Moazzam Begg was born in the suburbs of Birmingham in 1968, grew up in Moseley, and holds dual UK-Pakistani citizenship. During his secondary education, Begg became a member of the Birmingham Lynx street gang, which was formed to combat persecution by far-right anti-immigrant groups. Begg attended Solihull College and then the University of Wolverhampton, where he studied Law for two years before dropping out.Begg became interested in Islam during a family vacation to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in his late teens. He returned to Pakistan in late 1993 and decided to cross the Pakistan–Afghan border to go to a camp where US-backed nationalist and Islamic insurgents were training to fight the Soviet-backed Afghan government. Begg admitted that he travelled to Bosnia in the early 1990s to support Muslims during the war after being inspired by the “mujahideen's” dedication. He stated that he was “terrified by some of the reports... of the horrors taking place there.” In 1994, he joined a foundation that dealt with Bosnian Muslims. Begg also attempted to visit Chechnya during its battle with Russia in the early 1990s. While he believed that “fighting wasn't out of the question,” he claims that he did not take part in the armed battle but did provide financial aid to foreign militants. At the time of his arrest in 1994, anti-terrorist police allegedly discovered night vision goggles, a flak jacket, and “extreme Islamist literature” in his residence. Begg argued that the goggles and flak jacket were from his charity work in Bosnia and Chechnya, and he denied having any “extremist Islamist material.” Begg, according to his father, has been collecting military memorials as a passion since childhood.According to the Pentagon, Begg received extensive training at three al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist camps. Begg was identified as a “member of al-Qaeda and affiliated organisations” who was "engaged in hostilities against the United States and its coalition partners” in Afghanistan and “provided support to al-Qaeda terrorists, by providing shelter for their families,” according to the statement. Begg rejected all of these allegations, claiming that he “never planned, assisted, or participated in any assaults on Westerners.”

Bashar al-Assad like his father before him, presided over a state of terror, with disappearances, secret police repression and a punitive state machinery that governed through fear. Assad styled himself as an anti-imperialist when in reality he had colluded with the West in past conflicts and after 9/11 Syria became a favourite place for the Americans to render suspects for horrific torture.Today we have Moazzam Begg who is the senior director of CAGE and author of enemy combatant – a book about his time as a detainee first in Bagram and then in Guantanamo. On today's show, I'm talking to Suhaiymah Manzoor Khan about her latest book, Seeing For Ourselves: And even stranger possibilities. Suhaiymah is one of the most thoughtful, intelligent and intro-spective people I know, and I absolutely love all the work she is doing and what she puts out into the world. Seeing For Ourselves feels quite different to Suhaiymah's other books, and offers more personal reflections on identity, faith, belonging, grief, love and activism. In her book, Suhaiymah encourages us to move beyond the white western gaze, and focus on the only gaze that really matters: that of Allah. Its such a powerful little book, forcing us to rethink our values, ideas and intentions, and encouraging us to embrace our true authentic selves, away from the gazes upon us. Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan is a writer, poet and educator disrupting understandings of history, race, knowledge and violence. She works to equip herself and others with the tools and faith to resist the unliveable conditions we find ourselves in, and work towards another reality.Suhaiymah's latest book, Seeing for Ourselves: And even stranger possibilities came out with Hajar Press in September 2023. The war on terror, a US-led strategy that saw deadly interventions in the Muslim world, has transformed a generation of Muslims. Some, like my guest today, unwittingly got caught up in this mindless campaign and 21 years after the events of 9/11, we still feel the aftereffects of programmes that placed every Muslim in categories, moderate or extreme, good and bad, loyal or disloyal. Moazzam Begg, a former Guantanamo detainee upon his release, has been a tireless campaigner for the truth, exposing its lies and deceits. In the process, he and his organisation CAGE international have tactically contacted non-Muslim sympathisers and wider Human Rights organisations. But I asked him about the risks involved in this strategy. Many a time, Muslims that receive such support are forced to compromise. The left wants Islam to change and come with various social positions we find problematic. The right often possesses a chauvinism that calls upon Muslims to accept a secondary role in society. I ask Moazzam to conceptualise how he navigates these binaries. Set in the legally dubious post-9/11 world, it tells the gripping story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi and his rendition to the infamous ex-Soviet airbase, Bagram in Afghanistan and then Guantanamo Bey. Slahi was falsely accused of links to Al-Qaeda and without recourse to due process, international treaties and conventions and the so-called cherished principles of the US constitution, he ended up spending 14-long years in Camp X-ray. Yet the power of the human spirit and his Islamic convictions prevailed and he returned to his home country of Mauritania, exonerated of any wrongdoing. But the film left many unanswered questions. Nancy Hollander, advokat. Spike Bowman, f.d. senior rådgivare i frågor rörande nationell säkerhet på FBI. Gösta Hultén, ordförande i Guantánamogruppen. Av: Maria Hansson Botin. Producent: Ida Lundqvist. Hardtalk speaks to the British Muslim campaigner Moazzam Begg. He was detained at Guantanamo Bay between 2003 and 2005, and then last February he was held for seven months in a British prison. In October all terrorism-related charges against him were dropped and he walked free. He believes that current counter-terrorism measures are fuelling the very problems they are trying to tackle and are alienating and radicalising some Muslims. So how should Muslim communities work with the authorities to prevent the extremists carrying out attacks?(Photo: Moazzam Begg. Credit: Rob Stothard/Getty Images)
