Focusing On What Really Matters When you don't have enough time, what's the first thing that gets cut from your schedule? Now, of course, the answer is “it depends.” But I asked this question recently on LinkedIn and got a flood of responses. The most common category was self-care: exercising, sleeping, even eating. Two other big categories were time with others and time to think. Maybe you can relate to these. Left to my own devices, I sure can. But when you think about it, you would never design your life that way, right? Each of those represents areas that are critical to our success. And I'm not just talking about success with our projects or at work. If we're not taking care of ourselves, taking time to think and reflect, and investing in others, it impacts nearly every dimension of life. And it can lead us to hitting a birthday and wondering, how did I get here? If that sounds like a depressing start to this episode, I have good news. I'm joined today by the author of one of my favorite new books. Cassie Holmes joins us to discuss her book Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most. What we're trying to do is figure out what leads us to the edge of happiness cliff that point at which we have a maximum productivity, maximum happiness without going over the edge - Amy Blankson There is no doubt that technology in the 20th century has brought advances unimaginable in previous eras. In the US gross domestic product per capita quintupled from 1950 to 2016. Things that were once luxuries have become affordable commodities. However, with such advances, computers and all that comes with them, internet, games, email, etc., are now in our pockets, purses or strapped to bodies. They are extensions of ourselves. Tech companies pay big money to UX designers and engineers to create devices and apps that grab and keep your attention. They high want high engagement metrics. They need you to spend time in an app or a video and to come back, over and over. So we all know it impacts our productivity but what about our happiness? What is the impact of a world of screens and notifications on our cognitive behavior and development? What about our relationships? Enter Amy Blankson, my guest on this episode. Amy has become the world’s leading expert on the connection between happiness and technology. Amy is an alum of both Harvard and Yale and has worked with organizations like NASA, Google, the US Army, and the Xprize Foundation to help improve well-being in a Digital Era. Amy states the problem in terms of discernment. “There’s this pain point about technology and happiness with technology specifically draining happiness because people feel overwhelmed. They don’t know what to do with all the information… and how to evaluate what’s actually good for them.” There is now a condition called Nomophobia, as in no-mo(bile) phone-phobia. It’s a fear of being without your smartphone. Seriously, a phobia and 40% of Americans “suffer” from it. One in five young adults admits to using a smartphone during sex. What? Okay, I'll cop to using the phone in the bathroom, so I need help. We are in uncharted territory. Amy says that we absolutely need to look at our relationship with technology very carefully but what she came away with from her research was surprising to me; that time on the screen is not necessarily a bad thing. Time on the screen is not necessarily bad. What is bad is the unintentional non-thoughtful use of the technology - Amy Blankson In fact, she goes further stating that technology can actually increase happiness - IF you use it wisely There’s the rub. Using it wisely On this episode we discuss what she learned writing her new book, The Future of Happiness. Amy talks about how we can mitigate the dispiriting effects tech can have and rather leverage it to increase our happiness. She's done the research and has the data on what you can do in the midst of work / life to harness it to serve your real needs in relation to happiness: social connection, meaning, and well-being. Amy answers LOT of questions I had like... Is there an inverse relationship between personal happiness and tech innovation How should we use Facebook, or should we abandon it? Total Duration 49:26 Download episode 174 Is Tech Making Life Better or Worse? Tech is ruining our life. Or at least that's what plenty of people are suggesting. There's evidence showing that culturally we're more depressed and distracted than ever, and tech has at least some responsibility for that. Yet at the same time tech is providing rich opportunities to grow and learn. So which is it? Is tech making it more difficult to thrive? Or is it helping us thrive? According to Amy Blankson, the answer is both, depending on how you use it--today and in the future. Amy joins us to talk about her new book The Future of Happiness: 5 Modern Strategies for Balancing Productivity and Well-Being in the Digital Era. In Amy's research, she's found that ultimately the most balanced, satisfied, and happy individuals use five key strategies, not just to survive but also to actually thrive in the Digital Era: They stay grounded in the face of distraction. They use technology to know themselves on a deeper level. They know when and how to use technology to train their brains to reach their full potential. They structure their surroundings to create a habitat for happiness. They innovate consciously to enrich the world around them. I look forward to sharing Amy's insights with you in this episode. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is crucial to my mindfulness. Breathing is something that I tend to stop doing in the moment when I get stressed out. I don't even realize that I am getting more and more anxious and intense. Because I'm an anxious person naturally, breath is the absolute most essential key to helping me to get oxygen into my system so that I can think clearly and straightly. It's amazing and super important. AmyBlankson.com/muse Thoughts on Breathing A couple of weeks ago I was at the Wisdom 2.0 conference in San Francisco, and by far the best speaker that I heard at the conference was Jewel, the singer-songwriter. Jewel talked about how when she was younger; she had a lot of family trauma going on in her world. Alcohol, abuse, parents in and out of her life and it led her to being rough and tough and she wound up, at the age of 16, living out of her car for quite some time till her car was stolen. It was one thing after another of awful things happening to this poor girl who didn't have a lot of support in her life at that point. She stumbled upon mindfulness and meditation at that young age as a way to deal with this world around her. She talked about how she found herself in the dressing room one day where she was trying to steal a dress and she was trying to hide it under her clothes by stuffing this dress that she found in a store window. She loved it. She was stuffing it into her jeans pants and trying to put a big jacket on over her outfit because she just felt this was something she couldn't live without, and it would make her world so much happier. It was a lovely white dress that made her feel clean again. As she was doing that, she looked into the mirror, and she realized who she'd become and how it had recreated this cycle of poverty and this systemic violence and thought pattern that she didn't want to have in her life. She said that she felt like she had gotten to that place in her life through mindfulness. Even at that young age there was so much going on in her world; the ability to step back and see herself from the outside really created a different perspective on her life. She talked about how she was that bully. She was the individual who was trying to protect herself from so many things entering her world and encroaching on her own sense of self-efficacy and self-worth that she reacted and responded. I think that really spoke volumes to me about how she was able to come to that place of awareness. I think it's not always such an elevated story. We often hear young people who are going through the bullying process, and you try to steal yourself against the bully. Mindfulness really makes me think about how the bully can transform.

Repurpose Your Career | Career Pivot | Careers for the 2nd Half of Life | Career Change | Baby Boomer

Amy Blankson is Marc’s guest in this episode. Amy has become one of the world’s leading experts on the connection between positive psychology and technology. She is the only person to be named a point of light by two presidents, President George Bush, Sr., and President Bill Clinton, for creating a movement to activate positive cultural change. A sought-after speaker and consultant, Amy has now worked with organizations like Google, NASA, The U.S. Army, and the XPRIZE Foundation, to help foster a sense of well-being in the digital era. Amy received her BA from Harvard, and MBA from Yale School of Management. Most recently she was a featured professor at Oprah’s Happiness course. Amy is the co-author, with Shawn Achor, of award-winning children’s book, Ripple’s Effect, and the mother of three girls who remind her on a daily basis why it’s so important to create a happier future for all. Marc and Amy discuss Amy’s family background in psychology, positive psychology, and happiness, and focus on her new book, The Future of Happiness, 5 Modern Strategies for Balancing Productivity and Well-Being in the Digital Era. They cover several questions about the effects of technology today, near future, and the three personas related to technology. Listen in for tips on making technology a positive tool for good in your life.   Key Takeaways: [3:09] Amy recalls a childhood scuffle, in which her brother, Shawn Achor, to forestall her imminent outraged outburst, convinced her she was a unicorn. By diverting her attention from his injustice, he turned her anger into awe. Amy was raised in a family of psychologists, and is anxious to share what she has learned about happiness. [4:43] Amy starts her book with three questions: Where are we heading? Would we be better off without tech? What will happiness look like? Amy explains why she chose those questions. Her book came out of her experiences with her company, Goodthink, a positive psychology consulting firm. [6:43] When Pandora’s box was opened, evil and pestilence were released, and the one thing left in the bottom of the box was hope. We have some really powerful tools that have been unleashed. Things can be used for bad or for good. As a society, we need to think about how can we use technology to its best and highest purposes. [7:55] Technology helps us live longer; it can supply 3D printed organs to replace failing ones. Children born without a hand can have a 3D printed one within a week for under $30.00. Technology helps us manage our finances, and frees us up for more quality family time. [8:19] We also have technology that is so distracting that the human attention span has dropped below that of a goldfish, to under 8 seconds. What do we do about that now, to change the trajectory for the future, so our technology is not distracting but propels us forward? [10:02] Research shows that happiness and technology can be balanced. Technology is only a means to the end. We have to train the operators to use things better. Amy refers to the when, where, why, and how of using technology. It depends on intentionality. [11:05] Are you using technology to connect, or to journal, or are you using it to check out, so you don’t have to talk to your spouse? Start your day by writing down your tech intention. You are 42% more likely to achieve your written goals. Be accountable to your intentions. The technology will not do that for you. [13:04] What about solitaire on your iPad! Check your time. Don’t fall off the “happiness cliff.” Games can turn from a diversion into a fixation. Some games and puzzles, like Sudoku, can help prevent dementia. [15:49] Who are the embracers, the accepters, and the resisters? Amy says that people define themselves by their attitude toward technology. When you embrace your persona, you can set your course how you will make technology work for you. You may like some technology, such as medical equipment, but not smart phones. [18:34] Amy is doing some original research around the connection between your tech persona, and some of the stressors that you feel. What does she find about resisters and stress? To reduce stress, try to see technology more as a challenge than a threat. [19:47] Tunnel vision and confirmation bias can lead you astray, when you are first introduced to a new technology. Amy says a positive and engaged brain activates dopamine in your system, and activates the learning centers in your brain, which enables you to see new possibilities. Keep an open mind, and it will be easier to use. [21:30] Tech is not a toxin, it is a tool we need to learn to wield effectively. Research shows that a tech detox does not bring happiness. If you keep setting happiness at the end of an event, you eventually push it over the cognitive horizon. Approach technology with happiness and a growth mindset, and that will mold how you use the technology. [24:11] Amy discusses the positive use of Fitbit and other wellness tools, and relates them to her father’s medical concerns. Technology can be used as tools for happiness for years to come. They will become more user-friendly in years to come.   Mentioned in This Episode: Careerpivot.com Contact Marc, and ask questions at: Careerpivot.com/contact-me Twitter: @AmyBlankson GoodthinkInc.com FutureofHappiness.com FutureofHappiness.com/story The Future of Happiness: 5 Modern Strategies for Balancing Productivity and Well-Being in the Digital Era, by Amy Blankson Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for the Second Half of Life, by Marc Miller and Susan Lahey (April 17, 2017)   Please take a moment — go to iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play. The question is not whether technology is good or bad for us. I think that might have been the question a few years ago. But now technology is part of our lives, so I think the better question is what do we do with it? As William Shakespeare once said, “there's nothing good or bad, but thinking it makes it so.” I think positive psychology has some really important lessons for us and what that means in terms of how we use technology, specifically what I call the how, what, where, and why of using technology in our lives. – Amy Blankson Amy Blankson is the only person to be named a Point of Light by two Presidents (President Bush and President Clinton).
