Original Air Date: July 9, 2018New York Times best-selling author and food expert Michael Pollan discusses our evolving relationship with food, what it means to eat with a fuller consciousness and how having a heightened awareness of the food that goes into our bodies can improve our physical and spiritual well-being. Michael says that food is an important link to other people, from those we dine with to those who produce what we eat. In light of that connection, Michael says mealtime is an opportunity to express what we believe in and learn about others' values as well. He says his awakening about the deeper meaning of food came about in the garden, a place he says has taught him many life lessons. Michael was named one of Newsweek magazine's Top 10 "New Thought Leaders" and Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World." Want more podcasts from OWN? James Trapp exemplifies overcoming adversity. The oldest of eight children, he was abandoned by his birth mother during his formative years. Nevertheless, he attended Princeton University, and became a successful criminal defense attorney in South Florida. It all came crumbling down when he became addicted to drugs while defending some nefarious Miami Vice types. He lost everything and at his lowest moved into a halfway house where he began to explore spirituality. He now knows this was all part of his journey into his true calling. “If someone had told me a few years earlier that there were a thousand things I might do with my life, being a minister wouldn't have been one of them. But here I am — and it's definitely who I am.” He became an ordained minister in 1994, and started pastoring Unity on the Bay (UOTB) in Miami. By 2005, over 70 percent of the congregation was between ages 20 and 49 and Sunday attendance increased from 125 congregants in 1994 to more than 1300 in 2005. Revenues grew from $200,000 in 1994 to nearly $1.9 million in 2005, when Dr. Trapp became President and CEO of Unity Worldwide Ministries (UWM), overseeing over 2,000 churches. What I love about James is his humility and vision. He says, “We are not here to casually observe the unfolding of history. We are here to consciously participate in its revelation. Our world is remade, reformed, and transformed by the cutting-edge ideas we are in conversation about on a daily basis." For more than thirty years, Michael Pollan has been writing books and articles about the places where nature and culture intersect: on our plates, in our farms and gardens, and in our minds. He is the author of the multiple New York Times best sellers, including How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence, Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation (2013), Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual (2010); In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto (2008); The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals (2006) and The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World (2001). In his latest audiobook Caffeine: How caffeine created the modern world, Michal Pollan offers his provocative look into the profound ways that what we eat affects how we live. Caffeine, it turns out, has changed the course of human history: Pollan’s reporting explores how caffeine has won and lost wars, changed politics, and dominated economies. The science behind caffeine addiction forms the fascinating backdrop to this definitive look at an insidious drug that hides in plain sight. With his wide-ranging talent to entertain, inform, and perform, Michael Pollan’s Caffeine is essential listening in a world where an estimated two billion cups of coffee are consumed every day. Several of his books have been adapted for television. Netflix created a four-part documentary series based on Cooked in 2016, and documentary adaptations of In Defense of Food (2015) and The Botany of Desire (2009) both premiered on PBS. Pollan also appeared in the Academy Award nominated 2009 feature documentary, Food Inc. In 2015-2016, Pollan was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard. In 2013, he was awarded Italy’s Premio Nonino prize. In 2012, he was given the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers. In 2010, Pollan was named to the 2010 TIME 100, the magazine’s annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people. Also in 2010 he was also awarded the Lennon Ono Grant for Peace by Yoko Ono. In 2009 he was named by Newsweek as one of the top 10 “New Thought Leaders.” Recorded at our second online 5x15 in May 2020. 5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations.
