Focusing On What Really Matters When you don't have enough time, what's the first thing that gets cut from your schedule? Now, of course, the answer is “it depends.” But I asked this question recently on LinkedIn and got a flood of responses. The most common category was self-care: exercising, sleeping, even eating. Two other big categories were time with others and time to think. Maybe you can relate to these. Left to my own devices, I sure can. But when you think about it, you would never design your life that way, right? Each of those represents areas that are critical to our success. And I'm not just talking about success with our projects or at work. If we're not taking care of ourselves, taking time to think and reflect, and investing in others, it impacts nearly every dimension of life. And it can lead us to hitting a birthday and wondering, how did I get here? If that sounds like a depressing start to this episode, I have good news. I'm joined today by the author of one of my favorite new books. Cassie Holmes joins us to discuss her book Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most. What I expected to be just another time management guide turns out to be a book on happiness that I consider a must-read. Learn more about Cassie and her book at CassieMHolmes.com/. For more episodes related to focusing on what matters most, check out these episodes: Episode 174, with Amy Blankson about her book The Future of Happiness. Episode 136, with Michele Geilen about her book Broadcasting Happiness. Episode 309, with Ashley Whillans about her book Time Smart. These authors are not just writers--they are researchers who make their work accessible and actionable to us all. Thank you for joining me for this episode of The People and Projects Podcast! Permission to Offend Is it possible to be too nice? We have a vigorous discussion around this question in our Essentials of Project Management workshop. There's almost always a resounding response of “Yes! It is possible to be too nice.” That discussion is based on an idea we covered in episode 320 with Greg Githins. Greg says, "Leadership is a practice of kindness, but it's not always a practice of niceness.” Hmmm... We're going to build on that idea in this episode. I'm joined by Rachel Luna. She's the author of a new book entitled Permission to Offend: The Compassionate Guide for Living Unfiltered and Unafraid. Are there times when you feel like you should be speaking up but are afraid to do so? Or when you worry perhaps too much about what other people think? Have you found yourself confounded about why someone reacted the way they did? Stay with us because Rachel will share some insights that you can start putting to work immediately. Learn more about Rachel and her work at RachelLuna.biz. Also, for more on this topic, check out episode 371 with Amanda Ripley and her book High Conflict. It's a great follow-up to this discussion. We all know that certain road. The one that everyone claims no one should drive along at night. There are rumors of haunted houses, witches, zombies, cannibals and cryptids along these roads. And it seems that every state has one or more of them. Most of these lanes are cloaked in darkness and twist and turn dangerously. Many aren't paved. Roads just seem to attract spirits. Is it because of the accidents or the locations dotting the road side? It's most likely a combination of the two. On this episode, we are going to feature some legendary roads. The Moment in Oddity features Sultan Kosen and This Month in History features the premiere of Gone With the Wind. Our topic was suggested by Emilee Duke. Winners Never Quit? It's an overused cliche that winners never quit, and quitters never win. The only problem with that, of course, is that it oversimplifies the reality of the world we live and lead in. So much of what we do as leaders of projects and teams is to make decisions. And could it be our inability to quit a project, a vendor, a tool, or a team member--could it be that even our career is being hindered because we're persisting instead of quitting? In this episode, I'm joined by one of my favorite voices on decision-making. Annie Duke is the author of a new book entitled Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away. You may know of Annie because of her previous books on decision-making, such as Thinking In Bets. In this episode, we're going to discuss something that wasn't elaborated on in her earlier books. We're going to talk about quitting--and, assuming you keep listening--you don't quit--you're going to walk away with some practical ideas that you can start using this week. Accountability on Project Teams In this episode, we're taking on the subject of accountability. And though fostering accountability among our team members is something we'll talk about, you're going to see that developing a culture of personal accountability might have a lot more to do with us than we realize. My guest today is Michael Timms. He's the author of a fantastic leadership book entitled How Leaders Can Inspire Accountability: Three Habits That Make or Break Leaders and Elevate Organizational Performance. In this episode, Michael helps us get a better understanding of what accountability is--and isn't. He explains how looking at accountability through the lens of systems thinking can help us better understand why we're getting the behaviors we're experiencing. Michael shares his litmus test of whether or not someone is a leader. And he introduces us to some habits that, when done well and consistently, can develop transforming levels of impact on you, your team, and your organization's results. In tribal experience, as in American mythology, life originates with the forefather. How often on this program have we mentioned the blasphemous depiction of George Washington seated in glory, riding upon the clouds, flanked by the angelic hosts? In this sense, the Capital Rotunda is a kind of Platonic Fold: an event horizon where the crisp, clean philosophical constructs inside our brains collide with the messy and often painful complexities of the real world. Are you sure that we are different than the other nations? “‘Whose image is this? And whose inscription?'” (Mark 12:16)For all our talk of “universal values,” we like the Romans, worship our tribal patriarchs etched in the stones of our eternal city. Not as pretty as the one in Italy, but the same thing. Thank God, our only Father, and Patriarch, not for Zacharias, but for God's willingness to put his mouth on the lips of Zacharias for our sake as he did with the prophets of old. Much prettier to my Semitic ears than a building with a painting of George, Romulus, or anyone else. Richard and Fr. Welcome to another very special episode of Commander ad Populum. Commander for the people, by the people, for the people. This week, I sit down with Zack Taylor from Commander Social Podcast. We discuss how Magic has helped him with his anxiety at work and when he goes out to social functions. He uses examples of when he's traveled to MagicFests, either to grind the main event, or to jam casual Commander. We compare how he communicates with those at his day job to how he communicates with people he plays Magic with. You already know about gamification, because of flyby rewards systems. LinkedIn prompts us to complete profiles and a big balloon shows 80% complete. But whatever I do I can never actually reach 100% because the more data LinkedIn has the more money they can extract trough advertising. I instead gave the SuperBetter resilience building gamified platform a try as an elixir to this crisis of engagement. Resilience is the ability to stay strong, motivated and optimistic even in the face of difficult obstacles. Dounds good to. The founder Jane McGonigal sees gamification as a means of building collective intelligence to improve the quality of human life and combat social ills. I’m in. I signed up, modified my avatar and I choose a chellenge. I then had to choose a realistic but challenging Epic Win - something that is hard right now and will involve some degree of difficulty to achieve. I typed in “Enjoy Life”. Supper Better then used almost all the available game like mechanics and elements to help. Quests built confidence and optimism by providing practical concrete steps. Future boosts provided incremental rewards. Power-ups provided the strength and energy to achieve quests. I killed bad guys which were the thoughts, habits, and situations I wanted to avoid. I found Allies to encourage my progress. M progress bars which measure my current physical, mental, emotional and social resilience went up and I earned badges. I faced tougher challenges without giving up and my resilience grew further both in my life and on the screen. I relish challenges and have become stronger, happier, and more connected to the positive people I surround myself with. I’m focusing less on outcomes and goals and enjoying the moment and each small victory. Gamification and resilience can work together to help individuals and society achieve hard-earned wins. Can gamification can work in countering the malaise of contemporary society and the crisis of engagement from which the #vanlifers have long suffered?
In the course of running an advertising agency, we have so many great conversations with other agency owners, chief marketing officers, and marketing technology leaders that we thought there would be value in packaging some of those conversations and insights for you. Some quick notes about the format we have in mind: The podcast will consist of interviews and conversations with a wide variety of guests, each of whom will be involved in the marketing, advertising, and branding industry. The episodes will be short, so we won’t be putting out hour-long episodes. Most will be between about 15-20 minutes tops, or about the time of an average commute or treadmill run. We’re still determining the episode frequency and plan to post new conversations often, but are much more interested in making sure they’re valuable and worth your time than just throwing something up to hit an arbitrary date. Lastly, we’d love to hear your guest suggestions. It could be someone you admire or have seen speak at a conference or on another podcast, it may just be a brand that you love, and we’ll find the best person to speak to it, or it may be you (#humblebrag). Ideally, we’re looking for guests that align with the concept of Mighty Roar, which is that you don’t have to be the biggest in your category or have the largest budget to breakthrough and make noise with your marketing. Send your suggestions to us at podcast@mightyroar.com Thanks for listening to our introduction episode and please subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Podcasts to be notified when the first episode goes live. Ideology and the #Vanlife Movement The Wanderlust of #Vanlife (2015) examines the travelling and blogging movement established by Foster Huntington, who quit a Manhattan corporate job to travel full time in Volkswagen. Huntington says, “I felt like I was kind of pissing away my 20’s doing that” and changed to a more authentic way of making a living, documenting his travels on social media. The documentary examines the phenomenon of Huntington and others becoming social media blogging, and Instagram sensations with, sometimes, millions of followers. Hashtag #Vanlife now refers to the subcultural movement of thousands of successful, financially viable Van Life channels, enjoying this youthful, countercultural lifestyle which rejects dominant cultural consumerist ideologies.
