Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

Strum your sitar and prepare to launch all Eagles as Miles and Charlie once more become the Space Scamps as they make a second trip to the moon for three more episodes of Gerry Anderson's ‘Event Horizon meets Garth Marenghi's Darkplace' show Space 1999 (Miles is now worried he has created a monster by showing Charlie this show) and in doing so, get to talk about psychadelic trippiness and Kano's obsession with Computer in ‘Black Sun,' Christopher Lee (although he's totally phoning it in,) and the dispatch of a weasly middle manager in ‘Earthbound' and then with ‘The Troubled Spirit,' Halloween comes a little early and it's probably more spooky than whatever we'll end up doing for our Halloween episode… EPISODES DISCUSSED: Black Sun (11:32), Earthbound (34:20) and The Troubled Spirit (58:40)Talking Points Include: More Space 1999, Death Stranding, a trip to Scotland, the science is impossible, Moon Base Alpha's limited resources, British Pessimism vs. American Gung-Ho, Gene Roddenberry would never, Hard SF has a tendency to go full magic weirdness, Bohemian Rhapsody deserves it's rep, Christopher Lee is phoning it in, Simmons is the David Brent in Space, cowardly heroes, our brave explorers enjoying shouting MMMMUUUUUUUUTAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNT like in ‘Mission of the Darians,' Charlie repeats a Johnny Byrne joke from the last episode, awesome sitar music this is the most halloween episode we've done for the show, a wicked burn from Charlie's old teacher Mr. Jafferji, is Moonbase Alpha a liminal space? M. Night Shyamalan films and surprisingly… some Star Trek.

Not DnD is a weekly show discussing tabletop roleplaying games. Each week EN Publishing's @tabletopjess interviews the creators behind different tabletop roleplaying games that aren't D&D! You can watch the live recording every Monday at 5pm ET / 10pm BST on YouTube or Twitch, or catch up with the podcast platform of your choice by searching 'Not DnD'. Here's the games we will be looking at in October 2024. Space 1999 - 14th October The Year is 1999. A cataclysmic accident has sent Earth's moon hurtling into space, leaving behind a broken planet. Life has become a fight for survival for the people of Moonbase Alpha as their journey takes them far deeper into the universe than they ever thought possible! This game has you playing one of the crew of Moonbase Alpha on their search for a new home. The game is now available to pre-order, and Andrew Peregrine will be on the show to tell us about what to expect in the frontiers of space! Paint The Town Red - 21st October Paint the Town Red is a game about being dead. You play as a vampire chasing the sensation of feeling alive, to escape the rot they feel in their soul. This game is about depression, partying and falling in love, and explores themes of trauma, vice and loneliness. The game is published by SoulMuppet publishing and is built on the engines of Orbital Blues and Best Left Buried. Zachary Cox will be joining us to share more about the game which will be live on backerkit soon! Bludgeon TTRPG System - 28th October The Bludgeon TTRPG System is a crunchy, tactical RPG with flexible mechanics. The game is made by a team of Indian designers and artists and is currently in development and being play tested. The games core design centres around power sources the characters have (whether Martial, Chakra, Primal, Arcane or Divine), and a scaling system where power and experience does not mean bigger numbers. Instead, it means that you're a more rounded character with more options via adaptations, class abilities, and passives skills. Designer Tejas Oza will be on Not DnD to share more about the game, and how you can get involved.

This week's eldritch alien threat is, for once, not intent on killing everyone on the base; instead it takes the more focused approach of killing everyone on a deep space probe and then hunting down and destroying Moonbase Alpha's resident Italian big game hunter. Oh, and traumatising an entire generation of nerdy moppets in the 1970s.

Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

After watching some times Star Trek delved into Cosmic Horror, Miles might have told Charlie ‘Oh, this stuff is tame, let's watch Space 1999' instead. So, for this episode, we are now rebranding as #spacescamps as we talk about the greatest collection of space adventuring office workers Moonbase Alpha has to offer in Gerry Anderson's Space 1999. After we briefly gloss over the opening episode ‘Breakaway,' we discuss Brian Blessed being out-hammed by the amazingly named JOHN SHRAPNEL in ‘Death's Other Dominion' (27:36), things get a bit tentacle monster in ‘Dragon's Domain' (40:26), watch some amazing class politics and screams of ‘MUUUUUUUTANT' in ‘Mission of the Darians,' (51:57) and bring it all to a close in ‘End of Eternity' (01:01:09) as we meet a crazed immortal psychopath, which, if you watch the previous episode just come to the conclusion that this happens a lot in Space 1999, it's not Star Trek, but it's a hell of a lot of fun! Launch All Eagles! Stop being weird! Talking Points Include: A FUCKING NUCLEAR EXPLOSION ON THE MOON. Balataro, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the 2016 Ghostbusters film is fun, The Mad Max movies, Date Movies, Miles ruining ‘The Day After Tomorrow' for the person in front of him (EDITOR NOTE: While Ian Holm is the British actor in question, he doesn't deliver the final toast to Manchester United in the scene, that's actually Richard McMillan) What is Space 1999? Supermarionation, Gerry Anderson, The Elevator Pitch, the Earth is fucked, Christopher Lee in an episode we did not watch, Space 1999's budget is akin to bullying 1970s Doctor Who for it's lunch money, the cast of Space 1999 are not qualified space heroes, Koenig is far more Office Boss than Space Cowboy, it's nice to have our characters called Nick and Paul and Adamn, but it does make it hard to distinguish, Charlie's notes are sometimes as complex as ‘man wearing neck-tie… evil?', Peter Wyngarde, BRIAN BLESSED, JOHN SHRAPNEL, Grant Morrison comics we wouldn't reread, asbestos everywhere, Brian's fate in this episode, Michael Sheard (Who actually plays Ozzel in Empire Strikes Back) some good horror beats that devolve straight into Garth Marenghi's Darkplace-esque shenanigans, they'll never meet anyone nice, Charlie has started watching ‘Sapphire and Steel,' ‘it's a metaphor for capitalism,' Barbaria Bain's leg envy re: Joan Collins, Koenig's ever continual frustration at the inability of people to simply be normal in space, more on Dave, Charlie's former (and sketchy) employer, Immortal Hellraiser BS, Victory through OSHA violations, Long Recapping of DC' Comics Legion Lost, is this the first time Miles has done his Werner Herzog impression? Charlie mentions the roleplaying game ‘Mothership' about ten times throughout the episode, did Charlie like it? Would Star Trek Phase II have been like this? UFO, Miles recorded the second part of the Breakfast in the Ruins episode of ‘The Coming of the Terraphiles' and GUESS WHAT It's going to be a Three Parter!

In September 1999, John Koenig reports to Earth's Space Research Center at Moonbase Alpha as its new commander. A strange sickness is killing some of the Moonbase Alpha crew. Commander Koenig's investigation reveals that the source lies at Nuclear Waste Disposal Area 1 caused by excessive magnetic energy fields. The continuous buildup of energy shortly causes massive explosion clusters that knock the moon off orbit into deep space.

Death's Other Dominion. Season 1, Episode 5. First broadcast Thursday 2 October 1975. This month, we're faced with an alarming metaphysical choice: eternal life among a bunch of absurdly hot models in Hugh Hefner's second least favourite Swiss chalet, or a normal lifespan cleaning up the corridors of Moonbase Alpha after its latest nuclear catastrophe. Victor, Helena, Bob and Alan all want to make the obviously correct (if basic) choice, but their fun is inevitably spoiled by miserable old John Koenig and the second law of thermodynamics.

War Games. Season 1, Episode 4. First broadcast Thursday 25 September 1975. This month's ethereal immortal beings in a surreal Pinewood studio are Isla Blair and Anthony Valentine, who are (reasonably enough) so keen to avoid meeting the crew of Moonbase Alpha that they decide to just kill them all instead. Or do they?

Collision Course. Season 1, Episode 3. First broadcast Thursday 18 September 1975. Moonbase Alpha is on a collision course this week, ineluctably destined to crash into a giant pustulent planet. Or is it? Commander Koenig — overcome by the charms of Queen Margaret Leighton — doesn't think so, and so he turns up to Main Mission in his pyjamas like a Moonie and threatens to gun down anyone who attempts to prevent the collision, including, upsettingly, our own Barbara. But — inevitably — it all turns out for the best, and we end our second episode in a row staring out the window contemplating the metaphysical metamorphosis we have wrought.

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 28th 2021 We welcome back WARREN CUMMINGS who has moved from his usual VISION ON SOUND comfort zone to move across into the realms of science-fiction, and has joined me to discuss Gerry Anderson's popular live-action series called UFO which was, and is, a television favourite we both share, and which graced our screens with a vision of the future over fifty years ago, involving the groovy future fashions of 1980, purple wigs, sexism, beautiful production design, production problems, and the various star-studded adventures of yet another Gerry Anderson Organisation With An Acronym which were about as far removed from Captain Scarlet as you can possibly imagine and, ultimately, would lead to the world of Moonbase Alpha and SPACE: 1999. It's a much-loved series, which, despite any intruding flippancy you may have detected, I think comes across in our chat, and I hope that you all enjoy it. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

The crew of Moonbase Alpha can only guess at the resultant devastation left behind on Earth. They must decide how best they can survive. Some Alphans find it difficult to let go of the notion of returning to Earth, others are facing the reality that they must find another home to ensure the survival of the human race. They can't survive on Alpha indefinitely. 1.1 The Siren Call by Andrew Smith The people of Moonbase Alpha are recovering from the shock of their base and their Moon having been blasted through a wormhole in space. But now they are far from home with little hope of a return to Earth. Ahead of them is the planet Meta, whose signal somehow caused this catastrophe. Could this be their new home or does yet more danger lie ahead? 1.2 Death's Other Dominion by Roland Moore (adapted from the original teleplay by Anthony Terpiloff and Elizabeth Barrows) A voice calls to the Alphans from a mysterious, snowbound planet. Can it be possible that humans from Earth have really colonised this remote world? When Commander Koenig and his team investigate, they discover the planet Nival holds many terrible secrets. 1.3 Goldilocks by Andrew Smith   Not too hot, not too cold. The perfect planet on which life can thrive. But not all forms of life that thrive in the Goldilocks zone are peaceful. Investigating this lush paradise, the Alphans must battle an ancient terror for survival.   Based on the original tv series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. But, by a whisker, funding was granted for a base on the Moon. Greatly expanded, it became the international Moonbase Alpha we know today. 311 personnel serve in a perfect, self-sustaining, artificial environment - their mission statement: ‘to forward the frontiers of human knowledge and science’. Dateline: 13th September 1999. The interplanetary Meta Probe is due to be launched from a platform orbiting the Moon. What could possibly go wrong?

NASA is planning on sending people back to the moon and are starting to plan missions in advance with an eye to researching developments for future exploration. That’s right folks, it may not be 1999 but Moonbase Alpha is finally looking at becoming a reality. Plus there are going to be new buggies and other equipment being sent to the moon so the Astronauts will have something to play with when they arrive next. Wonder if they will find that hidden base full of Nazis on the dark side of the moon or transformers?Next we look into why Manga sales are taking over the U.S comic sales. Could it be the fact that the subject matter is just so much cooler, fun and broad? Or is it part of some plot to take over the world and they are brain washing us all? Hmmm, if this was an anime episode we would now include a musical interlude. The scene, while our heroes wander the country looking for the answer our work on computers calculating and plotting what is happening. This is when the nutty and bumbling sidekick runs around in circles and makes a mess and eats lots of fried chicken. Jeepers, we are living in an anime, now I want my ramen and feel an overwhelming need to run down the street with my arms flung behind me screaming. Nope, not happening, oh well, such a shame. In response to a request from a listener we have had the Professor look into child safety measures in gaming such as the new Harry Potter Wizards Unite. We have a number of articles linked in the notes that have information that can help parents develop strategies aimed at helping protect their dirt magnets, children or teenage food disposal units. There are some really good points and suggestions in this, but as we aren’t parents we are unable to offer any expert advice. This is a really huge topic and it is something we took extremely seriously. If you have any suggestions please feel free to post them on the page and share with each other. Now, it is that time where we have the usual shout out, remembrances, birthdays, and special events. Be careful of those surprise mechanisms that try to loot you like a politician with eight arms. Take care of yourselves and look out for each other, stay hydrated and we will catch you next time. This Episode - We join the perils of Moonbase Alpha as they find themselves spiraling out of Earth's orbit in Sylvia and Gerry Anderson's, Space 1999 (1975-77). Along the way we wonder how they have so much paper on a treeless moon, try to contact a ghostly moustache, get nostalgic about double glazing adverts, and discover Paul's dislike for newscasters in TV and films. Music from Space 1999 by Barry Gray, outro Funko by Irving Martin & Brian Dee. FINALLY an episode of the Cultures of Energy podcast that is for once totally wholesome and family-friendly and appropriate to listen to with your kids! Cymene and Dominic share their own thoughts about talking to children about climate change. And then (13:51) we welcome an author that will be well known (especially to listeners aged 8-12 and their families), Stuart Gibbs, the author of the very popular FunJungle, Spy School and Moonbase Alpha middle grade series. Stuart has thematized both climate change and animal conservation in his books and we talk to him about how readers have responded to those interventions, about his writing process in general, and why he thinks it’s important for adults to talk to children honestly about our environmental challenges. If you happen to be in the Houston area on April 30th, please check out Stuart’s reading at the Blue Willow Bookstore, deets here: https://www.bluewillowbookshop.com/event/stu-gibbs-0 PS And, as promised, here are some solid online resources for teaching especially younger kids about climate change and climate action: http://climatechangeconnection.org/resources/climate-friendly-schools/resources-for-schools/; https://www.commonsense.org/education/articles/4-free-tools-to-teach-about-climate-change; https://www.earthguardians.org/50simplethings/; https://thinkprogress.org/how-to-talk-to-a-5-year-old-about-climate-change-ef8ec30b1bd1/
