In this special bonus episode of Next on the Tee, I'm honored to be joined by Dr. Russell Levenson. Russ recently retired after 32 years in ministry, most notably serving 17 years as Rector of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston—the largest Anglican/Episcopal congregation in North America. He's a renowned theologian, author, and speaker who also developed a deep friendship with President George H.W. and First Lady Barbara Bush. Russ talks about his inspiring new book, “In God's Grip: What Golf Can Teach Us About the Bible,” with a foreword by the legendary Jim Nantz. We dive into the powerful spiritual and life lessons drawn from golf and how the swing philosophies of Ben Hogan intertwine with Biblical wisdom. From focusing on fundamentals to letting go of perfection, Russ explores how the mindset that helped Hogan master the game can also guide our spiritual journeys. We also reflect on his close relationship with the Bush family, what heaven meant to them, and how the second half of the book—The Downswing—challenges our assumptions about God as a harsh judge, encouraging instead a perspective of grace, abundance, and purpose. Plus, we talk Augusta, Oakmont, and Jim Nantz's unforgettable first Masters call in 1986. This conversation is full of insight, inspiration, and a few good swings of perspective. Whether you're seeking more meaning in your game or your life, this is one you won't want to miss.
Why would President Bush talk about broccoli at a prayer breakfast? Where are other places he told his audience how much he disliked broccoli? And what did First Lady Barbara Bush think about her husband's broccoli hatred – and what stunt did she pull to retaliate? Find out in C-SPAN's “The Weekly” annual Thanksgiving food episode. President George H.W. Bush would have been 100 years old. He was born June 12, 1924. And to mark that milestone birthday, he might have jumped out of an airplane. Like he did when he turned 75 … and 80 … and 85 … and 90. Why jump out of airplanes as he got older? Here's what President Bush said in 1998: It was about closure because on September 2nd, 1944, I made a parachute jump and I did it badly. My life was spared. Off the island of Chichijima. During Word War II. But I made a mistake again went out too early and bad things happened. So for years I wanted to do it right. But what I thought the press would ridicule me. But what happened was. And maybe there's a lesson here for other old guys if there are others in this room. And somehow that silly parachute jump awaked in a lot of people that very thought. We can. We can do something even at our age. President George Bush was serious about the jumps. But he often joked about them. And he used First Lady Barbara Bush as his comedy foil. What were his best birthday parachute jokes? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The second Sunday in June is "Children's Day." The following Sunday, we celebrate Father's Day. A great deal of concern has been focused on our children as the dawn of a new century is fast approaching. Children who have graduated this last year in the 20th century are told that they will be shaping the next century. What a challenge for our children and grandchildren! Many years ago, an author by the name of Dorothy Law Nolte wrote these thoughts about children and what they learned from those around them: Children Learn What They Live. "If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with ridicule, they learn to be shy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with praise, they learn to appreciate. If children live with fairness, they learn justice. If children live with security, they learn to have faith. If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. If children live with acceptance and friendship they learn to find love in the world." Children are our teachers. They walk us, or push us, through a process of purification to our own maturity. How can we respect and honor this gift? I am reminded of what former First Lady Barbara Bush stated in a graduation speech. She said, "One hundred years from now, it will not matter what your bank account has or what sort of house you lived in, or the kind of car you drove. But the world may be different because you were important in the life of a child." Celebrate the gift of a child on Children's Day. For almost 25 years, until his death in November 2018, former president George H. W. Bush's chief of staff was Jean Becker. For event after event through both the best of those times and the worst—from dozens of affirming trips overseas to several parachute jumps in his latter years to many funerals—Becker was there to schedule it, plan it, manage it, and often attend it. If you are like me, you have been working diligently on your podcast, writing your show notes and sharing your content. You now have a stack of episodes sitting there getting the occasional download. Have you ever thought that you could turn your podcast into a book? Repurposing your content across various platforms allows you to be seen everywhere without multiplying the amount of work you are doing. Creating the content is the part that takes the time. Creation takes the mental power. The editing and rewrites eat your time. Sharing the content can be turned into a system and checklist. You can make it an efficient process and multiply your impact. As you repurpose your content, make sure you have a strategy. Decide where your content will send your listeners. Develop a strong call-to-action as you begin to be seen everywhere. Let's talk about 6 different ways you can take an episode and repurpose it across multiple platforms. VIDEO Start with video. This is the format that takes the most time and makes it possible to use this across many platforms. This doesn't need to be highly produced. You can simply shoot video of your recording your show. Add some graphics if you'd like to spice it up a bit. YouTube is the obvious place for your video. You can also use that video on your website, social media and newsletter. Share it. AUDIO You can strip the audio from the video for your podcast. No need to rerecord it. If you don't start with video, you can simply start at this point and record your show. Either works. When you record on Zoom, the platform will record both video and audio. This makes it easy to use it on both platforms. Many audio editing software programs will allow you to import the video and it will strip the audio for you. It makes it easy to repurpose your video without recording it a second time. BLOG Now that you have your show recorded, you can turn the notes into a blog post. Your show notes can be posted on your website as a blog post. Build it out so your notes are more than an outline. Add some meat to the bone. The other option is to have your show transcribed. There are various services that will do this using automation. This choice takes a little proofreading and editing on your part. You could also hire a virtual assistant who can transcribe the show for you. Either way, this gives you a lot of written content you can share elsewhere. SOCIAL Now that you have video, audio and text, you can share bits of it on social media. You can use clips of your video and audio on social. Your blog post and show notes can be turned into graphics and posts. EMAIL Your show notes can be used for your daily emails. Sending an email everyday doesn't guarantee your list will read every email. What it does mean is that your list will see your name every day. They may only read the subject lines that connect with them. But, they will see your email in their inbox each day. Frequency to the target keeps you top of mind. I was concerned that a daily email would cause people on my list to unsubscribe. Very few unsubscribed. Those that stayed were more engaged. PARTNERS As you create this great content, find partners who can use your stuff. Find other content creators who could use a bit of your content on their platform. Maybe an online magazine could use a bit of your content as an article in their content. A podcaster could use a segment of your show as part of their show. Find content creators who talk to your niche and create a partnership. PLAN As you create this content across various platforms, be sure to have a strong call-to-action. What do you want your audience to do? Your content could send your audience to your website, your lead magnet or your discovery call. Have a unified plan. When all of your content leads your audience to the same place, your maximize the impact your content can have. BOOK Now that you have multiple episodes, you can take all of that content and aggregate it into a book. Group your episodes into similar topics. Turn these groups into chapters. Find an overarching theme and create your book. Now that theory sounds easy. But, it's a little more challenging than that. Today, we have an amazing expert who can help us with the process. Dan Janal works with business owners and professionals who want to elevate their reputations and set themselves apart from their competition by writing a book. As a book coach, developmental editor, and ghostwriter, Dan shapes stories and strategies that can transform a career or business. Dan has written more than a dozen books that have been translated into six languages. His latest book is Write Your Book in a Flash. He also hosts a podcast, "Write Your Book in a Flash with Dan Janal", where he interviews subject matter experts who have written books. Evan Hafer welcomes Jean Becker to Free Range American. Jean was the Chief of Staff for former president George H.W. Bush since 1994. From 1989 to 1992 she was the deputy press secretary for First Lady Barbara Bush. She helped edit and research "All the Best, George Bush: My Life in Letters and Other Writings" and has recently released her own book titled, "The Man I Knew: The Amazing Story of George H. W. Bush's Post-Presidency"
This week, Dana sits down with former Chief of Staff to President George H.W. Bush and Deputy Press Secretary to former First Lady Barbara Bush, Jean Becker. Jean shares behind the scenes stories from her new book, The Man I Knew: The Amazing Story of George H. W. Bush's Post-Presidency and wonderful life lessons she learned through her years working for the former first family. Keep up with Dana on Twitter: @DanaPerino
When Jean Becker closed up President Bush's Houston office in 2019 after his death, she told the Houston Chronicle, “What a pleasure. What a journey.” In The Man I Knew, the former chief of staff to President George H. W. Bush shares an intimate look into the post-presidency of one of America's most influential one-term presidents. Becker served as Bush 41's chief of staff for nearly 25 years, handling monumental tasks like the opening of the George Bush Presidential Library in 1997 and overseeing the former president's state funeral in 2018. From the perspective of one of the president's closest confidantes, who was at his side when he died, The Man I Knew offers a behind-the-scenes look into how President Bush continued to lead a life of service after losing the 1992 election – going on to see his own son become president after him and serving as a mentor to Presidents Clinton and Obama. Jean Becker was chief of staff for President George H. W. Bush from 1994 until his death in 2018. In 1999, Becker took a leave of absence to focus on editing and research for the memoir, All the Best, George Bush. Becker also served as deputy press secretary to First Lady Barbara Bush (1989-1992), with whom she worked on Barbara Bush, A Memoir. Becker is a former journalist and a member of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. She holds bachelor's degrees in political science and journalism from the University of Missouri. Jon Meacham is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and presidential historian. In 2015, Meacham published his biography of President George H. W. Bush, Destiny and Power, which became a New York Times bestseller. A former executive editor at Random House, Meacham is a contributing writer to the New York Times Book Review and a contributing editor for TIME. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as the Society of American Historians, and holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from The University of the South. Chris Buckley is an author and political satirist who served as chief speechwriter to President George H. W. Bush during his vice presidency. Buckley's experience in Washington inspired his novels, The White House Mess and Thank You for Smoking. He has served as editor of Esquire and Forbes and has written for the New York Times and The New Yorker, among others. He is a graduate of Yale University. . . In a revealing, tearful, interview on Dave Ward & Friends, President George H.W. Bush's son, Neil, and grandson Pierce, talk about growing up in the famous family and national spotlight from the highs to the lows. Americans, from both sides of the aisle, will enjoy rarely heard stories about our nation's 41st President and First Lady Barbara Bush. Plus, Dave talks about his personal relationship with the senior Bush.
Sometimes when I interview celebrities, they are exactly the way I thought they would be. And sometimes, a celebrity would surprise me a little. I was surprised a little by former First Lady Barbara Bush, wife of George H.W. Bush, our 41st president. When I met her in 1994, when she published her Memoir, I was unprepared for how simple, straightforward, and folksy Mrs. Bush was. It was like talking to my mom or one of her friends over a cup of coffee. It's important to remember that Barbara Bush holds a rare distinction in American history: she is only the second woman, behind Abigail Adams, to be the wife of one president and the mother of another.

In 2018 our nation said goodbye to four American heroes. This week we mourn the passing of the 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush. He was preceded in death this year by his wife of 73 years —former First Lady Barbara Bush, U.S. Senator John McCain, and the Rev. Billy Graham. Russell Moore and Dan Darling join Jeff Pickering to reflect on these towering leaders who shaped generations of politics, culture, and world events. Guest Biography Russell Moore serves as the eighth president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Wall Street Journal has called Moore “vigorous, cheerful, and fiercely articulate.” He was named in 2017 to Politico Magazine's list of fifty influence-makers in Washington and has been profiled by such publications as the Washington Post, the New Yorker, and the Weekly Standard. A native Mississippian, Moore and his wife Maria are the parents of five sons. Bush, shares about her warm personality, as does Hugh Hewitt in his tribute to the late First Lady. Jim Daly, President of Focus on the Family in Colorado, and Michael Medved share troubling details concerning California's Assembly Bill 2943, which will have a chilling effect on conservatives, Christians, and commerce. Mike Gallagher turns to Molly Himingway of the Federalist to discuss former FBI Director James Comey's book "A Higher Loyalty," which has fueled "Revenge Tour," against President Trump. Hugh Hewitt invites retired Admiral James Stavridis to discuss CIA Director Mike Pompeo's secret meeting with North Korea's Kim Jung Un over Easter, then turns to Senator Tom Cotton to shed light on the tensions with Russia since the U.S., British, and French strike on Syria, and if Russian sanctions are to be expected. Jamie Glazov, author editor of Front-page Magazine, shares with Larry Elder some very important questions that were not asked of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerbert during his appearance before Congress. London has now passed New York City in per capita murders, and Larry Elder points out the hypocracy of the London mayor's knife ban patrols. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
