That warning that Gelmir and Arminas delivered to Nargothrond from Ulmo unfortunately did not sway Turin in the slightest. So this episode WE GO TO BATTLE! In this episode, we dive back into Unfinished Tales and continue the tragic journey of The Children of Húrin! This time, we cross paths once again with some familiar Elves—Gelmir and Arminas—who are back and bearing an urgent message from none other than Ulmo himself. We talk about the weight of this message, why it matters, and what it means for Túrin and the fate of Nargothrond. The folk of Nargothrond finally come to their senses about the Sons of Fëanor, while Beren decides it's time to part ways with Lúthien, in this week's reading from The Lay of Leithian. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Húrin encounters Mîm in Nargothrond and slays him. As he journeys eastward, he is taken to King Thingol. He casts the Nauglamír, Necklace of Dwarves at Thingol's feet and berates him for the loss of his wife and children. Melian attempts to reason with him, assuring him that Túrin, Morwen, and Nienor were welcomed with honor in Doriath. Due to the power of the Girdle of Melian, Húrin at last sees how Morgoth twisted the truth. 01:09 Cameron reads pages 230-233 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 13:57 Summary 15:22 Discussion "Long was their labour; and Thingol went down alone to their deep smithies, and sat ever among them as they worked. Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss Oriana's choice of topic: the Noldor. Also termed the Deep-elves and, in early versions of the legendarium, the Gnomes – thankfully changed given unavoidable associations – they were one of the three ethnicities of the Eldar in general, the first Children of Iluvatar. As compared to the serene Vanyar and the many generally lower-key societies of the Teleri, the Noldor were the ones most driven by the desire to create and to learn about the world in general, though these tendencies, exacerbated by Melkor in his Valinorean captivity and the internal family strife of their royal house, resulted in all the many deeds of fame in Middle-earth on the one hand but also their near total destruction and eventual fading away on the other. By the time of The Lord of the Rings, only small societies and remnants were left, casting an influence on the course of events but not directing them. What can we learn from the stories of the women of the Noldor in particular, not just Galadriel but other figures such as Fëanor's mother Míriel and his wife Nerdanel or the Nargothrond princess Finduilas? What throughlines did Tolkien suggest in terms of how the Noldor both seemed the most human of the Elves as well as being driven by the same ambiguous creative impulses that haunted any number of beings in the legendarium? How does the decision to keep them from the center of the many arcs of The Lord of the Rings help shape the book into being the story that it is? And just how much of an obsessive creative type do you have to be to not only devise the writing system for your culture but to insist on sticking to a particular pronunciation because you're still mad about how things ended up with your family?Show Notes.Jared's doodle. Túrin is welcomed by Orodreth, and he wins renown. Finduilas' heart is turned to Túrin. Gwindor warns Finduilas of his doom and the curse of Morgoth against the children of Húrin. Orodreth takes Túrin as a counselor, and Nargothrond flourishes and grows in might. Morwen and Nienor at last flee to Doriath, but find that Túrin is gone. Orodreth receives a message from Ulmo that peril draws near Nargothrond, but Túrin in his pride does not heed this warning. 01:51 Dan reads pages 209-215 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 22:25 Summary 24:00 Discussion "And Túrin being under the spell of Glaurung hearkened to his words, and he saw himself as in a mirror misshapen by malice, and loathed that which he saw." Túrin and Beleg, the Helm and the Bow, win acclaim for their heroics. Through this, Morgoth learns the whereabouts of the son of Húrin. Mîm betrays them and leads a band of orcs to Amon Rûdh. The orcs slay many of the men at night and capture Túrin. Mîm realizes that there is a survivor: Beleg. He takes up Anglachel to slay him, but the injured elf fights him back, and Mîm flees. Beleg heals and pursues Túrin's captors. He finds Gwindor, an elf of Nargothrond who was captured in Nirnaeth Arnoediad but escaped through secret tunnels. Gwindor joins Beleg, and they find the orc camp and Túrin tied up. 01:20 Cameron reads pages 205-209 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 17:40 Recap 19:09 Discussion "When all in the camp were sleeping Beleg took his bow, and in the darkness shot the wolf-sentinels, one by one and silently. Then in great peril they entered in, and the found Turin fetter hand and foot and ties to a withered tree; and all about him knives that had been cast at him were embedded in the trunk, and he was senseless in a sleep of great weariness." Beren journeys into Nargothrond and tells Felagund his story. Felagund sees that the Oath of Fëanor is again at work. And the Doom of Mandos survives. Felagund decides to depart with Beren to attempt to steal back the Silmarils. The two of them and several trusted companions disguise themselves as orcs and come to Tol-in-Gaurhoth, Sauron's outpost. He battles Felagund in song, and overcomes him, taking Beren and the others captive. Lúthien leaves Doriath, hoping to save Beren from his distress. She is found by Huan, the wolfhound of Celegorm. The sons of Fëanor trick her into returning to Nargothrond and hold her captive there. She befriends Huan, and he helps her escape. 01:02 Cameron reads pages 168-174 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 21:46 Recap 22:55 Discussion "In the time when Sauron cast Beren into the pit a weight of horror came upon Lúthien's heart; and going to Melian for counsel she learned that Beren lay in the dungeons of Tol-in-Gaurhoth without hope of rescue. Then Lúthien, perceiving that no help would come from any other on earth, resolved to fly from Doriath and come herself to him; but she sought the aid of Daeron, and he betrayed her purpose because he would not deprive Lúthien of the lights of heaven, lest she fail and fade, and yet would restrain her, he caused a house to be built from which she should not escape." Finrod Felagund meets the first men. He wins them with his beautiful music and his wisdom, and the men take him for their lord. Even to Bëor, chieftain of the men, man's history is opaque. Men too have been sundered, and there exist various groups with distinct languages. The Green Elves do not welcome men, and Thingol forbids them from entering Doriath. Men spread throughout Beleriand, dwelling amongst the Noldor. Bëor joins Felagund in Nargothrond. Some men become discontent with their partnership with the Elves. But one rises to speak. Who is it? While we're away on vacation, we've prepared another special edition of WLPRPG - the show where we play roleplaying games based on the fictional worlds our podcast dissects! This week we're playing a Tolkien-themed game of Dungeon World, with Joanna as game master and Ryan as Raechil the trust-fund Elf. In part 1 of 2, Raechil is summoned to the Elvish city of Nargothrond to defend its inhabitants from the dragon Glaurung. This would be easier if the leadership of Nargothrond wasn't stupid. Really, really stupid... Dungeon World resources and rulebook - http://dungeonworldsrd.com
We conclude our trilogy of episodes on Chapter 21 of The Silmarillion, "Of Túrin Turambar." After Glaurung sacks Nargothrond, Morwen pulls a Thingol and ignores Melian's advice. She leaves Doriath, Nienor secretly follows, and the dragon ensnares another child of Húrin. We witness a fateful reunion of brother and sister, and the final showdown between hero and dragon. We close the sad tale with a discussion of fate, free will, pity and mean, mean pride in a marathon podcast that challenges popular opinions about Tolkien's tragic hero... and the stamina of your hosts.
We continue our trilogy of episodes on Chapter 21 of The Silmarillion and Tolkien’s tragic hero Túrin Turambar. Túrin comes to Nargothrond with Gwindor, then quickly surpasses his friend in the favor of the king and the love of the king’s daughter. Túrin’s military advice brings early victory, but his deeds soon draw the attention of Morgoth, who responds with a massive army led by the dragon Glaurung. We begin examining Túrin’s choices, tally up his many name changes, and earn the wrath of Hugo Weaving fans everywhere.
Alan and Shawn begin yet another trilogy of episodes — this time on The Silmarillion Chapter 21, “Of Túrin Turambar.” The son of Húrin of Dor-lómin is fostered by the King of Doriath, but an awkward dinner party drives him to a life among outlaws. Fleeing from his own fate, he manages to bring disaster wherever he goes, and he’s headed to Nargothrond next. We give an overview of the history of the story Tolkien called the “germ” of his mythology and — surprise! — we quote Monty Python.
Caught up in an orcstasy of hobbit-love, the Scrolls team talked so long into the night that an entire section of Chapter 8 had to be cut for fear of Melting Your Brains. Well... it's too late now, obviously, so as Scrolls is taking a short break this month we thought we would share the last of our late night ramblings with you. This then, is the Previously Unreleased third part of our Middle Earth Special in which we talk Adaptations - games, plays, movies, music and models. Not only that, ladies and gentlemen but we have Additional Bonus Content excavated for you from the dusty archives of Nargothrond. Shortly after the inaugural Festival-In-The-Shire event last year Clover nabbed a skype chat with one of the guests, Professor Corey Olsen. Wary of overburdening you with Tolkienalia at the time, it was eventually decided to shelve this interview - but now you can hear it in its entirety. Tune in and let the Tolkien Professor fix your melted brains. If you like what you hear you can download his podcasts free of charge here.Intro/Outro music is, as ever provided by Steadman. I have also used a snippet from Howard Shore's wonderful soundtrack to The Return Of The King in order to seperate the two sections of the podcast
