In this fascinating deep-dive, we explore a groundbreaking initiative that's set to revolutionise our understanding of impact forces in youth American football. The Denver Broncos Foundation and Riddell are launching an unprecedented state-wide programme that will generate millions of data points on player impacts, technique, and load management at the secondary school level. But the real story goes beyond the helmets. How does a thin proprietary film inside each helmet capture and translate impact data? What insights can coaches extract from nearly a million recorded impacts across 13,000 secondary school athletes? And most intriguingly - could this massive data collection effort fundamentally change how we approach technique development and injury prevention in contact sports? Join us as we dissect the technology with Riddell's Brian Kopp and explore the programme's implementation with the Broncos Foundation's Allie Engelken. We'll examine: The science behind impact sensing technology How real-time analytics are revolutionising coaching methodology The potential implications for evidence-based practice in youth sports Whether you're a sports scientist, strength coach, or performance specialist, this episode offers unprecedented insights into the future of data-driven player development. Do you have a friend that you may not speak to for months or even years, but when you do talk, it's like you pick up right where you left off? That's how it is with my good friend Michelle Riddell. She knows the power of presence, and she has been a welcome presence in my life. In his latest University Designs column and conversation, David Staley discusses the concept of plasticity in universities, drawing parallels with neuroplasticity in the human brain. He explores the challenges of institutional transformation and the importance of mindset shifts, as articulated in Jessica Riddell's work on hope circuits. The discussion emphasizes the need for universities to adapt and evolve, questioning their capacity for change and the role of language in shaping institutional practices.Key takeaways:Innovation in universities requires expansive thinking.Translating visionary ideas into tangible change is challenging.Hope is intertwined with learning and flourishing.Language influences our capacity to achieve change.Riddell presents a mindset shift for fostering change. We can rewire institutions for human flourishing.Institutional self-knowledge is critical for transformation. The neuroplasticity metaphor raises questions about institutional capacity for change. Are universities capable of the plasticity Riddell envisions? How plastic is our organization?Sounds bites:"We can rewire institutions for human flourishing.""Hope is a key mechanism in the rewiring process.""How plastic is our organization?"Chapters00:00The Plasticity of the University02:46Hope Circuits and Institutional Transformation04:12Challenges of Change in Higher Education

Welcome back to part six of our podcast series on high-impact strategies for struggling readers in Years 3 to 6. Today, we delve into the power of reading aloud, a topic that Mem Fox has passionately explored. Let's reiterate the value of making read-aloud sessions a daily, intentional practice.Once you establish a routine of read-alouds, students will look forward to it and demand it. This excitement is fuelled by selecting texts that not only captivate their interests but also expand their horizons. Instead of choosing books that mirror their everyday experiences, consider texts that introduce them to new ideas and genres, fostering curiosity and broadening their understanding of the world.Chapter books are particularly important for students in Years 3 to 6. They help children develop the skills to engage with longer texts, sustain their interest, and think deeply. Australian authors like Emily Rodda, with series like Rowan of Rin and Deltora Quest, offer rich, immersive stories that are perfect for read-aloud sessions. Similarly, Katrina Nannestad's "We Are Wolves" and Catherine Applegate's verse narrative "Odder" provide diverse literary experiences. The key is to read books you've personally enjoyed and found successful with students. When choosing a book, consider the unique dynamics and interests of your class. Ensure that read-aloud sessions are inclusive, especially for struggling readers, who should not miss out on this enriching experience. These sessions allow all students to be part of the "literacy club," engaging in discussions and building their vocabulary and comprehension skills.Balancing enjoyment with instructional opportunities is crucial. Focus primarily on the enjoyment of the story, but don't shy away from teaching moments. For example, if you notice your students struggling with punctuation, you can briefly highlight how it's used during a read-aloud session without disrupting the flow of the story. This can be revisited and reinforced during dedicated mini-lessons in your reading workshop.Reading aloud is one of the most effective, low-input strategies we have. It doesn't require special materials, just a fluent reader and a collection of thoughtfully chosen books. It's a practice that supports all readers, enhancing vocabulary, comprehension, and overall literacy skills. By making it a daily practice, we provide every child with the opportunity to grow as a reader and thinker. In conclusion, read-aloud sessions are more than just a classroom activity; they are a powerful tool for building a community of readers. They offer shared experiences that foster discussions, wonder, and discovery. So, let's commit to making read-aloud a high-impact, daily part of our teaching strategy, ensuring that every child benefits from the magic of a well-told story.BOOKS, in the order mentioned in the podcast:Rodda, E. Join us for Pentecost Sunday at Elevation Church, as during our morning service, Ps. Mark Riddell brings a message about the hope of Christ and example he serves to us in living our lives effectively for God.
Join us this week as Guest Ps. Mark Riddell brings another message from the Sermon on the Mount series, asking the question: What are we full of? What we are full of spills out, and the reality is that when we have outbursts, they are often signs of where we are at emotionally and spiritually. God's desire is for us to flourish and be full of his love, and outpouring that into the world around us, but how do we do that when life can feel like it gets in the way?
