April 24, 2026 - Equipped 2026 - Day 2 - 9:00 AM Session Good morning, everyone. Saturday, 25 April 2026 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” Matthew 19:7 “They say to Him, ‘Therefore, why he did enjoin, Moses, to give a divorce scroll to dismiss her?'” (CG) In the previous verse, Jesus, having cited Scripture to justify His conclusion, said that what God has joined, man should not separate. With that stated, an obvious question arose. Matthew records, “They say to Him, ‘Therefore, why he did enjoin, Moses, to give a divorce scroll to dismiss her?'” The reason this is obvious is that it is found in the Pentateuch or Torah, the same five books in which Genesis is recorded. There is nothing wrong with the question, and such confusion should be expected. If a truth is evidently being taught in one part of the Torah and elsewhere something seems contradictory to that, then how can those thoughts be reconciled? Such confusion will often cause one to take the laxer stand in the debate unless there is a compelling reason why they shouldn't. In other words, “This appears to say something in Genesis, but it isn't explicit. Our teacher has noted that Deuteronomy says something different, which is stated explicitly. Therefore, we must go with Deuteronomy.” That is why there were different schools of thought, such as Shammai and Hillel. One may have deduced that the precept implied in Genesis had limitations. The other held firmly to Deuteronomy due to its explicitly stated nature. As Moses didn't give any further qualifications, then the laxer approach must be acceptable. However, there is one more consideration at this time in Israel's history. In Malachi 2:16, the prophet declared to the people – “And this is the second thing you do: You cover the altar of the Lord with tears, With weeping and crying; So He does not regard the offering anymore, Nor receive it with goodwill from your hands. 14 Yet you say, ‘For what reason?' Because the Lord has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by covenant. 15 But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. 16 For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence, Says the Lord of hosts. Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.” Malachi 2:13-16 Because of this, Israel should have carefully considered the words of Moses and taken a second look at their actions and attitudes concerning divorce. Life application: Theology is not always black and white and clearly set on the pages of Scripture. Many things have to be carefully considered from a much wider angle than a single precept on a page. It is true that Moses gave an allowance for divorce. But what was the reason for it? Jesus will give a clear and exacting response to the question. When thought through, it should make sense to those who hear it. But Jesus' response will elicit more concerns in the minds of His disciples. But this is how the Bible presents things. There are things to be inferred. Directives come along that may seem confusing. Other things are stated later that are hard to reconcile with what has already been said, etc. Eventually, however, as the years pass, the greater plan of redemption becomes clearer and clearer. Little steps are taken to give lessons. From there, things will take their place. When that occurs, people may still not understand what is happening because they have failed to see the progression of what God is doing. Those who continue to hold to the law are in such a category. They failed to see that the law was a steppingstone to lead Israel to Jesus. In failing to see that, they rejected the new direction. Along with their rejection, they teach others who were never under the law that they need to go back to the part of the plan where those teaching law observance still are. All of this is because of a failure to see the greater picture of what God is doing. That is why God has made the gospel so hugely simple. If people can't understand the basic gospel, and the world is full of people who don't, imagine if it were any more complicated! God is looking to get people saved through Christ. Once that is done, it is important to grow in Christ, lest someone come along and pull you back into a part of what God has already set aside. Keep reading the Bible! Keep looking at what God has done from the bigger and more complete plan of redemption. This is how you will be firm and secure in what is a big and complicated book. Glorious Lord God, thank You for the simple gospel. By it we are saved. Once that is out of the way, help us to continue to grow in our walk with You. May we be responsible stewards of the time You have given us. Help us in this, O God. Amen.
Tuesday, 21 April 2026 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” Matthew 19:3 “And they approached Him, Pharisees, testing Him, and saying to Him, ‘If it permits a man to dismiss his wife for every cause?'” (CG) In the previous verse, Jesus was noted as having great multitudes follow Him, and He healed them in that area. Next, it says, “And they approached Him, Pharisees.” Again, as has happened throughout His ministry, Jesus is accosted by members of the legalistic, self-righteous party of the Pharisees. As expected, they came “testing Him.” A problem with their testing is that no matter what doctrine or evidence Jesus provided, they would not accept Him. This has already been proven true, and it will continue to be so. The prophets had spoken in the past concerning Israel's leadership, and they were too blind to see it. At this time, they were testing Him, “and saying to Him, ‘If it permits a man to dismiss his wife for every cause?'” Here is a new word, aitia, a cause (as if asked for). It also reflects seeking a logical reason behind a motive or matter, such as a crime. Thus, it would include accusations. It is not stated why this was asked, but because they are “testing” Him, they may have heard directly or indirectly about one of His teachings concerning marriage. For example, in Matthew 5, Jesus said – “And it was said that whoever, if he shall dismiss his wife, he gives to her a divorcement. 32And I, I say, to you that whoever if he shall dismiss his wife, except a word of harlotry, he makes her commit adultery. And whoever if ‘her having been dismissed' he shall marry, he commits adultery.” Matthew 5:31, 32 Having heard this, they may be trying to entrap Him by pitting Him against Moses. They may also be trying to trap Him between noted teachers of Israel who had commented on the matter. For example, the school of the teacher Shammai said that adultery was the only allowable reason for divorce. On the other hand, Hillel took Moses' words to mean any reason the husband deemed suitable when the wife had displeased him. The allowance for divorce is found in Deuteronomy 24:1-4. Nothing is specifically stated concerning what offense rose to such a level. Moses says, “it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her.” The statement is general enough to mean whatever the leaders at the time determined. Hence, the opinion of the rabbis would weigh heavily on the matter. Life application: One can see the importance of finding the right instructor in religious matters by considering the different views these religious instructors held. Israel was God's chosen people to reveal Him and what He expected. But seeing the vast difference between the views of Shammai and Hillel tells us that either one view or the other might be right, or they may both be wrong, but they both could not be right. As such, one or both were leading the people astray from what God expected. That may seem trivial two thousand years later when they are all dead and gone, and the law no longer has any bearing on those who have come to Christ. But Israel really was punished for turning from God's law. And Jesus strongly condemned those leaders who turned the people from properly observing it. Do you suppose it is any different today? Did God stop caring about theology when Christ came out of the grave? Rather, theology is more important today than it ever was during biblical times. We now must decide if Jesus was just a man who taught well or is He truly God incarnate. Some teachers say that we are obligated, in part or in whole, to observe the Law of Moses. Others teach that the law has been annulled in Christ for Jews and that it never (no, never ever!) applied to Gentiles. The matter is so important that Paul calls down a curse upon those who wrongly teach this matter. Therefore, seeing that having the right instructor is important, the question that then must be asked is, “How do you know if he is a sound instructor?” There can be only one correct answer to that question: Does he adhere properly to what the Bible says? And guess what? You cannot know if he does or doesn't unless... unless... unless you read and know the Bible. Otherwise, you are playing with fire, trusting someone because of his charm, oratory skills, confidence, or some other trait that has nothing to do with soundly adhering to God's word. Be sure to read and know your Bible – “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:8, 9 Lord God, how thankful we are to have Your word and to be able to freely read and contemplate it. Without that available, we are left in a world full of falsity concerning You and what You expect of us. Thank You that we can know the truth when we enter Your wonderful word! Amen.

With the prime example of Akavya ben Mehallalel -- who is NOT deemed a rebellious elder. He had a tradition and an opinion that counters the majority, but is a regular dispute, as far as that goes. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933), in Siman 242 (Se'if Katan 9), writes that if somebody receives from another person some food for Shabbat, he should not eat that food on a weekday. Since the food was sent specifically in honor of Shabbat, it should be eaten on Shabbat. The Halachic authorities debate the question of whether this ruling was intended as strict Halacha, or as a Middat Hasidut (additional measure of piety). Either way, the Kaf Ha'haim (Rav Yaakob Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939) writes (in Se'if Katan 18, citing the Sefer Hasidim) that if one has no need for this food, such as if he already has enough food for Shabbat, and if he leaves it until the next Shabbat it would go spoiled, or if he is not accustomed to eating this kind of food on Shabbat, then he may eat it on a weekday. Certainly, it is permissible to taste the food on Friday in fulfillment of the Misva of "To'ameha Haim Zachu" (tasting food on Ereb Shabbat to ensure its quality). The work Piskeh Teshubot notes that this Halacha mentioned by the Mishna Berura applies only to food that one received from somebody else. If this food was earmarked for Shabbat, then it should not be eaten on a weekday. If, however, a person himself purchased food for Shabbat, he may change his mind and use it during the week. Proof may be drawn from the Gemara's famous description of Shammai, who would sometimes find a higher quality portion of food after making his purchases for Shabbat, and in such cases he would use the first portion during the week and designate the second, higher quality portion for Shabbat. This proves that one who purchased a piece of food for Shabbat may change his mind and use it during the week. And although in the case of Shammai he changed his mind only after finding a higher quality piece of food, it stands to reason that this applies even generally, and thus one who purchased some food for Shabbat is allowed to change his mind and eat it on a weekday. Summary: One who purchased a food for Shabbat may change his mind and eat it on a weekday. However, if somebody was sent food from another person specifically for Shabbat, he should not eat it on a weekday unless he does not need it for Shabbat and it would go spoiled if it is saved until the next Shabbat.

It begins by referencing Philippians 2:3-4, which encourages believers to consider others as superior and look after their interests. Will Dyer highlights the upcoming Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving celebrations, noting that these gatherings often include people we may not enjoy being around. The sermon draws on teachings from rabbis Hillel and Shammai, as well as Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, to illustrate the principle of treating others as we would like to be treated, known as the Golden Rule. Will Dyer stresses that proper thinking, rooted in understanding our own brokenness and the grace we've received from Jesus, leads to proper living. By adopting the mindset of Christ, who humbled himself for humanity's sake, believers can extend grace and generosity to others, transforming their relationships and interactions. The sermon concludes with a call to recognize and embrace the grace of God, which enables us to live with a thankful heart and in right relationships with others.
We read in Parashat Lech-Lecha of Hagar, an Egyptian woman who become the maidservant of Sara Imenu. The Midrash teaches that Sara was actually a princess, Pharaoh's daughter, and Pharaoh gave her as a maidservant to Sara upon seeing Avraham and Sara's greatness, and realizing what a privilege it would be for his daughter to work in their home. Later, after Avraham and Sara lived together for many years without children, Sara had Avraham marry Hagar. Hagar immediately conceived, resulting in tensions between her and Sara. Sara mistreated Hagar, and Hagar fled. She ended up meeting an angel, who urged her to return to Avraham and Sara's home, despite the hardships she would face there. Hagar complied. Hagar's return to Sara conveys a powerful lesson to each and every one of us. She understood the immense value and benefit of joining Avraham and Sara, even when this entailed a degree of hardship. It was difficult for Hagar to live in the home, given the tensions that arose between her and Sara, but she nevertheless accepted the angel's advice, coming to realize that it is worth enduring this unpleasantness for the sake of the great privilege of living with Avraham and Sara. The Gemara in Masechet Shabbat (31a) tells the famous story of a non-Jew who came before Shammai and said that he would convert to Judaism if Shammai could teach him the entire Torah in just a few moments, within the amount of time he could stand on one foot. Shammai sent the man away, figuring that he could not possibly be serious about embracing Judaism if he demanded to learn the entire Torah in just a few seconds. The gentile then came to Hillel, and said the same thing – that he would convert if Hillel could teach him the entire Torah while he stood on one foot. Hillel warmly embraced him, and said, "That which you dislike – do not do to your fellow." He explained that this concept encapsulates the entire Torah. This story is often understood as contrasting the approaches of Hillel and Shammai, showing how Shammai followed a stricter policy, whereas Hillel was more patient and tolerant. However, I would like to suggest an additional angle to this story. Perhaps, the gentile's experience with Shammai is told not as a point of contrast with his experience with Hillel, but rather as the background to his experience to Hillel. Meaning, Hillel quite possibly accepted this prospective convert as sincere and well-meaning precisely because he continued in his quest even after being rejected by Shammai. The fact that the man did not relent, and persisted in his attempt to join the Jewish Nation, even after a rejection, demonstrated how highly he regarded the privilege of being a Jew. His perseverance testified to his sincerity, showing that he was prepared to go through a lengthy process for the priceless opportunity to join Am Yisrael. He in fact was not just looking for an easy route; like Hagar, he was prepared to do whatever it took to become part of the Jewish People. We declare each morning during the Shaharit service, "Ashrenu Ma Tob Helkenu, U'ma Na'im Goralenu, U'ma Yafa Me'od Yerushatenu" – "We are fortunate, how good is our portion, and how pleasant is our lot, and how exceedingly beautiful is our inheritance!" At the beginning of every day, we are to remind ourselves of how privileged we are to belong to Hashem's special nation, to be able to devote our lives to His service. We remind ourselves that no matter what we will have to do deal with over the course of the day, we've won the lottery of life, we have received a precious gift. Yes, throughout any given day, a Jew is going to confront challenges. He might struggle with a challenge to his faith, a challenge posed by his sinful inclinations, the hardships that arise when seeking to meticulously observe the Misvot, or the hostility so often shown to us by other peoples. Belonging to Am Yisrael is not always going to be easy. But we can and must look to Hagar for inspiration, to be reminded that we are truly fortunate, that any difficulties that we endure are a small price to pay for the great privilege that we have been given to serve the Almighty.
A practical example, of one who found his children to be lacking and gave all of his property to Yonatan ben Uziel instead of to his official heirs. The sage gave a portion of that gift back to the children, which opened a tussle with Shammai, over the standing of the benefactor's wishes. Also, the 80 students of Hillel the Elder, and their greatness, including the least of them being R. Yochanan ben Zakkai, and how accomplished and steadfast he was in learning Torah. Also, a new mishnah! When man who specifies his heirs, he's largely believed - and then his wife would be proven exempt from yibum. Which is more of a "yibum" issue than an "inheritance" issue, but it applies to both.
Shammai's Episode No. 151We need to take the issue of hate very seriously as we approach the Election 2024 finish line, because of North Carolina Gubernatorial Candidate Mark Robinson's long well-documented history of hateful rhetoric, including outrageous Holocaust denial comments and statements wishing Adolf Hitler was still alive. We also have to take very seriously the support Donald Trump has given him, at least up until yesterday, including hosting a fundraiser for him at Mar-A-Lago earlier this year, and calling him a rising Republican star. And we also have to take very seriously the support the GOP has given him and still does. Finally, we also have to take very seriously the support and the hate Robinson, Trump, and the GOP nationally are running on. Be afraid. Be very afraid.Support the show

We explore the famous midrashic description of the machlokes between Korach and Moshe Rabeinu comparing (in Mishan Avot) with that of Hillel and Shammai.Along the way the Gra's comment on that mishnah references the Wars of the Lord poem in Num 21:14 which leads us down a different path. We then return to chassidic dimensions of machlokes as an inner spiritual journey that somehow mediates between mankind and the Divine and how that applies to our own inner battles.
