Today, we're on Moonbase Alpha, to look at the peculiar tale, The Last Enemy.

The Testament of Arkadia. Season 1, Episode 23. First broadcast Thursday 12 February 1976. Stranded in a cold and purposeless corner of an indifferent universe, adjacent to the end of everything, the crew of Moonbase Alpha make a discovery which changes the meaning not just of their journey but of their very existence, and which drives this week's Large Hot Italian Guest Star and his posh new girlfriend to make an irrevocable decision.

Miles and Charlie have come down with a case of the ‘too British for Star Trek' and are coping with it the only way they know how, by once more becoming Space Scamps and hopping over to Moonbase Alpha for three more episodes of Space 1999! We've an unintentional theme of guest stars here as ‘Force of Life' gives us a young Ian McShane coming down with a bad case of heat vamperism while ‘Alpha Child' gives us evil children, weird cosmic space incest with Julian Glover (he's been in a lot of stuff) and then finally, ‘Missing Link‘ gives us a guest turn by Peter Cushing in a costume choice slightly more dignified than Christopher Lee back in Space Scamps II and Charlie asks us a terrifying question… why have we not watched any season 2 yet…

  Our adventures at the edges of outer space continue with our look at 1978's Destination: Moonbase Alpha, the first compilation film of Gerry Anderson's landmark British sci-fi TV series. In September 1999, John Koenig reports to Earth's Space Research Center at Moonbase Alpha as its new commander. A strange sickness is killing some of the Moonbase Alpha crew. Commander Koenig's investigation reveals that the source lies at Nuclear Waste Disposal Area 1 caused by excessive magnetic energy fields. The continuous buildup of energy shortly causes massive explosion clusters that knock the moon off orbit into deep space.

Death's Other Dominion. Season 1, Episode 5. First broadcast Thursday 2 October 1975. This month, we're faced with an alarming metaphysical choice: eternal life among a bunch of absurdly hot models in Hugh Hefner's second least favourite Swiss chalet, or a normal lifespan cleaning up the corridors of Moonbase Alpha after its latest nuclear catastrophe. Victor, Helena, Bob and Alan all want to make the obviously correct (if basic) choice, but their fun is inevitably spoiled by miserable old John Koenig and the second law of thermodynamics.

War Games. Season 1, Episode 4. First broadcast Thursday 25 September 1975. This month's ethereal immortal beings in a surreal Pinewood studio are Isla Blair and Anthony Valentine, who are (reasonably enough) so keen to avoid meeting the crew of Moonbase Alpha that they decide to just kill them all instead. Or do they?

Approaching an inhabited planet, the Alphans are suddenly pounced upon by warships. In an unprovoked attack, Moonbase Alpha is devastated by Earth-style Hawk fighters. With 128 dead and Alpha unable to sustain life, Koenig and Helena appeal to the aliens for mercy. The aliens proclaim the Earthmen to be an invading virus, with no right to exist.

Collision Course. Season 1, Episode 3. First broadcast Thursday 18 September 1975. Moonbase Alpha is on a collision course this week, ineluctably destined to crash into a giant pustulent planet. Or is it? Commander Koenig — overcome by the charms of Queen Margaret Leighton — doesn't think so, and so he turns up to Main Mission in his pyjamas like a Moonie and threatens to gun down anyone who attempts to prevent the collision, including, upsettingly, our own Barbara. But — inevitably — it all turns out for the best, and we end our second episode in a row staring out the window contemplating the metaphysical metamorphosis we have wrought.

Actor Nick Tate portrayed Astronaut "Captain Alan Carter" on "Space: 1999", an accomplished pilot and integral member of Moonbase Alpha, as well as a beloved character on the show.   As the people of Moonbase Alpha continue their odyssey through space on their wandering Moon, the long-term influences of their recent alien encounters start to impact upon their course. But first, an infinity of possibilities opens up for them, with terrifying consequences. 3.1 Skull in the Sky by Marc Platt There's a deluge upon the Moon that will change everything forever. The Alphans must adapt and relationships will change. Then, above them, a portent of doom arrives. 3.2 The Godhead Interrogative by Nicholas Briggs Dashka Kano has been working on translating the alien script on Zantor's artefact. She's beginning to make progress when one hundred objects are detected, advancing towards the Moon. Dashka's skills will be tested to the limit by the force of an ancient civilisation. 3.3 Dragon's Domain by Nicholas Briggs Dr Helena Russell relates a tale of hope, terror and tragedy. The Alphans discover a potential means to enact the will of their referendum and return to Earth. But the Ultra mission will be a journey into unimaginable horror. These are dark times on Moonbase Alpha, and along comes an opportunity to return home to Earth. For one of the Alphans, this is the end of their journey… 2.1 Mooncatcher by Marc Platt Strange alien messages are being beamed at Moonbase Alpha. Are they a welcome or a warning? No one can tell.
