I've heard a ton of ideas on culture change and creating inclusive dialogue, but nothing so well thought-out, creative and scalable as this. Jennifer Graham is a visionary “conversation cultivator” and the Founder and CEO of Inclusivv, a visionary culture change company. She spent years running TEDxAtlanta, but got frustrated by the 1-way dialogue. She wanted to move from me-to-you “ideas worth spreading” to a conversation that could bring multiple diverse voices together for “conversations that matter.” How do you get people to engage with one another around difficult subjects? How do you get them to listen to one another and learn from the experience? How do you get bosses and subordinates from diverse backgrounds to gain common understanding? These are some of the questions that Jennifer has been able to answer with her unique “conversation technology” that's at the heart of what her company, INCLUSIVV, does. One part of the conversation that made my mind explode just a bit was how this “conversation technology” can be used to get people to engage more deeply and meaningfully at events, in book launches and around programs you may run in your company. She is on a mission to design a more inclusive and sustainable world by using the art of conversation to drive real and lasting change. I've spent my professional career pioneering the relationship between core wounds and marketing, but this interview with Dr. Mario Martinez was one I didn't see coming! He has pioneered the direct link between your emotional wounds and your immune response, with credible research evidence to back it up. He's a true visionary who blew my mind with his research and the emotional “antidotes” to negative immune responses in the body. Dr. Mario Martinez is a clinical neuropsychologist and cultural psychoneuroimmunologist. In his biocognitive model, Mario identifies complex pathways showing how our cultural beliefs affect our immune, nervous, and endocrine systems, and translates them to create practical applications. He is the preeminent proponent of cultural psychoneuroimmunology, and has published numerous articles on “causes of health” based on his research with healthy centenarians on five different continents. He has studied healthy centenarians worldwide and found that only 20 to 25% can be attributed to genetics - the rest is related to how they live and the cultural beliefs they share. He is the author of the bestselling book The MindBody Code: How to Change the Beliefs that Limit Your Health, Longevity, and Success that teaches his theory and practice of biocognitive science to the general public. James Trapp exemplifies overcoming adversity. The oldest of eight children, he was abandoned by his birth mother during his formative years. Nevertheless, he attended Princeton University, and became a successful criminal defense attorney in South Florida. It all came crumbling down when he became addicted to drugs while defending some nefarious Miami Vice types. He lost everything and at his lowest moved into a halfway house where he began to explore spirituality. He now knows this was all part of his journey into his true calling. “If someone had told me a few years earlier that there were a thousand things I might do with my life, being a minister wouldn't have been one of them. But here I am — and it's definitely who I am.” He became an ordained minister in 1994, and started pastoring Unity on the Bay (UOTB) in Miami. By 2005, over 70 percent of the congregation was between ages 20 and 49 and Sunday attendance increased from 125 congregants in 1994 to more than 1300 in 2005. Revenues grew from $200,000 in 1994 to nearly $1.9 million in 2005, when Dr. Trapp became President and CEO of Unity Worldwide Ministries (UWM), overseeing over 2,000 churches. What I love about James is his humility and vision. He says, “We are not here to casually observe the unfolding of history. We are here to consciously participate in its revelation. Our world is remade, reformed, and transformed by the cutting-edge ideas we are in conversation about on a daily basis." How do we get more people's voices heard - especially in corporate environments where power usually stays concentrated at the top? Patrice is using it specifically to address power inequity, giving People of Color, LGBTQ peole and others whose voices are typically marginalized the opportunity to share their expeirence, first hand, with a senior leader (who is often cis geneder, white, and male). In this conversation, Patrice shares her experience of pioneering this approach at Virgin Atlantic, some of the pit-falls people can fall into when setting this up in their organizations, and the hard-won lessons that create success. Brett Jones says he knew as a kid that he wasn't attracted to girls like the other boys he knew. But he didn't have a name for how he felt until he heard a sermon denouncing the evils of homosexuality. “Oh, that's what it's called” he thought. But even before that sermon, he knew his sexuality wasn't something he'd be discussing with his father, a Vietnam-era fighter pilot. In fact, when Brett was 16, his parents kicked him out the house when they learned of his interest in other boys. Brett never considered his sexuality to be his most defining characteristic. His most defining characteristic was his ambition. As he puts it in his book, "I was somehow determined to become a Navy SEAL. I was going to prove to the world that this 'faggot' would accomplish what tens of thousands of straight men had failed to do.” After he was outed, Brett says “I had a lot of really hateful thoughts "I drank a lot, and I was a very angry person - but I realized I had to change something. I've managed to forgive everyone -- the Navy, everyone." Tonya Surman is a master gardener of social innovation. Tonya's journey began when she was four years-old. Her mother left, and her father became the sole parent. Tonya, her Father and younger sister struggled with poverty. She says, “My father raised us on love, not food.” She points to this experience as the source of her resilience, strength and a need to create an impact. At the age of 19, Tonya left university life behind and traveled the world. While she was living in a small hut on the Andaman Sea in Thailand, news arrived that a nearby village had been devastated by a mudslide. The primary contributing factor was deforestation. This helped her to draw a direct correlation between the environment and social economic issues. Tonya is now one of Canada's leading social entrepreneurs and a pioneer in the coworking and social enterprise movements. She has a passion for bringing life to world-changing projects. Highlights from her 20-year career include co-founding and leading the Centre for Social Innovation which is a collaborative workspace, a community, and a launchpad for over 1000 social enterprises. She also developed the Constellation Model - a multi-stakeholder partnership framework that was used for a number of projects, including banning toxic chemicals in baby bottles, organizing 40,000+ Ontario nonprofits into a network with policy-making clout, launching the Ontario Catapult Microloan Fund with government, corporate and nonprofit partners, and creating the Community Bond, a social finance tool that raised $6.3 million to purchase two buildings in downtown Toronto for social innovation. Tonya is the recipient of numerous awards: the Ashoka Foundation, Canadian Urban Institute, Toronto Community Foundation, New Media Awards, the Trillium Foundation, and Entrepreneur of the Year for Socialight Canada are among the many organizations that have recognized her leadership and contributions. Adrian Tam is a crusading, 28 year old, LGBT representative in the Hawaii State Legislature. He defeated a Proud Boys opponent to win his seat, with 63 percent of the vote. He is the first openly gay member of the Hawaii State Legislator and says his real victory was not in defeating a Proud Boys opponent in the general election, but rather unseating a 12 year incumbent in the primary. He was born and raised in Honolulu, where he now represents District 22 serving Waikiki and Ala Moana. He serves as Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Health, Human Services, and Homelessness, and as a member of the House Committee on Culture and the Arts and the Committee on Finance. As a young, soft-spoken gay man, people tried to dissuade him from running, but he felt he “had to” no matter the odds because no one was doing the work for the people. We discuss his calling to run for state government, his commitment to the people, and how he decided to move from activist to advocate in his leadership. Angie Wang is wickedly funny, deeply spiritual, swears like a sailor, and has the kind of blunt honesty that's incredibly refreshing. She grew up poor with working class Asian parents in Newark NJ. She didn't grow up as a "model minority,” belying the stereotypes of quiet, polite, affluent Asians. She has the gumption to say, “I'm going to do it,” which led her to make her first feature film, MDMA. It's based on her time at Rutgers when she got a student job in the Chemistry lab and made ecstasy to sell. One reason she loves film is the ability to bring positive Asian role models to the media… including “unmodel minorities.” GUEST LINKS: FB: https://www.facebook.com/angie.s.wang IG: https://www.instagram.com/jadegirlsmom Twitter: https://twitter.com/jadegirlsmom To find more about Jeffrey's work, go to: https://thecourageousmessenger.com/ If you like this show, please leave us a review here - even a one-sentence review helps!

It exposes prejudice and bigotry for what it is - an irrational class system based upon purely arbitrary factors. She has since led this exercise in civic and corporate settings for many decades, highlighting the arbitrary and irrational basis of prejudice, an issue that Americans continue to grapple with more than five decades after she started.
