On 15 August 2008, nine-year-old Matt Berger tripped over a fossil that would lead to one of the most important discoveries in the history of human evolution. The young adventurer had been exploring the Cradle of Humankind, in South Africa, with his father Lee, a paleoanthropologist. "I didn't really know what was happening. I was just there for fun. But my dad was so excited. So obviously that made me excited too," said Matt. The fossil turned out to be from a new species of hominid called Australopithecus sediba. One Team, One Fight is the name of a beer brewed by veteran Matt Berger, but it also represents how veterans should join together to support one another post military transition as they did while on active duty. Matt served eight years in the U.S. Army (2006-2014) as a mechanic with one tour in Afghanistan (09-10) with the 82nd Airborne Division. He separated the Army and after a while ended up at Line Creek Brewing Co., where he began brewing beer. The brewery decided that they wanted to create a beer and support local veteran non-profits. They asked Matt to lead the effort to create a great tasting beer for this fundraiser. We discuss the impact that this creation had on Matt, his role in the process, and how what he does today helps him deal with the invisible wounds of combat.
