Dasha sits down with Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Helsinki for a wide-ranging conversation on NATO, Russia's war in Ukraine, Iran and the future of America's relationships with allies around the world. Stubb, who has developed an unusually close personal relationship with Donald Trump, discusses how he approaches the president behind closed doors, why he believes Ukraine has the upper hand in the war against Russia and how he remains confident in NATO's future. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 18, 2026 is: acquiesce ak-wee-ESS verb To acquiesce to something is to accept it, agree with it, or allow it to happen by staying silent or by not arguing. Acquiesce is somewhat formal, and is often used with in or to. // Eventually, the professor acquiesced to the students' request to have the seminar's final class be a potluck lunch. See the entry > Examples: “It may be just the right time for a chicken burger to become a significant stop on the American burger's continual evolution—but whether beef-clinging purists will acquiesce to a poultry spin, or cry fowl, remains to be seen.” — Talib Visram, Slate, 6 Apr. 2026 Did you know? If you're looking to give your speech a gentle, formal flair, don't give acquiesce the silent treatment. Essentially meaning “to comply quietly,” acquiesce has as its ultimate source the Latin verb quiēscere, “to be quiet.” (Quiet itself is also a close relation.) Quiēscere can also mean “to repose,” “to fall asleep,” or “to rest,” and when acquiesce arrived in English via French in the early 1600s, it did so with two senses: the familiar “to agree or comply” and the now-obsolete “to rest satisfied.” Herman Melville employed the former in Moby-Dick, when Ahab orders the “confounded” crew to change the Pequod's course after a storm damages the compasses: “Meanwhile, whatever were his own secret thoughts, Starbuck said nothing, but quietly he issued all requisite orders; while Stubb and Flask—who in some small degree seemed then to be sharing his feelings—likewise unmurmuringly acquiesced.”

Was will die EU wirklich? CannCon and Ghost open Tuesday's geopolitics-heavy show with Ghost leading the charge. John Brennan goes on MSNBC and openly tells embedded bureaucrats to hold the line, and James Comey follows with the same message minutes later, giving CannCon two dog whistles in one segment to unpack. Netanyahu tells 60 Minutes he wants to zero out the $3.8 billion in annual US military aid within a decade, and CannCon catches that he skipped the 2020 Trump meeting entirely in his timeline of conversations about Iran. Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Smotrich says the war must end with Israel changing its borders to include Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank. Ghost breaks down the Knesset dissolution threat and why Netanyahu's only card left is reigniting the Iran war. The UAE is secretly attacking Iran while simultaneously begging Trump for a currency swap, as its banks hemorrhage hundreds of billions. Venezuela's oil is back at 2018 levels, global reserves are draining at a record pace from the Strait of Hormuz blockade, and Alaskan oil leases hit $163 million at auction. Ghost connects Trump's tariff history from McKinley through 1912 to today. Finnish president Stubb is profiled as a Western-groomed globalist, and a French presidential candidate calls for France to leave NATO.
Geopolitieke omwentelingen laten allerlei nieuwe allianties ontstaan. Stubb noemt dit idee ‘a marriage made in heaven’. Hun Rudolf Thorbecke was diens tijdgenoot Lord Durham. Warm bepleiter daarvan was nota bene queen Victoria. A jednak. Alexander Stubb właśnie to robi. Słówka: So I grew up very much in a bilingual family. I tried my bearings in golf. I tried to find my bearings in golf. I've had three careers because the sports stuff didn't pan out. The sports stuff didn't pan out. So the starting point is different. The pressure is constant. It doesn't hold up. It's not sustainable. My off ramp was the European Investment Bank. The jury is out. It's still unclear. The outcome remains uncertain. Has been spotless. Pitch perfect. This is going too far. This crosses the line. This is unacceptable. We should have woken up. Smelt the coffee. We should have faced reality. We should have recognized the warning signs. The bottom line is that… The key takeaway is… Ultimately… First there is a crisis, then there's chaos, and finally there's a suboptimal solution. Suboptimal solution. Less-than-ideal solution. Compromise solution. So it's a complicated mix. A complex interplay of factors. A multifaceted issue. How do we get there? We get there by starting the conversation. It starts with dialogue. We get there through open discussion. Go the full mile. Go all the way. Escalate fully. Outsized influence. Disproportionate influence. Punch above its weight. SEASON 4 EPISODE 71: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump is paying Iran to try to kill Americans. $14 billion, he’s giving them. Fourteen billion for oil Iran can now sell, per Trump. What’s that called again? If you’re ‘adhering to our enemies, giving them aid and comfort’? And that fop Scott Bessent defended it yesterday as "jujitsuing" Iran, using its money against it. In fact Trump is using Iran's money against American troops. Trump, who is garbage - who celebrated the death of Robert Mueller just as he celebrated the death of Rob Reiner - who Friday said the Strait of Hormuz would open itself and then Saturday said he would destroy Iran’s power grid unless Iran opened it - who then compared the majority political party of this nation TO Iran - who announced he is sending his ICE terrorists into the airports because ANYBODY can be a TSA agent and apparently he forgot about his mass deportation thing – and who has had some sort of hallucinatory dream in which he decided this was quote “the death of Iran” when Iran is not only winning but most Americans recognize that Iran is winning... Trump has freed up $14,000,000,000 of Iranian oil because that will lower the price of a barrel of oil by like a dollar for like a week. Oh and remember when he made that joke to the Prime Minister of Japan about Pearl Harbor? Turns out President S-Stain didn’t know what HAPPENED… AT… Pearl Harbor. BY THE WAY the Iranians say if Trump does attack their energy infrastructure, that'll black out much of the Gulf, and they'll hit Israel's energy infrastructure, and all the neighboring nations' desalination plants. Good plan, Grampa Garbage. B-Block (36:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Twitter-X user Chris950003 has invented a new "eggcorn." Is Peter Navarro sticking to his prediction that Trump's war would lower energy prices? And the sabotage of CBS is nearly complete: Bari Weiss and the Ellisons have not only destroyed the birthplace of American broadcast journalism (Edward R. Murrow's CBS Radio) but she actually wants to have Stephen A. Smith host the CBS morning show. C-Block (50:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I am an alum of CBS Radio - at KNX in Los Angeles and for the radio network as a sportscaster and reporter in the '80s - and I bleed for its murder. But my connection is even more personal. The head of its all-news operation in New York personally validated, personally made tangible, my career aspirations. With one note he turned my possibility into a reality. The story of the Lou Adler Letter. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Day 1,488.Today, after another weekend of so-called peace talks over Russia's war in Ukraine, we search for signs of a diplomatic breakthrough (spoiler: there isn't one). We report on a fresh wave of long-range Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia that forced at least 15 Russian airports to suspend flight operations and also examine the so-called “Gamechanger” plot – allegations of a plan to stage a fake assassination attempt on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to boost his chances in next month's election. Later, we catch-up with Michael Bohnert at the RAND Corporation, and ask whether Ukraine's Flamingo cruise missiles and interceptor drones are now setting the pace for aerial warfare and military innovation.Contributors:Francis Dearnley (Host on Ukraine: The Latest). @FrancisDearnley on X.Dominic Nicholls (Host on Ukraine: The Latest). @DomNicholls on X.With thanks to Michael Bohnert of RAND.NOW IN FULL VIDEO WITH MAPS & BATTLEFIELD FOOTAGE:Every episode is now available on our YouTube channel shortly after the release of the audio version. “The changing date was the war in Ukraine in February 2022, and then probably the new American administration. So we don't know where the world is going to land. We live a little bit in a world of disorder right now.”Matt Chorley speaks to Alexander Stubb, President of Finland about shifting global priorities and allegiances.President Stubb is known for his good relationship with his American counterpart Donald Trump, forged in part over their shared love of golf. Suomen valtiojohto on viestinyt kieli keskellä suuta Yhdysvaltain aloittamista sotatoimista Iranissa. Tasavallan presidentti Alexander Stubb on varonut ottamasta suoraan kantaa Yhdysvaltain pommituksiin. Sen sijaan Iranin iskut Stubb on tuominnut oikeudettomina. Miten Iranin sodasta puhutaan Suomen valtiojohdon ja suomalaisten poliitikkojen toimesta? Miksi kansainvälisen oikeuden polkeminen on valtiojohdolle niin hankala asia? Miksi Stubb viestii Trumpista kieli keskellä suuta? Mikä on päivänpolitiikan sana? Suomen kielen dosentti Vesa Heikkinen ja Politiikkaradion toimittaja Tapio Pajunen analysoivat politiikan kielen ajankohtaisuuksia ja valitsevat päivänpolitiikan sanan. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney may have made headlines when he described a “rupture” in global order in a speech at Davos last month. But long before that, policymakers and analysts had already been grappling with this unsettled—and unsettling—era in global politics. And the challenge has of course been especially great for American allies facing a very different Washington. President Alexander Stubb of Finland has become central both to navigating and to understanding this time of rupture. He has emerged as a leader who is particularly adept at managing the rift in the U.S.-European relationship, and at talking to Donald Trump, whether about Greenland or about golf. Yet even as he's scrambled seemingly every week to avert a transatlantic crisis, Stubb has also gone out of his way to stress the long-term stakes of this moment—as he did in a recent Foreign Affairs essay. He warns that without significant changes, “the multilateral system as it exists will crumble,” and that “the alternatives are much worse: spheres of influence, chaos, and disorder.” Dan Kurtz-Phelan spoke to Stubb on Tuesday, February 3 about geopolitical challenges from China and Russia to Ukraine and, of course, Greenland; about Trump and the future of alliances; and about what a true breakdown in global order would mean in the years ahead. Recorded live at Stubb's in Austin, Texas Take host Jeremy Wallace sits down with Beto O'Rourke for a conversation about why he chose not to run for office this cycle and what he's doing instead. O'Rourke talks about his work with Powered by People, efforts to register and turn out new voters across Texas, and why down-ballot races matter as much as marquee contests. The discussion also touches on Democratic primary dynamics where O'Rourke weighs in on the race between Jasmine Crockett and James Talarico, voter suppression, the stakes of the 2026 midterms, and the unexpected parallels between grassroots politics and punk rock, drawing on O'Rourke's time as a musician. Suomen tavoite tänä vuonna on rauha, linjasi tasavallan presidentti Alexander Stubb uudenvuodenpuheessaan. Stubbin puhuessa rauhasta vaatii Yhdysvaltain presidentti Donald Trump Grönlantia itselleen. Ovatko Stubbin ajatukset rauhasta eri maailmasta kuin mistä uutiset kertovat? Miksi Trump-kuiskaajana tunnettu Stubb verhoaa Trump-kritiikkinsä epäsuoraksi vihjailuksi? Uskaltaako Stubb mainita arveluttavaa presidenttiä nimeltä? Mistä löytyvät Stubbin Suomen todelliset ystävät? Mikä on päivänpolitiikan sana? Trumpowskie “cards”. Niemieckie “Zeitenwende”, “resilience” oraz “industrial backbone”. Dlaczego politycy coraz częściej mówią jak CEO, a “corporate speak” wchodzi na salony dyplomacji? Dlaczego krótkie “soundbites“ żyją w obiegu dłużej niż całe przemówienia? I jak te polityczne frazy możemy świadomie wykorzystywać w Business English? Etupiiripolitiikka on palannut määrittämään kansainvälisiä suhteita. Jaakko Iloniemen mielestä Suomen asema on suhteellisen vakaa. Tasavallan presidentti Alexander Stubbin aktiivinen rooli suhteessa Yhdysvaltain presidenttiin Donald Trumpiin on Iloniemen mielestä merkittävä asia. Stubb ei pyytele anteeksi Suomen pienuutta, muttei myöskään rehvastele maan olemattomalla suuruudella. Ohjelman on toimittanut Sampo Vaarakallio. Äänitarkkailija on Katri Koivula. This week, Finnish President Alexander Stubb found himself at the seat of world leaders at the White House, discussing the best route to peace in Ukraine. How? He mastered the art of befriending Trump. Tamara Cohen chats to former political adviser in the Finnish government, Joel Linnainmäki, and former diplomat at the Danish embassy in Washington during Trump's first term, Jonas Parello-Plesner, about Stubb's trajectory in the lead up to this huge political moment. Tasavallan presidentti Alexander Stubb avaa uudessa kirjassaan ulkopoliittista ajatteluaan ja persoonaansa. Näistä jälkimmäisen sanotaan siivittäneen Stubbin diplomaattisesta menestyksestä toiseen – Trumpin golfkaveriksi ja kuiskaajaksi – keskelle tärkeimpiä neuvottelupöytiä. Kuinka korkealle ikuiseksi optimistiksi itseään luonnehtiva Stubb presidenttinä yltää? Kilvoitteleeko Stubb kaverinsa Trumpin kanssa jopa Nobelin rauhanpalkinnosta? Mitä tarkoittaa vallan kolmio ja arvokkaan ulkopolitiikan linja, joista Stubb kirjassaan kirjoittaa? Miksi lännen mahdollinen heikkous on Stubbin mukaan hänen ystävänsä Trump? Today, Les, Bishop, Marc, and Jess break down Monday's White House meeting between President Trump, President Zelensky, and a lineup of European leaders—including Starmer, Macron, Stubb, Meloni, Mertz, von der Leyen, and Rutte. Coming just days after Trump's Alaska summit with Putin, the gathering underscored both the importance of allied unity and the uncertainty of Trump's approach. Unlike past tense encounters, Trump and Zelensky struck a more cordial tone, though the meeting produced few concrete outcomes. Was this “boring” but expected sit-down a sign of stability—or simply a pause before the next shock? Can Europe truly step up and lead in its own backyard, or will Ukraine once again be left holding the line alone? And as talk of U.S. air support, tougher sanctions, and security guarantees surfaces, is Trump's instinct-driven diplomacy putting more pressure on Putin than it seems—or setting up another disappointment?@NotTVJessJones@LesterMunson@BishopGarrison@WashingtonFlackLike what we're doing here? Suoraa puhetta johtaa Maria Pettersson. Kaarina haluaa kuulla raatilaisten mielipiteet presidentti Stubbin roolista neuvotteluissa. Juha Itkonen on lukenut tarkalla silmällä Helsingin Sanomien tuoreen mielipidemittauksen puolueiden kannatuksesta. Kuitenkin keskusta on osoittautunut hyvin sitkeäksi. Marinin hallituksen loppuvaiheissa, joulukuussa -22, keskustaa kannatti Ylen gallupissa alle 9 prosenttia suomalaisista.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 5: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: THE DISASTA IN ALASKA The Disasta in Alaska - starring the cheeseburger-eating surrender monkey. We have, to quote Churchill, suffered a defeat, without a war. Because we forget we don’t MERELY have an evil, deranged president, we have an evil, deranged president who is also a moron. Now, Trump - Putin’s butt boy, his errand carrier - will deliver Putin’s message to Zelensky in Washington. He will be accompanied by EU President von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Rutte, Presidents Macron of France and Stubb of Finland, Prime Ministers Starmer of the U-K and Meloni of Italy, and Chancellor Merz of Germany. Trump will be accompanied by a large selection of mirrors. I suspect Trump will parrot what he remembers of Putin's message (whatever Trump's staff didn't leave on the printer of the business center at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage) and tell Zelensky that the way to achieve an end to the war in Ukraine is: to lose. The best thing Zelensky and the Europeans could say in response would be to state that they are withdrawing their recognition of the government of the United States of America because it is just too effing stupid. From the Disasta in Alaska to the Occupied territory of Washington, D.C. And don’t forget what Trump today DOUBLING the number of National Guard in DC with new recruits from Ohio, West Virginia, and South Carolina (all of them, far more violent than DC) means: It means he’s read his cratering polls number and declared war on the United States of America. Also: we rejoin the Trumpstein Cover-up Scandal, already in progress. B-Block (30:02) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: International Fop Piers Morgan FINALLY does a journalism - posts a meme of Trump on his way to meet Putin and Trump is wearing kneepads - and then DELETES the first journalism of his life? Pam Bondi proudly admits The Deep State has defeated her fascist DOJ with nothing more than a Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki Sub. And the battle of the most overrated people in their field: neither CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin nor House Democratic mis-Leader Hakeem Jeffries repeat Andrew Cuomo's canard that Democratic NYC mayor nominee Zohran Mamdani lives in a rent-CONTROLLED apartment when he, like HALF of all NYC renters (myself included) lives in a rent-STABILIZED apartment. Sorkin repeats this FOUR times, Jeffries doesn't correct him, and Jeffries who is theoretically a congressman from New York STILL refuses to endorse his own party's nominee, chosen by its MEMBERS, for mayor OF New York. Sorkin should be fired and Jeffries should resign. C-Block (43:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Somebody wrote last week that Aaron Sorkin's HBO "Newsroom" version of some of what happened to Countdown on MSNBC was the worst fictionalization of journalism in the English language. I think that's an exaggeration. It wasn't nearly that good.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jonathan GrossmanTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Jonathan Grossman. Known in some circles as Johnny Keys; Jon is the keyboard player for the rock band Uncle Lucius. Jon is from Kentucky, and how he became part of this kickass south Texas band is a good story, I get him to tell it to me in this episode. We discuss his growing up in Lexington, and what he was doing after school before the universe aligned and Uncle Lucius rolled into his town. We also chat about other bands that have keyboard players in them, and even some fake movie bands that do. Uncle Lucius took a bit of a break a few years ago, and then through a series of magical events, they were almost forced back together. The television show Yellowstone happened to feature an Uncle Lucius song in the fourth episode of the first season. The song caught fire all over again and made the band look into getting back together to see what they had left in the tank. As it turns out, they had quite a lot. Since then, they have released 3 more albums and just recorded yet another one a few weeks ago live at Gruene Hall. I ask Jon about the royalty implications of having a song blow up on a TV show like that, and he give HUGE props to Austin attorney Gwendolyn Seale! One of their more recent albums is called 'Like It's The Last One Left' and features one of my favorite Uncle Lucius songs (All the Angelenos). Jon is gracious enough to let me play that song, and their massive hit (from Yellowstone) called Keep the Wolve Away. Naturally we talk about the live show at Gruene Hall, why they haven't headlined at world famous Stubb's in Austin, and Uncle Lucius' insane touring schedule. We end the show talking about some of Jon's other work. He releases music under the name 'Sleepy Jon', as well as performing live at Sam's Town Point (south of Austin) EVERY Wednesday that Uncle Lucius is in town. Three members of Uncle Lucius are in this weekly performing band with some of Arlo Guthrie's daughters. The band is called The Guthrie Girls. Suoraa puhetta johtaa Maria Pettersson. Kertokaa millaisia ideoita teillä on uudelle ääriliikkeen edustajalle? Kenen patsaita poistetaan ja kenelle niitä pystytetään?
It's a new year and the abacus has been reset. The boys are in the Temple this week as the calendar turns to 2025. There's so much to look forward to this year, but first, we must figure out why Fort Worth keeps getting these black eyes. Kate Adie presents stories from Israel and Gaza, Guyana, Finland and the USA.International media have been campaigning to gain access to Gaza in the months since the Israeli bombardment began - with only occasional access granted, which is closely supervised by the Israeli military. More often, news organisations have relied on Palestinian journalists already living and working in Gaza, who continue to operate under dangerous conditions. Jeremy Bowen reflects on the difficulties of telling the story of the Israel-Gaza war. After Guyana discovered it had substantial oil reserves almost ten years ago, its economy was quickly transformed and it's now the world's fastest growing economy. But its neighbour, Venezuela, recently contested Guyana's claim to oil-rich Essequibo region, which makes up two-thirds of Guyana's territory, reviving a centuries-old territorial dispute. Michelle Jana Chan went to see how the country had changed.Alexander Stubb was elected as Finland's president in polls last weekend, heralding a more hawkish approach to Russia. Finland acceded to NATO last year, and has a strategic role to play given its long border with its giant neighbour. Emilia Jansson reflects on what sort of President, Mr Stubb will be - and on what the presidential campaign revealed about Finnish attitudes. And in the US, the decor of the Oval Office in the White House is always closely watched when there's a change of President. Donald Trump's military flags were replaced with busts of influential figures from America's past, ranging from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Rosa Parks. Nick Bryant reports on what the contents of the President's bookshelf might reveal.Series Producer: Serena Tarling Editor: Richard Fenton-Smith Production coordinator: Katie Morrison
