In this episode your host, and favorite angler :) George Scocca does a deep dive so to speak into the issues we're seeing with the Jewel of the East End the Peconic Bay Scallop. Did you know that the Peconic Bay Scallop is the New York State shell?  Did you know that this amazing creature can live for over 20 years? Did you know that these tasty little morsels are filter feeders and play an important role in the eco system of our bays?George interviews Dr. Stephen Tettelbach Shellfish Ecologist/Professor Emeritus of Biology about the current state of the Peconic Bay Scallop and what is believed to be causing the die-off.There is a lot of history behind the Peconic Bay Scallop and it is part of the overall fabric of the beautiful body of water. In the 20's mostly women would become "openers" and "earn $3 a day and still have time to get home to cook dinner."They also get into the collapse of the Long Island Lobster fishery as well as the effects of the taking over of the Asian crab. This is one of a series we will be doing over the coming months on Our Changing Waters. Please join us for an interesting and informative show. Send any questions you may have to george@nyangler.com or stop by newyorkfishingpodcast.com and leave a voice message that will be played on a future show.

For the fourth year in a row, researchers who monitor the bay scallop population in the Peconic Estuary say there are clear signs of a massive die-off of the valuable shellfish unfolding on local bay bottoms. Biologists from the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program say that they have seen almost 100 percent mortality of adult bay scallops at monitoring sites in Northwest Harbor and Orient Harbor. A parasite is likely contributing to the scallops' demise, but record-high water temperatures in the bays caused by climate change are also adding to the stresses the dwindling population faces. Senior reporter Michael Wright joins the editors on the podcast this week to discuss the plight of Peconic bay scallops and what's being done in an effort to reverse the trend.

Had a great time meeting up with Matt Ketchum, an oyster farmer from the North Fork of Long Island. Matt owns and operates Peconic Gold Oysters which has been operating since 2013 on a 10 acre underwater plot. Matt: "The nearby Peconic River provides a unique input of minerals. It is believed that the iron supplied by the river and the algae that bloom in the shallow waters combine to produce the gold color apparent on the oysters' shells throughout the growing season. They've noticed that an edible red algae, Gracillaria (seaweed salad) also thrives here. It is this combination of environmental factors acting in perfect harmony that combine perfectly to make for a cool, crisp, sweet flavor, and creamy texture, with a slightly metallic and smoky finish."In addition to selling whole oysters, Peconic also sells freshly shucked oysters to go. Their farm stand is open every day and is set up for no-touch, curb side service. In addition, Matt has also collaborated with several business to produce oyster kimchi, oyster quiche and plans on working with a local brewery to produce an oyster beer.We wrapped up the session discussing food and beverage pairings. Peconic loves to pair their oysters with wines from local vineyards. In particular, a cold, crisp Chenin Blanc. We met up with Sterling from Mama Roux who crafts "Cest Bon" a White Negroni made in collaboration with The Spirits Lab. We can't wait to try Peconic oysters matched up with the White Negroni!

Hot, sunny weather seems to finally be here to stay. That means zucchini and tomatoes should be here, too, right? Well, not quite. This spring has been long and cool, particularly compared to last year, according to area farmers. “Edible, right now? Today? Nothing yet,” said Long Island farmer Joe  Barszczewski. “We didn’t have a spring. It looks like we’ve gone from winter now leaning toward summer. And everything is a little bit behind, probably two weeks.” Barszczewski grows 20 acres of vegetables on the East End. That’s just enough to supply his farm stand on Albertson Lane in Greenport. Right now, the stand is mostly stocked with seedlings. That’ll change soon. “With this warm weather, you can catch up quick,” he said. While New York City residents seemed to get rain nearly every other day this spring, Barszczewski said his fields got just enough to avoid having to irrigate. Barszczewski said the cooler weather helps prevent farmers planting too soon. Gail Hepworth of Hepworth Farms in Milton, New York, agreed. She grows 182 varieties of vegetables and supplies the Park Slope Food Co-Op. She said cooler weather helps enforce the guideline of only planting after May 15 in this growing zone. “A lot of times when it’s warm weather like last year, we were biting at the bit to get out there because it just seemed like everything was ready for us,” Hepworth said. “And that’s very dangerous because before May 15 there can be a frost.” An unexpected frost can have farmers starting all over. One way to help ensure crops are available regardless of weather conditions is to rely on greenhouses, which is what Sang Lee Farms in Peconic, Long Island, have been doing. Will Lee said that they’re currently harvesting raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries, as well as asparagus, lettuces, sugar snap peas, and radishes. Soon, they’ll start planting in the fields. Nevia No of Bodhitree Farm is harvesting strawberries from her fields at Bodhitree Farm in the Pemberton Township of New Jersey. She says her strawberry season is nearly over, but that farmers further north will take over where her stock leaves off. Unlike the Eastern End of Long Island, No said that the southern part of New Jersey got just enough rain. “We did get a sufficient amount of water,” she said. “We didn’t really have a very long dry spell... which was a good benefit for all the greens.” No brings her produce to the Union Square farmers market on Wednesdays and Fridays. On Saturdays, Bodhitree Farm has stands at the Abingdon and Greenpoint McCarren Park markets. Right now, she is harvesting English shell peas, leafy greens, and summer radishes. The Italian leafy green spigarello, which tastes like broccoli, did particularly well this year, and No said to look forward to fava beans showing up in the next few weeks, too.
