Sometimes, you can see a stickup coming a mile off. Other times, they come in the dressing of a movie with lots of awards and credibility. But Maff might've just played a blinder here in The Year of the Stichup. Naked Lunch (1991) was a challenging and experimental adaptation of William S. Burroughs' novel, helmed by Canadian director David Cronenberg. The film's production was marked by its complex narrative and the integration of surreal, often disturbing imagery, which reflected Burroughs' unorthodox storytelling style. Cronenberg, known for his work in body horror, worked closely with the cast, including Peter Weller, who portrayed the lead role of William Lee, to create a psychological and disorienting atmosphere. Filming took place in various locations, including Toronto, where the filmmakers utilized practical effects and innovative set designs to create the film's nightmarish world. The production team also employed a mixture of animation and special effects to bring Burroughs' hallucinatory visions to life, making Naked Lunch a visually striking, albeit polarizing, adaptation of the cult novel. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where reality is blurred and paranoia runs deep, Naked Lunch follows William Lee, a writer who becomes entangled in a web of drugs, conspiracy, and bizarre creatures. As he tries to escape his hallucinatory nightmare, Lee finds himself in the midst of a deadly game involving corrupt agents, mysterious organizations, and a sinister plot to control the world. With his mind unraveling, Lee must navigate a twisted labyrinth of absurdity and horror, where nothing is what it seems, and the lines between fantasy and reality are dangerously thin. Prepare for a journey into madness that will leave you questioning what's real and what's not.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Justin Kuritzkes is the very talented writer behind Challengers, the Luca Guadagnino love triangle topping all sorts of end-of-year lists right now. The film is a tennis drama that declared game-set-and-match with critics and audiences alike on release in April, becoming a pop culture sensation in ways usually reserved for franchise films. Steeped in the messy wants and desires of three complicated characters, it's the sort of film that doesn't often dominate discourse. But that didn't stop Challengers becoming a phenomenon whose influence altered fashion, music, memes and more in 2024.Which for most writers would be enough achievement for one year thank you very much. But Justin's 2024 didn't end there. Queer – also directed by Guadagnino – is a William Burroughs adaptation that hit cinemas this month. The film stars Daniel Craig as William Lee – an American expatriate living in 1950s Mexico City who becomes obsessed with a younger man and goes on a quest into the jungle in search of unlocking drug-induced telepathic communication. Both films bear the hallmarks of a storyteller insistent upon bringing deeply nuanced explorations of flawed people searching for connection into multiplexes. In the double-bill episode you're about to hear, breaking down in spoiler-filled detail both acclaimed films, we discuss the overlaps between Challengers' carnal chaos and Charli XCX's Brat Summer, and what both say about this moment in the culture. We get into the tragic real-life death of Burroughs' partner, killed by the famed author in an supposed accidental shooting, that lends uncomfortable context to the story of Queer (and that Justin threaded into the movie). And you'll also hear his thoughts on whether both of these films could be a bellwether moment for movies. In a year that saw franchise after franchise struggle for critical applause and box office might, does the success of a movie like Challengers suggest that an appetite might be growing again for original stories? Now there's an exciting thought to carry into 2025.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. On today's NYFF62 podcast, we welcome director Luca Guadagnino, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, costume designer Jonathan Anderson, and cast members Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey to discuss Queer, the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd New York Film Festival, with NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim. Written in the early 1950s yet not published until 1985, William S. Burroughs's Queer has come to be considered a canonical work in the career of the Beat Generation author and a cornerstone of transgressive gay literature. In his wildly ambitious adaptation, Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, NYFF55) expertly evokes the book's post–World War II time period and cinematically translates Burroughs's iconoclasm with panache. In a transformative role, Daniel Craig immerses himself into Burroughs's alter ego William Lee, a habitual heroin user luxuriating in freedom and desiccation among a disconnected group of gay American expatriates in Mexico City in the late 1940s. When enigmatic, preppy ex-military kid Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey) catches Lee's eye, he swoons into a headlong love affair, commencing an odyssey that will take them all the way to the Ecuadorian jungle in pursuit of the ultimate high. Buoyed by go-for-broke performances from Craig and Starkey, and rollicking, unexpected supporting turns from Lesley Manville and Jason Schwartzman, Queer is a dazzling showcase for many in Guadagnino's stable of collaborators, including Challengers screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, and music composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's a film that finds Guadagnino in his most formidable, gutsiest mode yet, a universal love story featuring expressionistic flights of fancy, gratifying moments of psychedelic surrealism, and surprising tenderness. Tickets to the New York Film Festival are moving fast! Get up-to-date information on all available tickets on a daily basis by visiting filmlinc.org/tix. Queer opens in theaters on November 27, courtesy of A24.

New Podcast alert!!! https:sistersinsong.callcast.co  The sisters had the great pleasure of talking with William Lee Golden of Oakridge Boys fame and Australian Singer Songwriter Danni Stefanetti about their beautiful new collaboration “I'veGot My Heart on You” available everywhere!  Oak Ridge Boy William Lee Golden debuts as a songwriter at 85 years old with “I've Got My Heart on You,” a heartfelt duet featuring rising star Danni Stefanetti. Inspired by his son Solomon's words during his touring days, this song blends Golden's legendary status with Stefanetti's fresh talent. Golden, a Country and Gospel Hall of Famer with 5 Grammys, brings decades of experience to his first self-penned track. Stefanetti, an award-winning artist, adds her virtuoso guitar skills and contemporary flair. This collaboration offers a poignant tribute to family bonds. With Golden's rich baritone and Stefanetti's emotive vocals, “I've Got My Heart on You” promises to resonate with longtime fans and new listeners alike, showcasing the timeless power of country music toconnect generations.  William Lee Golden has long been a Renaissance man. An accomplished painter, photographer, entertainer, and member of both the Country and Gospel Music Halls of Fame, the longtime Oak Ridge Boy has enjoyed a long, very successful career. Never content to rest on his laurels, at 85, he's always stretching his creative horizons and does so yet again as the solosongwriter on his latest release “I Got My Heart on You.”   For Stefanetti, winner of the 2023 Josie Award for Female Vocalist, getting to work with one of her musical heroes was a dream come true. “He's so easy to work with and it's a bit surreal because I remember sitting backstage at the Opry watching the Oak Ridge Boys doing ‘American Made' on my first trip to Nashville,” she says with a smile. “Working with him was a real treat and this song is so special. The melody just really hit me the first time I heard it because it is really beautiful and really touching.”  Though written for his son, Stefanetti feels “I Got My Heart on You” will have universal appeal. “It could be a love song as well. It could be about a family member. It could even be something that William could dedicate to Rusty,” she says referring to Golden's eldest son, who died of a heart attack on July 1, 2024. “The song encompasses all kind of relationships. It's got such a universal appeal. I don't think William realized that when he wrote it, but you hear it different every time you listen to it.”   Check them out here:    William Lee Golden:  Website: williamleegolden.com  FB: William Lee Golden  IG: William_Lee_Golden    Danni Stefanetti:  Website: Dannistefanetti.com  FB: Danni Stefanetti  IG: Dannistefanetti  TikTok: Dannistefanettiofficial

When he meets Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), he's instantly smitten, but Allerton plays hot and cold with him. After a tentative on-again-off-again courtship, Lee persuades Allerton to go to South America with him in search of hallucinogenic drugs that will help with telepathy.
