Local celebrity chef, author, mental health advocate, and television host Melissa d'Arabian joins us via Zoom for Mental Health Awareness Month.
I had such a great discussion with Melissa d'Arabian for this episode. Today we round out Suicide Prevention Month by talking about Melissa's reflections and perspective as someone who lost her mom to suicide when she was in college. Melissa has appeared many times on the Food Network, first as the season five winner of “The Next Food Network Star,” then as the host of her own show, “Ten Dollar Dinners,” and more recently on several of their other shows. I first remember watching her on “The Next Food Network Star” and rooting for her to win, as she was so relatable to those of us who are busy parents trying to feed their family day in and day out. It is because of her work as an advocate for suicide awareness that I invited her on this show this week. Of course, we do talk about feeding families a bit, too, as that is also something that widowed parents deal with every night of the week. Some topics Melissa and I discuss include: Some memories of her mom, including learning to love food and cooking from her; How the scaffolding of her entire life collapsed after her mom died; Wishing she had an adult to provide guidance, including on practical matters like paying for school; Learning to cherish female friendships in the years after her mom died; The difference between “Happiness” and “happiness;” The fact that people tend to talk about suicide in whispers, and how important it is to talk about it openly instead; Melissa's thoughts on the struggle often faced by busy parents to get dinner on the table every night; Some tips for simple, nutritious, mood-supporting foods that can easily be incorporated into our busy lives; and Her role advocation for suicide awareness with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I hope you enjoy my discussion with Melissa d'Arabian. -=-=-=-=- Thank you sponsors & partners: Audible - Get a FREE audiobook and 30-day free trial: www.audibletrial.com/widowedparent BetterHelp - Talk with a licensed, professional therapist online. "Being a mom of four girls has just been such an honor. I can't believe God let me do that." "My faith journey has changed. And it's had events or turning points which is much like my food journey." "The spiritual winter after my mom's death really came from my inability to reconcile her suicide." "But in her death, I really learned how to have joy without being happy." "And that gift, understanding that joy really is an inside job. And for me it's a job about me and God." "I love story, because it's universal." "It was something I wanted, I needed to learn and reconcile about food culture versus what God wanted be to feel and think about food." Being closer to God "My story with loss, yucky, good, bad, good decisions, bad decisions, things working out, some things not working out --- all of that has been my story. All of that has just sucked me right on up into being close to God." "So for that if it took that story to get me closer to God, then I love my story." Today's guest is truly a STAR...A Food Network Star! We are with the winner of Season 5, Melissa D'Arabian and whether you are a foodie or not--this is a conversation you don't want to miss! We talk about how she landed a spot on the reality show by creating the craziest food ever in her hot, Texas garage and how some hard experiences from her childhood set her on a mission to help those on a tight budget. Melissa is passionate about helping others realize eating well doesn't have to cost your whole paycheck and how being hospitable can be simple. She also shares a grocery store hack that will change the way you shop forever. In this episode we discuss: 1. The reason most of us downplay our gifts. 2. How to avoid the performance trap in hospitality. 3. What God says about food. (it's not what you think!) Favorite quotes: 1. The magic happens when we take on a servant mentality, that we're meant to show up and use our gifts to the best of our ability. 2. The news from God on food, in my experience, is one of unity and drawing us closer into Him. 3. My thinking and work about eating best is really about strategy. It's so much less about that one magic recipe. It's really about strategy in thinking strategically about my grocery bill. In this episode, I answer this question- 1. If God forgives me, why do I feel like He hasn't? (58:16) Links to great things we discussed: 1. Melissa d'Arabian 2. Tasting Grace 3. Frank Sinatra playlist 4. The Greatest Showman 5. Beetlejuice 6. Host Kristin Schell interviews chef and best-selling author Melissa d’Arabian. Melissa is an expert on affordable family cooking, and author of the book Tasting Grace. In this episode they discuss how Melissa’s career got started, her new book, and how her faith influences her approach to food. Melissa first realized her connection to food, growing up in a single family home where money was tight. While she often experienced hunger at school, she saw the sacrifices her mom made to welcome others into their home with hospitality. Melissa and Kristin discuss the problems with the way that our society approaches food. While we are as disconnected from the source of our food as we’ve ever been, we are also food obsessed; We have celebrity chefs, and we constantly post images of our food on the internet. There are some serious misconceptions about food in a world where we won’t eat a tomato because of the sugar content but we’ll drink an artificially colored and sweetened sports drink. To develop a better philosophy and theology of food, Melissa looked to the Bible where she couldn’t find any of the guilt language our society has about food. Instead, all the language around food was about loving, welcoming, and celebrating. It was observing these tensions in our food culture and this journey in the Bible that led Melissa to write Tasting Grace. Links/Resources:

Melissa d’Arabian is a winner of “The Next Food Network Star,” a celebrity chef, author, and mom of four. She’s is an expert on affordable and healthy family home cooking who has inspired people with her shows on Food Network. A few years ago, God inspired Melissa to do a deep dive into scripture and prayer to evaluate the meaning of food in her life. What she discovered is our relationship with food reflects our understanding of God and his creation. In her new book, Tasting Grace, she invites readers to appreciate food as not only a gift from God but also as a deeper invitation into his love. “Every meal we have can be an invitation into creativity, community, and patience. The fact that I could sit there and even for a moment and marvel and at least to honor everything that's gone into my food connected me more to God and it made me enjoy the food more.” We talk about how meals can bring us closer to God and how he created a food system to nourish us and delight our palates. Melissa is passionate about separating food and body image and saying no to the negative perspective often put on food. “I want my children when they are young women going out there in the world to have the joy of a great relationship with food. And so if I talk about myself in a way that is unkind, not only are my kids hearing it, but God is hearing it. Speaking in terms of body image and all of that, I think it must make God feel sad when I reject the body he has given me. ”

He gave us different types of food to enjoy because He loves us! Jesus didn't just feed people, He ate with them. Food is a way that enables relationship to happen and when we practice hospitality, we are inviting people to embrace community. This episode surprisingly convicted us because, well, we don't think much about food. But, good grief, what we miss out on when we see food as a way to shovel nutrients (or happiness) in as opposed to a way to know God more deeply. Food Network star, Melissa d'Arabian, invites us to the table with our creative, creator-of-food God. Through her vulnerable story and experience in the food entertainment industry, Melissa teaches us how to know Him more through eating. This is a sweet one. Highlights: "God could have created a nutrition-delivery system that was far less delicious and far more efficient that didn't require us to stop, sit, eat, prepare, and grow. But He didn't." --Melissa d'Arabian "Food has a way of saying, 'I see you.'" --Melissa d'Arabian Do the Next Thing: Check out Melissa's book Tasting Grace: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LDT8BMC/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 Check out her site (and food books/videos!) here: http://www.melissadarabian.net Question of the Week for Next Week: What is your favorite word?
