DR TOM MAY on PLAY FOR TODAYFirst broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on February 23rd 2025.This week I'm joined by another new voice for the show, DOCTOR TOM MAY from NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY who I was put in touch with because he's written his PhD thesis all about the BBC's long running drama series PLAY FOR TODAY which ran throughout the 1970s and well into the early eighties and presented an eclectic mix of so many iconic dramas many of which are still talked about in hushed and awed tones even today.I was very kindly allowed access to read his thesis, and it really is a fascinating and highly detailed piece of work. DOCTOR TOM MAY has done the kind of astonishingly thorough in-depth research that TV archivists adore, and, luckily for us, he is planning on publishing a book based upon this fascinating topic, which should already have you eagerly anticipating being able to get hold of a copy.PLAY FOR TODAY was such an iconic and eclectic series, written by perhaps the most well-known writers of that generation, directed by some of the giants of the art, and starring many of the most iconic actors of its time, that we can probably only touch upon it in the most general terms today, but I hope you'll enjoy our efforts if you stick around for the next hour.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Allen is a Welshman and London Welsh man through and through. Played for Risca all the way through school and then decided to get out of the Wales bubble to further both his academic and rugby education up in Newcastle. This is the time when Newcastle Falcons where at the top of the Premiership with the help of the backing of Sir John Hall's investment and full of International players, like Johnny Wilkinson, Tom May, Doddie Weir and Gary Armstrong. He enjoyed his 5 years there, but was asked to come back to Wales to have a crack at getting in the Wales squad and signed for Celtic Warriors. That didn't work out, so he had 6 months playing for Gordon's in Australia and some time at Henley, where he first encountered playing at London Welsh. He then had a conversation with Adrian and realised he could play top quality rugby at Old Deer Park and begin his career in the city. He played under Adrian, Martin Jones and Danny Wilson before deciding to study for an MBA to further his career. What you hear in this interview, is how deep the friendships Allen made at London Welsh forged by training on Tuesday and Thursday, followed by long bus trips to Cornwall or up North, where you really get to know your team mates. A real pleasure to hear from Allen. Enjoy

Due to the inconsistencies and ambiguities within his work and the scarcity of information about his personal life, Andrew Marvell has been a source of fascination for scholars and readers since his work found recognition in the early decades of the twentieth century. Born on March 31, 1621, Marvell grew up in the Yorkshire town of Hull, England, where his father, Rev. Andrew Marvell, was a lecturer at Holy Trinity Church and master of the Charterhouse. At age twelve Marvell began his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge. Four years later, two of Marvell's poems, one in Latin and one in Greek, were published in an anthology of Cambridge poets. After receiving his bachelor's degree in 1639, Marvell stayed on at Trinity, apparently to complete a master's degree. In 1641, however, his father drowned in the Hull estuary and Marvell abandoned his studies. During the 1640s Marvell traveled extensively on the continent, adding Dutch, French, Spanish, and Italian to his Latin and Greek—missing the English Civil Wars entirely.Marvell spent most of the 1650s working as a tutor, first for Mary Fairfax, daughter of a retired Cromwellian general, then for one of Oliver Cromwell's wards. Scholars believe that Marvell's greatest lyrics were written during this time. In 1657, due to John Milton's efforts on his behalf, Marvell was appointed Milton's Latin secretary, a post Marvell held until his election to Parliament in 1660.A well-known politician, Marvell held office in Cromwell's government and represented Hull to Parliament during the Restoration. His very public position—in a time of tremendous political turmoil and upheaval—almost certainly led Marvell away from publication. No faction escaped Marvell's satirical eye; he criticized and lampooned both the court and Parliament. Indeed, had they been published during his lifetime, many of Marvell's more famous poems—in particular, “Tom May's Death,” an attack on the famous Cromwellian—would have made him rather unpopular with royalists and republicans alike.Marvell used his political status to free Milton, who was jailed during the Restoration, and quite possibly saved the elder poet's life. In the early years of his tenure, Marvell made two extraordinary diplomatic journeys: to Holland (1662–63) and to Russia, Sweden, and Denmark (1663–65). In 1678, after eighteen years in Parliament, Marvell died rather suddenly of a fever. Gossip from the time suggested that the Jesuits (a target of Marvell's satire) had poisoned him. After his death, he was remembered as a fierce and loyal patriot. Now considered one of the greatest poets of the seventeenth century, Marvell published very little of his scathing political satire and complex lyric verse in his lifetime. Although he published a handful of poems in anthologies, a collection of his work did not appear until 1681, three years after his death, when his nephew compiled and found a publisher for Miscellaneous Poems. The circumstances surrounding the publication of the volume aroused some suspicion: a person named “Mary Marvell,” who claimed to be Marvell's wife, wrote the preface to the book. “Mary Marvell” was, in fact, Mary Palmer—Marvell's housekeeper—who posed as Marvell's wife, apparently, in order to keep Marvell's small estate from the creditors of his business partners. Her ruse, of course, merely contributes to the mystery that surrounds the life of this great poet.Andrew Marvell died on August 16, 1678.-bio via Academy of American Poets Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

The Menzingers' albums are storied time capsules. Starting in 2007 with teen angst and rebellion, they've refined and reshaped their narratives into self-reflective numbers that continue to balance melody and might. Their most-recent installment—2023's Some of It Was True—was their eighth chapter that stares down aging with acceptance rather than anger. But don't get it twisted, these rockers will still charge.“This record just feels different for us,” Barnett explains. “It's a really important one in our catalog, and a pivotal moment in our history. We have the liberty of our fans growing with us now, and after writing these lyrical songs about where we are in life, we decided to take other peoples' stories and make something bigger out of it.” “It brought us back to our energetic side as a band,” May concurs. “We got to let loose, which is what drew us to the energy of being in a band in the first place. This is a live band—why shouldn't we record live songs? As a result, we're back to why we started this band in the first place.”In support of Some of It Was True, the Philly crew toured the States and touched down in Nashville mid-November for a romper at the Marathon Music Works. Before their headlining set in Music City, both singing-guitarists Greg Barnett and Tom May welcomed PG's Perry Bean onstage to converse about their setups. Barnett explained the pros and cons of being a left-handed player, while May divulged the inspiration for his loved Les Pauls. Both detailed why they prefer a two-amp rig, and each demoed the various sounds set off from their respective pedalboards.Brought to you by D'Addario:https://ddar.io/wykyk-rrhttps://www.daddario.com/XPNDRR

We thought that we might share it with you and see how you might refine it with us. Tom was inspired to combine the original metacognitive work by our mother Mary May with the new work that I have been doing with Jeremy Johnson on Jean Gebser's book, Ever Present Origin. You can download Tom's matrix from our website at dynamic competence.com under Season 3 podcasts, Session 34 if you want to look at it. At the end of the rows three metacognitive perspectives, Instinctive, Intentional, and Integral are arranged top to bottom. For this podcast, Tom is presenting these structures of consciousness and perspectives from the unique way that he processes this information. Of course, this is only one way of looking at it. Next time, we will dive deeper into what is inside of this matrix. Take a listen and see what you get from it.

This week Tom briefly revisits his theme of local high school dances of yesteryear that featured live bands, give you a preview of some very worldly artists in the lineup for Summerfolk this year and play some tracks to convince you to come out to Electric Eclectics' event at Black Bellows on June 18. In the first camp, tracks from Perth County Conspiracy, Liverpool, Peter Schilling (a German star who scored a hit with english lyrics by Wiarton's David Lodge) and the Forgotten Rebels. To bridge the themes, a 2004 track by Beverley Glenn Copeland, who played OSCVI and the first two Summerfolks. Coming to Summerfolk this year: Cuban powerhouse Okan with a track featuring Rauzzy Ferrer, the world fusion of Moskitto Bar, Anishnabek artist Aysanabee and the amazing Estonian duo Puuluup. Hear a real stunner from South Africa's Abdullah Ibrahim aka Dollar Brand in honour of the Durham Sauntering Band's performance of the track in Owen Sound's Earth Day Parade. Finally, we wrap up with tracks from Debby Friday, Zones and Lee Paradise, who will be on the bill (with a few others) for Electric Eclectic's June 18 shindig.

I've chased this interview for years. The Menzingers are without a doubt one of my favourite bands. Having been a fan for so long, I feel as though I've grown up with them in a way, experiencing the weirdness of being in your 20s in an age where everything seems primed to keep us in a state of suspended adolescence. Their earnest and sincere songwriting won me over from the moment I first heard 'Chamberlain Waits', and I've stayed with them ever since. A lot of their thoughts echoed my own as I drifted through my 20s and into my 30s. It was surprising and wonderful to find out that their new album is a meditation on what it's like to move into your 30s, and I think that's got a lot to do with why 'After the Party' resonates with me so much.Tom is a very nice chap. Let that be said from the outset. Continuing to be humble in the wake of their continued success. In many ways, it feels like The Menzingers have been building up to 'After the Party', and as Tom discusses in the interview, they've looked at each record as the next one towards the perfect Menzingers' record. Perfection is impossible of course, but progress is not and it was really awesome to be able to spend some time talking to Tom about that progress, their drive to keep at when everyone was telling them to stop, and so much more. Also, I'm fairly sure the interview took place in the world's most echo-y room. But hey, ambience amirite?I hope you enjoy this interview. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022.
