St. John's 10 game winning streak came to an end earlier this week with a 73-71 loss on the road to Villanova. It's the first time they have lost since 12/31 and perhaps it was a reality check for St. John's. I'm joined by the great Mike Vaccaro of the NY Post to discuss St. John's this season, the loss and what lessons can be learned from finding out you are not invincible. Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Andy Hunter, and Phil Thomas. We've focused a lot on how college sports brings in billions of dollars while the athletes have seen little to none of that for the majority of their history. Today, we start looking at how video games became the battleground where athletes pushed back against the system. On top of that, we dive into the history of likeness rights in video games. Topics discussed include: A dramatic reading of Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City, Kevin performs a series of wardrobe changes totally suited for a non-visual medium, arguably the greatest baseball player to ever exist, and that time a Panamanian dictator took on the video game industry. We travel to the Big Apple and beyond as New York Post sports columnist Mike Vaccaro shares tales from 35 years of living his childhood dream job. Isiah Thomas depicted in a tabloid clown suit. John Calipari's colorful language in a full rant. A postseason run by the Yankees in the wake of 9/11. Badminton (yes, badminton) at the Olympics. Fifty-nine hockey columns in 61 days. Six newspapers on the daily beat of Arkansas sports. That time he was fired. Vac recounts all this and more. He also discusses returning to work since his left leg needed to be amputated below the knee in 2022 because of health issues. Welcome back Vac. Vaccaro has been the lead sports columnist for the New York Post since 2002, and he has been named New York Sportswriter of the Year four times by the National Sports Media Association. He has covered the Olympics, World Cup soccer, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, World Series, Stanley Cup playoffs, Final Four and college football championship games numerous times. Vac not only writes about local, national, and international sports, he also writes a Sunday column called “Open Mike.” The Associated Press Sports Editors, the New York State Publishers Association, the New York Press Club, and the Poynter Institute are among those that have awarded Vaccaro more than 100 journalism honors during his career, which began in 1989 at the Olean (N.Y) Times Herald. He became the sports editor of the Northwest Arkansas Times in 1991, then wrote sports columns for the Middletown (NY) Times Herald-Record, Kansas City Star, and Newark Star-Ledger before joining the New York Post in November 2002. Vaccaro is the author of three books: “Emperors and Idiots” (about the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry); “1941 – The Greatest Year in Sports”; and “The First Fall Classic” (about the 1912 World Series). A native of West Hempstead, N.Y., Vaccaro graduated in 1989 from St. Bonaventure University, where his name was added to the Jandoli School Wall of Distinguished Graduates in 2022. Ira On Sports - Mike Vaccaro by Ira On Sports
Hour 1: We open the show talking about Craig Carton announcing that he's leaving WFAN. Gio has all the scuttlebutt about what's happening but he's not allowed to say. Gio said he saw Craig but he thinks he faked a phone call so he wouldn't have to talk to him. Gary Myers seems to think Tiki Barber is replacing Craig. Jerry is here for his first update and starts with audio from the Denver Nuggets championship parade. Rob Manfred talked about the A's moving to Vegas and the reverse boycott. Day one of the U.S. Open started yesterday and Jerry had your updated leaderboard. Antonio Brown's Arena League team was kicked out of the league. Stephen A. Smith backs Evan Roberts' take, calling Scherzer and Verlander ‘mercenary pieces of crap'. Stephen A. Smith also likes breasts, and sex too. Adam Schein was on the Awful Announcing podcast and said that Mike Francesa wanted him to take over afternoons when he retired. Gio wonders what that conversation would have sounded like. In the final segment of the hour, video has emerged from the Conor McGregor incident inside the Miami Heat's arena. He led a woman by the arm into a bathroom and his security guards are seemingly guarding the door. She is claiming sexual assault. Hour 2: A man drove his car into the bay in Patchogue. None of the articles or news reports are saying how he wound up in the bay. He is 33 years old. A caller wants to know if Gio is watching Temptation Island. Gio has not started watching the new season but he loved season 2. Gio's daughter vomited all over the bed and his dog went to eat it. This all happened while his wife was at a reality show podcast taping. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Nuggets Head Coach Michael Malone at the championship parade. Gio said he looked like an obnoxious Yankees fan. Day one of the U.S. Open was yesterday and we heard from Rickie Fowler. Jerry has audio from the upcoming documentary series, ‘Quarterback'. The Chiefs got their rings yesterday. Stephen A. Smith comments on Rose Montoya, the trans activist that showed her boobs on the White House lawn. Adam Schein talked about his childhood dream of being on WFAN but dreams change. In the final segment of the hour, Baltimore Ravens Hall of Famer Ray Lewis' son, Ray Lewis III, passed away at 28 years old, but there are no details yet on how he died. Hour 3: The Mets open up a series tonight against the Cardinals at Citi Field. Columnist Mike Vaccaro said Buck Showalter could be tarnishing his legacy right now with this Mets team. This is a team that should be competing for a World Series but they keep losing series to bad teams. The Mets are spending too much money for that and not living up to expectations. Jerry returns for an update but first Gio said he is not canceling any plans because someone might be getting sick. Jerry starts with Shohei Ohtani getting the win on the mound and hitting a monster HR. Rob Manfred talked about the A's fans as they move the team to Las Vegas. Jerry ran through the leaderboard after day 1 of the U.S. Open. Rickie Fowler is happy to be playing well. The Chiefs received their rings yesterday and Andy Reid said it's now on to 2023. The Nuggets had their championship parade and Head Coach Michael Malone had a few drinks and addressed the crowd. In the final segment of the hour, Gio doesn't think the Carton & Roberts combo was together long enough to look back like they were together forever. We talked about trying to get Boomer to 20 years as morning host at WFAN. We think it's 4 ½ more years. He can definitely do that. Then we talked about our Kickoff To Summer show during the pandemic and what a mess that was. Hour 4: Gary Myers is reporting that Tiki Barber will move to afternoons here at WFAN. We don't know who his sources are so I guess we will see. We talked about Craig Carton's monologue yesterday at the start of Carton & Roberts. What should the new afternoon show be called? Boomer loves the name ‘Tiki & Turtle', no matter who it is. Gio imagines what the promos might sound like if the new show is ‘Recco & Roberts'. Jerry returns for an update and asks Jerry about the possibility of ‘Recco & Roberts'. Jerry started with Shohei Ohtani as he got the win and hit his 22nd HR. Jerry has audio from Nuggets Head Coach Michael Malone after a few drinks at the championship parade. Gio said he's seen enough of Aaron Rodgers enjoying the nightlife in NYC.
Mike Vaccaro has been a columnist at the New York Post since 2002. Recently, he underwent a harrowing medical procedure where his lower left leg was amputated. He recently wrote about it in a Post column and came on the podcast to tell his ordeal. He tells it triumphantly as this was the best option for him to return to as much of a normal life as possible, and he recently returned to the golf course. In this episode, Vaccaro explained how covering sports during the Covid-19 pandemic allowed him to undergo health issues and still cover games while not being able to attend them anyway. After the health talk, the episode becomes a sports conversation that includes the NBA's competitive balance challenges, whether Nikola Jokic is the face of the league, and whether fans care about their home teams as they used to. He also comments about New York baseball in 2023, whether the New York Mets outspend the New York Yankees. Follow Mike Vaccaro on social media @MikeVacc.

Mike Vaccaro from the New York Post joins Lori after the Knicks picked up their 9th straight win in impressive fashion over the Celtics in Boston.
St. John's was hoping to get revenge to start the month of February against Seton Hall but would come up short. Much like the game where they were run out of the Prudential Center by 22 points, Seton Hall would use a few runs to end the first half and second half then a zone defense to stifle St. John's. From Andre Curbelo being ejected for slamming his glasses to disintegrating at the sight of a zone defense, St. John's continued to be a team incapable of handling adversity as they would be swept by the Pirates, 84-72.After the Seton Hall recap, (10:58) I'm joined by NY Post lead sports columnist Mike Vaccaro to take us through the glory days of St. John's and his start in Arkansas as a Sports Writer. As someone who has known St. John's Head Coach Mike Anderson for over 30 years, who better to talk to to try and figure out why the Red Storm are, as he wrote, behind schedule in year 4 with Mike Anderson. We discuss a young Mike Vaccaro covering those original 40 minutes of hell teams that Coach Nolan Richardson and Mike Anderson built. Why it worked at UAB, Mizzou, and Arkansas but hasn't at St. John's and so much more.Follow the podcast on Twitter:@EyeonStormPod = Eye on the Storm Podcast#sjubb
