Our exit today has us fighting drug cartels and rapidly evolving aliens. This week, we are talking about a pair of features starring one of our first ever best supporting performance winners, Orlando Jones. First, we will be talking about Double Take, written and directed by George Gallo. Next, we will talk about Evolution, written by Don Jakoby, David Diamond and David Weissman and directed by Ivan Reitman. While Double Take has Orlando Jones as more of a straight man to Eddie Griffin's character, Evolution allows Jones to be more of the comedic center. Along the way, we discuss Julianne Moore, Ghostbusters, Midnight Run, David Duchovny, Michael J. Fox, MadTV, alien creatures, lame action, Gilmore Girls, and plot twists galore! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. The Kings, originally formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Oakville, Ontario, are a Canadian rock band formed in 1977.  They gained prominence with their 1980 hit song “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide,” which resonated in both the United States and Canada. The original lineup was David Diamond (lead vocals, bass, songwriter), Sonny Keyes (vocals, keyboards, songwriter), Max Styles (currently Todd Reynolds) (drums), and Mister Zero (guitar, songwriter). The Kings toured extensively with artists like Bob Seger, Jeff Beck, The Beach Boys, and Eric Clapton. They appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and headlined the major Heatwave festival in August. Despite challenges in the late 1980s, The Kings experienced a revival when “This Beat Goes On” and “Switchin' To Glide” became radio hits in Chicago once again and received substantial play. The band continued touring throughout Canada and the U.S. during the remainder of the decade. The Kings most recent album is entitled ‘The Longest Story Ever Told' and now in 2024, The Kings, with their history of hits, over 2000 North American shows, and a devoted fan base, remain a hungry band with something to prove. "The Longest Story Ever Told" reaffirms their status as a rock band with songwriting depth. When asked, “Is there a theme for the album?", guitarist Mister Zero replied, “I don't think there is one other than trying to get 10 really good songs together”. The Kings' singer/bassist David Diamond, guitarist Mister Zero, keyboardist Sonny Keyes, and drummer Todd Reynolds are happy to announce the release of their 7th album, “The Longest Story Ever Told". Opener “Always Off The Deep End” is a power pop gem about that friend who never does anything halfway, and people are getting up and dancing to “I Know So", an up-tempo romp with a rockin' sax section. Both songs come with super fun videos as well.      Americana Highways' writer John Apice, who requested an album before the U.S. campaign, raves over the whole album, calling out “A Rose For Your Stone” for its “Spanish-flavored horns.” Inspired by Spaghetti Westerns, the song is a story where the main character is anything but a hero. Apice writes, "lead singer David Diamond's voice is still as powerful as when he sang “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide” on the group's first album ‘The Kings Are Here'." Apice went on to praise Dave has having “one of the greatest R&R voices ever recorded….Diamond's vocals are as authoritative as Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Ray Davies,” and the band. “They sound like a nuclear reactor started up again. I know rock bands that can't stand toe to toe with them today. Just listen to the significance they display, the intonation & phrasing – rock n' roll at its best.”In true fashion for The Kings, there are epic-length rockers with hooks, like the title track “The Longest Story Ever Told”, where Diamond gives his take on the history of the band, and another two-song segue “Circle of Friends/Man That I Am", that reminds us of the value of friendship.  The album has range, including the heavy sounding "Nowhere to Go But Gone”, which states "There is no trip like a road trip". "When Dreams Come True" is a gorgeous wedding ballad that tells the story of the power of new beginnings. The album closes with three big rockers, “Clean Shot”, retro-rocker "She Don't Fool Around" and “Triangle Blues” which concerns, as Diamond says, “the third wheel that might be getting a bit too close for comfort".   "The Longest Story Ever Told" is The Kings' 7th studio album following the release of “Because of You”. A musical triumph, the new 10-track album features a lineup of iconic music industry veterans handling the mixing console, including Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple), Terry Brown (RUSH), Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine) and more. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Since 1990, well over 1,050 children in the United States have died after being left in hot cars. An untold number of additional kids have been left with permanent brain damage and other long-term injuries. The largest percentage of these kids were unknowingly left in a vehicle by a parent or caregiver. No one wants to believe their brain is capable of this kind of failure. Many place blame on these parents, accusing them of using drugs or alcohol or of being inattentive, neglectful, abusive, or even murderous. In reality, most kids who die in hot cars have loving, caring, sober, and even overprotective parents. In this episode, I'll attempt to reduce the stigma surrounding hot car deaths by digging into how these tragedies happen to people just like you and me. SynopsisToday we note the birth and death anniversaries of two American composers of the 20th century. On today's date in 1915, American composer David Diamond was born in Rochester, New York. In 1940, Dmitri Mitropoulos, then the music director of the Minneapolis Symphony commissioned one of Diamond's best-known works.  Mitropoulos had specifically asked him for an upbeat piece of music. “Write me a HAPPY work,” asked Mitropoulos. “These are distressing times ... make me happy!” The 29-year-old composer responded with his popular “Rounds for String Orchestra,” which Mitropoulos premiered in Minneapolis in 1944.Also on today's date, in 1984, the American composer and teacher Randall Thompson died in Boston at the age of 85. Randall Thompson wrote three symphonies and some fine chamber works, but HIS best-known piece of music is this choral setting of “Allelujah” which was first performed at the opening of the Berkshire Music Center at Lenox, Massachusetts, in the summer of 1940, when Thompson was 41 years old.“[My ‘Alleujah' is] a very SAD piece,” said Thompson. “Here it is comparable to the Book of Job, where it is written, ‘The Lord giveth and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.'”Music Played in Today's ProgramDavid Diamond (1915-2005) Rounds (Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra; Gerard Schwarz, conductor.) “Hey little Donna, still wanna? You said to ring you up when I was in Toronna”. Or perhaps: “Nothing matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view!”That's right, the Kings are here, with new music and the “Always Off The Deep End” Special, featuring the single of the same name and more of their latest songs that sound as great as their timeless hit “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide”, which we'll revisit because how do you deny the tune that all those years ago got them signed to a world-wide deal back when world famous producer Bob (Pink Floyd The Wall, KISS, Peter Gabriel) Ezrin dropped by to visit and checked the band out and liked what he heard. He agreed to mix the tracks The Kings had recorded but soon discovered that the whole thing needed to be re-done. He approached ElektraRecords in Los Angeles with The Kings' tapes and the unknown band was signed. The project was released as “The Kings Are Here”. ‘Switchin' To Glide', was put out and did get noticed but the tune was really two songs in one and the band insisted they be released together. So when the segue ‘This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide' was released radio really picked up on it. Even at over five minutes in length, it caught on all over the USA and Canada with huge airplay in every major market and stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for six months. 40 plus years later, it sounds as good as it did the first time. So, Jeff and David Diamond and Mr. Zero dig in to all that and the newest Kings music too, created with collaborators including Ezrin, GGGarth Richardson, Harry Hess, and other world class producers and mixers. Synopsis In all, the American composer David Diamond wrote 11 Symphonies, spanning some 50 years of his professional career. The last dates from 1991, and the first from 1940, completed after his return from studies in Paris shortly before the outbreak of World War II. Diamond's first Symphony was premiered on today's date in 1941 by the New York Philharmonic led by the famous Greek conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos. Despite winning awards and positive comments from fellow composers ranging from Virgil Thomson to Arnold Schoenberg, for years Diamond struggled to make ends meet by playing violin in various New York City theater pit bands. More than one fellowship grant, however, enabled him to live abroad for extended stays, where, he said: “I can make my income last and live extremely well with my own villa and garden at a cost that would provide a hole-in-the-wall, coldwater flat in America . . . There is a spiritual nourishment, too, in that cradle of serious music [and] quiet for concentration that could never be found in an American city.” Defending his more traditional approach, Diamond wrote: “It is my strong feeling that a romantically inspired contemporary music, tempered by reinvigorated classical technical formulas, is the way out of the present period of creativity chaos in music... To me, the romantic spirit in music is important because it is timeless.” Music Played in Today's Program David Diamond (1915-2005) Symphony No. 1 Seattle Symphony; Gerard Schwarz, conductor. Side effects of statins include brain fog, joint pain, kidney injury, impaired liver function, heart failure, and even dementia. We have been told that statins improve heart health by lowering cholesterol. But it turns out that most of the information we've been given has been based on deceptive statistics.   David Diamond, a neuroscientist with a PhD in biology, has done a deep dive on the subject, since he himself was prescribed statins many years ago. He came to realize that there is a false narrative surrounding cholesterol and heart health. And that the data for studies showing the "efficacy of statins" has been manipulated to show favorable outcomes. Today he reviews the data and uncovers the truth about the problem with statins. He also offers a number of ideas for what to do instead of taking these increasingly popular prescription medications.   Follow David Diamond on Twitter: @ldlskeptic Take our podcast survey Check out our sponsors: FTP Financial, Marithyme Seafood Company, Optimal Carnivore Visit our website for more resources: westonaprice.org

Synopsis On today's date in 1944, a 29-year-old American composer named David Diamond had his Second Symphony premiered by the Boston Symphony under the famous Russian conductor Serge Koussevitzky. Diamond says he had written this music for the charismatic Greek maestro Dimitri Mitropoulos, then the music director of the Minneapolis Symphony. “Mitropoulos had given a fine performance of my First Symphony,” said Diamond. “When I showed him the score of the Second he said, ‘you must have the parts extracted at once!' As these were readied, I asked him whether he was planning to perform the work. He then told me he thought he would not stay on in Minneapolis, but said, ‘Why don't you send it to Koussevitzky?' I did so, and Koussevitzky [invited me to a] trial reading at Symphony Hall. When it was over, the orchestra applauded like crazy. Koussevitzky turned to me and said, ‘I will play!'” Successful as Diamond was back in 1944, for many decades thereafter his neo-Romantic symphonic scores were neglected until Gerard Schwartz's CD recordings of some of them with the Seattle Symphony sparked a revival.  By then, Diamond was in his 70s, and commented: “The romantic spirit in music is important because it is timeless.” Music Played in Today's Program David Diamond (1915-2005) — Symphony No. 2 (Seattle Symphony; Gerard Schwarz, cond.) Synopsis Despite its relation to both the physics of sound and pure mathematics, music, for most people – including composers – is essentially an emotional language. Despite its abstract sound, that's the case of this orchestral piece, which premiered in Rochester, New York, on today's date in 1938. The music was by a then 22-year-old American composer named David Diamond, and bears the title: “Elegy in Memory of Ravel.” Nine years earlier, as a precocious adolescent, Diamond had met Ravel during the French composer's American tour of 1928. Ravel was impressed with the lad's talent, and encouraged Diamond to pursue a career in music, as did George Gershwin who served on a jury that awarded one of Diamond's works first prize. Diamond lost both these important mentors in 1937, with the sudden deaths of first Gershwin, then Ravel. The day after learning of Ravel's death, Diamond began work on his “Elegy.” “It is an expression of terrible loss,” recalled Diamond in an interview many decades later. “As the piece began to take shape, almost unconsciously, I heard it as a ritual – an elegy, but a ritualistic one. I asked that there be no applause at the end.” The work's 1938 premiere performance was conducted by Howard Hanson, then the head of the Eastman School of Music and the conductor of its famous orchestra. Diamond's modern, frankly dissonant idiom didn't sit well with Hanson's more conservative tastes. Diamond recalled Hanson asking “David, why do you have to write such modern music?” Even so, Hanson respected both Diamond and his music enough to conduct the new piece. Synopsis On today's date in 1903, violinist and conductor Harry West led the very first performance by the Seattle Symphony. At that time, the orchestra comprised just 24 players. For their first program, the aptly named Maestro “West” conducted Schubert and Rossini, two long-dead classical masters, and also programmed works by three living composers: Max Bruch, Jules Massenet, and Pablo Sarasate. More recently, under music director Gerard Schwarz, the Seattle Symphony earned worldwide attention with its recordings of both classical and contemporary works, including critically acclaimed recordings of symphonic works by modern American masters like Howard Hanson, David Diamond, and Alan Hovhaness, as well as newer pieces by a younger generation of American composers including Richard Danielpour and Stephen Albert. That tradition continued under Gerard Schwarz's successor Ludovic Morlot, who took particular interest in fostering music from Seattle composers, including composers within the orchestra itself. And the Seattle Symphony commissioned and premiered a work by the American composer John Luther Adams entitled “Become Ocean,” which went on to win the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Music and the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Synopsis In 1944, while the Second World War ground on in Europe and Asia, David Diamond's “Rounds for String Orchestra” received its premiere performance by the Minneapolis Symphony and its then conductor, Dimitri Mitropoulos.  “Write me a happy work,” Mitropoulos had asked Diamond. “These are distressing times, most of the difficult music I play is distressing. Make me happy.” To some in 1944, “Rounds” sounded as if Diamond had turned to traditional American folk music, but, as the composer put it, “the tunes are original. They sound like folk tunes, but they are really the essence of a style that must have been absorbed by osmosis.” Even the stodgy conservative music critic of the St. Paul Pioneer Press expressed her grudging admiration: “it reveals a good deal of talent and resourcefulness” was her verdict. Reviewing a subsequent Boston Symphony performance under Koussevitzky, New York Times critic Olin Downes was much more enthusiastic. He wrote: “It is admirably fashioned, joyous and vernal. There is laughter in the music.” “Rounds” has gone on to become one of Diamond's most frequently performed works. Perhaps joy and laughter in music remains as rare and precious a commodity now as it was back in those distressed days of 1944. 2 (Seattle Symphony; Gerard Schwarz, cond.) Episode SummaryAn unusual outfit for an unusual man, Steve Swayne unravels his connections to knitting and jazz and divulges how an almost perfectionist learned to improvise, find his own authentic self, and become an expert on Steven Sondheim all while describing an outfit that few would dare to wear. A pattern emerges of a man who will not be contained by rigid categorization and is leading us by example into a more tolerant, musically rich world, in this episode of The Sydcast.Syd FinkelsteinSyd Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He holds a Masters degree from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Professor Finkelstein has published 25 books and 90 articles, including the bestsellers Why Smart Executives Fail and Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent, which LinkedIn Chairman Reid Hoffman calls the “leadership guide for the Networked Age.” He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Management, a consultant and speaker to leading companies around the world, and a top 25 on the global Thinkers 50 list of top management gurus. Professor Finkelstein's research and consulting work often relies on in-depth and personal interviews with hundreds of people, an experience that led him to create and host his own podcast, The Sydcast, to uncover and share the stories of all sorts of fascinating people in business, sports, entertainment, politics, academia, and everyday life. Steve SwayneSteve Swayne teaches courses in art music from 1700 to the present day, opera, American musical theater, Russian music, and American music. He has received fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. His articles have appeared in The Sondheim Review, the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, American Music, Studies in Musical Theatre, the Indiana Theory Review, and The Musical Quarterly. He has written two books—How Sondheim Found His Sound (University of Michigan Press, 2005) and Orpheus in Manhattan: William Schuman and the Shaping of America's Musical Life (Oxford University Press, 2011; winner of the 2012 ASCAP Nicolas Slonimsky Award for Outstanding Musical Biography)—and is at work on three projects: 1) the development of the chamber musical, with a focus on composer/lyricist William Finn; 2) intersections between music, neuroscience, and ethics; and 3) American composer David Diamond. He was an inaugural recipient in 2017 of the Professor John Rassias Faculty Award, given to faculty for their exceptional educational outreach to alumni. In addition to his work at Dartmouth, he has taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; the University of California, Berkeley; and Quest University, and he is the president-elect of the American Musicological Society, the premier organization for musicologists in the English-speaking world. He is also an accomplished concert pianist.Insights from this episode:Secret to how Steve can play a song after listening to it only once and how that skill is useful in many aspects of life. How to deal with standing out by standing out even more and using that to direct the conversation you want people to have about you.Benefits of living your life internally as you express yourself externally. How to have an authentic conversation involving race in a racially complicated world. Strategies artists use to appeal to audiences to increase their success and how that can impact their perceived value as an artist.Benefits of working with Steven Sondheim as his biographer and becoming more of an expert on Steven Sondheim than Sondheim himself. Quotes from the show:“I am a clothes horse by nature and so I have a shoezeum at home and it's almost exclusively in Doc Martens [shoes].” – Steve Swayne“There are different ways of being you rather than the ones, maybe, that you have chosen or that society has chosen for you.” – Steve Swayne“It's very interesting to think about how people perceive others … from how we look and how we dress and you're actually turning [that perception] on its head to share a lesson.” – Syd Finkelstein “As humans, all of us can do what any other human in all of the human race has done, is doing, or has a dream of doing. We are all capable of doing all of it.” – Steve SwayneOn studying east coast Jewish composers: “I learned a lot of things that I never would have thought to know.” – Steve SwayneOn the appropriateness of telling a story of a community you are not part of: “I have a view of that community that I can only have because I'm not in it and things that might be transparent to other people, I begin to question.” – Steve Swayne“We are not what we present necessarily; because I'm black doesn't mean I can only do things marked as black … we contain multitudes, all of us.” – Steve Swayne“I feel like we are in an era now where with this idea of having the nerve, the audacity to speak for some other group that you are not part of is really looked down upon.” – Syd Finkelstein “I want to be about the business of increasing the circle of we and decreasing the circle of they.” – Steve SwayneOn elitism in general culture: “There's a thing about whatever is considered popular by the masses that somehow gets denigrated … we seem to have all these rules in place for what's acceptable, for what's good culturally and we don't know who wrote those rules.” – Syd FinkelsteinOn Steven Sondheim's style of composing: “The way he conveys the life of a character through his choice of notes is very much the way certain opera composers do that type of work.” – Steve SwayneStay Connected: Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The Sydcast Steve SwainInstagram: @dr._kiltmartensWebsite: Dartmouth College - The Montgomery Fellows ProgramSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify.
