a safe place to land and sort out where to go next. When the false belief “I have to do life on my own” gets replaced with the true belief “I get to reach out to a loving presence,” it makes all the difference. I love Alyssa's guidance for when a guide is no longer a good fit for where you want to go.Listen in and learn what type of guidance you need. Perhaps you'll be sparked to be a good guide for someone in the spaces you live and lead.Cheering you on!Step into The Life You're Made For, I'm cheering you on!heatherpenny.com@heatherpennyphdMusic by Jason SquiresProduction by Cody Vermillion

Do you have a person in your life that you can say anything to with zero filter, and you know you will be understood? Kelley Gray is this type of person. She listens compassionately and leaves her judgment at the door. All while offering valuable insight and discernment, guided by wisdom. That's why I loved including her in my podcast series, Good Guides.I have appreciated my friendship with Kelley over the years. We met when I needed some clear guidance. The direction I received from her stayed with me for years. It was her ability to empower me to lean into what my gut was whispering to me that made it a powerful connection. And don't we all need good guides during vulnerable times?Kelley has the ability to shed light on a situation while affirming that your True Self gets to show up well. This makes her stand out as a Good Guide. Do you have a friend that you may not speak to for months or even years, but when you do talk, it's like you pick up right where you left off? That's how it is with my good friend Michelle Riddell. She knows the power of presence, and she has been a welcome presence in my life. Michelle also has a reputation as a leader for inspiring and empowering people working on executive teams in global marketing organizations. What I admire most is her personal vision statement, ”I lead my life honorably with boldness to unleash the potential in people and organizations for the betterment of society”. Isn't that powerful? I believe you will appreciate this conversation as much as I did. Michelle's ability to show up fully present is such a gift. I hope you will feel encouraged to find guides that truly fit who you are and where you are trying to go. You'll hear her share about the good guides in her life and even those that weren't so good. How do you feel about your creative abilities? Are you someone who sees yourself as creative, not creative at all, or have you never really thought about it? What does creativity have to do with being part of the story of humanity? I wanted to speak to my friend Jason Squires about all of this. Jason is a coach who works with leaders who create. Starting in the music industry, Jason has been teaching, singing, and traveling around the United States supporting music leaders. This eventually led him to starting a coaching business for creative leadership. But I especially love how he views creativity because, much like me, he believes everyone has the innate potential to be creative. And the beliefs he holds around humanity's ability to create are inspiring. We also dove deep into the content from my book, Grace Space, which Jason endorsed!Whether you see yourself as creative or not, join us as we discuss the importance around creativity and how it can look uniquely in every type of person. This is a conversation around the beliefs we hold, how some change and others ground us, as well as the power of living with a commitment to creativity no matter what line of work you are in.Jason Squires is a worship leader, songwriter, and storyteller. Everyone believes in something. Like your diet affects your body, your beliefs affect in your mind and heart. You are what you believe. The hope is that as we evolve and mature, we learn to evaluate what we believe and how we got there. More importantly, are there any beliefs we have outgrown or perhaps are no longer serving us? In fact, in the work I do, I see how many beliefs are limiting us. This is why I want to talk about our beliefs. We are wrapping up our Crossroads podcast series and looking ahead to a new series on Beliefs. So I wanted to re-release my conversation with Sharon McMahon from last Fall. Why? First of all, because election season is right around the corner and we need her voice ringing loud and clear. Second, because this conversation is such a great set up to talk about Beliefs and how they influence us to go after the life we are made for. Not to mention that when Sharon and I last talked, neither of us had released our new books. And boy is she having a moment! The Small and the Mighty has opened powerful conversations. Sharon is stepping into political arenas and government spaces like no one else. Which is truly inspiring. In addition, it was in this conversation that I realized I wanted Sharon to endorse my book–Grace Space–which she so graciously agreed to. I am so honored to be associated with her. The world desperately needs Sharon McMahon's transparency about aligning her beliefs with her higher calling. So her words are timely. Stepping into the life you are made for requires intentionality, focus, and being ok with limitations. She talks candidly about the challenges of distractions and the importance of being confident in your strengths—as well as your limitations. Plus you'll hear how relationships are important for staying balanced. This week my dear friend, Laura Coostona and I unpack the idea of responding vs reacting when facing conflict or tension. When we inevitably experience conflict in our teams or relationships, the temptation for many of us is to react. We go on the defense, or sometimes even the offense. But what if we paused?... Pausing gives us the chance to have a measured response and give grace to the person we're having challenges with. Laura and I talk about how the seven practices in my book, Grace Space, really lean on that pause. Listen in as we give you some practical language to use when facing tensions that require heavy doses of grace for everyone involved. Including yourself!Laura Cootsona operates a collaborative consulting firm called Good|Well Consulting. I have finally fulfilled my “bucket list” dream of recording an album in Nashville! See, I grew up in a very musical family, played the violin for many years, sang in a rock band in high school, sang in the church choir in college, and interviewed amazing music icons like Rick Rubin. Despite not being anything like a “professional musician,” I still love music - whether that be writing and singing my own original songs, singing praise songs and hymns at church, or busting out some Coldplay or Jelly Roll or Elevation Worship or Chris Stapleton (yeah I dig a weird mix of contemporary, pop, Christian, and country) while driving down the highway. It's no secret that music is, and always has been, a huge passion of mine. I use music for relaxation, for medicine, for energy, for sleep, for worship, and as a creative outlet for the words and tunes that seem to swirl around my mind at least once a week. Now, one of my “side projects” of late has been creating my own music via original singing-songwriting, and, as a result, I have finally put the finishing touches on a brand new rock album I recorded in Nashville, entitled “Made For.” You can find the entire album here. In this podcast, you'll get to hear all my new songs but also how music affects your fitness and exercise capability, how music affects your brain, the surprising impact of sound therapy and music, how music can help you learn, the benefits of music for reducing stress, anxiety, and pain, how to use music to build intelligence, and much more!
