The main purpose of this micro-episode is to give you the details on the much ballyhooed Philadelphia area meet-up of fans of the podcast. The date is this Friday, October 6, 2023. The place will be Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company, 909 Ray Avenue, Croydon, Pennsylvania. The official start-time is 5:00 pm, but if you can't get there so early rest assured that I'll be around until at least 7:30, and certainly as late as the conversation remains fun and interesting. I'll aim to get there at 4:30 or so to check out the room I reserved, which I believe they call “the nook.” I trust many of you will recognize me from my photo on the website or on Twitter or Facebook, but in case not I'll be wearing a red “History Nerd” cap. I also read a short excerpt from Yascha Mounk's new book The Identity Trap: A Story of Ideas and Power in Our Time, which I highly recommend. Mounk explores the philosophical roots of critical theory and the full range of ideas clumsily lumped together as "wokeism," or "the successor ideology." The book is extremely useful for understanding how we arrived at our current identity politics, and is relevant to understanding the "history wars" that have played out over the last four or five years. You can buy it through the link above.

This week the gang goes back in time to an episode we recorded back towards quarantine, where we sat down to enjoy Neshaminy Creek Brewing! While our biggest difficulty was trying to pronounce Neshaminy, we had no difficulty enjoying these delicious beers. We tried a few beers, the Cherry Hibiscus Wheat, Strange Rituals Red IPA and the Shape of Hops to Come Double IPA.https://neshaminycreekbrewing.com/"Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company was founded in 2010 by head brewmaster Jeremy Myers and assistant brewers Rob Jahn and Steve Capelli. It takes its name from the nearby creek of the same name, from which it draws water for its beer. The facility itself, located at 909 Ray Avenue, officially opened on June 1, 2012. In 2013, the Churchville Lager won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival.[5] In 2016, Neshaminy Creek won two bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival for their Vienna Lager and their smoked beer.In 2016, Neshaminy Creek announced the opening of a location and tasting room in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia.[7]The company brews six year-round beers and several seasonal beers, which are distributed to the greater Philadelphia area and New Jersey."Give our episode a listen to see what we think of these beers and give you some information on Neshaminy's origin story! Sicko was an American rock group from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1991. Exceptionally, the three-piece pop-punk group maintained a constant membership for every recording as a band. This line-up was Denny Bartlett (guitar, bass, vocals), Ean Hernandez (guitar, bass, vocals), and Josh Rubin (drums, brother of Aaron Rubin from The Mr. T Experience). Sicko released four full-length albums and five 7" eps as well as a retrospective CD with unreleased and rare material, a released demo and a tour video. They also appeared on approximately fourteen compilations on labels such as Lookout! Records and Liberation Records. They once exchanged covers with Cub. The vast majority of their recorded output was recorded by Kurt Bloch of The Fastbacks and released on Seattle-based punk label eMpTy Records. One EP and the retrospective CD were released on Mutant Pop Records. Three Sicko songs were featured on the Xbox game Project Gotham Racing 2 alongside artists like The Flaming Lips and Princess Superstar. It’s episode 6 already! We’re excited to go solo this episode and recap how the show has been and what we’ve enjoyed so far! We start out by introducing our Brewery today which is Neshaminy Creek Brewing. The brewery resides in Croydon PA and supplies the area with amazing beers, one of which we’ll be trying on the show. The beer is called Highwater Hefeweizen. This is a wheat beer with hints of clove and banana. Gene is the judge on the beer for the show today and he rates it well! After beer we discuss some beer related news and then turn into a completely different direction and discuss a controversy surrounding Castor Semenya. Castor is an olympic sprinter for South Africa and was denied competing by the governing body only to appeal the decision and lose. The controversy is discussed at length and we want to be clear in stating that we’re not medical professionals and have basic knowledge about the issue at hand. We do, however, have opinions about it and we share those with a little help with our medical expert Cara who keeps us on the factual side of the science. In the end we rate the beer and enjoy it all while coming to some conclusions of our own. Thanks to Neshaminy Creek Brewing for the amazing brew! Also thanks to Tavour our amazing sponsor and thanks to Paul Bunyan Fitness for the place to talk! HIGHLIGHTS 2:00 They don’t speak Mexican in Mexico 4:00 Tavour is coming! 88 Fingers Louie is an American band from Chicago which was formed in 1993. They played a style of hardcore punk, melodic hardcore, and punk rock. After disbanding in 1999, guitarist Dan Wleklinski and bassist Joe Principe formed the well-known punk rock band Rise Against. The band reunited in 2009 and has continued playing shows in Chicago, Canada, Belgium, Las Vegas, and Asbury Park. The band held a 20th-anniversary show in 2013. The name comes from a Flintstones gangster who sells dodgy pianos. Fun fact, Denis is a fan of the podcast. Well, I mean he said he liked a few episodes so I’m going to take that as he has the logo tattooed on his chest now. I asked him if he’d like to talk about the days of 88 and how cool Chicago is and he said The Ballet Where did the video for "I’ve Won" go? Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Josie DiCarlo of Barnet Fair, Mike Ski of True Hand Society, Shannon Roche of Crust Vegan Bakery, Mike Barone of Grindcore House, and Rob Jahn and JP Flexner of Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company. This was a panel discussion held at the Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company in Croydon, PA upon their invitation. The discussion was about punks who own and operate businesses. Despite being a terribly noise environment thanks to many individuals present not for the event but to drink and eating loudly amongst themselves, the discussion was still fascinating and well worth your time in listening. While full apologies are issued due to the sound, you’ll still find a thoughtful discussion of how each respective business came to be, what the interviewees brought to their business to make it unique, how the businesses reflect the ethics of punk, operating with a conscience under capitalism, dealing with the city/state and all the regulations that come with running a legit business, the toll making and sustaining a dream project takes on one’s life, and a great deal more. Many thanks go out to the Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company for making this event happen and helping to bring together these inspiring business owning punks. They also make excellent beer.
