POPULARITY
In this episode we hash out some some important survival strategies that you may actually find rewarding while living under a sky that rains planes down on you all day long. We also rack up another state on our desperate race to 50... can you believe how non-trivial it is to find 50 hardcore bands? But someone finally convinced us to skip the Slipknot episode and do MODERN LIFE IS WAR instead. Amazing!

Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week on the pod I talked with my good friend Matt Evans of the band Serrate, and previously of the bands Old Flings and Just Die! We talked about Modern Life is War's 2005 album, "Witness." We also talked about growing up in small towns, collecting dead formats and finding different characters to play music with. Check out Matt's new band Serrate, they just released their debut EP. It's really cool skramzy hardcore for fans of Pg. 99, Majority Rule, Backstabbers Inc and just good metallic hardcore. https://serratenc.bandcamp.com/album/serrate SUPPORT LUKE'S GOFUNDME HERE: https://www.gofundme.com/f/gt55zq-lukes-journey

In the moment of their triumph, they saw the death prepared for them, yet they accepted the treachery. Can you say they did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? Ian sat down with members of the Iowa melodic hardcore band Modern Life Is War before their show at Vera Project to talk about reuniting the band, new music in 2020, early influences, growing up on Seattle music and more. The 2 songs that appear in the interview are from "Tribulation Worksongs Vol.1" and "Tribulation Worksongs Vol. 2". Check out more from Modern Life Is War here
Like every genre, hardcore has evolved over the years. From its snotty beginnings in the 80s to the present day, it’s been welded to just about every genre and subgenre of punk rock you can imagine. In this episode, we dedicate a little bit of time to talking about melodic hardcore, the bastard offshoot of hardcore, punk and emo. Oh and we talk about Witness by Modern Life is War. A “foundational text”, as Mark puts it, for this kind of music. It’s an album which has influenced a crazy number of artists. What’s more, it comes out of a tiny town in rural Iowa, a town that lead singer Jeremy Eaton has described as a place completely devoid of art of any kind. A marked change from their debut, My Love, My Way, it seen the band fuse Bane-esque hardcore with 90s emo to create the kind of melancholic, sincere, heart on sleeve style of music which straddles many genres. Critically lauded at the time, if you’ve been within feet of a hardcore show at any point in the last decade you’ll have heard a band attempting to imitate this kind of music. So much so in fact that if you’re unfamiliar with the genre, you might even find this a bit generic. But make no mistake about it, these guys were the progenitors. Along with the likes of Have Heart, Verse and Sinking Ships, Modern Life is War were band who were ahead of their time. Mark brings this to the table on the basis that they’re an unsung band. They ceased being a full time band almost a decade ago, a result of endless touring that seemed to be bearing little fruit, but their legacy echoes through the ages. Is it worthy of a place in our discography though? Well, that’s up to you to decide.

Sicko was an American rock group from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1991. Exceptionally, the three-piece pop-punk group maintained a constant membership for every recording as a band. This line-up was Denny Bartlett (guitar, bass, vocals), Ean Hernandez (guitar, bass, vocals), and Josh Rubin (drums, brother of Aaron Rubin from The Mr. T Experience). Sicko released four full-length albums and five 7" eps as well as a retrospective CD with unreleased and rare material, a released demo and a tour video. They also appeared on approximately fourteen compilations on labels such as Lookout! Records and Liberation Records. They once exchanged covers with Cub. The vast majority of their recorded output was recorded by Kurt Bloch of The Fastbacks and released on Seattle-based punk label eMpTy Records. One EP and the retrospective CD were released on Mutant Pop Records. Three Sicko songs were featured on the Xbox game Project Gotham Racing 2 alongside artists like The Flaming Lips and Princess Superstar. 88 Fingers Louie is an American band from Chicago which was formed in 1993. They played a style of hardcore punk, melodic hardcore, and punk rock. After disbanding in 1999, guitarist Dan Wleklinski and bassist Joe Principe formed the well-known punk rock band Rise Against. The band reunited in 2009 and has continued playing shows in Chicago, Canada, Belgium, Las Vegas, and Asbury Park. The band held a 20th-anniversary show in 2013. The name comes from a Flintstones gangster who sells dodgy pianos. Fun fact, Denis is a fan of the podcast. Well, I mean he said he liked a few episodes so I’m going to take that as he has the logo tattooed on his chest now.

Bo Becker can be called many things: musician, producer, videographer, clothing line designer...guy, among other things. His versatility no knows bounds. Growing up in Marshalltown, IA helped fuel his creative gas tank and he doesn't take it for granted. Neither do his hometown peers, as he was recruited to play guitar for the revered Modern Life is War in the spring of 2018. On top of his work in other bands (Land of Blood & Sunshine, Idolist), he has come into his own producing video pieces under the name Transpiritus. He has recently spent many hours producing the well received web series, upstairs IOWA. A series highlighting unique performances and interviews with a crop of Iowa based musicians, upstairs IOWA seasons 1 & 2 can be viewed on YouTube, Vimeo, and Facebook.

Ah, l’épisode 26 ou le début de la fin comme on l’appelle… Un épisode au bout du slip, dans lequel on revient malgré tout sur l’interview de Celeste, les cashless qui se remplissent, quelques news métal avec les nouveautés à écouter. Une rapide, beaucoup trop succincte chronique de Mos Generator et enfin quelque groupes réécoutés, approfondies, décortiqués tel que Cro-Mags, Oranssi Pazuzu, Alice In Chains, Orange Goblin, Modern Life Is War, At the Gates… Avec bien sur un peu de bonne humeur , quelques blagounettes, une voir deux bière max et toujours présentés par vos deux piliers de Bar, Jack… Et Bob.
Jeffrey Eaton is the singer for the punk/hardcore band Modern Life is War. An all around Renaissance man, Jeff plays music, spins records, skates, writes poetry, and can talk for hours about the music he loves. This was a really special episode for me. John Eich is a founder and guitarist of revered hardcore & punk outfit, Modern Life is War. Eich was born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa where he picked up guitar in his adolescence. He cut his teeth in playing in bands prominent to the area like Safety Second, and My Pet Robot. John's humble attitude towards his success in music is endearing considering MLIW's countless world tours and accolades bestowed on them over the years regarding their place in contemporary hardcore. We also talk; early inspirations, social media disdain, life on and off the road, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as the current status of MLIW and rumors of a new record.

HOUSECLEANING/LISTENER QUESTION First race of the season is in the books “John and Kyle, Great to hear a new episode guys! My favorite show to date for sure. A question I've had for you guys that I've been wanting to ask for a while is whether or not either of you actually listen to music when putting in miles on the bike? I definitely refrain from plugging in when riding singletrack most importantly due to just being aware of other trail users, but when it comes to gravel or road riding, are tunes a necessary component for your training? Finally, thanks for the tip on Achilles! Super sweet stuff. Take care guys. Grant” RECORD REVIEW World Be Free – 'The AntiCircle' Released: February 5 2016 – Revelation Records World Be Free's story began in the fall of 2014, when Scott Vogel (Terror, Buried Alive), Joe Garlipp (Envy), Andrew Kline (Strife), and Sammy Siegler (Judge, CIV, Rival Schools) met monthly to write classicinfluenced, melodic and positive hardcore. All of this developed without a label, budget or any mention to the outside world. When Siegler scored some recording time at Hurley, they flew in Arthur Smilios (Gorilla Biscuits, CIV) to cover on bass and hustled into the studio. Vogel and Terror bandmate Nick Jett then tracked vocals at Jett's studio, passing the ball to Walter Schreifels (Rival Schools, Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits) for one final guest spot. With their album finished and its release fast approaching, Top 5 – Primal Reaction Records. Something about these 5 records speaks to that dark place in your soul. Pure raw aggression and power.. UNBROKEN – Life Love Regret – 1994 New Age Records Life. Love. Regret. is everything that hardcore is. It is the heart, the soul, the sound, and the attitude. The music is loud and in your face, but most importantly, passion is put at the top. This album is a monument by a monolithic band. From the crushing riff and sinister notes at the beginning of "D4" to the ending feedback in the nine minute "Curtain." Breather Resist – Only In The Morning – March 25, 2003 Deathwish Inc Breather Resist formed in 2002 and recorded 8 songs, 4 of which were on handmade demos. These 8 songs became their first EP, "Only in the Morning", released on Deathwish, Inc.. Their first LP, Charmer, was released on Jade Tree Records in October 2004, having been produced by Kurt Ballou. In December 2005, lead singer Steve Sidoni left the group; Buried Alive – Death Of Your Perfect World – April 20, 1999 Victory Produced by Steve Evetts at Trax East Studios. It is the band's only album with Jesse Muscato on drums. CURSED – I – February 23, 2005 Deathwish Inc Formed in 2001 a year after the breakup of The Swarm aka Knee Deep in the Dead. Known for their trademark nihilistic and dystopian lyrical themes, stark classic horror imagery and loud, abrasive live shows. Integrity – Those Who Fear Tomorrow – 1991 Overkill Records Integrity's For Those Who Fear Tomorrow is a hardcore juggernaut that has lurked in infamy for over 15 years. Recorded in 1991, For Those Who Fear Tomorrow is often credited as on of the first true metalcore" albums. While hardcore crossover bands like the Cro Mags and Corrosion of Conformity had existed before Integrity, few were prepared for the world Integrity brought to life with their debut album. FTWFT's razor sharp metallic edges, driving hardcore verses, and gloomy breakdowns set a stage for one of hardcore's most messianic and charismatic front men: Dwid Hellion. The album has been issued in close to 10 different editions and formats. It has never received proper distribution or promotion, but it has survived: a truly bastardized child of hardcore, metal, and a darkness of the soul. I have been incredibly fortunate thus far to chat with those people whose art has affected me in various ways over the years. Jeffery Eaton and Chris Hoeneck from Modern Life is War are the guests on this week's podcast and I don't think it's exaggerating to say that their second album 'Witness' is possibly the single most influential hardcore album of this century.'Witness' started a movement. It ushered forth an era of hardcore music which is just coming into its prime. If you know Modern Life is War, you no doubt know those who are indebted to them. If you don't, take some time to check out 'Witness.' Go ahead. I'll wait. It's a short album....Done?Good.In 2008 Mod Life split up. It seemed as though they'd burned out. But five years later they reformed, surprising everyone by bringing a new album along for the ride. It seemed as though the time apart had strengthened the band and musically, it was like they hadn't missed a step.Jeff and Chris are aware of and extremely humbled by the way their legacy has unfolded. Now a part time band, they tour sporadically, still work day jobs and are a band as and when time allows. In the period between 2002 and 2008, those fearsome six years that seen relentless touring, six albums, an EP and a bunch of 7" records, their life was consumed Modern Life is War. But as you will hear in the interview, the band seem better now that there is no pressure on them to do anything. Jeff mentions how they never really spent time in the one place during those six years, never being able to settle before the next tour or record came along.Highlights of this interview include:Having to balance the desire to not be nostalgic against giving the fans what they want in terms of an anniversary show for WitnessThat the album is important to them and others, and that it's important to celebrate itAnd still being proud of the recordWhat kept the band's creativity and drive goingWhen the ball started rolling with the band they decided to take that opportunity for all its worth because they may never have the chance againAnd being shocked at being able to do it all over againStill being shocked that people care about their band after so longPutting out the latest record ‘Fever Hunting' was scary because it may have disappoint fans or ruin their legacy after being away for six yearsJeff's hunger for a truthful perspective, and how this influenced the lyrics on the latest album – the band are no longer in youthful turmoil, they're now grown up and are talking about grown up concernsHaving a very diverse audience in terms of ageBeing honoured that people want to talk to them and being honoured when people say they love their musicThey don't pull punches or fake it – they don't write music they think people want to hear, it's about writing music that's necessary for their life or other's livesThe moment they realised when they wanted to be in a band – Jeff was a huge fan of Chris' old bandThe obsession with punk is what brought the band back – there was a hole in their livesJeff: “I tried to start other bands but nothing feels like playing with Chris and these guys. I know them and trust them. We developed a chemistry that goes beyond playing on stage.”They had to save their lives before they could be a band again – all the band needed was a breakHow the band came back togetherGoing back to real life may have hit their ego a little, but it was the best thing they could have doneThey enjoy being a band that has to work for a living instead of being on the road all the timeBeing on tour is not a genuine lifestyle – being able to live real life is what Modern Life is Wall is all aboutHardcore and punk is working class music and you really need to be working class to make it, and Modern Life is War are working class guysJeff doesn't think of the band as original – always looking for inspiration that is as deep as the ocean floor. He pays tributes to all of his influencesJeff then asks me what my life story is and then asks me to send him my bands and stuffModern Life is War are still in touch with what's going on in punkAfter the interview, and after the first band played, Jeff and Chris came over to talk to us. Chris explained how he loves the way the band is now, discussing how the pressure of being in a band, having to write records, having to tour and essentially be told what to do from multiple parties created a lot of stress within. That, on top of worrying about bills and so forth seemed to be something that he did not miss. Yet, he also didn't take their current position for granted. The band are still staggered that people give a shit, that people can come out to shows to celebrate the tenth anniversary of an album. To see the same faces ten years on, to know that people related to and have grown up with this band, and how these people have grown themselves yet still are drawn back to the music is something that they seem to be continually stunned by.The band played with a smile on their faces. Jeff is not only a very humble man but he's insightful and still, to this day, passionate about punk. All qualities that were evident on stage. He asked me to email them with all the stuff I do - the podcast, the bands... all of it. No one's ever asked that before. To have someone who I respect ask about me is...Staggering.I guess, like Modern Life is War, I'm stunned that people care about this wee thing I call a podcast.I hope you enjoy the episode. It's the most inspiring one yet.Featured MusicIntro: Voodoo Puppets – Electric Chair Blues (used under CC licence, you can check it out here).Modern Life is War - Young Man on a Spree,Modern Life is War - D.E.A.D.R.A.M.O.N.E.S.Modern Life is War - CurrencyI make no claim to the copyright of any of the music in this episode.LinksYou can check out Modern Life is War on Twitter and Facebook.Their records are available from the Deathwish Inc. webstore and distro.Thank you!My thanks are eternal to you and everyone else who has listened to the podcast and helped me get it to where it is. Welcome to the latest re-imaging of the 80s classic, CINEPUNX! In this creative new vision we have cast Liam in the role of Ricky Martin, and Josh in the role of Weng Weng! Ok wait no, this is the episode where we discuss remakes, in depth, and with our friend Jackee Sadicario! You may know Jackee from the literary magazine Bedfellows which is exactly what it sounds like. We think it sounds awesome, so that is what it is. Jackee is also a long time fixture in the Hardcore scene, and though she is from Long Island, has been in Philly for 8 years. Being from Long Island, she cannot help but discuss Crime in Stereo on the show, but we love her anyway. We also spend no small amount of time talking about how great Spy was and then Jackee bad mouths that band FRAMEWORKS, actually she talks trash on almost all the bands that opened that recent MODERN LIFE IS WAR show. It was so cool. Things we discuss in this episode worthy of links: 1. Bedfellows 2. Young Ones 3, How there is nothing Filipino about Starship Troopers 4. Philadelphia Hardcore Shows 5. Exhumed Films 6. The Mahoning Drive-in Not sure if those links are all that helpful, but links encourage clicks, right? RIGHT? Jackee was a dream to talk to, had some great insights about remakes and specifically the Dawn of the Dead remake and the upcoming The Craft remake. Hope we can have her one again soon SOUND NOTES This week, thanks in some small part to Sunny of Hate5six we were able to record through a soundboard. I think the sound turned out noticeably better, what do you think? Let us know in yonder comments. Ok, thanks. The post Episode 30: REMAKES, AND WHY WE HATE THEM WITH JACKEE SADICARIO appeared first on Cinepunx.
Jeff Eaton is the singer of landmark hardcore band Modern Life is War. He also moonlights as a dj using the moniker DJ Eight Ten. Since the turn of the century, MLIW has become an icon in underground circuits worldwide for their cutting, aggressive, punk & hardcore influenced music and their volatile live performances. Under DJ Eight Ten, Jeff has made his monthly dance/soul/funk parties become a Des Moines nightlife destination. We sit down for in depth chat about all things MLIW, the up and downs the band has had over the years from break ups to their much anticipated return last year, his humble beginnings and punk influences growing up in Marshalltown, moving around in his adult life, being a dj, reflecting about his somewhat controversial comments regarding the Ferguson, Mo situation, and a boat load more.

One afternoon the vocalist of Modern Life Is War, Jeff Eaton, and I spoke at length about small town living, reflection and reunions.
