This afternoon, Joe and Apollo began the show with an informative lesson on the mysterious creature called a hyrax, noting that Apollo shares a striking similarity to these vicious rodents. Later, the pair discussed the horrific attack that took place on New Year's in New Orleans, as well as the Cybertruck that blew up in front of Trump Tower. The duo then switched gears to discuss Elon Musk, Trump, and the issue of H-1B visas, and closed with a conversation about their 2025 resolutions!
Today's song is the song of the Behema Daka Teme'Ah, the Small Unkosher Animal , and it sings the Song of Tehilim 125,4: בְּהֵמָה דַּקָּה טְמֵאָה אוֹמֶרֶת. הֵיטִיבָה יְיָ לַטּוֹבִים וְלִישָׁרִים בְּלִבּוֹתָם: (תהילים קכה ד) (David Hamelech makes a request) Do good Hashem to good people and to the upright in their hearts. Who is this small unkosher animal? Rav Chaim Kanievsky says it refers to the hyrax and the hare, which are listed in the the unkosher animals in the Torah. Why are they singing this song? He brings down from Bereshit Raba 12,69 on the pasuk where David Hamelech says that God created rocks as a protection for the hyraxes and hares. There's a type of bird from above, like a hawk or a falcon, that wants to come down and prey on them. What protects them? Rock-crevices and cracks, that they run into for protection. Says the Midrash, If this is the case for an unkosher animal, that God created these cracks in the crevices for them to protect themselves, what do you think Hashem created in the merit of Avraham Avinu, as it says the world was created for Abraham Avinu. The midrash says, Abraham , rescrambled means the world was created for us. God made so many good things for the unkosher animals, which symbolize the nations of the world. We see from here that the purpose of the rocks is just for them. So when the hyrax and the hare see that Hashem created these rocks, he's the one that says, "Oh , You created rocks for me? Surely you have to do good for the good people." That is his song. This is truly a fascinating concept! Although this is the song of the hyrax and the hare, the pasuk also talks about how God made mountains for the mountain goats to run on. This is a concept that we see repeatedly. Every animal has its habitat, and every animal has its protection. A Machseh is a shelter. God creates shelters of protection. As we say, Ki Atah Machsi /HashemYou are my refuge. Hashem built places for things to run to. We can say the hole in the wall is for the mouse to run into. For all creatures that are hunted, Hashem created that trap door, that protective haven to run into. And as we say, it's not only the rabbit that's singing the song. When we look into creation, that creature causes us to sing the song. The Chovot Halevavot talks at length about this in Shaar Bechina . We are always supposed to look into creation and learn things from creation. This is a huge lesson of looking at the protective systems . Hashem built in, for all species, ways to be protected, and ways to run away in time of danger. This is similar to a statement of Mishna at the end of Masechet Kiddushin, where one of the Tanaaim says, Did you ever see a lion that had to work? Did you ever see a tiger that had to work? Did you ever see a fox that had to work? The animal kingdoms don't work, and yet Hashem gives them Parnasa. They're all created, He says, to serve Me. Shouldn't I not need to work? But what am I going to do? Adam HaRishon sinned and there was a curse. But barring that curse, whatever Hashem does for the animal world, He will surely do for our world. That's really the Mishna's point here. If that's what He did for the hyrax and the hare, what's He doing for me? We have to look and see, says Hovot Halevavot, that Hashem created for every animal, the proper tools for his parnasa . For example, the anteater has a long sticky tongue that ants get stuck to, and so on. This is the beautiful, eye opening concept of the rocks of refuge for the hare.

Grant and Jaclyn both from farms were in Avondale and Mauchline YF' respectively. At a young age they met at the Highland Show and in Grants words he was in the car home with his mum asking 'can you get a bus to Tarbolton?' - a proper meet cute, eh? They have set up as PT's under the name GJCoaching and hope one day to have a gym on their farm so they don't have to rent the one they currently do in Hamilton. Both compete at fitness competitions and have even competed at the Hyrax world championships against some Love Island competitors..much to Jaclyn happiness...and for that matter Grant's dismay! He did win the farmers carry though so it's a win really! Both play an active role at Grants farm and are involved in Young Farmers which has lead them to create the first Fittest Farmer for SAYFC members in the west region with intentions of making it national in the future. This is just a bit of craic and three people taking the piss out of each other...a personal favourite is during the love island chat I should go on to which Grant says "Oh here comes the camera man onto set"...we can't all look like Greek gods, Grant! Or maybe you can...sign up to GJCoaching now! Enjoy!

Here to prove how rapid palate expanders change how much airflow can go through the nose, Orthodontist Dr Bret Christensen of Lewiston Idaho. He has incredible data and cases so this is definitely one to watch, but you will learn so much either way! Dr Bret has been gathering data for years using the Rhinometer which measures airflow through the nasal passages to determine nasal air volume. Dr Bret has been an orthodontist and was trained in traditional orthodontics and he will explain what the rationale for why orthodontist do what they do, and why he had a change of perception when it came to expansion We will discuss. Rapid palate expanders, Schwartz appliances, Hyrax, snore guard appliances, adult expansion, and how nasal breathing is the key to sleep medicine. We also will discuss and debunk some common myths such as: 1) if you do traditional ortho you are dooming your child 2) the rapid expanders causes scarring of the sutures. This is a juicy episode that we hope gives people hope, trust that expanding will help their child, and we can gain back growth of the jaws. Another really positive part of this episode is the proof of improvement in the nasal airways means often times we can naturally shrink enlarged tonsils and adenoids and snoring in children, and we may not have to do surgery. This excerpt was taken from: https://dbortho.com/blogs/orthodontic-digest/lectures-and-hands-on-session-with-mse-creator-prof-won-moon-achieve-even-maxillary-and-mid-facial-parallel-expansion In partnership with DB Orthodontics, MSE Creator Professor Won Moon presented The Moon Principles by Won: Evolution of Micro-Implants Supported Midfacial Skeletal Expander (MSE) with Retrospective Overview, the Latest Development, and Prospective Advanced Applications. This event took place last May at the Radisson Blu Hampshire, Leicester Square—a must-attend for orthodontists with an interest in creating even parallel expansion of the anterior and posterior regions. In his lecture, Professor Moon demonstrated how the MSE is set apart from many traditional expanders. He detailed the evolution of expanders, discussed the challenges associated with traditional methods, and how the MSE overcame these challenges. He presented many of his successful case studies, best practice and troubleshooting protocols for the MSE.What is the MSE?The MSE is a unique micro-implant assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE). In approximately 2004, following the recent availability of Mini-implants in the USA, Dr Moon began investigating different methods of mid facial expansion. Following his early designs of MARPEs, and the growth of similar appliances globally, the term MARPE became a generic term, although designs and protocols differed greatly. The MSE was a natural development from the MARPE; it differentiated itself from the pack. The MSE gives parallel expansion in both the anterior and posterior regions, in comparison to the v shaped anterior expansion created with traditional MARPE, Hyrax or other expansion devices.MSE's success lies in its bi-cortical engagement. The protocol for securing the MSI involves inserting four mini-implants into the palatal bone and the nasal cavity; creating effective parallel expansion, and creating more of a mid-facial expansion as well as a maxillary expansion. The MSE also creates relatively parallel expansion by expanding the inferior as well as the superior aspects of midfacial structure because of the bicortical engagements. This, in turn, maximizes airway enlargement.Professor Moon also explained how opening the patients' airways has improved the breathing and quality of sleep of many of his patients.Combined with a face mask, the MSE becomes a powerful tool when treating class III patients. The MSE can create a significantly greater amount of forward movement of the maxilla; beyond the scope of traditional face mask approaches. It promotes posterior force loading instead of middle or anterior loading. Traditionally, typically expanders are positioned more anteriorly, and the MSE is positioned in a more distal area – expansion is created into the nasal bone area and back into the zygomatic arch.Professor Moon presented many clinical cases showing how the MSE has been used in the treatment of young, older and mature patients; even extending to patients in their 50's. Dr Moon also covered common mistakes to avoid; including the recommendation of a manual driver instead of motorised, and the importance of choosing the correct length of mini-implant to ensure full engagement in both layers of the cortical bone.Airway and Sleep Group hails the research provided by Dr. Moon and promotes the development of a healthy airway using the same principles of craniofacial orthopedics. "Hello again Word Lovers!" In this episode we take a look at the etymology of the names of places. Like so many of the topics explored in this programme, the field of interest is virtually infinite (Ed - Well, Global Charly) so Charly is going to isolate some examples and dig down. Personal Names Charly starts by reminding us that our names have meanings, and many people do not know what their name means. Philip for example means "lover of horses", Christopher is someone who carries Christ, Charles just means a man or husband, Sara (Sarah) comes from a word for Princess, Elizabeth from Hebrew means "My God is in abundance" and Merrick means "biggest knuckle in the fist" or "longest finger in the hand!" Common English suffixes Charly first explores the meaning of Oxford, which unsurprisingly means the place where the oxen (cattle) crossed the river. Ox being cattle and Ford being a river crossing. Ford, Castle and Church are all very common suffixes in English place names that have obvious meaning, -ton is also very common, a contracted form of "town". Although, this is not always the case. Buxton is formed from Buck Stones. We discover how Charly's passion for etymology began in this episode as he recounts his teacher explaining that Hoar frost meant grey frost and the district he lived in was called Harwood derived from Hoar. Cester/Chester Another common suffix is Cester/Chester which indicates a Roman army camp site. Manchester derives from an army camp of an Anglo Saxon named Mamm. The original word meaning "breast" or "breast like hill" but the modern word derives from the Latinisation (Mamucium or Mancunio) of the original name. We see how the word camp becomes "field" in French and forms the root of our word "Champion". We go into even further depth on the word "Welsh" and "Wales" in the associated article on our website www.bulldogz.org/post/interesting-etymologies-11-place-names Slav Slav is from "slovo" and literally means "people of the word" but via the Romans who got their slaves from the region, we get the word "slave". Slav and Slave are similar in almost every European language (not to be confused with Polish "unwilling" or Russian "work"). Spain The Spanish like to claim the name comes from the Romans christening the land "Hispania" but the Carthaginians had named the region Ispania or I-Shaphan which meant Land or Coast of the Hyraxes. This is an animal that is common in the middle east and it is believed the Carthaginians, being unfamiliar with rabbits as a species, used the word Hyrax instead. Iberia is believed to come from the name of the river Ebro which flows through Zaragoza, which itself has an interesting etymology. The original settlement was called Salduie before Caesar Augusto, the Roman Emperor founded a Roman settlement on the site. The Romans referred to the city as Caesaraugusta and this transmuted to Saraqusṭa during the Arabic period of rule, showing the path to the current name. Bahamas - Bajas Mares (Spanish for Low Seas) Honduras - From Spanish Hondos - depths. There are a wealth of place and country names that are named after the person who founded or discovered them and some have a murky or disputed heritage. But that is for another episode!

Jason and Alan had the privilege to speak with Dr. Rebecca Bockow, a dual trained orthodontist/periodontist and cutting edge advocate for understanding airway. Rebecca has been teaching at Spear Education for a couple of years and will be one of the instructors in the newly revamped "interdisciplinary treatment planning" course that Spear is putting together. She's also been featured on our "Queens of the Airway" episodes as well. The Dental Hacks had a wide ranging discussion with Rebecca which included: How does a dentist decide on a dual specialty and why orthodontics/periodontics? (spoiler: she almost ended up as a prosthodontist!) Expansion before expansion was cool The Airway "Ah HA" moment How teaching is a type of marketing for a reknowned specialist like Rebecca The paradigm shift to treating younger patients orthodontically Pediatric airway screening with a one page questionnaire What in the whole world needs to change to better address airway issues How can regular dentists understand and evaluate the literature about airway How to rehabilitate a patient with excessive wear/gummy smile and more Looking at how the malocclusion/skeletal development came to be What's Rebecca's "elevator pitch" about how to incorporate airway into your practice How do gummy smiles and airway relate to each other? How to open the palatal suture once you're an adult (TAD expanders vs. Hyrax expanders) Surgery + orthodontics = airway magic What % of people breathe through their nose? How do we evaluate tongue tie? Becca is a genius and if you get a chance to see her teach, DO NOT MISS IT! Some links from the show: The Voices of Dentistry is just over two months away! Mammals are an incredibly diverse and highly successful group of animals. They include some of the tallest, heaviest and fastest animals around today, as well as our own species. For over 100 years, biologists have attempted to build mammal evolutionary trees using anatomical data. This work has provided the basis for our understanding of mammal relationships. Within the last 30 years, new technologies have enabled scientists to cheaply sequence molecular data (e.g. DNA and amino acid sequences) from thousands of mammal species. Interestingly, molecular trees reveal close relationships between some very different looking mammals. To guide us through this mammal renaissance, we are joined by Dr Robert Asher from the Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge, UK.
In order to find correlations between skin gland morphology and specific ethological features, the cutaneous glands of the foot pads of Procavia capensis were studied by histological and various histochemical methods and by electron microscopy. In the foot pads, abundant specific eccrine skin glands occur, which consist of coiled tubular secretory portions and coiled ducts. The wall of the secretory part is composed of cuboidal glandular cells and myoepithelial cells. Among the glandular cells two types occur: clear and dark cells. Clear cells have numerous mitochondria and form a basal labyrinth, indicating fluid transport. Dark cells, which stain strongly with periodic acid-Schiff, contain a highly developed perinuclear Golgi apparatus, large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum and many secretory granules indicating production of glycoproteins. Cytokeratin (CK) 19 was found in secretory compartments and ducts, CK14 only in duct cells. Single cells of the secretory coils and ducts may be stained with antibodies against antimicrobial peptides. Some glandular cells contain proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive nuclei especially in the ducts indicating an increased cell proliferation. Terminal transferase (TdT)-mediated d-UTP nick-end labeling-positive nuclei can be detected predominantly in the secretory coils and rarely in the transitional portions between ducts and end pieces. We suppose that proliferating cells migrate from the ducts to the secretory coils. The secretory product of the eccrine cutaneous glands seems to improve the traction between the foot pads of these animals and the steep and smooth rock formations among which they live.
