He is a graduate of Harborfields High School, class of 1974. A journalism graduate of George Washington University, Dawidziak has worked as a theater, film and television critic since 1979. He has been the television critic for The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio, since 1999. A member of the Television Critics Association's board of directors for five years, he has won five Cleveland Press Club awards for entertainment writing, as well as a Society of Professional Journalists award for coverage of minority issues. In addition to Horton Foote's The Shape of the River: The Lost Teleplay About Mark Twain, he assembled Mark Twain's thoughts on writing and the writing process for Mark My Words: Mark Twain on Writing. He also teamed with noted Twain scholar R. Kent Rasmussen for the chapter Mark Twain on the Screen published in A Companion to Mark Twain. He has twice been the visiting Twain scholar giving the Trouble Begins at Eight lecture at Elmira College's Center for Mark Twain Studies. He has presented academic papers at four consecutive State of Mark Twain Studies conferences: on The Shape of the River in 2001; on the many similarities between Twain and Charles Dickens in 2005; on the importance of Hal Holbrook's one-man show, Mark Twain Tonight!, in 2009; and on director-producer Will Vinton's Claymation film The Adventures of Mark Twain in 2013. He also has been the featured speaker at the Mark Twain Museum in Buffalo and the keynote speaker at the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read initiatives devoted to Mark Twain. Two Twain-centric books appeared in 2015: Mark Twain in Ohio from Rod Serling Books and Mark Twain's Guide to Diet, Exercise, Beauty, Fashion, Investment, Romance, Health and Happiness from Prospect Park Books. My dad had an office in the house, but then built one in the back yard so he could find some peace to write by getting away from my sister, me and our menagerie of dogs, cats and even two pet rats. Always preferring the East Coast, the change of seasons and the slower pace of small college towns, I remained in upstate New York to attend college. First Alfred University and then transferring to Elmira College where I earned a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in English. Upon graduation I substitute taught, worked at a school for children with special needs, and then was a preschool teacher at Cornell University's Early Childhood Program & Cooperative Nursery School. I have always loved writing. If my dad liked my writing he said so. Susan Segal was driving her daughter to school one day when a city bus had to swerve into her BMW in order to miss a runaway truck.  Her daughter, Alyce, stepped out of the impossible wreckage and was miraculously unscathed. You are not going to believe this one.  Satellite Sister Lian Dolan went to Washington and got locked down in the Capitol Building.   On today's show, Lian tells Julie and Liz all about her long-awaited, momentous trip to Washington with her son Colin.  The reason for her visit was the ceremony to honor the International Women of Courage at the State Department.  Lian was invited to the event as part of her work for NGO American Women for International Understanding.   Much advance planning took place.  Who knew that spring break/cherry blossom season is a very popular time in town?  Not Lian!   Planes. Hotels. Reservations for tours of the Capitol and the White House.  She got it all locked in.  But then who would have guessed that Lian and Colin would be in the Capitol Building during the incident with the shooter on Tuesday.  They got hustled into a lockdown, held by the Capitol Police and finally released, along with thousands of others.  One problem:  their phones has be taken by the police and they had just one flimsy claim check to get them back.  That took days.  But meanwhile, she and Colin had an amazing day at Foggy Bottom.  The personal stories of the Women of Courage were very moving. Secretary of State John Kerry and Vice President Joe Biden spoke.  Check of the photo. After Lian's report, Julie has a neighbor issue that she needs some advice on.  Is this request appropriate or too much? Liz has an update on her Aqua Zumba experiment.  She's also got a review of her night at the theatre with Sheila.  They went to see Women Laughing Alone With Salad at the Kirk Douglas. Described as a "gender-bending comedy vinaigrette, inviting everyone to savor this complex recipe of desire and shame." Sheila laughed so loudly that the women next to her asked her to be quiet!!
