LONDON (ICIS) The impact of the war in Ukraine has had a profound impact on commodities across the world. As energy prices have shot up, this has weighed heavily on market fundamentals in the chemicals sector, and weakened fertilizers production in Europe, as well as hampering supply chains around the world. In turn, global agriculture has had to adapt to the same challenges, and producers need to engage with factors impacting the rest of the value chain for indication of what is to come.In this podcast, Senior Reporter for Europe Morgan Condon and Senior Energy Markets Reporter Aura Sabadus talk to Deputy Managing Editor for Fertilizers Deepika Thapliyal and AgSolutions Commercial Products Manager Scott Cogdill about what expectations look like in 2023 and highlight the parallels between the sectors.

This episode is sponsored by Roofstock onChainThis is a story of how something can appear to be what it is not. It's a tale of a jarring contrast between the image the world had of Sam Bankman-Fried before FTX's meltdown pushed the crypto world into a nauseating tailspin and the reality of a wildly mismanaged multibillion-dollar empire with what Bankman-Fried's appointed successor described as an “unprecedented” failure of accounting, oversight and discipline. Before Ian Allison's Nov. 2 CoinDesk scoop on FTX sister company Alameda Research's suspect balance sheet, Bankman-Fried was seen as a philanthropic, well-connected, celebrity-hobnobbing, marketing-savvy leader, a wunderkind who made crypto respectable. Two weeks later, he is viewed as a laughing stock, a suspected criminal, an irresponsible, wildly underqualified, selfish child who has destroyed the livelihoods of tens of thousands. Wow. What a difference two weeks make!In this episode of Money Reimagined, host Michael Casey chats with two CoinDesk colleagues who've delved deeply into the SBF story: Deputy Managing Editor for Companies coverage Tracy Wang and Managing Editor for Global Policy and Regulation, Nikhilesh De. Together they dig into how the erstwhile FTX CEO could have misled the world to such a degree. They explore Bankman-Fried's journey, how it begins with his adherence to the principles of effective altruism, a stated desire to get as rich as possible to do maximum good, and how it all seems to fall apart as FTX gets bigger. They discuss how his philanthropy, political donations, and marketing efforts hid the dark reality underneath and delve into what needs to happen, at the community level and in regulation, to protect people falling from such distortions in the future. As a leader, transparency can be a tricky topic to navigate. It's often framed as an end-goal -- an inherent good that all leaders should aspire to -- but full transparency just isn't possible in most industries. So, how should leaders think about transparency in the workplace? How can they use it to motivate and inspire their teams? When should they share, and why? In this episode, host Gautam Mukunda speaks with GitLab's co-founder and CEO Sid Sijbrandij and the Deputy Managing Editor of the New York Times Rebecca Blumenstein about how being intentional with transparency can result in authenticity, honesty and openness in workplace culture. “Companies that are more forthcoming about their challenges and their problems generally fare much better.” — Rebecca Blumenstein “What's really important is that we're transparent by default. So, things are public by default unless we have a good reason not to do that.” — Sid Sijbrandij Follow @GMukunda on Twitter or email us at WorldReimagined@nasdaq.com For more information on this episode's guest please visit: Nasdaq.com/world-reimagined-podcast Learn more about TDAmeritrade: https://www.tdameritrade.com/ https://www.tdameritrade.com/tools-and-platforms/trader-offering.html
In this episode, I sit down to chat with Alan Murray about his latest book, Tomorrow's Capitalist: My Search for the Soul of Business, which reveals, according to the book description, how corporate CEOs—the ultimate pragmatists—realized that they could lose their “operating license” unless they tackle the fundamental issues of our time: climate, diversity and inclusion, and inequality and workforce opportunity. Responding to their employees and customers who are demanding corporate change, they have taken the lead in establishing the bold new principles of stakeholder capitalism, ensuring that for the first time in more than a half a century it is not just shareholders who have a say in how corporations are run. Alan Murray is CEO of Fortune Media, and writer of the popular daily newsletter, the Fortune CEO Daily. A career journalist, prior to joining Fortune in 2015, Murray was President of Pew Research Center, and had a long career at the Wall Street Journal serving as Deputy Managing Editor, Executive Editor Online, Washington Bureau Chief, and author of the Political Capital and Business columns. Murry also served as Washington bureau chief for CNBC, and as cohost of the nightly show Capital Report. In this episode we discuss: The impact of the Great Resignation on leadership The power of shareholder activism The surprising acceleration caused by the global pandemic The shift to companies publicly standing up for their values Key Takeaways: As Alan mentioned, companies have gone from physical assets making up 80% of the market value for S&P 500 companies in 1975 to intangible assets making up 80% of the market value today (HBR). This makes sense. Taking a step back, the industrial revolution brought with it the assembly line, the industrial worker, and employees as “resources”. Output was linear and easy to measure. Those linear, repeatable tasks are now often done by technology. The value of companies in the knowledge age comes from their intangible assets: Their employees, and their employees showing up as humans performing complicated—nonlinear—tasks like creativity, innovation, and empathy. This is a dramatic shift. From personal experience, I can honestly say that early in my career I was probably only 10% human at work and 90% robot, focused on efficiency since that was what was rewarded and expected of me. Thankfully we're entering a new age, and company cultures are catching on to what environments foster the best in their people, and an understanding that having employees bring their whole self to work is what will make their company great. Change takes time. While the pandemic provided one silver lining, which is the great acceleration of the stakeholder capitalism movement and bringing humanity into the core of business, figuring out how to do this right, getting the right metrics and supporting structures in place, will take time. Progress is always a continually evolving journey of learning what works, what doesn't, and how to do better. The amazing opportunity, and invitation, businesses have been given to identify their purpose, define their values, bring meaning into their business strategy, and then find ways to use their voice, their power, and their business model to create a world that brings their purpose and values to life. It's been ten years since the writer and activist Laura Bates founded the Everyday Sexism project, giving a platform to thousands of women to document their everyday experiences of sexism, harassment and assault. In her new book, ‘Fix the System Not the Women' she argues we have wasted decades telling women and girls how to fix things, how to fix themselves, how to stay safe, it hasn't worked because women were never the problem in the first place. She is calling for systematic reform of our key institutions and societal systems that she says are failing to protect women. Spanish women with severe Menstrual symptoms could be entitled to three days of leave a month - extended to five in some circumstances - if a draft bill going through the Spanish parliament is approved. It would make it the first legal entitlement of its kind in Europe. The bill is part of a package of reforms that could also overturn laws passed by the previous government, including 16 and 17 year old girls no longer needing parental consent to have an abortion. We're departing from the "norms" of the podcast and dedicating this episode to a discussion surrounding WeCrashed, the Apple TV+ miniseries that depicts the rise and fall of WeWork and its embattled CEO and co-founder Adam Neumann (played by Jared Leto). The series also stars Anne Hathaway as his wife Rebekah Paltrow Neumann. The show has all the themes worthy of a discussion on a money podcast: the abuse of power, privilege and wealth, our relationship to money and the differences between female and male entrepreneurs. (Warning: there are spoilers.) Joining the show to discuss WeCrashed with Farnoosh: Kate Dailey, Deputy Managing Editor for Features at the Philadelphia Inquirer (Fun Fact: Farnoosh and Kate are best friends and roommates at Penn State) and Kate Sullivan, Host and Creator of To Dine For, a podcast and PBS series where she interviews top CEOs, visionaries and entrepreneurs like Howard Schulz, Gloria Estefan and Jon Bon Jovi.
