We are so happy to welcome Michelle Baxter to the Suite Run Podcast!Michelle Baxter—also known as The Runner's Plate on social media--is a sub-3 hour marathoner, mom of two boys, running coach, and a morning runner who runs without music but does like to listen to podcasts while on the treadmill. Michelle and her family currently reside in Anchorage, Alaska, but will be moving in just a couple of weeks to Minnesota, which is where Michelle grew up. Her and her husband are making a big switch in their careers and will be taking over the family farm of corn and soybeans. Michelle and her husband spent the last 15 years in Anchorage. She worked at the local running store (Skinny Raven Sports), coached with the Raven Run Club, and did a lot of Alaskan things over the years. It was not uncommon for Michelle to see a variety of wild animals on her morning runs: moose, coyote, lynx, eagles, sandhill cranes, along with other species. Michelle shares her inspiring running journey in the first half of the conversation and then we chat all things ALASKA, including Michelle's favorite places to run (bring the bear spray!), great places to dine out in Anchorage, fun races and so much more.Enjoy our conversation!Click HERE for the show notesClick HERE to grab a Suite Run mugThis episode is sponsored by:InsideTrackerInsideTracker is a personalized health and wellness platform like no other. What's their secret? Today, Whitney and Michelle talk about how Michelle stays motivated to train in the cold and dark climate of Alaska, the nutrition hacks that helped her achieve her goals, and how she's been able to balance being a mother with continuing to improve as a runner. It's depressing during the winter and manic during the summer just because you try to cram everything in in those three months. Whether it's hiking, fishing, camping, all of those things we try to cram in during a very short period of time.” (10:55) “I think college is when I realized how much I enjoyed it. It was my social time of the day and I realized how much I actually liked the activity of running.” (13:03) “Your biggest cheerleader is your past self. Nobody's cheering for you more than your past self. When I think back to myself as a college athlete, I was below average. So now to see the progress that I've been able to make over those fifteen years, it's really cool. Even that motivates me to keep going and see how much faster I can get.” (40:28) “I never thought I'd be faster after having kids. I am so stoked to welcome back episode 63 guest Michelle Baxter! Michelle chased down an 8-Year Dream, running a 2:58:24 at CIM, completing her sub-3 quest! I'm so inspired by her perseverance, grit, and commitment to her goals. The fire burns bright in Michelle and she has continually tweaked her training to get faster and stronger while increasing her mileage to a peak of 100M in her CIM buildup. We discuss: fueling tweaks, being patient, running her race/pace, on-course CIM support vs running in smaller races in AK, having her family there, strength training and how it helped her close a CRAZY fast the last 5M, perfect negative split execution (1:30:08 --> 1:28:16), the community at CIM, and the super positive support she has received from her blog/IG supporters. "For 8 years, I've been trying to run a sub-3 hour marathon. 8 years filled with injuries, pregnancies, postpartum time, and a lot of hard work. Sure, I wondered if it was actually possible—especially after 4 failed attempts—but I was also willing to take the risk because I knew if it did happen, it would be that much sweeter and one of the highlights of my running career. And boy is it sweet!" I'm so inspired by Michelle's breakthrough and am excited to see what's next! I hope you all enjoy this convo as much as we did! Michelle Baxter started training to run a mile at the age of 10 and her love of running has never wavered. Born in Moorhead, Minnesota, fate and family moved her to Anchorage, Alaska to run through some of the most treacherous running conditions on a daily basis. Some runners won't step foot outside to run in the cold weather but Michelle really has no choice. When Baxter isn't coaching others on running or working in her local running store, she's putting in the miles on Alaskan roads, sometimes in the pitch dark. “We can sometimes lose up to 30 minutes of daylight just in one week,” Baxter told us during the interview. These long battles with the darkness don't just make running more difficult but the constantly gloomy condition takes a toll on a person's demeanor. Michelle's love of running and running gear led her to launch a website and IG account - both called The Runner's Plate - where she chronicles her life as a cold-weather runner, coach, and mom. In this episode, Michelle talks to us about life in “The Last Frontier”, running while pregnant, her quest for the sub-3 hour marathon, battling the elements and the darkness, and the fun of buying new running gear. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/werunthis/support

I'm so excited to share bad ass mom Michelle Baxter’s aka @therunnersplate inspiring story! Michelle fell in love with running all the way back in the 1st grade and it's played an important role in her life ever since. Michelle is a mom of two young boys, Cullen (age 6) and Bjorn (age 15 months), and lives and trains in Anchorage, AK (so no more complaining about harsh-weather running, peeps). Just 9 months after having Cullen, she WON the RunFest Marathon in Anchorage! Michelle started a blog, The Runner’s Plate, 10 years ago and it's help her forge connections all over the world. Those connections have helped keep her going, to start coaching athletes who follow her, and keep the fire stoked for her chasing down her sub-3 marathon dream. Directly from Michelle: "Some may say my current marathon PR of 3:02 (6:57 pace) is close enough, but I can’t let go of this goal that keeps inspiring me every day to get out there and train. I know it takes the daily grind of workouts, two-a-days, strength sessions, etc. to get me to my goal, so I’ll keep working toward it until I’m satisfied." If you enjoy the conversation, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on.
