This was one of our most listened-to conversations of the past year. If you missed it the first time, here's your second chance. She moderated the fly debate. She interviewed Stephen Hawking. She covered 12 presidential campaigns and sat down with the last 10 presidents. And she spent years inside Queen Elizabeth's extraordinary vantage point on American democracy — one that no American journalist could ever fully replicate. Two minutes. Real impact. Leave a review: lovethepodcast.com/politicsandreligion Susan Page, Washington Bureau Chief of USA TODAY, joins Corey to discuss her latest book, The Queen and Her Presidents: a sweeping account of Queen Elizabeth II's relationships with every American president from Truman to Biden. But this conversation goes well beyond the book. Susan reflects on a career that began in a converted car dealership on Long Island, the lessons she learned covering her first president (and how badly she blew it), what it really takes to develop sources across decades of political reporting, and why — from a Kansas girl's perspective — the people on both sides of our divide love America more than we give them credit for. But the goal is to inform the conversation, not control it. The worst thing an interviewer can do, she says, is fail to listen to the answer. Great sourcing is built on respect and fairness, not on pulling punches. Rich Bond, the young Long Island operative she profiled in 1979, became a top Republican official and a reliable source for decades — not because she went easy on him, but because he trusted her to be fair. She would not have softened a story about him, and he knew it. Books and daily journalism use the same muscle, differently. The skills transfer directly — the sourcing, the curiosity, the nose for a good detail — but the bar is higher and the time horizon is longer. Writing a book means people are paying thirty dollars and spending real time. You owe them something they couldn't get from clicking a link. The best research rewards patience. Sifting through archival files at eight presidential libraries and the National Archives in Britain yielded moments that almost nobody else has read. The sarcastic cables British ambassadors sent back about LBJ as vice president confirmed everything LBJ already suspected they thought of him. They love America. Whether she's at a No Kings rally or a MAGA rally, Susan hears the same thing: people who care deeply, who revere the Constitution, who think they're fighting for the country. The polarization isn't about love of country — it's about a failure to extend basic respect across the divide. Queen Elizabeth perfected the art of getting people to talk. Her small talk strategy — chatter briefly, then turn the question back — was especially effective with men, who, as Susan notes diplomatically, tend to enjoy talking about themselves. Pride Month keeps the celebration moving on We Drink & We Watch Things as we transition from the quiet, burning embers of 18th-century France to the bright, neon-soaked drag capital of South Beach. For our "G" selection in the lineup, we are throwing it back to 1996 for Mike Nichols and Elaine May's sublime masterclass in comedic farce: The Birdcage. Mix yourself something wonderfully refreshing - perhaps Lemar's "Straight" Bourbon - and get ready for a family dinner where absolutely nothing goes according to plan. This week, we celebrate the legendary chemistry between Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, looking at how Williams plays the perfect, anchored straight man (pun intended) to Lane's fiercely dramatic, Barbara Bush-redefining Albert. We bask in the glorious, scene-stealing supporting work of Hank Azaria as the perpetually barefoot Agador Spartacus and Gene Hackman as the ultra-conservative Senator Keeley, who unwittingly ends up in the drag escape of a lifetime. We also break down the film's incredible heart, discussing how beneath the chaotic Martha Graham choreography, the "eco-friendly" naked-boy pottery, and the frantic attempts to pass as straight, it is a deeply moving portrait of unconditional love and a radical defense of queer families. If you can instantly recite the difference between a John Wayne walk and a regular walk, or if you just want to hear us gush about the comedic genius of an Elaine May screenplay, this episode is pure joy. We're blending our adoration for this comfort-movie masterpiece with our usual casual banter, proving that when the world gets crazy, sometimes you just have to give 'em a little bit of Fosse, Fosse, Fosse! This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming up. Warm Thoughts

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2026 2:29

The 2nd Sunday in June is children's day. The following Sunday we celebrate Father's Day. A great deal of concern has been focused on our children as the dawn of a new century is fast approaching. Children who have graduated this last year in the 20th century are told that they will be shaping the next century. What a challenge for our children and our grandchildren. Many years ago, an author by the name of Dorothy Law Nolte wrote these thoughts about children and what they learn from those around them.Children learn what they live. If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with ridicule, they learn to be shy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with praise they learn to appreciate. If children live with fairness, they learn justice. If children live with security, they learn to have faith. If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. If children live with acceptance and friendship, they learn to find love in the world. Children are our teachers. They walk with us, or push us, through a process of purification to our own maturity. How can we respect and honor this gift? I am reminded of what former First Lady, Barbara Bush, stated in a graduation speech. She said, 100 years from now, it will not matter what your bank account has, or what sort of house you lived in, or the kind of car you drove. But the world may be different because you were important in the life of a child. Celebrate the gift of a child on children's day.Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea Written by Dr. Luetta G Werner. Mission: Impossible, Mørkeleg, Evita, Space Jam, Romeo + Juliet, Pusher, Phenomenon, Trainspotting og The Cable Guy. Laugh, cry, and reflect with us as Deborah Roberts shares why, in a divided world, the bonds between sisters — and the women who become like sisters — may matter more than ever. She has reported from war zones, interviewed world leaders, and earned Peabody and Emmy Awards for her journalism — but ABC News 20/20 co-anchor Deborah Roberts says her most personal story yet begins at home. This week, Deborah joins us to talk about her new book, Sisters Loved and Treasured: Stories of Unbreakable Bonds, a warmhearted celebration of one of life's most enduring relationships. In Sisters Loved and Treasured, Deborah curates a collection of conversations, meditations, and anecdotes from her own sisters, celebrity friends, and everyday people alike, who share deeply personal accounts of how their relationships as sisters shaped their lives. She writes candidly about feeling lost in a big family, the joy and strain of sibling relationships, and the heartbreak of losing two sisters. The book features more than 50 personal stories from Viola Davis, Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush, Arianna Huffington, Octavia Spencer, and many more. But sisterhood, Deborah reminds us, isn't only defined by blood. The book also explores how sisterhood transcends biological lines — and how the bonds between women friends can be just as powerful and sustaining. VYS0055 | Merry ChristMups! - The Muppet Christmas Carol - Vayse to Face with Phil Ristaino: Saturnalia 2025 - Show Notes God help us, every one! 'Tis the season of good will to all creatures and, even better, that jolly old elf, Phil Ristaino, returns to Vayse after an absence of only 4 episodes for an urgent meeting about the Muppet Christmas Carol, a film which he had never seen before researching for the episode! With Phil's help and encouragement Hine and Buckley joyously delve into a film which has been a Vayse favourite for over 3 decades, discussing the sad and sudden demise of the genius that was Jim Henson, the connections between the muppets and spirituality, why the Muppet Christmas Carol is one of the best Christmas movies, if not one of the best movies ever made, how the spirit of Jim Henson visited his successor to the voice of Kermit... and how the Muppets got the best performance of his career out of Michael Caine (recorded 4 December 2025). 398 9/11 from the Air: NYPD Chief Pilot Ken Solosky Remembers + GA News

Aviation News Talk podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2025 73:54

Max Trescott talks with Ken Solosky, the NYPD's Chief Pilot on 9/11, about his experiences managing helicopter operations on one of the most catastrophic days in American history. Though Ken wasn't flying at the moment of the attacks, he was on the ground coordinating the NYPD's aviation response. He recounts how what began as a seemingly routine aircraft accident quickly escalated into a full-blown national emergency. The aviation unit scrambled a standard rescue package—Bell 412s with divers and crew chiefs, and patrol helicopters—only to face total communication breakdowns. Cell service and landlines failed, radio channels were overloaded, and misinformation, including reports of enemy fighter jets, created unprecedented confusion. Ken recalls the surreal moment of watching the second plane hit the South Tower live on TV and initially being unable to process the reality. He explains why rooftop rescues weren't feasible—smoke obscured visibility, doors were locked or inaccessible, and the risk of engine flameout in the intense heat made the mission too dangerous. Still, he and his team documented the scene extensively and continued daily aerial photography for nearly a year afterward. Ken describes how foreign and domestic aviation units offered immediate support, with helicopters arriving from other cities—even LAPD offering to send their fleet. Yet due to lack of coordination, many of these aircraft were unknown to NYPD at the time and went unused in the response. He speaks candidly about the emotional toll, having lost 10 close friends among the 23 NYPD officers killed, and how that pain continues with the rise in 9/11-related cancer deaths among first responders. Post-9/11, Ken was instrumental in implementing a “96-hour standalone” plan for the NYPD, designed to maintain operations without headquarters support. Staffing schedules were restructured to ensure long-term response capacity. He shares how the aviation unit has evolved over the years—growing from six helicopters to a modern fleet including Bell 429s, a Bell 407 trainer, and a fixed-wing Caravan used for radiation scanning of incoming ships to New York Harbor. Ken also offers a detailed look at what a typical day is like for an NYPD pilot—flying patrol missions, conducting surveillance, responding to foot and vehicle pursuits, and supporting SWAT teams. He explains how the aircraft are equipped with cutting-edge tools like high-def thermal imagers, tactical radios, moving maps, and address-targeting cameras that can zoom in on a license plate from miles away. These tools enable precise coordination with ground teams and real-time intelligence, greatly improving safety and effectiveness. The conversation also delves into pilot recruitment and training, safety management system (SMS) implementation, and Ken's personal advice for those interested in joining a law enforcement aviation unit. He emphasizes that character and work ethic matter just as much as flight hours. In lighter moments, Ken shares stories of flying Barbara Bush to West Point when Marine One had mechanical issues, and being told by Yankees legend Derek Jeter that flying for the NYPD was cooler than being the Yankees' shortstop. He also describes dramatic rescues, like locating a man stranded on a sandbar after his friend swam off—and later finding that friend safe on another island. Ken currently flies both a Bell 407 and an Augusta 109 for corporate clients and continues to teach and speak for the FAA and EAA. His legacy and continued contribution to aviation safety and training are evident throughout the episode. The interview is both a sobering reflection on 9/11 and a celebration of how aviation supports public safety in today's complex world. Before RuPaul's Drag Race, there was The Birdcage—a 1996 comedy that gave us drag queens, dinner party disasters, and Robin Williams in a wifebeater. This week, Jackie and Danielle are joined by their fabulous pod pals Ajay and Jon from The Delicious Recap to relive the wigs, the scandals, and the iconic walk through South Beach. With Nathan Lane stealing every scene and Gene Hackman rocking a Barbara Bush cosplay, this film is both hilarious and historically queer. The gang dives into the movie's legacy, Robin and Nathan's casting switcheroo, and why Val might be the true villain of the story (spoiler: he needed therapy). From political hypocrisy to shrimp soup sabotage, this rewatch is as chaotic as Agador in loafers. It's heartfelt, it's hilarious, and yes, it's still got that We Are Family magic.·Season 5 Episode 10-—No More Late Fees https://nomorelatefeespodcast.com909-601-NMLF (6653)—Follow Us on Social:Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/nomorelatefees TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@nomorelatefees Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/nomorelatefeesYoutubehttps://www.youtube.com/@nomorelatefees Twitterhttps://x.com/NoMoreLateFees —CONQUERingmyconquering.com10% Off Code: JACKIE10—The Delicious RecapInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/deliciousrecap/TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@deliciousrecap

In this episode, I had the distinct honor and pleasure to interview Jean Becker on her new book Character Matters: And Other Life Lessons from George H.W. Bush.I wanted to interview Jean as soon as I heard about Character Matters.I am writing this on election day knowing this episode will be released tomorrow, November 6, 2024.  No matter the outcome of the election, half of our country will be distressed and demoralized by its outcome. The example of the life and service of President Bush is a message that our seemingly divided country needs now more than ever.Jean Becker served as chief of staff for President George H.W. Bush for nearly twenty-five years. She's the editor of Pearls of Wisdom by Barbara Bush and author of the New York Times bestseller The Man I Knew: The Amazing Story of George H.W. Bush's Post Presidency. Her latest book, Character Matters: And Other Life Lessons from George H.W. Bush, was released in April 2024.In this episode, Jean tells hilarious, poignant, and compelling stories about President Bush. She shares anecdotes about how President Bush cast political differences aside, embraced bipartisanship and put his country before himself.  From calls with world leaders, to befriending his SNL impersonator Dana Carvey to enlisting George Clooney for a hospital opening because he loved his character on ER, Character Matters is a collection of essays from those who knew him best.  In today's political climate, all of us should embrace the life lessons and legacy of George H.W. Bush as an example of how to come together as Americans. If you enjoy the show, please rate and review. Megan Lowry, Marine Corps Veteran, Veteran Wellness Specialist, and citizen of the Muscogee Nation is our guest today on the Hoffman Podcast. Megan's story is one of hope. She held 'a kernel of hope' when she came to the Hoffman Process in 2015. As a Native American, Megan wasn't sure how she would navigate the week of the Process. She shares, "Being Native, there's things that we do to grieve and things that we never show and never talk about just, culturally, and so just bringing all of that to the Hoffman process, it was intimidating." Megan served our country in the Marine Corps and then in the Secret Service for President, George W. Bush and First Lady, Barbara Bush. The military was where Megan gained so much, yet it was a place that also caused her great harm. She grew and learned to "adapt and overcome," but she suffered both sexual and emotional abuse during those years. After leaving the service, she found herself having a difficult time. Then she was fortunate to meet Lee Lesser, founder of Veteran's PATH. Lee became a mentor to Megan, helping Megan find a path of healing path that included the Hoffman Process. Now a PhD student, Megan continues to heal her significant PTSD while bringing her many skills and wisdom to serve as the commander of the Muscogee Creek Nation women's honor guard and support Veterans in finding healing and well-being. For her dissertation, Megan intends to highlight the need for a blend of healing modalities, such as talk and recreational therapies, and ties to the community to give you purpose. Megan says, "It's not just one thing or another, it's a blend of so many things, of so many pieces to create the human experience." Content warning: This episode references sexual assault, emotional trauma, and suicide. If you or someone you know is considering suicide, you can call the US National Suicide Prevention Program at 800-273-8255 or message the crisis text hotline at 741741. If you are a veteran, you can also reach out to the Veterans Crisis Line. More about Megan Lowry: Megan is a Marine Corps Veteran who served as a military police officer and presidential security. She resides in Oklahoma on the Muscogee Creek Nation Reservation with her family, caring for her aging mother and two special needs stepdaughters. Her partner builds hot rods! Megan is also serving as the commander for the Muscogee Creek Nation women's honor guard, where they are asked to travel the country providing tribal veteran representation for ceremonies. Megan received her sociology degree and her Master's in Social Work. She is working on her PhD in Psychology while also working full-time as a Veteran Wellness Specialist. She covers the state of Oklahoma for Aetna and is also on the national leadership team for veterans and native resource groups.
