What a treat for us, having musician/composer/pioneer Manuel Göttsching up to dublab soon after his first ever performance in Los Angeles. We totally geeked out about analog electronics, his forward-thinking uses of them in the legendary German experimental rock group Ashra Tempel in the 70's, his experiences creating the E2-E4 piece in the early 80's (which became a monumental inspiration in the development of late 80's/early 90's house music in the U.S.), the cryptic Cosmic Jokers project and so much more. He hasn't stopped working either, moving into sound installations and film soundtracks. We knew he was a heavy dude but sheesh… --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dublab-inconversation/support

I have been a casual fan of Manuel Gottsching for a long time but I never really dug into his discography until the last few days with the news of his passing. I don't have time to write much about him so I'll cut & paste a few things from Pitchfork. "Manuel Gottsching, the Ash Ra Tempel bandleader who went on to compose the electronic cornerstone album E2-E4, died last Sunday (December 4). Göttsching made his name in the West Berlin underground scene in the late 1960s and early '70s. He was a core member of Ash Ra Tempel, a krautrock linchpin with revolving members including Tangerine Dream's Klaus Schulze. The loose, shapeshifting outfit released five influential albums between 1971 and 1973. Göttsching's solo debut, 1975's Inventions for Electric Guitar, was subtitled Ash Ra Tempel VI; from then on he mostly produced records under his own name or as Ashra, such as the 1976 classic New Age of Earth. In 1981, after a visit to Schulze, Göttsching improvised the composition that became known as E2-E4, hoping to throw together some listening material for an imminent trip. That mysteriously perfect hourlong exercise, which combined Prophet 10 synth pulses with waves of electronic percussion and electric guitar, came to define his post-krautrock output. After composing the track, Göttsching later recalled, the billionaire and Virgin Records owner Richard Branson invited him to his houseboat and, upon hearing the track, advised Göttsching that it could make him a fortune. But Göttsching decided to release the full improvisation on his friend Schulze's label, without overdubs, in 1984, and it appeared to have little impact. Though E2-E4 sold poorly, it had—unbeknownst to Göttsching—made its way across the Atlantic and into Larry Levan's Paradise Garage sets, as well as the collections of key electronic music innovators. As Pitchfork's Mark Richardson wrote in a 2016 review, the improvisation “wound its way across the world, morphing and changing with formats and remixes, finding new contexts, a music that is constantly in the process of becoming.” It was a nice trip through Gottsching's music making this mix. I hope he is improvising with his buddy Klaus somewhere. Cheers! Hailing from Okinawa, now-Tokyo-based producer IORI once cut his teeth as an assistant for David Mancuso’s revered party, The Loft, in New York City, where he learnt a meticulous sonic mentality from his audiophile mentor. This permeates his carefully-handled arrangements, which have helped make his name and define a series of spacey, atmospheric originals and remixes for proponent imprints like Phonica and Prologue to name a few. Since his striking 2009 debut, Galaxy, which took its cue from Basic Channel and Manuel Gottsching, the Japanese producer has developed an immensely expressive dubbed-out sound in his own right. The first culmination of that is 2012’s excellent Nexus album for Bitta, a label owned by Far Eastern rising star DJ Nobu, seeing his ambient productions sit nicely with his hypnotic dance tunes. Two year stay in Berlin in early 2010s helped IORI gain a foothold in the international stage. He has since traveled across Europe, validating his characteristic meditative techno set, which is just the tip of his huge musical iceberg that ranges from low-slung house to leftfield oddballs. Despite his return to Japan in 2015, his presence remains strongly felt through frequent European tours. 2016 saw IORI release the Cold Radiance album, where his sci-fi ambient side grew fully- fledged. For an artist that has produced immersive and spacious pieces, it was a logical continuation of his extensive career as a producer. Eschewing the club-orientated perspective, it certainly proved IORI’s expressional depth and does justice to his artistic intention, his acute ears for spellbinding details standing out in sharp relief, which raised expectations of his promising future. (by Yusaku Shigeyasu) You can find IORI productions on labels such as @phormarecords, @semantica-records, @phonicarecords, @kr3_records, @djnobu_bitta, @awryrecords, @user-79693200 (Oktave Records), @fieldrecords and more Tracklist : 1 @artefakt-official - Ganzfeld Effect 2 @ValentinoMora - Yant Suea 3 @erikadotnet - North Hex ( @Orphx remix) 4 @Cassegrain - Lop Nor 5 @toma-kami - This Side Up (@forest-drive-west Remix) 6 @naturalelectronicsystem - Marea 7 @mownofficial - A New Life Is Born 8 @iori927 - Under The Water (@Wata Igarashi remix) 9 @benbui - Star dust 10 @Psyk - Outline 11 @Forest-Drive-West - Hidden Past 12 HIGMA (@djyukimasa & @drafted01 )- Follow the Sign 13 @svrecaofficial - Mountain Splitter (@ValentinoMora remix) 14 Marsel - Bambu 15 @stefanvincent - Grey Haze Follow IORI here : @iori927 https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/iori https://www.facebook.com/ioria92781/ https://www.instagram.com/iori_asano/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Follow OUTER DIMENSION here : https://open.spotify.com/show/7AuvVaOqgYPxL7NTME38cT https://soundcloud.com/outerdimension www.instagram.com/outerdimension/ www.facebook.com/OUTERDIMENSION/ Infos & Promos outerdimension.au@gmail.com
Hope you all enjoyed our split edition of Sequences. Strangely on one of the music sites the ambient side had more hits, which I didn’t expect, anyway, back to our usual mix of EM. We welcome Robert Scott Thompson with a preview of his up and coming albums ‘Pluviophilia’ 1 & 2, combining his mastery of electro acoustic contemporary instrumental & advance grade genres. Louis Sterling from Mick’s original hometown in the UK, showing capacious acoustics, washed with soft reverb and distant voices, creating a dream-like atmosphere. “Linear A” by zZyzx, electro-acoustic compositions featuring harp & cello. The overlapping overtone textures and the sounds created by the piano’s intricate mechanism, by Jan Wagner, another majestic score from Andy Pickford, with a ton more sequencers & arpeggiator sounds. New to Syngate, Japanese musician Shinpal, with the track we chose ‘Boundary Of Nature’ which has roots in the music of Manuel Gottsching, just a few of the players to show a wealth of diverse electronics, not to everyones taste, but as Kauto said: “open your mind…………..” Blast from the past comes from the legendary Conrad Schnitzler, a more accessible track from the album “Gelb”, sadly he passed away in 2011. Enough of the blurb, lets the music begin with Caterina Barbieri, giving us hypnotic modular patterns, live in Helsinki.
