What makes a bass line cut through in a heavy band like Pantera? In this episode, Ian Allison sits down with Rex Brown to find out. Rex walks us through a few of his most iconic lines—including the growling groove of “I'm Broken” and shares what it took to hold down the low end in one of metal's loudest, heaviest bands. If you're into classic hard rock riffs, thunderous tone, or just want to hear a legend talk shop, this one hits hard.

On this episode of CHRIS AKIN PRESENTS..., Chris dives deep with Scour bassist Derek Engemann about their explosive new release GOLD, the band's evolution into a mature extreme metal force, and whether fans still expect tracks from their other projects. Oh, and let's not forget Derek's epic stint filling in for Rex Brown at a recent Pantera show!
Hello friends! Musician, producer, engineer, bass tech, and now content creator Bobby Landgraf is my guest for episode 1440! While on tour with Pantera as Rex Brown's bass tech, Bobby started filming the experience of touring the world for himself and the crew on his phone. He started putting the videos up on YouTube as "Crew From Hell 2.0" and people started watching. Myself included. I love the show and have watched every episode. Watch "Crew From Hell 2.0" HERE. Bobby and I have a great conversation about what it takes to make "Crew From Hell 2.0", his experiences making the show and what he's learned, getting the support of Pantera, playing with Dino Lee, Honky, Gahdzilla Motor Company, Corrosion Of Conformity and more, the crazy story about getting started teching for Ian Moore, his plans for the show, and much more. I had a blast catching up with my dear friend. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. If you feel so inclined. Barcelonassa, Espanjassa, kaupungin puistossa järjestetään hieno festivaali. Sami Ruokangas tarkastelee tämän vuoden ohjelmaa ja kertoo aiempia kokemuksiaan Espanjasta.
Anders Fridén is back on the show! We're celebrating their upcoming North American tour with Gatecreeper and Creeping Death, so naturally we discuss Fridén's involvement in selecting the opening acts for the tour, how playing live means so much more after the pandemic, the importance of a scene for heavy music to rise, and how In Flames rehearses with members living in different countries. We also discuss the importance of artwork for heavy metal, what he considers the 30th anniversary of In Flames, and if they have anything planned for that milestone. Petar and Brandon discuss Rex Brown's comments on possibly recording new Pantera music, Charlie Benante on the possibility of a new Pantera live album, and Maynard James Keenan assisting Mike Tyson during a strange time in boxing. Watch Charlie's Drum Rundown: https://youtu.be/Gz-suX8VSqMFull Rig Details: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/panteraOriginal Cowboy from Hell bassist Rex Brown has gone through so much gear. He's lost amps and donated basses to charity. He's fostered many fruitful friendships with companies that's resulted signature wares for war. His latest partnership has him riding high on a pair of namesake Thunderbirds dressed in black and gold. He still tours with old Spectors who feel like home (if home was a thunderstorm). He's got a proper pedalboard and rack gear that's been routed through a RJM switcher (first time ever). And he and tech Bobby Landgraf (also guitar player in Honky and Down for Down IV – Part II) detail the whole chain of tonal command. Then we have a blast chatting with Zakk Wylde who covers his toolbox of Warhammers and Master 100 heads. He ponders what it must've been like to have been Eddie Van Halen or Randy Rhoads who toured with their iconic instruments and not having any backups! “Awww mannn…” As of the recording of this episode, we were hyping ourselves into a frenzy to get fired up and ready for the upcoming PANTERA show (with King Parrot and Lamb of God opening) at the Ameris Amphitheater in Alpharetta, Georgia on September 12th, 2023. And as of the publishing of this episode, we will have already borne witness to the awesome display of power which made PANTERA the quintessential metal band of the 90's (more on that later…), and for that, we give “bigly tremendous” thanks and our utmost respect to both Charlie Benante and Zakk Wylde for joining Phil Anselmo & Rex Brown in the global crusade of preserving the memory, sharing the music, and highlighting the timeless legacy of The Brothers Abbott, as well as showing the younger generations of metalheads why PANTERA was, is, and always will be so incredibly special to the world of heavy music. (Again, more on that later…) Get your “fish chicken” ready because it's time to get “boned up about the wings” and prepare to understand why “mosquitos” are evil and “eminent domain” should be outlawed. Discover “the best Metallica album that Metallica didn't release”, get your “PhD in balls” and JOIN US as we fire up the barbie, enjoy some relaxers, and wax nostalgic while preparing to behold the metal legacy of the band that dominated metal in the 90's with the biggest djunts this side of the Rio Grande as Metal Nerdery Podcast proudly presents the PANTERA PRE-GAME. This is an exclusive interview with Richie Faulkner, guitarist with Judas Priest, and his new project, Elegant Weapons. Join us as we explore the making of his highly anticipated debut album, "Horns for a Halo."
What an honor to have Richie Faulkner on Talkin' Rock. This is the first time I've had a chance to talk to the metal guitarist. His new project is called Elegant Weapons and their debut album drops on May 26th. The band features him, Ronnie Romero on vocals, Rex Brown (Pantera) on bass, and Scott Travis (Judas Priest) on drums. The band also features different players including Christopher Williams on drums and Dave Rimmer on bass. He told me about putting the band together, why the timing was right, and getting each player. As far as getting Rex, Scott and Ronnie on the album, Richie said "I'm super fortunate to have these guys on the record." He told me about asking these legends to record with him. Speaking of Rex Brown, I asked Richie if he ever talked about joining Pantera. "To me there was only one guy who could do that, that's Zakk." He told me about never seeing the Cowboys From Hell live. That brought on an unbelievable Ouija board story. LOL He talked about the writing process in both Elegant Weapons and Judas Priest. "Rob has to connect with it" in respect to the lyrics. He gives an update on new Priest "As far as recoding it's almost done. I can't wait for you guys to hear it." Now, working on his third album with the band, he tells me about his comfort level in the band. He also talks about Andy Sneap and his ability to pull the best out of the guys. We talk about the Flying V guitar he uses. He gives me a health update after his emergency heart surgery a couple years ago. "The guitar, and touring and these records have gotten me through." "The Reaper was on stage that night." I'm glad Richie won that battle. He also fills us in on how Glenn Tipton is doing. He also told the me song that not only turned him into a music fan, but made him fall in love with guitar....and more! -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/
Dem Vinyl Boyz are listening to some 90s rock in the form of "Vulgar Display of Power" by the band Pantera which had a multitude of hits through out the 90s. Pantera was a heavy metal band formed in Arlington, Texas in 1981. The band was composed of vocalist Phil Anselmo, guitarist Dimebag Darrell, drummer Vinnie Paul, and bassist Rex Brown. Over the course of their career, Pantera released several successful albums and established themselves as one of the most influential bands in the heavy metal genre. However, it was their 1992 album, "Vulgar Display of Power," that solidified their place in the heavy metal pantheon. The album is considered by many to be their magnum opus, showcasing the band's raw power, aggression, and technical prowess. It features classic tracks such as "Walk," "Mouth for War," and "This Love," all of which have become staples of heavy metal radio. "Vulgar Display of Power" marked a shift in Pantera's sound, moving away from their earlier glam metal influences and toward a heavier, more aggressive sound. The album's guitar riffs are some of the most memorable in heavy metal history, and Dimebag Darrell's virtuosic solos continue to inspire aspiring guitarists to this day. Unfortunately, Pantera's success was not without tragedy. In 2004, during a performance with his new band Damageplan, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed by a fan who rushed the stage. The incident shocked the heavy metal community, and Darrell's death was felt deeply by his bandmates and fans around the world. Despite this tragedy, the legacy of Pantera and "Vulgar Display of Power" endures. The album remains a touchstone for heavy metal fans and musicians alike, and continues to influence new generations of heavy metal artists. The band's music continues to be celebrated for its raw power, intensity, and technical proficiency, and Dimebag Darrell's virtuosity on the guitar continues to be remembered as one of the greatest in heavy metal history. In conclusion, Pantera and "Vulgar Display of Power" remain a legendary presence in heavy metal music. Their influence on the genre cannot be overstated, and their legacy continues to inspire fans and musicians alike. While the tragic death of Dimebag Darrell was a devastating loss, his music and legacy continue to live on. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We are covering an all timer here on the pod. 1994's AIRHEADS. I am not sure there is a better comedy movie in history that I feel was made for people in bands. If you were or currently are I feel like this is a next generations spinal tap. Never has a bass player been the coolest in the band since well Lemmy or Rex (Brown from Pantera). The lines, the insults, the band humor and dynamic are all prodcuts of the time but somehow ageless still. The cast for this one is legendary. Unrivaled some might say. I have been beating a fucking drum for a sequel to this film and have wrote screenplays in my head since I was a little shit heel lad in the 90s. So Adam Sandler this is a call to you, get happy madison in charge of whatever IP needs to be aquired if any to make this sequel happen Fraser hotter than a case of scorching herpes again. No excuses. Regan youth cover, white zombie, Anthrax coverin the smiths, Born to Raise hell in the opening credits. HOW CAN YOU SAY NO TO THAT?! If its too loud, you're too old!

Even though it happened back in 2016, and Pantera singer Philip Anselmo subsequently apologized, European music festivals are having none of it. Pantera, featuring Anselmo and original bassist Rex Brown, is gearing up for a big spring-summer European tour starting in March, following their return to the live stage in South America last year. Joshua and Chris start the show with somber news of Bob Nalbandian passing and share some great stories of the legend. Mark Tremonti speaks on being approached by Rex Brown to throw his name in the hat for the Pantera gig. Richie Faulkner gives his thoughts on Zakk being the guy for the gig. Devin Townsend says Nickleback's Chad Kroeger is more metal than him. System Of A Down drummer, John Dolmayan, has some words for Serg and the rest of the band. Arch Enemy's Alissa White-Gluz discusses her relationship with Doyle and Chris fights back his tears.
The Pantera reunion tribute tour with original members, singer Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, launched this month in Mexico with Charlie Benante on drums in honor of his great friend, Vinnie Paul, and Zakk Wylde on guitar in tribute to the great Dimebag Darrell Abbott. Charlie Benante explains how this tour came together, who contacted him, and when and why he agreed to play. He discusses learning the songs and playing them in Vinnie's style, his favorite riffs and fills, and what he thinks about the fan reaction so far. Charlie gives a detailed look into his rehearsals with Pantera, forming the set list, bonding with Rex, Pantera's musical legacy, the Van Halen influence, and how his longtime bandmates in Anthrax reacted when he told them what he was doing. Charlie also shares some great memories and stories about Dime and Vinnie, including how he originally met them both, gigs that Pantera and Anthrax played together, and Eddie Van Halen's emotional and touching tribute at Dime's funeral. Let's get ourselves right back into the mix and mess up the mix and mix up the mess. Back in the early 80's, there was a band called Pantera and it featured the Abbot Brothers, Rex Brown, but not Phil Anselmo. It's well known to the metal community that this lineup of the band did get into the studio and release four albums, they refuse to re-release those indie albums they did. So, in true Department of Metal Antiquities fashion, Duncan and Nik get all up in the business of Metal Magic. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Pantera surviving members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown recently announced they are reuniting the band with Zakk Wylde (of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society) on guitar and Charlie Benante (of Anthrax) on drums, and Pantera fans have mixed opinions about it. In this episode of the MalcoCast we discuss! Don't forget to subscribe to the channel!
David Ellefson reflects on the ups and downs of his four decade music career. Stryper's Michael Sweet says Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown have the right to tour as Pantera. Olivia Newton-John passes away at 73, after a long battle with cancer. And Kain Tyler joins us to talk video game history, and our Top 5 Favorite games of all time. Bands reuniting can lead to varied results - especially when bands reunite without key members. But is it hypocritical to be skeptical of some reunions while fully accepting of others when the band's circumstances may be identical? What makes some reunions successful and others a complete bust? That's what Matt and Zach discuss in the latest episode of “Am I Missing Something?,” a podcast where we analyze popular or unpopular bands, albums, songs or music trends in an attempt to figure out what we seem to be “missing.” The goal isn't to ridicule, but rather to gain a better understanding of what a majority of fans see or don't see in something that Matt and Zach simply can't wrap their heads around. Note: when Matt and Zach recorded this episode, an official announcement about Pantera's pending “reunion” (speculated to involve Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown playing live with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante filling in for the deceased Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, respectfully) had yet to be made. This week we're joined by fellow podcasters Joshua Toomey and Chris Akin as we go over The Best & Worst of Pantera! With the Texas metal legends making news recently with the reunion of Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown along with drummer Charlie Benante and guitarist Zakk Wylde, we figured it's as good a time as any to look back on this incredible band's musical catalog.Starting with 1990's 'Cowboys from Hell,' Pantera blazed a whole new path for thrash and metal music. The Abbott brothers; Vinny Paul and Dimebag Darrell, cemented their place in music history and begun a run with Anselmo and Brown that hasn't been equalled. The subsequent releases 'Vuglar Display of Power,' 'Far Beyond Driven,' 'The Great Southern Trendkill,' and 'Reinventing the Steel' helped the band lay claim as one of the most influential metal bands of all-time.In this long-form discussion, we all share our thoughts on these albums, tell stories of how they personally affected us, and a lot more while picking our favorite and least favorite from each album. This was no easy task but we think you'll enjoy it. We also discuss the 101 Proof Live album as well as some of the b-sides and rarities that Pantera churned out over the years. We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of Pantera and SHARE with a friend!
