Kia ora,Welcome to Wednesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news yields are climbing as markets recognise the Fed is serious about wanting to see sustained inflation at 2%, and the US economy just keeps on powering ahead. And that is hurting equity valuations. But first, the overnight dairy auction brought higher prices. In USD terms they were up +2.75% and nearly making back the drop at the prior event. However in NZD terms the gain was +4.2%, so risks to farm gate payout forecasts have faded for now. The rises were pretty much across the board and were led by cheddar cheese, WMP and butter. In the US, the February JOLTS report delivered a little-changed set of results, far better than the expected labour market retreats. Job openings actually rose slightly.Meanwhile US factory orders came in higher than expected. New orders rose by +1.4% from the previous month in February. This was above market expectations of a +1% increase to point to further resilience of the US economy. Year-on-year they rose +3.6%.Adding to the bullish theme, the US Redbook index of retail sales rose +5.2% last week compared to year-ago levels. There's more. The Logistics Manager's Index rose to its highest reading in four months in March amid broad-based expansions in all metrics and continued progress in the transportation sector and a build-up of inventories upstream at the manufacturing and wholesale levels. But it is not all good news; Tesla missed its delivery targets in Q1-2024 by almost -15%, their least since 2022. Their stock dived -4.8% today.. But to be fair it has been on a slide since its peak in July 2023 and has since shed more than -40%.In China, all the news is about Country Garden's current sales failures. But we have heard that all before.German inflation has eased to 2.2% in March from 2.5% the previous month. This was their lowest rate since May 2021, moving closer to the ECB's target of 2.0%.In March, Australian house prices barely moved in both Sydney and Melbourne from the prior month according to CoreLogic analysis. But they zoomed higher in most other major centers. Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth all booked big gains, and year-on-year, Perth is up almost +20%.The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.36% and up another +3 bps from this time yesterday. The price of gold will start today firmer by +US$19 from yesterday at US$2259/oz, and only -US$7 below its new all-time high reached intra-day yesterday.Oil prices have risen +50 USc to just on US$84.50/bbl in the US while the international Brent price is now up at US$88.50/bbl. These are five month highs. The Kiwi dollar starts today at just on 59.6 USc and +20 bps firmer than this time yesterday. Against the Aussie we are unchanged at 91.6 AUc. Against the euro we are holding at 55.4 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today just on 69 and actually unchanged from this time yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today softer at US$65,516 and down another sharpish -4.6% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been very high at just on +/- 4.1%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

Hey there, friends! It's your podcast pal Kaylee Nix, and I just wrapped up a fantastic Thursday chat with Thomas Wasson. We dived into the world of trucking, where earnings season is in full swing and Werner's big Q4 miss has them doubling down on expedited services. Thomas shared some wisdom from Werner's strategy to grow more dedicated routes—it's like they're saying, 'We're sticking with you through thick and thin!' We also peeked into the Logistics Manager's Index, which is looking pretty sunny with transportation metrics expanding for the first time since 2019. And, get this, even though we're only halfway through Q1 of 2024, there's a buzz that the market might be on the upswing. Thomas gave us a heads up on the Federal Reserve's moves and how they could spark more optimism and truckload movements. Plus, we touched on insurance insights with Steven Ritzler from Cover Wallet. All in all, it was an episode packed with the nitty-gritty of trucking and a splash of hopeful outlooks. Can't wait to share more next week!

Successful real estate investors go through many difficulties during their first five years in the industry before reaching their peak. If you want to overcome hardships, you must never stop learning and be patient in the process. While the learning curve may be painful, everything will become straightforward once you systematically organize your strategy. Our guest experienced this during his first five years in business. In the early years, he struggled to manage everything; he faced failures and hardships; however, as the years passed, he was able to get help from others and grow his business. This week in First Responder Financial Freedom Podcast, Bill shares his story of growing his business in five years by learning continuously, acquiring advice from mentors, and adapting strategies within his network and his business partner Mike. Our guest speaker today will indeed teach you a lot. Tune in to learn more. Bill Kenny is Mike's business partner, and they have been doing business together for quite some time. They currently do wholesale, private lending, and own self-storage rentals. In addition to owning multiple properties and storage spaces, he is licensed as a real estate agent in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Why you need to check today's episode: Get a better understanding of why and how wholesale is important. Discover the best strategies from our guest expert. Hear why you must not stop lead generation and learn its importance for your business. And; Find out why you should seek a mentor when starting a business. And why it is important to have an assistant to help you run your business. “Businesses are a difficult journey because there are a million ways to do it. And there are a million ways to be successful. But it does take consistency in those small activities every day to grow that business. - Bill Kenny Topics Covered: 1:09 - “Mike's been a fireman, as everybody knows, I've been a full-time realtor, and our business has been our second full-time thing going on since we joined up in like 2014 and put our business together in 2018.“ An overview of Bill's background and how he came to work in real estate. Bill describes how he and Mike met and how they became business partners. He also shared a brief introduction about himself. 7:09: “I was listening to the Dave Ramsey show, and he talked about the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad. But he talked about that as a different philosophy from what he taught, and I thought that was pretty interesting. And then within, I would say within eight months, I just started talking to a bunch of people and found a rental property, went out and bought a rental property, had no idea what I was doing.” He shares how reading Rich Dad and Poor Dad gave him the impetus to invest in Real Estate as soon as he finished reading it. 9:33 - “So what I did was I bought a course. I think it was like $500, and I don't remember anything about the course other than it said the first thing to do is go out and join your local REIA, Real Estate Investor Association.“ Getting a good foundation in real estate requires much more than reading books and listening to podcasts. It is for this reason he encourages himself to enroll in a course where he will have the opportunity to learn from and meet others with the same interest. 10:58 - “What wholesaling does is it teaches you how to evaluate deals, and it makes you understand the markets that you're in.” Bill explains what wholesale is and how it works. Also, Mike mentioned the advantages of buying wholesale. In his explanation, buying wholesale allows you to get a house under contract and then sell it without buying it. 22:23 - “The effort that you need to put into that business and consistently do the right things. You have to do that nonstop, every day, for four to five years if you want to grow that business if you want to see any success in it. That's where you have to take that. That effort and consistency have to be there.” In Real Estate Investing, as in any other business, there are no shortcuts. Hitting your numbers requires dedication, courage, and a lot of effort. Before you hit your stride, it may take a while. But once you achieve that breakthrough, your business becomes solid. 25:44 - “The minute you stop lead generating, that's when your pipeline starts to soften up and slow up.” According to Bill, your business will fall apart 90% of the time if you cease lead generation. Real estate investment leads should not be stopped. Bill explains why. 30:42 - “One of the things that really helped me was getting a real estate coach, somebody that's done it before, and someone that can mentor you through that process.” Bill admits that it was a roller coaster ride during his first five years in business. Fortunately, he found a coach and an assistant who helped him manage his business. 38:52 - “You know, like, hiring somebody to do QuickBooks data entry. It's just like, there are people that like that, and that is much, much better at it than you are. Yes. So it's just like, wow, instead of sitting there stressing out how to figure out how to market and put this stuff on social media and do all this thing. Guess what? There are people that, for a fair rate, will do an amazing job and do it for you.” Mike stresses the importance of having someone help you with your business. Instead of thinking that it is a waste of money, think of it as a way to alleviate stress and burden. 46:30 - “Underwriting deals as underwriting deals. Do the variables change the more zeros on the end of different people involved? Yes. But there's still a skill set to do that. And you can do it once you've once you figured it out. So underwriting a hard money deal is the same as underwriting a wholesale deal, right?” Why is wholesale so important? Mike and Bill figure out why. Listen to them as they explain the reasons why. 53:26 - “I would say finding some account of accountability partner, a mentor, you know, someone that that's been down that road, a coach, whatever you want to call it, that stuff, like even if you got to pay for it that is valuable.” This a piece of advice Bill would give to his younger self, and it is also valid for anyone just getting started in the field. Key Takeaways: “Wholesaling is a good way to get started. If you're a new investor because you don't really have to own anything.” - Bill Kenny “What it takes is the effort, like we were saying, the effort that you need to put into that business and consistently do the right things. You have to do that nonstop, every day for, you know, four to five years if you want to grow that business if you want to see any success in it. That's where you have to take that. That effort and consistency have to be there.” - Bill Kenny "In real estate investing and in being a realtor, if lead generation is not at the very top, then your business is probably going to start to fall apart." - Bill Kenny “You become a realtor, and they're like, Oh, I gotta get my business card, I gotta get my business card. They spent a whole day designing the business card. Nobody gives a shit about your business card, pick up the phone and start calling somebody. Do the things that matter.” - Bill Kenny Resources Mentioned: Dave Ramsey Show: The Ramsey Show on Apple Podcasts Rich Dad, Poor Dad: Rich Dad Poor Dad: The #1 Best-Selling Personal Finance Book Ever Real Estate Reserve Podcast: Real Estate Reserve Podcast on Apple Podcasts Who Not How: Amazon.com: Who Not How: The Formula to Achieve Bigger Goals Through Accelerating Teamwork: 9781401960582: Sullivan, Dan, Hardy, Dr. Benjamin: Books Connect with Bill Kenny Facebook: Bill Kenny - Real Estate Agent | Facebook Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bill_kenny_rei/?hl=en YouTube: Bill Kenny - Real Estate Agent - YouTube LinkedIn:(2) Bill Kenny | LinkedIn Website: Top Real Estate Agents Martinsburg or Hagerstown (billkennyrei.com) Connect with First Responder Financial Freedom: Website: https://firstresponderfinancialfreedom.com/ Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/First-Responder-Financial-Freedom-104285545708905 Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/516680892660393

New Zealand's key exporters are chartering private ships to ferry produce to foreign markets, amid a Covid-driven cargo crisis. Meat producers and fresh fruit and vege producers are struggling to get goods to overseas buyers because of on-going container ship congestion. As more goods are being shipped, and delays lay siege to best-by dates, meat company Affco has resorted to chartering private vessels to get exports - valued at close to $120m - to their overseas markets. The company's third ship recently set sail from the Port of Tauranga, carrying 6,000 tonnes of frozen meat, destined for California and America's emptying meat aisles. And it's not just Affco. Rival meat companies and other primary producers are on board. In fact half the space in the first export vessel chartered was taken up by pip fruit exporters. Kathryn is joined by Simon Beale, both Logistics Manager for Turners and Growers, and Chair of the NZ Council of Cargo Owners and Mark de Lautour, Head of Affco sales and marketing, who have chartered three ships so far, and predicts this predicament is set to continue for three more years.

It should come as news to no one that the pandemic broke global supply chains, and they remain in need of repair. Container ships are backed up waiting to unload. Shortages are causing massive delays. Capacity is limited, companies cannot find labor, nor can they find the drivers to transport the goods they do have. Add to that the threats of severe weather, cyber security concerns, a failing infrastructure, and lingering impacts of a worldwide pandemic. It is certainly an interesting time to be a supply chain professional. But with each of these threats comes opportunities. We'll explore it all with industry insiders and thought leaders on "The Top 10 Supply Chain Threats” a new, 11-episode, podcast series from CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly.Episode 2: Threat: Spiraling CostsSupply chain and logistics costs are skyrocketing as demand for transportation and warehousing capacity outstrips supply. Is there any relief in sight? Zachary Rogers, professor at Colorado State University, joins Executive Editor Susan Lacefield to draw on data and insights from the Logistics Manager's Index to give us a glimpse of what the future may hold. PODCAST WITH INSIGHT: Joining host Peter Haddock for this latest podcast, sponsored by our friends at used equipment specialist Ritchie Bros UK, is Vinnie Quinn, the Director of Construction Camera Specialist, Evercam. Vinnie has a vision for how clever cameras can help us integrate and change the industry we work in, keeping people safe whilst increasing productivity and efficiency. Clever cameras can now do this by integrating feeds using clever software as he explains in this in-depth podcast. Vinnie: "By capturing and defining what is happening on site from day one, you can look back at activity and even answer queries from supply chain members on things like aggregate deliveries, etc. You can even spot anomalies where a truck might not have gone over a weighbridge due to onsite issues. "But it's the real-time activity that is so important when it comes to operating a site more efficiently. This is where clever cameras can make all the difference. Providing live and recorded access to images and data to QS, Logistics Manager and H&S managers also speeds up decision making and dispute resolution." You can also read an interview with Vinnie Quinn by Peter Haddock in the October 2021 edition of Earthmovers Magazine. Julius is stepped into the role of family elder, career elder and hero (just ask his grandson). He's a Logistics Manager for Bacardi Limited. After serving five years in the Marines on the West Coast, he returned to Jacksonville to find work. It didn't take long for him to realize he needed to return to college for promotions. He didn't have a history of being an academic go-getter. Still, encouraged by his wife, he joined his wife in going to college. In this very special 3 part series, Adam gets to sit down Lise-Marie Dawn. This is how Lise describes herself and the content for this interview. In my early 30's I was married, was trying to have a child, and was committed to my career as Logistics Manager for Holland-America Princess... when I encountered a terrifying, heartbreaking near-death experience. In the course of a few minutes, everything changed. And my life as I knew it fell apart in the months to follow. I'm now 39, and I've spent the last 6 years healing and studying (in addition to normal life responsibilities). I wanted to understand how I caused the circumstances in my life, and how to transcend it. I've since discovered a deep passion to bring awareness and knowledge to the conversation surrounding domestic violence and early childhood trauma. I believe my purpose is to lift myself and others to the greatest authentic expression through daring passion and loving empowerment. This is my first invitation to speak on the subject in a public format, and I am so thrilled to be on the podcast! I spend much of my free time engaged in all different kinds of dance, but my favorite is Latin Dancing and Aerial Acrobatics. I'm advanced in conversational Spanish, though I have been out of practice for some time (maybe rusty) I actively studied and practiced Diamond Way Buddhism with a Buddhist community in Minneapolis, MN from 2003-2007. I still identify as Buddhist, but my practice has slowed considerably since moving back to Alaska. I discovered Buddhism when I was looking for a way to lower my stress level, and what I discovered was that I had always been Buddhist, I just never knew it. Plastic Plague Series: PART 6 (of 7) THE PARADIGM SHIFT - we explore how reduction, recycling, and technology can create a paradigm shift that is solution oriented, equitable, and achievable. Our guests include Claire Arkin, from GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives), Marcus Eriksen of 5 Gyres Institute, and Keng Baloco, of Athens Services. There is too much plastic production for recycling to be the end-all-be-all solution to our problems, not to mention the inequity from its creation to disposal. However, waste-to-energy, chemical recycling, and plastic-to-fuel also have their concerns and might not be the winning silver bullet. Solutions best laid are community oriented and do not compromise the needs of future generations. So who is responsible for shifting the norm? Is it consumers, business, or manufacturers? How do we create community-based solutions? And how do these solutions around reuse and recycling weather issues and concerns related to virus spread and pandemics like COVID-19. Tune in to hear from the experts. Claire Arkin is the Communications Coordinator at GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives) [http://www.no-burn.org]. Her work has been featured in such outlets as The Guardian, Resource-Recycling and the San Francisco Chronicle. She recently coordinated a global investigative project called “Discarded” that documented impacts of the global plastic waste trade on communities in Southeast Asia. Marcus Eriksen, 5 Gyres Institute [https://www.5gyres.org] – Research Director and Co-Founder. As an environmental scientists publishing the first global estimate of plastics in the world’s oceans, and co-discovering microbeads in the Great Lakes, Marcus and his team use research to inform campaigns aimed at changing the systems that pollute the planet and communities. Keng Baloco, Commodity Sales and Logistics Manager, Athens Services [https://athensservices.com/] has 13 years of experience in the waste and recycling industry. She currently markets commodities to domestic and international markets, finding homes for post-consumer plastic, fiber, metal, glass and other commodities. “Sustainability is the common thread that unites us all in the world of agriculture.” Lori Taylor (20:15) The Velazquez de León Family are Pioneers in the Organic Industry. Mayra and Daniella Velazquez de León are an ultimate mother daughter duo, continuing a rich heritage in the agriculture industry that stretches for four generations. Mayra's father was the first commercial organic banana grower in the world, before the standards for organic farming were even in place. In 1974, the goal wasn't to be “organic” or to make huge profits, but to grow the bananas “wild” and get them to consumers. This dream has evolved over the last 40 years. Mayra is the President and CEO and Daniella is the Logistics Manager of Organics Unlimited. Founded in 2000, Organics Unlimited is the largest family-operated organic banana company in America and is the world's top producer of organic bananas. Their supply chain stretches from the West Coast into Canada, and parts of Asia. Organics Unlimited is committed to providing premium quality organic bananas through a culture of sustainability, caring for communities, and excellent customer service. “We're giving you something that nature has given back to us and we wanted to make sure we could produce more with an organic system” - Myra Velazquez de León (7:47) How Organics Unlimited Gives Back. In 2005, Organics Unlimited began Grow, a program focused on giving back to the growers and growing communities. Historically, the regions where the bananas are grown are underprivileged. Organics Unlimited is working to break the poverty cycle and provide better lives for the workers. For each box of bananas that is purchased, $.60 is donated to the Grow fund. To date, they have contributed over $2.7 million. The funds are managed independently to give accountability and provide transparency, and the main portion of the funds go to scholarship programs to help bolster the education of the communities, and provide a promising future for upcoming generations. Some Helpful Terms. When looking at organic produce, it can be helpful to understand a couple of terms that are typically used. USDA Certified Organic All Organics Unlimited bananas are labeled with the USDA Certified Organic seal. In order to receive this certification, certifiers visit growing sites each year to test soil, leaves, and fruit. Certified growers are also required to leave a minimal carbon footprint. Fair Trade While there are designated fair trade certifications, for a company to be considered “fair trade” they must practice ethical business practices and also do their part to give back to the community. Why Should You Purchase Organic Bananas? It can often be difficult to determine whether to purchase organic or conventional produce. While more and more individuals are making the switch, it's helpful to understand the benefits of organic bananas. People often don't understand the cost involved when growing and distributing organic bananas. In fact, bananas are often sold at a loss in local grocery stores. Supporting companies, like Organics Unlimited, helps ensure that you are putting high quality produce in your body, and supporting a company that believes in the value of caring for the banana growers. “Of course it's profit driven, but at the end of the day we want to make sure that the growers are getting a fair price for their fruit. Bananas are a product that in supermarkets are often sold at a loss… consumers need to know what the true cost is, so at the end of the day the growers can get a fair price for their product.” - Daniella Velazquez de León (17:40) Organics Unlimited believes in taking care of our environment, stewarding the soil by not polluting it with traditional pesticides. Their farming methods contribute to soil health, increase biodiversity and improve water quality. Not to mention, the bananas are practically grown in our backyard. Ninety-five percent of Organics Unlimited bananas are grown in Mexico, and the other 5% in Ecuador.. Conventionally grown bananas often spend 2-3 weeks in transport before they reach our shores. Organics Unlimited bananas spend an average of 2-4 days. This means the bananas are fresher, and the carbon footprint is smaller. In fact, Organics Unlimited has the lowest carbon footprint. The next time you are grabbing a bunch of bananas at your local grocer, think of the growers, the soil the bananas were grown in, and the myriad of individuals who have put in hours of work to get that bunch into your cart. Organics Unlimited is doing their part to pour intentionality into every link in the produce chain, and hopefully one of their bananas, grown with love, makes it into your cart. Life Before The Big Comeback You may have heard this enough times but it's worth mentioning. Competing is a race. But you should stick to your own path, and run at your own pace. For this reason, goal setting is critical when deciding to engage in the sport. It's quite important to have an end result specific to what you want to eventually achieve. By setting clearly defined goals, you will never feel as if you're adrift. You will also never get a point where a need to compare yourself with others is necessitated. This simply means when you engage the right gear from the word go, you will have it easy irrespective of the outcome. So how do you define your path? Let's find out with Liz Yisrael.
