This week's EYE ON NPI is an EYE ON A PI - it's the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-compute-module-5), the latest update to the easily embeddable mini modules that make industrial developers happy by giving them all the power of a Pi 5 in a ready-to-go pluggable solution. The Raspberry Pi computer launched with the goal of bringing low cost computing to the education market (https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/rorycellanjones/2011/05/a_15_computer_to_inspire_young.html) and through the Pi Foundation (https://www.raspberrypi.org/) they still have that charitable goal (https://static.raspberrypi.org/files/about/RaspberryPiFoundationStrategy2025.pdf) while also spinning off the manufacturing/sales company into the Trading Company which went public this year (https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/what-would-an-ipo-mean-for-the-raspberry-pi-foundation/). The first few Raspberry Pi computers were 'all in one' style (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1344), with power, GPIO, Video and Audio output, USB, Ethernet, and Micro SD card storage (https://raspi.tv/2018/new-raspberry-pi-family-photo-including-pi3a-plus-zero-wh). Eventually enough folks asked for an enclosure-friendly version that would allow an "I/O" board to be designed with the ports in a different arrangement - the big-sized-Pis have them arrayed over 3 sides. To solve this conundrum, and to satisfy the growing industrial/commercial market, the Pi engineers designed the Compute Module 1 which is still available (https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/compute-module-1/). This clever SODIMM packaged board has all the GPIO and peripheral pins on a plug-in connector so you can slot it into an existing design securely and easily - SODIMM sockets (https://www.digikey.com/short/rz9cdjrn) come both vertical and horizontal. This was later updated to the CM3 and CM3+ (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0149/9866293) which was on par with the Pi 3 instead of the Pi 1, with significantly higher computational power. However, perhaps because they wanted a more compact module, or to support high-frequency signals better, the next generation of Compute Module 4's (https://www.digikey.com/short/wffzdn0b) came in a flat rectangular shape with dual 100-pin Hirose contacts. (https://www.digikey.com/short/5m8djf0t) Another nice thing that happened with the CM4 is it became available in dozens of configurations: 1/2/4/8 GB RAM, SD or 8/16/32GB MMC, and with or without WiFi/BLE/BT. This allowed commercial users to go with the 'lowest cost option' needed to fulfill their requirements - whereas the Pi 4 comes in only 3 or 4 RAM options (https://www.digikey.com/short/4pn5vw24). The ready-to-go software - no kernel compiling or OpenWRT configuration required! Long-term hardware support and low prices pushed the CM4 into more and more designs. Which brings us to the NPI of the week, the Compute Module 5 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-compute-module-5)! The CM5 is a big upgrade, with quad A76s at 2.4GHz for a 2x computing upgrade, increased RAM options of up to 16G, increased MMC option of 64GB, USB 3.0 ports, PCIe and RP1 hardware interfacing with PIO support (https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/piolib-a-userspace-library-for-pio-control/). If you have an existing CM4 design, you can easily upgrade or update to the new hotness. If you're new to integrating Raspberry pi, then while you may think of the Pi as a hobby/school computer, that isn't necessarily true anymore with 72% of Pi computers sold going into commercial/industrial use (https://investors.raspberrypi.com/ipo/documents/1). That means you can be confident that you'll get consistent pricing and availability for a long time so that you can work on designing the rest of your product for the CM series to plug into. And like the CM4, the CM5 is available in a variety of configurations and prices, from $45 to $135. Buying Cheap Computers Hi. I'm Moss Bliss. You may have heard me on mintCast, Distrohoppers' Digest, or Full Circle Weekly News. I keep hearing people complain that they can't find a decent computer under $2,000. My response is: lower your expectations, and help end digital waste. Do you really need a top-end gaming machine? Most games will run on older computers just fine. And there are LOTS of 2016 models (and a few newer years) coming off office leases. My suggestion is the Lenovo ThinkCentre M700 Tiny; I will have other suggestions later in the podcast, but this is what I went with an have personal experience. The M700 Tiny is a box about the size of an older external DVD drive, with your choice of an i3, i5 or i7 processor, up to 64 Gb RAM, and a power supply sipping away at up to 35 watts. If you go on eBay or your local equivalent, you can find these for ridiculously low prices. My recommendation is to go for a box with an i5, 8 or 16 Gb RAM, with or without a drive. You can find them even cheaper if you search for "no OS", which frequently still includes the drive, but SSDs are quite cheap these days so it hardly matters. I recommend the i5 rather than the i7 because, in the 2016 models, the i7 wasn't much more than a heat producer compared to the i5 but no faster, and the i5-based machines are often $100-150 cheaper. Of course I recommend putting the Linux of your choice on these machines when you get it. You will need a monitor and keyboard for this. If you don't already have one, I would suggest looking locally for a used 26" LCD/LED TV. You will also want a cable for it, and you can either get a DisplayPort cable while you're at eBay, or a DP-to-HDMI adapter to use the HDMI cable which probably comes with the TV. For a keyboard, you should go to your local big box store and get one you like, if you don't want to buy used. You can find them from $5 to $20. I apologize for my US-centric prices, but you should have similar prices in your local currency if you have eBay or something like it. I just did a quick lookup for "M700 Tiny No OS" on eBay, and saw i5 machines which were purported to work from between $80 and $120 with 8 Gb RAM. Be careful to watch for shipping prices, I see a particularly good-looking refurbished model with 16 GB for under $120 -- but the shipping is over $35 from Australia! If you want an AMD chip, you'll need to research the model number... but they do make them, just not as many. If you don't like Lenovo, you can find Dells and HP EliteDesks in the same range. One good thing about the HPs is that they label which generation they are -- G2, G3, G4. Newer generations cost more, but will be more future-proof. There is currently an HP EliteDesk 800 G2 with 8 Gb RAM and No OS on eBay for $50! Again, if you buy a G3 or G4 it will cost more, but be a newer machine as well. These are all 64-bit quad-core computers, some over 3 GHz, with low power demands. Cheap to buy, cheap to use. Any version of Linux will run on them, and if you're desperate you can run Windows 10 on them as well. That should be enough to get you started. If you have questions, write me at bardmoss@pm.me. The reason I found HPR can be traced back to the 1990's when I first heard about Linux and I got interested in Linux. But it was not until ten years ago that I actually started to try Linux for real. A friend was enthusiastic about Linux. Although he did not have a computer himself, he made CD copies of multiple Linux distributions and gave to me. And it happened more than once. At this time I was on macOS on a macMini. But I also had a cheap laptop with Windows 10 for a few programs. That laptop was too cheap with too little memory and soon, despite it was not old, it could not manage to keep Windows updated, it had too little memory even without additional software: 32 GB hard drive and 2 GB RAM. So, this was the driver to install Linux for real. I installed Linux Mint. And the laptop was now usable again, with an updated operating system. My interest in Linux Mint led me to start listen to the pod Mintcast some years ago. One of the hosts of Mintcast was also an HPR correspondent, and in his presentation of himself at every pod episode he told he gave shows at HPR and shared his ID number. Every Mintcast pod episode also had acknowledgements where Mintcast thanked HPR for letting them use the HPR Mumble server. At the end of each year, Mintcast also sends the jingle for the HPR New year show where everyone is welcome to live chat or just listen. I know I have tuned in and listened to the New year show. Eventually I also listened to one or another show in earlier years. When Mintcast this year, 2024, has talked about Hacker Public Radio they have mentioned it was low on episodes and encouraged Mintcast listeners to contribute. It was after this I finally started to become a regular listener to Hacker Public Radio and at the same time recorded my first show. I like HPR for its community based host approach. I like that shows mostly have the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. I like the concept of knowledge and experience sharing. I like that the content is what matters most, the equipment and presentation skills are of less importance. I like the monthly community shows with feedback and review of shows and comments. I like the occasional comments to my shows and my possibility to comment other shows on the website. That is how my journey with Hacker Public Radio started.

We solved the first Mechanistic Interpretability challenge that Stephen Casper posed in EIS VII. We spent the last Alignment Jam hackathon attempting to solve the two challenges presented there, and present our (confirmed) solution to the CNN challenge here. We will present a write-up of our work on the Transformer challenge in a future post.Stefan and Marius submitted an early version of this work at the end of the Hackathon, and Stefan added Intervention and Causal Scrubbing tests to the final write-up. A notebook reproducing all results is provided here (requires no GPU but ~13 GB RAM). The challenges each provide a pre-trained network, and the task is to reverse engineer the network as well as to infer the labeling function used for training. The first challenge network is a MNIST CNN that takes MNIST images and outputs labels. The hints given are that [1] the labels are binary, [2] the test set accuracy is 95.58%, [3] that the (secret) labeling function is simple, and [4] this image: The MNIST network consists of 2 Convolutional layers (Conv -> ReLU -> Dropout -> Pool)x2 2 Fully connected layers (fc1[400,200] -> ReLU -> fc2[200,2]) and we can access the data (torchvision.datasets.MNIST) but not the ground truth labels. Spoilers ahead! Summary of our solution (TL,DR) The inputs are labelled based on similarity with a 1 versus similarity with an inverted 1 ("anti-1"). If the difference is large (either clearly 1 or clearly anti-1) the image is labeled as class 0, otherwise the image is labeled as class 0. Specifically, the template for 1 seems to be is the given hint (clue_image), and the "anti-1" is 1-clue_image. The similarity is measured as the sum over the element-wise product of the image matrices (or equivalently dot product of flattened image arrays).Then the the ~17k most similar images to “1” and ~14k most similar images to “anti 1” are labelled class 1, the remaining ~29k images are labelled class 0. We can also phrase this as a band filter for similarity with (clue_image - 0.5), defining class 0 as where -17305 < (image (clue_image - 0.5)).sum() < -7762.We can observe this internally by looking at the embedding in the 200-neurons space, a PCA decomposition colored by label shows how the model judges this similarity: The model internally implements this via two groups of feature detectors (in the 200-dimensional neuron layer). These are “1-detectors” (detecting clue_image) and “anti-1-detectors” (detecting 1-clue_image). If either group fires sufficiently strongly, the model is classified as class 1, otherwise class 0. This classification has 96.2% overlap with model labels. Since the model itself has only 95.6% accuracy on the test set we think the difference is plausibly due to model error. We test our hypothesis with Causal Scrubbing. Specifically we test our hypothesis that of the 200 neurons there are 48 neurons detecting "1" similarity, 31 neurons detecting "anti-1" similarity, and 121 dead (useless) neurons. We resample-ablate all neurons by replacing each neurons activation with its activation on a different dataset example where our hypothesis predicts it to have a similar activation. Part 1: How we found this solution Since the model prediction depends on the logit (final neuron) difference we can directly say that in the final layer we only care about the logit of label 1 minus the logit of label 0, the logit diff direction. Then, using the [200,2] fc2 weight matrix (biases irrelevant) we can directly translate this logit diff direction into the 200-dim neuron space (by taking the difference of the respective weight vectors). We review the Nokia T10, see more on their website here. Nokia T10 tablet reviewed It will always show the age of the reviewer if they refer to when they last had a Nokia, back in those early, pre-smart, text and calls days. As the hoary old mythology will relate, your Nokia's phone charge lasted for days on end, even a week perhaps, and it didn't matter a whole lot if you dropped it. No broken screens, matt-like finishes, and durability that ensured your Nokia phone lasted you a long long time. Naturally we all know, more or less, what then played out as they were overtaken by other companies and phones which delivered the online experience in a better, larger, more visible screen time way. At the same time there is still a residual sense of many people being positively disposed towards Nokia and what it might be able to offer and deliver this time around. This time around, and with this particular mode, the T10 tablet, the device does a lot of things very well. Before we get to that however its arrival did prompt a series of questions around the question of when is a device a tablet, and when is it a phone. Maybe there is a specific size at which one is X and one is Y, however while this is branded as a tablet it is certainly at the smaller end of the scale. Which, as, we see product size creep on many of the new wave of smart phones. does mean that the Nokia T10 is not much bigger than some of those phones. As you would expect from Nokia, this device is well designed, boots up quickly, and is, this time around, heavily embedded in the Android apps ecosystem. It looks like they are focussed on delivering solid, quality hardware, and not getting drawn into try to offer it's own apps or ecosystem onto you. This probably makes sense and there is a lot to like about the product. One thing perhaps is that, in a similar way to the newer Google Pixels, it is definitely on the slippery side when you hold it. This is perhaps a current penchant for a more ‘gloss-like' feel, rather than a more tactile matt feel. There are reasons why this might be preferred but it can mean that you are always concerned that the device will simply slip out of your hands. The device is very reasonably priced though, at under 200 euros, so it could be a really good choice for younger users, including students and school goers. It would also work well for travel use-case scenarios too, and, at the appealing price that it is, it could well be the right horses for courses choice as an additional device in your armoury. It is great to watch the gradual re-emergence and reinvention of the Nokia product range and this device seems like a well considered and smart (bad pun) addition to their profile in this space. Porovnal jsem MB Pro s 32 GB RAM a M1 Max procesorem se základním MB Air s M2 a 8 GB paměti. Byl to nerovný souboj, přesto dopadl pro M2 ještě hůř, než jsem čekal.

Tailscale is "A secure network that just works with Zero config VPN. Installs on any device in minutes, manages firewall rules for you, and works from anywhere " Tailscale is built around the Wireguard VPN, which runs on almost any platform and is now built into the Linux kernel. You can use the basic product to connect up to 20 devices for nothing. I have it installed on my UNraid server which is running Tailscale inside a Docker container. Setting this up took all of 10 minutes. Next, I installed Tailscale on my Android phone and could use it to view my Emby media server via 4g. As it's a VPN all traffic between your computers is encrypted. There is an experimental MagicDNS that automatically registers DNS names for computers on your network, so you can use URLs that are easy to remember such as "mymediaserver" instead of having to remember its IP address. An additional plus point is that it somehow works on networks using CGNAT (mobile phones and Starlink) so you can access your phone from your computer via a web browser.
