Bradley Zero simply has that rare fusion of global success and grassroots authenticity. From humble beginnings as a teenage bar back in Leeds to becoming the founder of Rhythm Section International, what makes Bradley's approach so refreshing is his unwavering commitment to community. During our conversation, he reveals how finding his tribe in Peckham transformed his understanding of creative collaboration. "I was part of something," he reflects. "It wasn't networking... it was people somehow congregating around a small geographical area with an insane amount of creative energy." This foundation informs everything he touches – from his NTS radio show to Jumbi, his one-turntable hi-fi bar that draws inspiration from Jamaican sound systems and David Mancuso's legendary loft parties. The pandemic proved pivotal for Bradley, creating space for reflection on his role within the industry, leading him to launching Future Proof – a mentorship initiative aimed at demystifying the often secretive workings of the music industry. His observations about discovering the lack of diversity at upper industry levels led to this mission of opening doors and creating change "one step at a time."If you've ever danced to one of his sets or tuned in to his NTS show, you'll know that Bradley's musical philosophy defies easy categorization, embracing everything from jazz and broken beat to minimal techno and 90s piano house. Add to this rock solid DIY ethics, where "balancing micro and macro," help him keep check in on where he‘s at, helping him in nurturing local scenes while thinking globally.Whether discussing the challenges of festival versus club DJing or offering wisdom to his younger self about enjoying the journey, I loved having this chat.Follow Bradley Zero on Instagram  @bradley_zeroExplore Future Proof, his emerging‑artist mentorship programme at Rhythm Section: Future Proof If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. In this episode, Tim and Jeremy complete our mini-series on Saturday Night Fever by looking at the film in its cinematographic context alongside two other huge movies of the late1970s. With reference to Rocky and Taxi Driver, the guys unearth the shared visions of class and race politics in the USA of the period. They discuss the particular place of Italian Americans in the culture more broadly, discuss particular forms of American-ness, and spend some time on the real life events that inspired the character of Rocky Balboa. After that, attention returns to Travlota to wrap up SNF with a look at how the film was received at the time and since, and reflect on how their own attitudes to the movie have changed down the years. Plus the Trammps, Jem's Grandma, and the answer to the question of whether David Mancuso ever saw Tony Manero up on the big screen…Produced by Matt Huxley. We are now on Youtube! For Episode 59 of STARK REALITY, Host James Dier aka $mall ¢hange welcomes veteran New York City DJ, radio producer and party promoter REGGIE JOHNSON. Reggie Johnson is an audio engineer, radio show host, party promoter and all around good ppls. He's been working as an engineer behind the boards at WBAI Pacifica for a few decades, and co-hosting Jeanie Hopper's Liquid Sound Lounge since '98. His own radio show From the Soundboard has been running since 2007, a 'program that usually focuses on concerts regardless of genre. This is where the artist and (or) group perfects the art of the "call and response" with its audience.' He does great deep dives on all kinds of artists and groups like Gal Costa, Link Wray, Yusef Lateef, Paul Robeson, Ramsey Lewis and many others. He's also helped promote parties since 1998 and has a longtime summer thing called Beats & BBQ. In his own words, he's 'just an average individual who believes in Socialist principles through music, arts and action. Everything is connected to everything.' Reggie is a humble and real dude which isn't always the case in these music and party scenes haha. We start out talking about classic parties and DJs like the Loft, David Mancuso, Paradise Garage, Nicky Siano, Turntables on the Hudson, and Liquid Sound Lounge, where Reggie got his start promoting and getting involved with WBAI and doing his own show. We also get into a lot about politics, Palestine, Ukraine, our disappointment with Bernie, critical thinking, and his own journey coming out of his shell as an introvert into promoting and throwing parties. We ended up rapping for over two hours so a longer convo. Enjoy! Reggie also gives us a tasty mix of vintage African funk to accompany. In this patrons-only bonus episode, Tim draws on some recent research into David Mancuso's record collection to share some tracks that might have been played during what he called ‘the prelude' -  the introductory portion of the night's musical entertainment. Taking into account the different settings at both the Broadway and Prince Street Lofts, and David's never-ending adjustments of the sound system, Tim explains what the prelude represented for the party, why hi-fi audio was crucial, and how the prelude changed across the 70s. Drawing on the three bardos understanding of the acid trip, we explore why this gentle introduction to a night of dancing was an important innovation and select a range of pieces of music that we can speculate would have been played. Tim and Jeremy detail the shutdown of the first Loft space, how David found the new location, and the battle he had with the art scene residents of Soho to stay there. The Prince Street Loft was a much larger space, set over two floors, so we hear about the different configuration of the sound system, and how across all Loft settings a collection of principles helped guide and maintain the setup. Jeremy and Tim talk more broadly about audiophile aesthetics, the introduction of 'the prelude' to David's musical journey, and the slippery concept of 'jazziness'. In this episode Jeremy and Tim are checking in to Nicky Siano's downtown spot The Gallery, a legendary party space often uttered in the same breath as the Loft, the Paradise Garage and the Warehouse. Nicky was a highly influential and original DJ who had as much as influence on Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles as David Mancuso. We hear a history of the Gallery, setting it within the complex web of 70s Soho, including the temporary closure of the space and its triumphant reopening. The show covers how party spaces were regulated, the regulatory regimes of dancing more generally across time, and the tension that the requirement to promote oneself as a freelancer DJ put on the emergent ethos of the scene. Tim and Jeremy also talk about Studio 54, drugs, the role of lighting in a party setting, and the place of women - and especially women DJs - in downtown party culture. Finally, all this is contrasted repeatedly with what David Mancuso was doing simultaneously as his Loft night moved venues. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Tune in, Turn on, Get Down! As part of our celebration of 21 years of club culture, we're featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties and clubs most important to their lives in dance music. The Loft is one of the most storied and sacred spaces in dance music history. Founded in Manhattan in 1970 by the late David Mancuso, The Loft was a party unlike any other: relaxed and gently psychedelic, with pristine audiophile sound played at a medium volume level kinder to the ears. You didn't need to blast the music to appreciate the sonic perfection of the music and the system it was played on. Over the decades, Mancuso invented his own influential style of DJing, letting the records breathe rather than mashing them together. Mancuso, who died in 2016, had many acolytes over the years, perhaps none more prominent than Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, who provides our final 2122 birthday RA Podcast: a tribute to The Loft. Murphy has an impressive resume without The Loft: she's a long-time radio DJ, founded the Classic Album Sundays series and started her own Lucky Cloud Loft Party in London, in collaboration with Mancuso. Her DJing style, slow, steady and respectful of the music, channels those years spent at The Loft, and her RA Podcast embodies the disco-influenced sounds that define the party, played with care, love and reverence.

New York's dance music culture evolves every weekend. A constant wave of new collectives, promoters and artists, combined with a host of legacy names and an ever-growing batch of enthusiastic ravers, infuse the city with a vivacious energy that's hard to find elsewhere. This episode of Reflections, a series that digs deep into RA content, pays tribute to New York nightlife through three heartfelt anecdotes that capture the vibrancy of past and present communities. Taken from RA's new limited-edition book Sacred Spaces, each message focuses on special party moments. Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy describes her quest to seek spirituality and communal transcendence through music, focusing on her experiences at David Mancuso's seminal The Loft party. Sharon White, a veteran name in New York's clubbing history, recounts the night of her unexpected debut at The Saint, an East Village spot that operated during the 1980s. The impromptu set went until 2 PM in the afternoon, leading the way for White to become one of the top grossing DJs on The Saint's roster. Finally, RA's editor-in-chief Whitney Wei describes coming of age at Palisades, an intimate Bushwick venue that lasted only two years but considerably shaped her club experiences. Sacred Spaces, available for £29.99 via the RA Store, features 26 tributes to the dance by the likes of Kevin Saunderson, Róisín Murphy, Eris Drew and Octo Octa, among others.

Today, it's my birthday! For the occasion, I've decided to share a special interview with Tim Lawrence, one of the most profoundly passionate music historians of the New York Dance scene of the 70s and early 80s I have ever met. And what better day to honour the legacy of David Mancuso? Birthdays. David loved birthdays. In the children's home where he grew up, Sister Alicia used to hold birthday parties for all the kids under her care.I've spoken about this with Tim Lawrence and the other issues related to the music at The loft, David Mancuso and the History Of New York City party culture. Tim is a Professor of Cultural Studies and Co-director of the Centre for Cultural Studies Research. He teaches music and is the author of seminal books. One above all, "Love saves the day". A brilliant documentation of the dance and disco scene in New York during the 1970s with interviews from key players in the era, such as Frankie Knuckles, Francis Grasso, Nicky Siano, etc. In today's interview, Tim passionately shared the details and his own experiences. Honestly, it was more than an interview. I wish I could spend more time listening to Tim, shedding light on the contribution of music legends and what New York in the 70s was all about. I hope you will experience the same! ✨Enjoy listening

These developments are contextualised as part of an international wave of people in different areas of life seeking ways to self organise and democratise, from Italian Autonomia to American and British trade union militancy, and in the tradition of 'commoning'. In this patrons-only episode, Tim and Jeremy react to Louis Vuitton's latest menswear line "Fall in Love", designed by the late Virgil Abloh and, according to the LV publicity, inspired by David Mancuso and the Loft. Tim published a long article on this topic, linked below, in which he tears into the claim by Louis Vuitton, the largest and most profitable luxury corporation in the world, that it shares David's concern with egalitarianism. The show opens with Tim outlining his argument after which Jem and Tim dig deep into the problem of corporate appropriation, the luxury brand market, conspicuous wealth in music culture, the role of language in fashion reportage, Roland Barthes, private luxury and public squalor, how to deal with corporations, and some extended biographical recollections about David. As we finally come to the end of our series on Afro-Psychedlia, Tim and Jeremy bring us back to New York, David Mancuso and the dancefloor of The Loft via Puerto Rico, Salsa and the Latin influence on the city in the early '70s. We hear about the mighty Fania Records - a classic example of the sort of small labels who found a commercial audience while still releasing amazing music - and the band they fostered, the Fania All-Stars. We also spend time exploring the catalog of Ray Barretto, who's track Acid featured at the very beginning of the LITM project. Jeremy and Tim also interrogate the idea of New York as a 'melting pot', consider the construction of the Nu Yorican identity, and contrast it to the other cultural and musical formations of the late '60s we've heard about in this series. We're also introduced to Boogaloo, 'the Watusi', and close with Eddie Palmieri's fantastic, epic track 'Un Día Bonito' - a worthy place to end for now. We'll be taking a bit of a summer break and back with a new series in the Autumn - but keep an eye on the feed, we'll be throwing out some extra bits for patrons to tide you over. Colleen concurs that the latter's 'Saturday' (1978) is a stone disco classic. The New York theme continues with discussion of the week's new audio interview, featuring No Wave queen and fearless transgressor Lydia Lunch talking to Martin Aston in 1989. We hear a clip of Lydia holding forth on her staunch refusal to be part of any cultural mainstream — and conversation ensues about her huge influence and complicated relationship with radical feminism. Finally, Mark talks us through such new additions to the RBP library as a 1969 Jimi Hendrix interview from the L.A. Times, Nick Kent's 1978 encounter with Elvis Costello, and Sean O'Hagan's account of his 1998 trip to Belfast with U2. A second clip from the Lydia Lunch audio takes us out of the episode…Many thanks to special guest Colleen Murphy; like her Facebook page at Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy and visit classicalbumsundays.com.Pieces discussed: David Mancuso, The Art of Deejaying without Deejaying, DJ Cosmo, Norma Jean Wright, Elvis in Hollywood, 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong, Lydia Lunch audio, Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, Disco Demand, Elvis Costello, Was (Not Was), U2, Viv Stanshall, Primal Scream, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Them Crooked Vultures and Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Music does this and unites people in ways we would never think possible... Thanks again and enjoy the replay. I Love you all #ParadiseStateOfMind MmP xxx Please note this is my personal tribute to David who has sadly passed on the 14th Nov 2016

On episode one of the THUMP Podcast, News Editor Anna Codrea-Rado, Features Editor Michelle Lhooq, and Managing Editor Colin Joyce join host and Editor-in-Chief Emilie to reflect on the impact Trump's travel ban will have touring electronic musicians, as well as the responsibility that artists have to use their platform for politics. We also mull over the ways the Grammys fail electronic music and the lessons Michelle learned from spending a month going to clubs sober. Also discussed are our Valentine's Day faves: Prince, David Mancuso, and twitchy ambient music. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
