The gang manages to wrangle their way into the lowest of the lower echelons of the Killraven Crime League, and are hired to venture into the Dungeon in search of a gilded human skull. Sounds perfectly legit. What could go wrong? We continue our play of Monte Cook Games' Ptolus city setting, using the Dungeon World ruleset.

What if I told you your tabletop RPG doesn't need skills… or stats… or even weapon proficiencies? Today we commit a little RPG heresy—and ungovern the cylinder. The Jaunty Mantis returns with another episode of chaotic brilliance, high-level RPG design debate, and extremely questionable metaphors. Today, Jesse and Matty tackle a deceptively simple question: Do tabletop RPGs actually need their core features? Ability scores, skill systems, weapon proficiencies—are they essential, or are they just D&D legacy baggage we keep carrying around? Along the way we detour into Rifts (of course), Pendragon, Cypher System, Dungeon World, and a whole lot of “players will self-regulate anyway,” plus Cad Bane impressions, Star Wars hot takes, and an alarming amount of content centered around “ungoverning the cylinder.” If you're a curious gamer, game designer, TTRPG theorist, or someone who just likes watching nerds lovingly complain about Palladium Books, you're in the right place. Send us your questions at jauntymantis@gmail.com Like, subscribe, and forcibly ungovern your cylinder responsibly.
In this week's episode, we chat with Garrett about highly effective cult leaders, a curse of potential unkillability, and a table of players that rotates GMing duties (and systems!) for each campaign. This was a really thoughtful conversation about short game sessions, building shared ownership of the world, and what it means to be a GM. Plus, three of the other members of Garrett's table shared their perspectives with us as well! Garrett has a wealth of knowledge about TTRPG systems. Here are some of the systems that Garrett mentions in this episode:Swords Without MasterArs MagicaNitrate CityMasksMonster of the WeekSpire: The City Must FallDungeon World, which we heard about from PrimBlades in the DarkBoondock CartomancyLasers and Feelings, of which we played a very fun hack called Radical Catgirl AnarchyKids on BikesWe hear about a LARP gone wrong in this episode. To hear about LARP gone right, check out our interviews with Andrew (who told us about Legacies LARP) and Rex (who told us about Gothic LARP). Garrett also publishes TTRPGs! Check out Garrett's Itch page for some fun creative GMless games, and also this (now-closed) Kickstarter for another system now under development. We also hear from some other members of the table! They're also extremely knowledgeable about TTRPG systems:Jason mentions Monster Hearts, Dungeon World, Questlandia, Girl by Moonlight, and City Planning Department. Jared mentions Always/Never/Now and Blister Critters. Jared publishes TTRPGs too! Check out Jared's Itch page for solo journalling games, micro games, and missions for The Company.Chris mentions Uranium Chef and Alas for the Awful Sea.A special thanks to Jason, Jared, and Chris for taking the time to share their experiences! We're very grateful to all of you for seeing a surprise email from a stranger about your home TTRPG game and still taking the time to record some audio for us. We reached out to all of the Bucket Buddies, but didn't hear back from the rest by release time. (Also, we checked out City Planning Department after we heard about it from Jason. We liked it so much that we'll be playing it in a episode later this season with a special guest! This one's a conversation with Joe, the host of the Dekahedron podcast where he talks about his love of the tabletop RPG hobby. On his show Joe talks about a range of stuff from OSR gameplay ideas through to newer (?) games like Fudge and Dungeon World.Joe's renowned for his honesty in RPG reviews and it's that which triggered an invitation to the show. He recently did a couple of episodes reviewing Fudge (1995) and so I invited him on to explore it a little more.Big thanks to Joe for taking the time to talk Fudge. This one's a conversation with Joe, the host of the Dekahedron podcast where he talks about his love of the tabletop RPG hobby. The Fools confront the Governor, but no, they don't. Next, they raid the kitchen and then head to the library, where they find the punniest calendar and a secret. As they continue, they find and confront the Governor, and yes, they do. Then, after some rest, the Second Breakfast Club sets out on a perilous journey sans food.Support us on Patreon at www.patreon.com/CreativeTypo and get additional content at www.afoolsquest.com Cast: Mike Cole = Uorag - Druid Furbolg Shifter. The Second Breakfast Club finds themselves in the Evocation nation—in a not so ideal fashion. In true illusionist form, Eddie makes a scene. The Evokers are kind enough to heal the group, though the healing seems suspect. After getting some pushback from the governor, the Fools settle in at the tavern to collect information and propagandize. After getting an interesting tip on Alayna the group sends Weaslerag to investigate. The Fools find themselves facing off against an earth elemental. The group—minus some goblins—move on and take on the riddle of the Way of Hotesh. The Fools make Camp with the goblins and Eddie, in true illusionist fashion, gives a big reveal. Bill quickly finds himself in a cutthroat situation. Adira gets a crossbow. The goblins are made an offer they can't refuse, and the Uorag finds himself on the wrong side of a Gelatinous Ooze. After dealing with the oversized Jello the Second Breakfast Club finds a cavern. Surprising literally no one, the cavern is ominous. The Fools make it back to Newcity, carefully, because Balrogs. Eddie pays Uncle Fredrick a visit in his sleep. After a night's rest, the Second Breakfast Club sets out and promptly stumbles upon some evokers. After a lot of preparation, they use none of it. The Fools shadow walk to the island looking for the House of Embers and find themselves at the beach. Everybody has matching towels. Somebody went under a dock, and there they saw a rock. It wasn't a rock. It was a rock lobster. Support us on Patreon at www.patreon.com/CreativeTypo and get additional content at www.afoolsquest.com Cast: Mike Cole = Uorag - Druid Furbolg Shifter. The Fools spend the night at Alex Furrington, except for Adira, who is otherwise entangled. When they wake up, Eddie shadow walks them to Newcity, where they give the dean a clear and concise report of their activities since leaving the school. They then head to the library to learn how to get to the house at the Lake of Fire. After a bit more planning, Eddie shadow walks the group to the Lake of Fire. The Fools magically make their way to catch up with Kilo or to make Kilo catch up with them. They find Kilo and his bound lady at an adult show. After confronting Loki about his identity, the Second Breakfast Club remains somewhat unconvinced by his reasoning and engages in covert God betrayal. They proceed to plan a rescue mission. Life sure keeps changing, eh? Here's our latest scheduling update. TL;DR: Ned's life is getting busier, so we'll be switching from releasing weekly to releasing every other week for the foreseeable future. No changes will be made to the Patreon reward offerings. Starting sometime this spring, two new longform campaigns will be releasing! Here on the public feed, we'll be reviving The Tension Builders using the Bump in the Dark system, which reimagines the classic Monster of the Week RPG using the Forged in the Dark framework. And on the Patreon feed, the cast will be hearkening back to our home gaming roots with a Dungeon World campaign centered around themes of Vikings and Norse Mythology. Thanks for coming along for the ride, everybody! Much love and stuff. • • • Patreon: patreon.com/improvtabletop Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / TikTok: @ImprovTabletop Email: ImprovTabletop@gmail.com Donations: ko-fi.com/improvtabletop • • • Audio Credits Improv Tabletop's theme song is “Melodic Marauder”, written by Scott Villanueva, and performed by Scott Villanueva and Ned Wilcock.

Let's celebrate the holidays with a little Christmas-themed fantasy adventure, shall we?
