On the heels of the announcement last week of a much anticipated new album by indie folk band The Head and the Heart, I'm excited to be able to share the following conversation with the band's Matty Gervais. This is one of your first chances to hear more about their exceptional new collection of tunes, Aperture, the band's sixth LP, which will be out on May 9th. There are already a few beautiful introductory singles online now, including the anthemic "Arrow" and the newly shared album opener, "After The Setting Sun." It was a pleasure to connect over zoom with Matty to talk about the making of Aperture and how it heralds a new chapter of freedom and collaboration for THATH. We also talk about some earlier THATH history, how they have benefited in more recent years from band therapy, and his own personal creative process for this new album. And of course we start by delving into Matty's early life experiences with music, growing up in Seattle during the grunge explosion, falling in love with recording his songs using a boombox technique he heard Dave Grohl describe in an interview, playing in bands with his brother and eventually joining THATH more than a decade ago. You can pre-order or pre-save Aperture, and get tickets for their upcoming shows HERE!Preview:3:30 - 13:00 - Early life experiences with music, learning to play drums, growing up during grunge, going to Bumbershoot with his parents, getting into Posies, Fastbacks, Supersuckers, The Presidents of the United States of America and other local bands13:20 - 21:00 - Writing and recording his own songs using Dave Grohl's boombox technique, developing his sound, playing in various bands leading up to joining THATH21:15 - 31:00 - Observing THATH as a fan, joining the band, adapting to their fame:31:00 - 34:00 - Band therapy and its benefits35:15 - 40:00 - Aperture, how it started and the writing and recording processes that arose from there40:30 - 49:00 - "Forest Bath": Walking through the woods writing melodies and lyrics; the inspiration for “After The Setting Sun”

Two weeks ago, I unveiled my list of the 40 best albums of 2024. To get to that number, though, I considered over 100 different records that came out over those 12 months. Tonight’s episode is devoted to those records that almost made the list. Just like with that show, there’s a lot of my favorite genres, most notably power pop. There’s two fabulous sets of that type of music, but there’s obviously plenty of indie, garage, and good old punk rock. There are plenty of new artists, yet 2024 also saw the revival of quite a few great bands from the past, such as The Dictators, The Chesterfield Kings, and Fastbacks. Next week, I’m looking at putting together a tribute to two great Minneapolis musicians who recently passed away – Slim Dunlap and Beej Chaney. What tracks would you like to hear during this broadcast? For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Apologue Podcast

In 2010, Justin Maurer's band CLOROX GIRLS fell apart and he found himself living in his uncle's attic and working as a dental supply salesman in Long Beach, California. He was inspired after seeing James Carman's band IMAGES play a killer set at notorious longshoreman dive Harold's Place in San Pedro.  Harold's bartenders were known to deal trucker speed from behind the bar as well as brandish a sawed off shotgun if any of their patrons got out of line. Being the diviest of Pacific Avenue's drag of working class dive bars, they allowed locals to throw their own punk shows.  Justin made the pilgrimage across the Vincent Thomas Bridge to check out one of these shows and was blown away by IMAGES, a local band who took equal inspiration from late 70s LA punk as well as poppier UK punk like THE BUZZCOCKS.  The vocal harmonies were great and a particular lefty drummer who played his snare and floortom with his arms crossed - one James Carman - was singing lead vocals and backing vocals and harmonies in a way that caught Justin pleasantly off guard.  A few weeks later Justin bought a round of $1 beers for the IMAGES boys at Fern's, one of Long Beach's diviest on East 4th Street, but before taking their first sip they were chucked out by the doorman because every single member of IMAGES was all under 21.  Justin soon produced a music video for the boys (“Frustration”, directed by Vim Crony), and also asked James if he would be up for joining a new band.   Back in Long Beach, Justin and another new friend Cezar Mora, who had played in local bands THE SWITCHUPS and THE BAD MACHINE, were working on a project called LOS LONG BEACH BOYS, a Beach Boys cover band that sung in Spanish.  They hoped to rake in the big bucks at swap meets and lowrider car shows.  Translating and harmonizing an entire Beach Boys set in Spanish proved to be quite the challenge, and Justin and Cezar decided to write originals instead.   James invited his childhood friend Johnny Reyes to audition on bass at LA DRUGZ' first band practice at his parents' house in Carson.  The guys liked his yellow BUZZCOCKS t-shirt, his sense of humor and his mod hairstyle, so he was in.  They celebrated with homemade pancit and lumpia from James' mom. At practice, James mentioned that the best music was like a drug and the name LA DRUGS was pitched.  They looked it up and it seemed there was already a band called LA DRUGS from Boston. And they sucked. The boys decided to differentiate themselves by spelling it with a Z as an homage to THE PLUGZ.  LA DRUGZ began to gig around the South Bay, Orange County and Los Angeles playing spots like The Redwood, The Continental Room, Harold's, The Observatory, Alex's Bar and Vince Lombardi High School (VLHS). They recorded the OUTSIDE PLACE EP with Kid Kevin of CALIMUCHO  in San Pedro and approached Tim and Mark Janchar at HOVERCRAFT RECORDS in Portland, Oregon about releasing it.  The brothers dug it and said yes!  A westcoast tour was promptly arranged around the release of the record and would take the boys north to Sacramento, Oakland, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.  In Seattle, Kurt Bloch of THE FASTBACKS joined them onstage for a raucous cover of “You're Gonna Miss Me” by 13th Floor Elevators.  The following year of 2015 took the boys out on the road with London's FAT WHITE FAMILY where they kicked off at storied L.A. Venue The Troubadour,  and toured all the way out to  Austin, Texas.  After ripping it up at the final show of their tour at The Chapel in San Francisco, both bands' vans were broken into at the Travel Lodge Motel on Market Street and Valencia where over $20K of gear was stolen along with both bands' suitcases of clothing.  FAT WHITE FAMILY flew back to the UK all wearing LA DRUGZ t-shirts which was the only clean item of clothing each member now owned.  The ALL BURNED DOWN EP was the followup and all things were quiet on the western front UNTIL NOW.   James Carman formed THE REFLECTORS,

Growing up in the Northwest, the Young Fresh Fellows were our Replacements.  Our Big Star.  Our "fill in the blank for the band that never got the due they deserved."  They were an American Band that just played some good time rock 'n roll.  And, Scott McCaughey was the driving force for the band.  He's done alright for himself along the way...being a part of R.E.M. for years, The Minus 5, The Baseball Project.  Scott is a legend.  So, when I had a chance to be self indulgent in discussing both baseball (based on the Baseball Project's latest record) AND "The Men Who Loved Music" with Scott....well...I think you can probably tell that I was super pumped to have the opportunity.   We dig through the stories behind the songs on the album...and relive a little of that time period in the '80s (shout outs to PLU, Amy Grant, The Fastbacks, Dave Niehaus and more).  Even if you're not familiar with Scott or this band, I think you'll enjoy the conversation.  Check out Young Fresh Fellows at:  http://www.youngfreshfellows.net/Check out Minus 5 at:  http://www.minus5.com/Check out The Baseball Project at:  http://baseballproject.net/

He is the president of Mustang Restorations Inc and his family has been in the restoration business since 1980 although his love affair with Mustangs goes back well beyond that. Chris runs the show at Mustang Restoration and is here today to talk shop.Questions answered by “The Doc” and Doug today include:1. Does color changing a classic car really effect its value? 2. I've lost my keys to the car. What can I do? 3. I see you perform quite a few body style changes to Mustangs making hardtop Coupes into Convertibles & Fastbacks. Is this really worth it? 4. I love the way my classic Mustangs looks. Its timeless in style.. But it brakes & steers like an amusement park ride. What can I do to make the car more user friendly without hurting its originality? 5. These old classic's were produced at a time when gasoline had lead in it .. Should I be worried about pouring an additive into my gas tank? 6. New cars today have so much in the way of occupant protection in the way of Air bags & Crumple zones & seat restraints. Should I worry much about the overall safety of my classic Mustang or the other non Mustang classics I have in my garage?7.How to go about decoding the VIN to get as much info from it about your car as possible. As well if there is a way to get a complete build sheet if the one in the car has been lost over time. It's our first show for 2023, and right off the bat we're gonna take a shot at something we haven't done before. After the Atlanta show in 1994, Ed took to the airwaves to DJ a show out of a van. It was such a success that he wanted to do it again, but this time feature live performances from the band as well as some other special guests in between spinning records from his personal favorite bands. This is famously known as Self Pollution Radio. The broadcast took place shortly after the release of Vitalogy at a home that Ed owned in Seattle. He invited all of his friends over, meaning that at least one person from the big four (five if you include Mudhoney) Seattle grunge bands were all in attendance. While Pearl Jam performed some of the best songs off their new record, we also got to hear performances from The Fastbacks, Mudhoney, Soundgarden and the world premiere of Mad Season.  Many of you may remember flipping cassette tapes while listening to this show back in high school or college, so we attempt to bring you back to that moment where you had to stay up late during a 4+ hour broadcast to make sure you recorded the entire thing. We'll talk about the Vote For Choice benefit that happened a few days after this, the Home/Alive compilation record, guests such as Mike Watt and Krist Novosellic and the ramifications of Ed giving out his phone number over a live broadcast. Fugazi, Built To Spill, The Fastbacks ou les Melvins s'y produisent. Exceptionally, the three-piece pop-punk group maintained a constant membership for every recording as a band. This line-up was Denny Bartlett (guitar, bass, vocals), Ean Hernandez (guitar, bass, vocals), and Josh Rubin (drums, brother of Aaron Rubin from The Mr. T Experience). Sicko released four full-length albums and five 7″ eps as well as a retrospective CD with unreleased and rare material, a released demo and a tour video. They also appeared on approximately fourteen compilations on labels such as Lookout! Records and Liberation Records. They once exchanged covers with Cub. The vast majority of their recorded output was recorded by Kurt Bloch of The Fastbacks and released on Seattle-based punk label eMpTy Records. Thank you Jim Dudukovich! In this episode we talk about cool bands and stories, like how our guest sat in on drums with the Circle Jerks in New York because Chuck Biscuits, the drummer, wasn't able to play and our guest knew all their songs.Jack Rabid is the publisher and creative genius behind "The Big Takeover," a bi-annual music magazine published out of New York City, going on 42 years now.  It reads like a music encyclopedia or mix tape guidebook, including 60-80 pages of album reviews written by Jack himself.  Jack's a drummer and vocalist and has played in a number of bands.  And he's a veteran of the “punk era,” emanating from New York City.  But mostly, he's a music lover.  This interview kicks right in, mid conversation, with us talking about Jack's softball game that he just got home from.  I ended up just hitting record, 86'ing the formalities of a “hello,” and rolling tape.  No one talks about music like Jack Rabid.  Here we go…======================== BAND REFERENCES IN THIS EPISODE! ======================== Talking Heads, XTC, Ramones, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Tony Bennett, Sinatra, Xavier Cugat, Death Cab for Cutie, Deep Sea Diver, Wire, Springhouse (Jack's band), Leaving Trains (Jack played with them), Chills, Nirvana, Belly, Velocity Girl, Throwing Muses, REM, Even Worse (Jack's Band), Last Burning Embers (Jack's Band), Beatles, Circle Jerks, Legal Weapon, Saccharin Trust, Naked Ray Gun, Big Black, The Effigies, Blood Sport, Fastbacks, Hüsker Dü, The Screamers, The Dells, Engelbert Humperdinck, Glen Campbell, Dionne Warwick, Jimi Hendrix, Blondie, Television, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Velvet Underground, Mothers of Invention, MC5, The Cars, The Police, Bad Brains, Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye, James Brown, The Who, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Killers, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, The Undertones, X, The Mutants, The Zeros, DOA, The Subhumans, The Dead Kennedys, The Stimulators, Mad, Iggy Pop, the Cramps, Link Wray, Professor Longhair, The Ruts, Sham 69, The Damned, Dead Boys, Buzzcocks, Justin Sullivan, New Model Army, The Neats, Wipers, Catherine Wheel, Radiohead, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Rogers, Gene Autry, Max Romeo, Stooges, Heartbreakers, New York Dolls, The Adverts, The Everly Brothers, Love, Carl Perkins, Oscar Peterson, Hank Williams, Stephen Foster, Blasters, The Undertones, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Howlin' Wolf, Joy Formidable, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Cheetah Chrome, John Lydon, Captain Beefheart, Ruts DC, The Gas, Joe Pernice, Bevis Frond, The Who, The Byrds, Bo Diddley, Ike and Tina Turner, Lesley Gore, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Billy Bragg, Colin Hay, Connie Smith, and George Jones.========================THE BIG TAKEOVER- Website:  https://bigtakeover.com/- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigTakeover/ - Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bigtakeovermag/?hl=en- Radio Show:  https://bigtakeover.com/radio/ ========================BRENTON HUND PODCAST   - Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/brentonhundpodcast- Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/brentonhundpodcast/- YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/========================SOCIAL MEDIA BY:  https://www.socialsweetheart.coLOGO DESIGN BY: https://taylorhembree1993.wixsite.com/ohokmedia

Donate to Seattle Theatre Group at http://stgpresents.org/donate On April 16th Regan Hagar and Stone Gossard, atop their newly rebooted Loosegroove records will offer, for your listening pleasure, the long lost recordings of The Living. A band that played around the NW for about a year in 1982 before it went the way of most bands. It morphed, into something else. Luckily, in that year, the boys would go up to American Music in Fremont WA and lay to tape, what they'd been up to. Had it come out then, that recording would have been the first time the "world" would hear Greg Gilmore on drums, and, at a salty 17 years old, Duff Mckagan, making his debut as an absolute monster of a creative driving force. Seattle Today was lucky enough to have, both Greg, and then Duff come to The Moore Theatre to talk with us about that period in their lives. We were also blessed with a visit from the Mighty Blaine Cook, who would be the singer in the band that both Greg and Duff would follow up The Living with, Ten Minute Warning. Duff Mckagan is a Seattle musician. From 1979-84 after spending time in numerous bands rehearsing and performing around the northwest (including The Fartz and The Fastbacks) the first band in which he was the creative driving force was The Living. A long lost recording of The Living is being released this month on vinyl courtesy of Loosegroove records. Obviously we were beside ourselves that he agreed to come on Seattle Today and talk with us about this formative and foundational period of his artistic trajectory. While it's no secret Duff and Geoff have been pals forever, and played in (the band) Loaded together, it's also no secret Duff is not necessarily fond of doing press, in general, and (what amounts to prolonged torturous press) podcasts, in particular. If was definitely an honor to have him on, and he even took the time to give Steve a much needed bass lesson. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/seattletoday/message

Johnny Ramone, Eddie Vedder and Weird Al walk into a green room….OK, better to let legendary singer Kim Warnick tell this joke herself! The Fastbacks' bassist/vocalist is full of hilarious stories, zingy one-liners and a down-to-earth humility that only comes from flying so close to sun and actually living to tell the tale (in an alternate universe run by record store geeks, perhaps The Fastbacks could have been the next Nirvana). It's a funny story, really: the pioneering Seattle band were always too eccentric, too weird and (as Kim says) maybe that's a good thing! The group of high school buddies (including Lulu Gargiulo: guitar/vocals and genius guitarist/ band leader Kurt Bloch) not only influenced would-be-punks to pick up a guitar, they also got to live out their own teenage fantasies opening up for the likes of the Ramones and Joan Jett. Touring the world (and finally making it to Japan just like her heroes, The Runaways), Kim has tasted every high school garage band's wet dream. Today, we bring it all back to 1979, when Kim was just a kid dreaming about attacking the bass on stage just like Dee Dee. So...what happens when you invite mom and dad into the pogo pit? Did Dr. Frank really ask for an entire series of Encyclopedia Brittanica in his rider? What's all this about Joan Jett's pubes? How the hell did Kurt keep it all together for so many years? All these questions and more are answered (well, sort of) on this here podcast. What a way to rocket into 2021! Support Kim Warnick by picking up her music! Hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman jump right into this On the Move with a close look at one of the Main Attractions headlining the upcoming Mecum Glendale auction: the Steve Todhunter Collection. Matt has his eyes on a Shelby Cobra packing some star power as it was once owned by the late actor Paul Walker. Meanwhile, John is roped into a pair of Ford stallions packing some wild colors. The two 1970 Mustang Boss 429 Fastbacks, one in Grabber Blue and the other Grabber Green, are both equipped with 429 CI V-8 engines and paired to 4-speed transmissions. John dishes on their race-inspired origins including their Kar Kraft connection. Then it’s on to some automotive industry news, with Matt sharing how the merger behind FCA and the PSA Group has been finalized and the new organization Stellantis has been launched. John gives a recap of how Chrysler’s ownership has evolved and changed over the years leading up to this newest development. Then, it’s on to the rollout of a new On the Move feature presented by State Farm and called Surprisingly Great Questions, where Matt and John will answer listener questions, with today's focus on the world of electric vehicles. Matt tackles the assortment of queries ranging from how far an EV can go on a single battery charge and how to find a charging station. In the second segment, Matt is on the line with Matt Berger, fourth-generation owner of the legendary Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Founded in 1926, the family has carried on the tradition of selling American iron, and that rang especially true in the 1960s, when the locale was buzzing with high-performance parts, Corvettes and COPO Camaros. Matt Berger has kept the legacy alive, sharing his early memories of riding in his dad’s many Corvettes and his involvement with his own high-performance programs including the fourth-generation Camaro efforts with speed shop tuner GMMG. The guys then talk about the dealership's effect on the world of car collecting, seen most recently at Mecum’s Muscle Car City auction where two of the high sellers were Camaros that had been sold through the legendary locale. Wrapping up the episode, Matt and John are reporting another On the Move REView, this time recapping hundreds of miles behind the wheel of a 2021 Dodge Charger RT. Both guys like the big, comfy car and certainly the rumble of the exhaust, yet they ponder how much longer the successful magic muscle car formula Dodge has concocted will continue to work.

She's essentially the queen of Seattle punk rock and played bass and sang in Fastbacks from 1979-2001 before joining the amazing Visqueen along with another incredible woman musician, Rachel Flotard. Chris, “The Doc” Ingrassia is back again to answer all of your questions relating to your classic Mustang. His knowledge of the business is second to none. At any given point he will have 20-30 Mustangs in his shop. He is the president of Mustang Restorations Inc and his family has been in the restoration business since 1980 although his love affair with Mustangs goes back well beyond that. Chris runs the show at Mustang Restoration and is here today to talk shop. Questions answered today by “The Doc” and Doug include: Does color changing a classic car really effect its value? I've lost my keys to the car. What can I do? I see you perform quite a few body style changes to Mustangs making hardtop Coupes into Convertibles & Fastbacks. Is this really worth it? I love the way my classic Mustangs looks. Its timeless in style.. But it brakes & steers like an amusement park ride. What can I do to make the car more user friendly without hurting its originality? These old classic's were produced at a time when gasoline had lead in it .. Should I be worried about pouring an additive into my gas tank? New cars today have so much in the way of occupant protection in the way of Air bags & Crumple zones & seat restraints. Should I worry much about the overall safety of my classic Mustang or the other non Mustang classics I have in my garage? How to go about decoding the VIN to get as much info from it about your car as possible. As well if there is a way to get a complete build sheet if the one in the car has been lost over time. Sicko was an American rock group from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1991. Sicko released four full-length albums and five 7" eps as well as a retrospective CD with unreleased and rare material, a released demo and a tour video. One EP and the retrospective CD were released on Mutant Pop Records. Richard Stuverud was born in Seattle Wa. and began playing drums at very early age. As the punk rock movement was underway in the northwest, Richard found himself playing in various bands, one of which was The Fastbacks. A great initiation with all things rock n roll...(like under age partying while opening up for The Ramones!). In 1990, he signed his first record deal with Columbia recording artists War Babies. While the mid 90's unfolded, Richard went on to play with Jeff Ament to form the group Three Fish, which released 2 records on Sony's Epic label in 1996 and 1999. Staying in demand with session work and touring opportunities while working with various producers and songwriters, Richard has toured with artists Gary Allen in support of Rascal Flatts, (with an unknown taylor swift sharing the bill), as well as U.K. artists Paul Newsome and Proud Mary in support of the Police at the Isle of Wight festival. Richard toured with N.Y.C. band White Light Motorcade in support of the Yeah, Yeah,Yeahs at the Redding Festival, and in support of The Donna's across Europe in 2004. Richard has performed on NBC's Late Night With Jimmy Fallon with Tres Mts, which includes members of Pearl Jam and King's X. He also performed with another current band, RNDM on Jimmy Fallon as well as The Conan O'Brian Show, which includes artist extraordinaire Joseph Arthur. Richard has an extensive recording discography and is featured on Pearl Jam's 2011 box set Vitology for the track "Nothing Man". He currently teaches drums to aspiring young drummers, from K to 5th grade with his Little Rhythms Workshop. Richard rock's Ludwig drums and smashes Zildjian cymbals.
