If Kansas Had Trees is a genre blending band comprised of Joey Nardone (vocals, bass), Maddux Testa (vocals, guitar), and Stone Magnana (drums), from eastern PA. Being an emoish type band from Eastern PA and carrying the torch for bands such as Title Fight and Tigers Jaw is no easy task, but IKHT keeps the torch lit and moving with their emotive stylings.  Thanks for listening!!! With members spread across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts, New England quintet Arms Like Roses play a blend of emo, indie rock, and post-hardcore that alternates between lush beauty and cathartic harshness just like the seasons do in the region they call home. With a sound harkening back to the ‘90s and early 2000s influenced by acts like Sunny Day Real Estate, mewithoutYou, Circa Survive, and Tigers Jaw, ALR made their debut in 2021 with the EP “Get Some Sleep”; they followed it up the next year with their Chris Teti (TWIABP)-produced first LP “Blooming”, which saw the band complete several east coast and Midwest tours and receive praise from press outlets like No Echo and The Alternative. Drastically changing up your style as a young, rising band is a risk, but Peripheral Vision teaches us that making a beloved record never really comes down to style as much as it comes down to great songwriting. Turnover went all in on their newfound love of dream pop/post-punk for Peripheral Vision, and they still had the driving backbone and the sappy sincerity of their emo/punk days that made the new album stand out as unique within all of those genres. It quickly became the band's breakthrough record, and it set the tone for the next decade of Turnover's career.   For its 10th anniversary, singer/guitarist Austin Getz joins us on the BrooklynVegan podcast to discuss the making of the album, influences behind it, where the band was at internally and where the scene they were part of was at during this period, and much more.   Turnover will also be performing Peripheral Vision in full on tour (with support from Citizen, Tigers Jaw, Balance & Composure, and others) and releasing an expanded 10th anniversary edition. There's an exclusive BrooklynVegan "candied avocado" vinyl variant, limited to 500 and up for pre-order in the BV shop:   https://shop.brooklynvegan.com/products/turnover-peripheral-vision-10th-anniversary-edition-lp-limited-edition-only-500-made-candied-avocado-vinyl   --   The BrooklynVegan Show is brought to you in part by DistroKid, a service for musicians that allows you to easily upload your music to all major streaming platforms. Revisited: Ethel Cain with Wicca Phase Springs Eternal (2023)

Talkhouse Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2025 44:13

This episode originally aired on September 7, 2023. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of musicians who create with an air of mystery, but who have a fantastically straightforward chat here: Ethel Cain and Adam McIlwee. Ethel Cain is a character created by Hayden Anhedonia, though one that's been sort of all-consuming. Anhedonia began releasing music under the name in 2019, finding her sound and her vibe over the next couple of years before releasing the absolutely epic Preacher's Daughter in May of 2022. The album, a concept collection about the life and ultimate demise of Ethel Cain, skillfully moves through sounds from a sort of Gothic Americana to slowcore to ambient sounds to who knows what, exactly, other than it's thoroughly engaging. The album was pretty quickly hailed as a masterful debut, and Cain found herself not only the darling of the music world, but with some prominent modeling gigs as well. As you'll hear in this chat, though, the spotlight has gotten a little bit bright for her taste lately. She's currently on the European festival circuit, though she'll head back to the States in October for sold-out shows at really interesting venues. Check out “Crush” right here. Cain and today's other guest, Adam McIlwee, go way back. He was an early supporter of her music, and appears on her Inbred EP under his most prominent alias, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. Though he started his musical journey as part of the pop-punkish band Tigers Jaw, he's moved in a dozen other directions since. He founded the emo-rap collective GothBoiClique back in 2012, which briefly counted Lil Peep among its members. As Wicca Phase, though, McIlwee combines synth-pop with more acoustic sounds and more hammering beats, depending on the track. His latest release under the name is self-titled, and it just came out in June. It's well worth checking out. In fact, check out “Moving Without Movement” right here. Now for two people who've created such interesting mystiques, this is a refreshingly down-to-earth conversation in which they talk about trying to carve out space as middle-class musicians who don't expect to conquer the charts with their music—but who'd love to be able to make a decent living at it. They talk about what to do when you hit a touring wall—this chat took place not long after Cain fainted onstage in Australia—and how great Vicks Steam Inhalers are for singers. Hey Vicks, you might have a couple of spokespeople here if you play your cards right. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Hayden Anhedonia aka. Ethel Cain and Adam McIlwee aka. Wicca Phase Springs Eternal for chatting. Tigers Jaw is at a point in their careers where they can schedule a last minute tour and still pack a room when they come to town. That's exactly what happen when their tour with Circa Survive was cancelled back in January. The last time Tigers Jaw toured was back in 2019 so they knew that it was time to hit the road again. After hitting the drawing board, the band decided to piece together The Last Minute Magic tour which took place in February and made its way to California in early March.    I was lucky enough to catch Tigers Jaw in New Jersey and I remember chatting with Brianna about heading to California directly after the show on a 5am flight. The tour life can be demanding at times, but it was a nice feeling for the band to be back on the road and they welcomed that 5am wake up call with open arms. Every night had a lot of energy and the fans were excited to see the band on.    Tigers Jaw put out an album last year called “I Won't Care How You Remember Me.” The band didn't get to do a tour for the album, but it still received a lot of attention. In this Brianna talked about writing songs that she wants to put out and that have meaning at that point of her life. We also discussed a bunch of other topics such as Brianna's creative personality, starting out in Scranton (including their relationship with the Menzingers), her decision to finish college even when the band was getting offered some big tours, Charmer being a turning point, and when she picked up writing responsibilities.
