Thank you so much for listening to ON THE DELO. Follow me on IG at iamthedelo and check out my website www.iamthedelo.com Stephen has a great story and is a self made business dude having promoted shows fresh from high school. He is very well known in Arizona and owns a local club called the Rebel Lounge. He gets to work with all sorts of bands from their infant stages to popularity. He donates his time to give back to the music business by helping form Save our Stages during Covid. I really enjoyed my time with him to understand his world I hope you enjoy it as well. https://www.linkedin.com/redir/redirect?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Epsykosteve%2Ecom&urlhash=kN9Y&trk=public_profile_website
Owner and main talent buyer for Rebel Lounge, and 6th generation Arizonan, Stephen Chilton, aka Psyko Steve, stops by for a chat. We dive deep into his punk rock roots, from booking friends' bands at Modified Arts in Phoenix in 2000 to putting on his own festival downtown in 2022 called Zona Music Festival. He shares his experience working for Stateside Presents and Crescent Ballroom and promoting shows as Psyko Steve. We also rap about his idea to start his own music venue The Rebel Lounge, in the former Mason Jar, in 2015. We rap about the evolution of the Phoenix scene and how a handful of venues changed it completely and the current state of the music industry. We also touch on his important work during the pandemic to create the National Independent Venue Association and the #saveourstages movement which resulted in important legislation which saved thousands of independent stages across the country. For more information on The Rebel Lounge, please visit https://therebellounge.com/
I've reached another huge goal in the Podcast Of Dustiny. I have been going to the Rebel Lounge since I was 16 years old. Even when it was called The Mason Jar. Seeing bands like afi, anti flag, jimmy eat world, and so many others. I can't believe I got to do a podcast at place that means so much to me. I want to thank the rebel lounge for letting me do this episode and also special thanks to Ianthe for giving me the idea to do this episode at their show! Also thanks to the rest of the bands on the show The Color 8, Neighbor Kids, and Catbamboo. Enjoy the episode! The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) formed during the pandemic to support independent performance venues and promoters. NIVA now encompasses over 3,000 independent venues in 50 states including Washington D.C. They've pressured the Small Business Administration to act. By the end of 2020, the Small Business Association (SBA) signed the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, the largest arts funding program in history with $16 billion dollars allocated for independent venues. It took months of lobbying to get the federal government's attention, and in early June, when only 100 venues had received aid, the lobbying continued. In this audio exclusive, correspondent Janet Hernandez, an intern for The Laura Flanders Show, interviews Stephen Chilton, NIVA's vice president and owner of the independent venue Rebel Lounge in Phoenix, AZ. What's at stake when venues can't reopen, and how will NIVA support the industry post-pandemic? While mainstream media or money media keeps you in a bubble, we're committed to popping that bubble by continuing to bring you listener sponsored radical, intersectional media! Can we depend on you to chip in? Go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate and join our team by making a donation today. Thanks
With nearly all concerts, festivals, and comedy shows canceled over the past year, the live event industry has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. And it’s been particularly tough for America’s small, independently owned venues—those like The Rebel Lounge on 24th street and Indian School. One survey in April found that 90% of these venues across America were in danger of closing. There was only one thing that could save them: unprecedented government action. We chat with Steve Chilton in Phoenix about his passion for promoting live concerts, repurposing his venue to a coffee shop (for now), the forming of the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), his forecast for the business-side of live music and what fans can expect.
The Sound Sisters are all about supporting music venues, and in honor of this episode's special guest they kick things off discussing their most memorable moments at Phoenix's infamous staple The Mason Jar, now known as The Rebel Lounge. Later, they brought in Arizona veteran concert promoter Stephen Chilton (owner of Psyko Steve Presents and The Rebel Lounge) to discuss his political efforts with NIVA: National Independent Venue Association. As a founder and one of the Vice Presidents, Steve fights alongside the rest of the board to help save independent music venues through political activism. NIVA's focus is securing financial support to preserve the national ecosystem of independent venues and promoters. He also chats with the Sisters about various promoter war stories, including how a well-known national band's dumbassery almost caused a full on riot. Find out the name of that band and how you can help #saveourstages on this episode of the Sound Sister's podcast! Music from: Casket Life - Rock n Roll Death Machine The Venomous Pinks - Hold On
Have you ever wanted to gab with a maven of his or her field? On this week's episode I interview an expert on all things live music and music venues - Stephen Chilton, who has been a live concert promoter in Arizona since he was 17 years old. He has owned Psyko Steve Presents for 20 years, owned The Rebel Lounge in Phoenix, AZ for five years, and is the Vice President (and one of the founders) of the newly formed National Independent Venue Association (NIVA). In this inaugural episode of The Holy Ghost Has Ears, hosts Lily and Matt discuss Phoenix area live music venues: Crescent Ballroom; The Rebel Lounge; The Trunk Space; The Van Buren; Marquee Theatre; Mystery Prescott Valley venue (The Shop); & Nile Theater.Correction: We understand that Matt meant to say Kids in the Hall, not New Kids on the Block; you'll know when.
One random fateful night at a mostly music open mic, my buddy Eric Hula was celebrating his birthday at the Rebel Lounge. I get up, do my standup set, and was followed by a gentleman named Jared. He was super talented, and sang an acapella version of one of his songs and was incredible. What happened next is still a mystery to me. This tiny little blonde girl get's on stage, and her acoustic guitar is certainly more than half of her size. She starts playing the first note and I am immediately intrigued. BUT THEN SHE OPENED HER MOUTH and the whole fucking world stopped. MVE's voice is so utterly captivating, and I was in such disbelief as to what I was hearing. I had never met Mae before this, and was too scared to approach her in person, as I am an introvert to a fault. I reached out to her over Instagram asking if she would like to come be a part of the podcast and she was excited to! So without further a due, here is MVE's episode number 16 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hellatiredpodcast/support
