Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. The Kings, originally formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Oakville, Ontario, are a Canadian rock band formed in 1977.  They gained prominence with their 1980 hit song “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide,” which resonated in both the United States and Canada. The original lineup was David Diamond (lead vocals, bass, songwriter), Sonny Keyes (vocals, keyboards, songwriter), Max Styles (currently Todd Reynolds) (drums), and Mister Zero (guitar, songwriter). The Kings toured extensively with artists like Bob Seger, Jeff Beck, The Beach Boys, and Eric Clapton. They appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and headlined the major Heatwave festival in August. Despite challenges in the late 1980s, The Kings experienced a revival when “This Beat Goes On” and “Switchin' To Glide” became radio hits in Chicago once again and received substantial play. The band continued touring throughout Canada and the U.S. during the remainder of the decade. The Kings most recent album is entitled ‘The Longest Story Ever Told' and now in 2024, The Kings, with their history of hits, over 2000 North American shows, and a devoted fan base, remain a hungry band with something to prove. "The Longest Story Ever Told" reaffirms their status as a rock band with songwriting depth. When asked, “Is there a theme for the album?", guitarist Mister Zero replied, “I don't think there is one other than trying to get 10 really good songs together”. "The Longest Story Ever Told" is The Kings' 7th studio album following the release of “Because of You”. A musical triumph, the new 10-track album features a lineup of iconic music industry veterans handling the mixing console, including Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple), Terry Brown (RUSH), Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine) and more.  Originally known as Whistleking, The Kings were formed in Vancouver, British Columbia and Oakville, Ontario, Canada. In 1980, after signing with Elektra Records, The Kings released the Bob Ezrin produced, platinum selling album "The Kings Are Here". The single “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide” caught on all over North America, with huge airplay in every major market. It stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for nearly six months, prompting an incendiary appearance on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. Now certified gold, “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide” was recently inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has received other accolades including the SOCAN Classic Award. The amazing video for it has over 5,500,000 views.  Now, in 2024, The Kings, with their history of hits, over 2000 North American shows, and a devoted fan base, remain a hungry band with something to prove. The Kings' singer/bassist David Diamond, guitarist Mister Zero, keyboardist Sonny Keyes, and drummer Todd Reynolds are happy to announce the release of their 7th album, “The Longest Story Ever Told". Opener “Always Off The Deep End” is a power pop gem about that friend who never does anything halfway, and people are getting up and dancing to “I Know So", an up-tempo romp with a rockin' sax section. Both songs come with super fun videos as well.      Americana Highways' writer John Apice, who requested an album before the U.S. campaign, raves over the whole album, calling out “A Rose For Your Stone” for its “Spanish-flavored horns.” Inspired by Spaghetti Westerns, the song is a story where the main character is anything but a hero. Apice writes, "lead singer David Diamond's voice is still as powerful as when he sang “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide” on the group's first album ‘The Kings Are Here'." Apice went on to praise Dave has having “one of the greatest R&R voices ever recorded….Diamond's vocals are as authoritative as Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Ray Davies,” and the band. “They sound like a nuclear reactor started up again. I know rock bands that can't stand toe to toe with them today. Just listen to the significance they display, the intonation & phrasing – rock n' roll at its best.”In true fashion for The Kings, there are epic-length rockers with hooks, like the title track “The Longest Story Ever Told”, where Diamond gives his take on the history of the band, and another two-song segue “Circle of Friends/Man That I Am", that reminds us of the value of friendship.  The album has range, including the heavy sounding "Nowhere to Go But Gone”, which states "There is no trip like a road trip". "When Dreams Come True" is a gorgeous wedding ballad that tells the story of the power of new beginnings. The album closes with three big rockers, “Clean Shot”, retro-rocker "She Don't Fool Around" and “Triangle Blues” which concerns, as Diamond says, “the third wheel that might be getting a bit too close for comfort". Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

This week on the Richard Crouse Show we talk about one of the most enduring Canadian rock and roll hit of all time. John Picard of The Kings said, “We never made a million dollars, but we had a song that people love and has stood the test of time.” 40 years ago The KIngs released their Bob Ezrin produced debut album, “The Kings Are Here” on the US major label Elektra Records. That same month, their smash hit single “This Beat Goes On / Switchin’ to Glide” first entered the Billboard Hot 100. And on August 23rd, 1980, The Kings closed the now-legendary Heatwave Festival, a giant outdoor concert some called "Punk Woodstock" that drew 100,000 people to Mosport Park, just north of Bowmanville, Ontario. The Kings played alongside Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, Nick Lowe and Rockpile, Teenage Head, the B-52’s, and more. The Kings and Teenage Head were the only bands that gave permission to be filmed. As Teenage Head’s audio has disappeared, the only surviving footage of that iconic night is of The Kings, and now you can see the 30-minute concert movie “The Kings: Live at Heatwave” at their YouTube channel. With band members Dave Diamond and John Picard a.k.a. Mister Zero, we talk about the only surviving, authentic, and original sync footage from that legendary concert and, of course, we’ll celebrate four decades of one of the greatest double-A sides ever “This Beat Goes On / Switchin’ to Glide…” Then, we go back to the vault to find an interview I did with producer Bob Ezrin from his Los Angeles home in 1994. Ezrin produced The Kings, but he is best known for his work with Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel, Andrea Bocelli and Phish. His career in music has spanned four decades and he continues to work with acts such as Deftones and Thirty Seconds to Mars. We talk about how he got his first big musical break producing Alice Cooper and some fascinating behind the scenes stories of working with Cooper and Peter Gabriel.

Mister zero has been around music since the late seventies. He's been the guitar player and founding member of Canada's "The Kings" since 1977. The Kings had a break out hit in the USA and Canada called "This Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide". At almost 6 minutes long it was played all over radio and was a bonafide hit. Their first album was produced by Bob Ezrin who also produced "the Wall" by Pink Floyd and some Kiss albums. The Kings have almost two million plays on their YouTube channel and are getting about 800 plays a day as I type. A humble and gracious guest and we had a really good talk about what it was like having such great success at an early age of pre video and post AM radio technology.
