Listen in to the fascinating discourse within Talmud (Eruvin 13b), and as we uncover the profound debates between the house of Shammai and the house of Hillel concerning the phrasing of morning blessings. We delve into the wisdom of Rav Meir, whose intricate logic in Halacha was often beyond the grasp of his peers, resulting in the Halacha not always aligning with his views. We also touch on the Kabbalistic notion that the world was crafted through divine utterances, highlighting the powerful significance of the Aleph Beis letters. Through a personal anecdote about my grandfather's rabbi, we emphasize the mystical importance of understanding these letters in Jewish spirituality. In our conversation, we further examine the exceptional analytical abilities of Rebbe Meir, a Talmudic sage known for his capacity to argue both sides of an issue convincingly. We discuss the role of visual interaction in learning and how a teacher's facial expressions can enhance comprehension. The episode also touches on the importance of Agadic Talmud, offering deeper narratives and teachings. We explore the impressive skills of Rebbe Meir's disciple, Sumchus, who could provide extensive reasoning for various rulings, and recount the extraordinary talents of the Gaon of Vilna, showcasing his deep understanding of the Talmud from a young age. This engaging discussion underscores the value of opposition in Jewish legal rulings, providing a stark contrast to the concept of unanimous decisions often seen in modern legal systems._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. There is a Midrash brought down in the Otzer HaMidrashim called the Midrash Gadol, that lists things that are great. One of them is Gadol HaShalom/Peace is great. There are many reasons listed, which we will share over the next few days. The first is that we see Peace is great, because first thing that God created in the world was about peace. This was light . By creating light, God created peace. Light brings peace. When there is darkness, people trip, they fall and they get into fights. That is why, on Shabbat, we light candles- because light brings Shalom, and Shabbat is the time of Shalom. So therefore, in order to have Shalom Bayit, Peace in the home, we light candles. It's fascinating that the first thing that God created was a peace item. If you have to choose between buying Shabbat candles or wine for Kiddush , you have to buy the candles because Shalom Bayit overrides kiddush . Peace trumps all. Furthermore, since Shalom bay it is so important, the Midrash continues and says that so Great is Peace that God allows a His name, that's written in holiness, to be erased in waters, to create peace between husband and wife. When a man is suspicious that maybe his wife did something wrong, a special chapter from the Torah is written on a scroll and erased. This has magical, miraculous powers to determine if the lady is innocent or not. And this magical, mystical truth serum is created by erasing God's name. Why is it done this way? Because peace is so great, God says to erase His name for it. We can see this in people as well. There is a story about Rebbe Meir who used to give a class on Friday nights. One night, a woman attended his class and came home late. Her husband was upset with her and refused to let her enter the house unless she spit in the face of the rabbi who gave the speech. A neighbor overheard the husband screaming and told the rabbi what he said. The rabbi then told the woman that he had something in his eye, and he needed someone to spit in it in order to clear it up. His students wondered what he was doing. Would he really go to such an extent, to embarrass himself? And he said that if God could have his name erased for Shalom, he could take a little bit of insult for Shalom. Have a wonderful day! Gadol Hashalom Peace is great!
Elisha Ben Avuha was one of the greatest Torah scholars who ever lived--He was a tanna, a great Torah teacher, and the rebbe of Rebbe Meir -- until he became Acher, the Heretic. In that state he undid all of the good that he had accomplished, and did things that were purely evil. Yet, when he died, he wasnt allowed into Gehenom, because of the merit of Torah until his student, Rebbe Meir, begged for mercy. Through this gripping story we are introduced to the value of Torah learning, the one act that can never leave a person. A great motivating Shmuz for setting goals and succeeding in learning. This message of spiritual interaction was given at our congregation the first Sabbath after Yom Kippur. I was prompted before a potentially very dangerous situation occurred. Safely parked in the drive of friends. Without any warning, the vehicles brakes had totally failed while it was stationary and just before a long, steep and very curvy decline of road ahead. The car remains parked and once again G-d has proven His hand in this life. Rebbe Meir

Jewish Bible Deut 18. G-d speaks to Moses 15 “Adonai will raise up for you a prophet like me from among yourselves, from your own kinsmen. You are to pay attention to him, 16 just as when you were assembled at Horev and requested Adonai your God, ‘Don't let me hear the voice of Adonai my God any more, or let me see this great fire ever again; if I do, I will die!' 17 On that occasion Adonai said to me, ‘They are right in what they are saying. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kinsmen. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I order him. 19 Whoever doesn't listen to my words, which he will speak in my name, will have to account for himself to me. Rebbe Meir
Times have always been in a state of change, But this generation is in the fast forward lane. The Hebrew scriptures said it would be. Rebbe Meir
