Dennis is joined via Zoom by writer for Part 2 of their conversation about Paul's new novel What Is Wrong With You? as well as his previous novel Farrell Covington and the Limits of Style, both of which offer readers sides of Rudnick they haven't seen before. In Part 2, Paul talks about the raw rage and freedom he felt while writing Farrell alone in a room during the pandemic, the lost gay Koch brother who loosely inspired the book and his early 20's club days in NYC, dancing the night away at Studio 54 and Paradise Garage, both of which are featured in Farrell. He also talks about why enjoys posting on Twitter, the post he wrote that went the most viral and why he can't resist cracking wise about MAGA gals Lara Trump, MTG, Kari Lake and Kristi Noem. He also recalls making Coastal Elites for HBO during lookdown with actors like Bette Midler and Sarah Paulson performing over Zoom in their own homes. Other topics include: the odd jobs he worked when he first came to NYC, how he's kept going through all of the ups and downs of a creative career, making deals with God to get laughs from the audience during his early playwrighting days and how his premier magazine alter ego Libby Gelman-Waxner once fielded a sincere marriage proposal from a besotted reader. Dennis is joined via Zoom by one of his literary heroes, author, screenwriter and playwright Paul Rudnick, to discuss Paul's new novel What is Wrong With You?, which is about an offbeat assortment of gay and straight characters whose lives and lovelives collide at the destination wedding of a tech billionaire on the billionaire's private island. Paul talks about the stranger whose despondent blog post provided the spark of the book. He also talks about the straight personal trainer-gay client friendship that is at the heart of the book, why he chose to make the billionaire character way more redeemable than our world's current crop of tech billionaires and how he doesn't outline his novels, preferring to let "the characters do the driving." He also discusses his career as a screenwriter, penning scripts for hit films like Adams Family Values, In and Out, Jeffrey and Sister Act, which had such a fraught development process that he chose not to have his name taken off the movie. Other topics include: his decades-long friendship with Tony award-winning costume designer William Ivey Long, his fetishistic obsession with design elements like fabrics, luxury brands and high-end materials, how he deals with large-scale personalities like Alan Carr and Scott Rudin when they're working together, whether or not he cries when he writes and the desperation of the super rich. "I asked myself, "Where would people never notice a town full of robots? Connecticut!" We watched the infamously camp remake of "The  Stepford Wives" directed by Frank Oz with our friend Chris Gallo (Golden Girls Posters). We might be scratching our heads about the actual plot of this adaptation of the 1972 Ira Levin novel, but at a brisk ninty minutes (not including credits) do we really care? This cast is more full of gay icons than the  Palm Springs Walk of Fame - powerhouse actresses like Bette Midler and Glenn Close absolutely knock these Paul Rudnick one-liners out of the park and they make just about any plot holes disappear. Nicole Kidman leads our cast as a disgraced TV exec exiled to Stepford Connecticut where the titular wives are a little too good to be true. Bette Midler is in top form playing an ultra liberal Stepford newbie getting into Scooby Gang shenanigans with Nic and Roger Bart as the gay soon to be "Stepford Husband". The would-be robotic antics of the wives are played for camp and Glenn Close is really killing it as the over the top alpha wife. The alleged script re-writes, on set clashes between actors and Oz and the general unevenness of the plot take their toll, but the women really carry this one and we could watch Glenn and Faith Hill Do-Si-Do with smoke coming out of their ears all day. Don't think too hard about this one - just let the microchips take over and enjoy the show.  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Matt and Laci are mysteriously missing, so this episode is brought to you by replacement hosts Sister Anastasia Killian and Friar Jacob Aloysius Clement, who have the required expertise to talk you through the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg vehicle Sister Act. Is it an accurate portrayal of convent life? Do nuns really have this much fun?   Anyway, the show has lots of praise for this frankly delightful nun comedy. Obviously Whoopi is a megastar here, but how wonderful is Maggie Smith? Honestly, all of these nuns are terrific, they should star in remakes of other movies. Like, wouldn't it be great to see Nuns in Wonderland, or The Nuns and the Chocolate Factory, or Nun Transformers: Age of Extinction?   Prayers up for Laci and Matt, who we haven't heard from since all that unpleasantness in Reno.   Next week: Mad Max 2 (we Americans know it as The Road Warrior)   Want to watch this episode? Based upon a popular off-Broadway stage play performed in the early '90s, this sweet-natured but raunchy romantic comedy was one of the first of its kind when it came out in the mid '90's: it focused on a budding romance between two gay men including the titular protagonist Jeffrey played by Steven Weber who then was best known as the star of the popular network sitcom, "Wings."  We follow Jeffrey on a journey of self-discovery amid his struggle to be comfortable building a new connection during the Age of AIDS....and yet most of this played for laughs thanks to an unending stream of comic vignettes written by Paul Rudnick, adapting his own stage show for the screen.  Michael T. Weiss co-stars as the subject of Jeffrey's affections along with Patrick Stewart and Bryan Batt.  Also included among the extensive stacked cast are Sigourney Weaver, Nathan Lane, and Kathy Najimy.  Just in time for the kick-off of Pride Month, it's time to revisit this groundbreaking rom-com directed by Christopher Ashley! Host: Geoff Gershon  Producer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

To mirth, to merriment, to manslaughter! What defines a loving family? Is is the rosy-cheeked cheery-faced privileged bullies at Camp Chippewa, or is it The Addams Family? Pause for thought. The answer is, and always will be, The Addams Family's honest depiction of love and acceptance. This is not only on full display once again in Addams Family Values, but includes a clear message from writer Paul Rudnick on America's republican views on "family values", and how that is always code for exclusion and hatred. Addams Family Values is timeless; a perfect Thanksgiving movie, a perfect Halloween movie, and the perfect depiction of a familial love that can be any race, any sexuality, any belief and any gender. And it adds an iconic Joan Cusack performance to the mix, just in case you were wanting more. "But Debbie... PASTELS?" I would love to hear your thoughts on Addams Family Values ! GET IN TOUCH.... Episode 23 of READING MCCARTHY brings us a great discussion with actor and audiobook narrator Richard Poe.  Poe is known to McCarthy fans as the audiobook narrator of McCarthy's masterwork Blood Meridian.  Richard Poe has been a professional actor since 1970, when he left the army and was soon drafted into the chorus of William Ball's production of Oedipus Rex at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Later that year he was cast as Rosencrantz in a production of Hamlet starring the 73-year-old Dame Judith Anderson, touring all the major theaters in America, including Carnegie Hall. He then played a variety of roles in many regional theaters before coming to New York in 1985. He has since appeared in thirteen Broadway shows, including the 1988 Best Play Tony Award winning M. Butterfly, 1992 Best Play Nominee Our Country's Good, 2006 Best Musical Revival Winner The Pajama Game, and the 2007 Best Play Revival Winner Journey's End. He created the roles of Father Dan (among others) in Paul Rudnick's groundbreaking comedy Jeffrey, and Leonard in Christopher Durang's Why Torture Is Wrong…And The People Who Love Them. Recently he returned to The American Conservatory Theater, where it all started, and created the role of Edgar Halcyon in the new musical, Tales Of the City, receiving a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical from the Bay Area Critics Association.  Additionally, Richard has had featured roles in several films, including Born on the Fourth of July, Presumed Innocent, Transamerica, Speechless, Burn After Reading, and Delivery Man.  For his performance as Roy in Teresa is a Mother he was named Best Actor in the 2012 New York City Independent Film Festival. Playwright, novelist, and screenwriter Paul Rudnick is one of the most celebrated humorists of his generation. From his 1993 breakout off-Broadway hit play, Jeffrey to Broadway hits like I Hate Hamlet and screenplays for films like In and Out, Addams Family Values and Sister Act, Paul is a master of not just the quippy one-liner but also deeply realized characters and relatable, if often absurd situations. He's also been a regular contributor to The New Yorker for decades and is the author of several books, mostly recently the novel Playing the Palace, which is about a gay relationship between a young New York party planner and an imagined version of the Prince of Wales. Paul spoke with Meghan about gay subject matter in his work over time, his fascination with the British royal family, his latest project for HBO and his feelings about the ever shifting battle lines of the new wars. They also talked about growing up in New Jersey, which is its own kind of culture war.        Guest Bio: Paul Rudnick is a novelist, playwright, essayist and screenwriter. His Obie award winning plays have been produced both on and off Broadway and around the world, and include I Hate Hamlet, Jeffery, and The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told.  His screenplays include Addams Family Values, In and Out and Sister and his many book include Social Disease, I'll Take It and, most recently, Playing the Palace.

Playwright, screenwriter and novelist Paul Rudnick's latest novel, “Playing the Palace,” is the story of a gay man living in New York who falls in love with a gay Prince of Wales, and what ensues. His recent film, “Coastal Elites,” with Bette Midler, Dan Levy and others, is a contemporary account of life during the first half of 2020 when the awfulness of Donald Trump met the awfulness of the Covid-19 pandemic, seen as five separate monologues. Paul Rudnick has a long career as a playwright, with such plays as “Jeffrey,” his view of the AIDS epidemic and how an HIV-negative man deals with the crisis, “I Hate Hamlet,” and “The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told.” His screenplays include “Addams Family Values,” “In and Out,” and “Sister Act.” He is currently working on a musical version of “The Devil Wears Prada,” based on the screenplay, for which he was one of several script doctors. Paul Rudnick is also the author of film reviews by Libby Waxman-Gellmer, which have appeared in both Premiere Magazine and The New Yorker.
