Rupert is the creative force behind Horse Boy, Rowan is his mentor, teacher and muse. Together all aspects of Horse Boy begin and from there the wider team helps to develop each aspect.Rupert Isaacson was born in 1967 in London to a South African mother and Zimbabwean father, and grew up half in London, half on a remote horse farm in the British countryside and also with Africa looming large in his life. Coming from a family of pioneers and adventurers – Russian Jews who went to Africa on his father's side, British, Dutch and mixed race settlers on his mother's side – Rupert's grandparents were journalists, war correspondents, cattle ranchers and artists. His father is an architect and his mother a sculptor. So making your own destiny is something he grew up with. A journalist for the British and American press from the early 1990s (Daily and Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Independent on Sunday, Esquire, National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveller – among others), he has also published several guidebooks to Africa and India, and is he author of three non-fictional memoirs: The Healing Land (a New York Times Notable Book), which tells the story of his family in Africa, and of his own time spent living with the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert; The Horse Boy (a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller), which tells the story of his journey across Mongolia on horseback with his autistic son Rowan; and The Long Ride Home, which tells of the three subsequent healing journeys he and his son made to Africa, Australia and the Navajo Reservation, as well as his discovery of how horses can help autism and special needs in general.Rupert also runs the Horse Boy Foundation, from his New Trails ranch near Austin, Texas, which offers services to autism families, and helps direct several satellite centers offering similar services in North America and Europe. In partnership with Iliane Lorenz he also teaches Horse Boy Method, Horse Boy Learning (a homeschool technique aimed at autism, ADD and ADHD families among others), and other kinetic learning techniques, along with Stress Free Dressage, a way of introducing riders to the higher levels of equitation without being screamed at(!).A successful documentary filmmaker – The Horse Boy and Endangerous – and write and conceiver of reality TV shows (The Quest – which aired on ABC in 2014 – was his original concept and he helped produce the show), and in addition his mainstream Hollywood projects include The Horse Boy feature film and The Goth Lords.A career in human rights runs parallel to all this. In 2004 he founded the Indigenous Land Rights Fund, which helps hunting and gathering tribes gain legal title to their ancestral land and which helped the Bushmen of Botswana win the largest land claim in African history in 2006 – as a result of which he is now banned from Botswana (!).Finally there is his first love – horses both cross country riding, and classical dressage (he works closely with the Valenca Family in Portugal and studies with Christian Bachinger of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna). A small time breeder of Lusitano horses, Rupert relaxes by reading historical novels, planting trees and drinking beer, especially IPAs. He quite likes wine too. I find guests for Behind the Shot in a number of ways. Sometimes it's a referral from a friend, sometimes it's a cold email I send after seeing an image I just need to know more about, and now and then it's through a photographer's PR company. Regardless of how I find them, more often than not I end up being introduced to an amazing artist I wasn't familiar with beforehand. That is the case today. Jiří Lízler was brought to my attention by the folks over at Wonderful Machine, a company I think of as a PR firm, but that describes itself as "an art production agency with a network of 559 photographers in 44 countries". Whatever you see them as, they have a pool of talent that includes some of the best of the best, and they've brought me awesome guest ideas in the past. When they brought Jiří up to me two things jumped out... one was that I had never, that I recall, had an architectural shot on the show before, and the other was that Jiří's work is insanely good. I am so glad this show worked out. If, like me, you were not familiar with Jiří Lízler, let me introduce you... Jiri is a renowned Award-Winning commercial photographer from the Czech Republic, with a portfolio that features luxury hotels and high-end residential interiors. His work has been featured in international media fixtures like Conde Nast Traveller, The Telegraph, Forbes, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, The Times, Archilovers and more. From a clientele perspective, I am not sure you will find bigger names, with clients that include Microsoft, McDonald's, Chanel, Warner Bros Discovery, St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, Six Senses, The Luxury Collection, and Hyatt. As I am writing this, I have the Tear Sheets page of his website in front of me, and wow. Jiri's work is truly fantastic. Join Czech based commercial photographer Jiří Lízler and me as we discuss his world of photographing hotels & resorts, travel & tourism, architecture and interiors, and more, while taking a deep dive into his photo of the pool at the Corinthia Hotel Prague, on this Behind the Shot. Sophie Morgan is a TV presenter, Conde Nast Traveller columnist and disability advocate. When she was 18, on the night she received her A level results, Sophie crashed her car, and was left instantly paralysed from the chest down. Everything she had dreamed for her life was instantly forgotten and her journey to rediscover herself and build a different life began. “I want to go to some extraordinary places, meet some extraordinary people and do some extraordinary things", she wrote from her hospital bed the day she was discharged. But as a recently injured paraplegic woman, she would go on to face barriers as complex and nuanced as her impairment itself. In her words: “When it comes to travel, total satisfaction can be hard – if not impossible – for disabled people to find.” Sophie first appeared in BBC Two's show Beyond Boundaries which followed 11 disabled people on a 220-mile trek across Nicaragua, alongside another previous podcast guest, Amar Latif. After that, her career on TV grew, and she became one of the first female wheelchair users globally to host on TV, playing a part in transforming the representation of disability on screen, as the lead presenter on Channel 4's broadcast of the Summer Paralympics, fronting her own prime-time travel series, documentaries as well as being a regular panelist for ITV's Loose Women. She's currently spearheading the global disability rights campaign Rights On Flights which has taken her to the White House to meet the President, and we talk a lot on today's episode about accessible travel and ableism - it's an issue that has been hugely overlooked in the travel sphere for too long, and hearing Sophie's experiences as a wheelchair user, on planes in particular, but within travel more broadly, really opened my eyes to the significant change that needs to take place to make travel accessible for everyone. Having said that, Sophie has been travelling literally non-stop for the last year, I mention it at the start of the episode all the places and adventures that she's been on recently, so not only will today's episode open your eyes to things you may not have thought of before - it will also fuel your wanderlust for your own future adventures. Welcome to this bonus episode of The Travel Diaries podcast, where we are going to be talking about some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring national parks here in the UK. We're joined by friend of the podcast, former guest on Season 3, Juliet Kinsman, who is the Sustainability Editor of Conde Nast Traveller magazine, the author of The Green Edit: Easy Tips for the Eco-Friendly Traveller and an aficionado of the national parks of the UK. Today's episode is brought to you in partnership with BMW and National Park UK's Recharge in Nature Project, an initiative to support nature restoration, biodiversity, wellbeing as well as access - the project is enhancing the electric vehicle charging infrastructure around our national parks to make it that bit easier to use an electric car when exploring. Often they are so vast, so remote and so rural that if you're driving an electric car you might be anxious about when you'd next able to charge it. From the soaring mountains and serene lakes of the Lake District National Park to the rugged moorlands and rolling hills of the Cairngorms National Park and the wild horses of the New Forest, by uncovering Juliet's national parks travel diaries we'll not only take a closer look at what makes these parks so special, we'll also explore how we can ensure their protection for generations to come.So grab your your binoculars, your walking boots, and your sense of adventure, and let's get started as we delve into the National Parks of the UK! Women make 85% of travel decisions, so why are we not seen in 85% of travel marketing? What is shown to us when it comes to the "traveling woman"? Two narratives: either we're having a life-changing transformation and devouring pasta OR we're getting kidnapped and in fear for our lives. It's never somewhere in between. As the founder of leading women's travel community, Wanderful, and creator of an incredible series of events, festivals, and activities for women travelers worldwide, I KNOW there is more to women traveling than what — and who — is represented in the movies or seen on commercials. So, I'm going to talk about it with some of the most phenomenal influencers, CEOs and changemakers in travel and hospitality around the world. Come buckle up and be my audio travel companion. I'm Beth Santos and this is 85 Percent.
“Kopi Dulu,” means “coffee first” in Indonesian–a common phrase from Indonesians who are happy to have coffee anywhere, anytime and with anyone. At least, that was Mark Eveleigh's experience, as a travel writer and reporter, traveling across the country's many islands. The phrase gives us the title of his latest book: Kopi Dulu: Caffeine-Fuelled Travels Through Indonesia (Penguin Southeast Asia, 2022). Mark travels through Indonesia's cities and villages, jungles and seas, sharing his experience with the country's nature, history, and possibility for adventure. In this interview, Mark joins the show to share his stories on islands like Java, Sumatra, and Borneo, and why it's important to pay attention to this large Southeast Asian country. Mark Eveleigh is a travel writer and photographer whose work has, over 25 years, graced the pages of some of the world's most prestigious travel titles. Today we get to talk with Sahara Rose, and that is exactly what she did. Sahara is a Wellness Travel Coach and the Founder of The Travel Coach Network. After traveling to 84 countries solo, Sahara saw voids and shortages in the tourism industry which led to her creating the world's very first platform for certified travel coaches around the world. Sahara is a TEDx speaker, published author, global speaker, and has been seen in 120+ media outlets for her expertise including Forbes, Business Insider, Conde Nast Traveller, and Travel Weekly. Traveling is one of the best ways to learn more about yourself and the world around you. It allows us to explore different cultures, try new things, and gain insight into ourselves that we never knew before. My Biggest Take Aways From This Episode: Sahara Rose started her own travel coaching business to help others get the most out of their travel experiences The biggest reasons people want to travel are to get off the beaten path, have new experiences, and find purpose One of the biggest lessons that can be learned from travel is that happiness does not come from material possessions. This is evident in poor countries where the people are often some of the happiest you will ever meet. Travel coaching is a way to help people reflect on what travel means to them and how they can use it to improve their lives. The pandemic has caused many people to reevaluate their relationship with work and travel, and there is an increasing demand for remote work options that allow for more flexibility. Travel coaching is a great way to start a side gig and can be done on your own time if you are certified. It is important to understand they are not goals nor merely desires, but profound needs that underlie and motivate every choice, every belief, and every decision we make. Because they are the driving force behind any person's behavior, understanding the needs and the vehicles used to meet them, we will have a better understanding of why life is the way it is currently and more importantly, how to facilitate change. “I think identity alchemy is finding who you are at the core.” How do you identify and define yourself when you have multiple interests, multiple talents, multiple ways you see yourself interacting with the world? For Nick Onken, the answer is Identity Alchemy - the creative art of deconstructing who you are [and who you've been] so you can discover the essence that sits at your core. This episode's guest is Nick Onken - a creative alchemist who dances between the roles of photographer, hat designer, podcaster, artist, and entrepreneur. He's lived a creative life where his curiosity has guided him to shed identities and redefine himself as his work and life have shifted and evolved. In this episode, Nick and I explore the creative power we can all access - to unleash our inner genius. “Art inspires, art is the language that transcends and inspires people without language.” Nick Onken has been commissioned by top tier brands such as Nike, Coca Cola, Adidas and publishers such as Cosmopolitan, Conde Nast Traveller and Marie Claire. His portfolio of photographed personalities include Justin Bieber, Usher, Tom Hanks, Jessica Alba and Tony Robbins, to name a few. Nick also supports, and photographs for Pencils of Promise, a reputable non-profit organization using education as the most powerful tool to change the world. In this beautiful episode, Nick and I explore: What does identity alchemy mean? The power of personal brands The creative force of connecting to the energy of the moment. Creation as a tool to pull yourself into your truth. Intentionality and creating your moments. Dancing between masuline and feminine energies to let the magic flow. What it means to deconstruct and what secrets this opens up? Curiosity, exploring the world of possibilities, and creating for the pure joy of it. And more…Nick's on a mission to raise consciousness through the art he creates in the world - no matter what art form that is. He believes everyone is a creator with the ability to explore and express their inner genius - and in this episode he shows you how. “To me, feeling inspired is just an energetic frequency. The Bombay Canteen is considered as one of the most popular restaurants in the country and its food most sought out. It has been adjudged as The Best Restaurant in India in 2018 by Conde Nast Traveller and was also included in its list of 100 places in the world to eat. And as the restaurant's former Executive Chef, Thomas Zacharias' constant innovation of the Indian food became its pièce de résistance. Through his latest venture, The Locavore, Chef Zacharias is keen to create a community around our rich Indian food legacy and in the process put the spotlight back on the best (and sometimes forgotten) regional dishes and cuisines. Jamie was an Oxford-educated successful partner at a top NY-based hedge fund when at 35 years old he told his partner, "I just don't want to die and have my headstone say, "Here lies a hedge fund manager." He says it was then that he realized he was after something more soul-fulfilling, quit finance and gave himself 2 years to explore his options. Jamie pursued radio and TV with full force, even crossing the globe to create his on-camera hosting reel. In this episode, we learn how he landed many successful partnerships with Conde Nast Traveller, TD Ameritrade, and more that focus on travel and financial education. And Jamie shares how he's simultaneously used his innate speaking ability to help raise millions of dollars for non-profits as a charity auctioneer while supporting an extensive community project in Cuba.
