Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, together known as SOFI TUKKER, defy every convention of electronic dance music.   This conversation explores their unlikely origin story—from D1 basketball captain and aspiring diplomat to electronic music revolutionaries who've achieved stratospheric success by approaching their craft with athletic discipline and meditative mindfulness. Through an alchemy of Portuguese poetry and pulsing beats, they've amassed over 3 billion streams, scored multiple Grammy nominations, and landed high-profile Apple campaigns while sustaining well-being amidst non-stop touring.   These two transformed my understanding of what electronic artists can be.   SOFI TUKKER is a revelation—and a testament to the power of authentic self-expression. This week Chris Wright is joined by one of the most successful music producers in the world whose career ignited when he produced Sade's debut album "Diamond Life". Sir Robin Millar is also a highly successful businessman, and he is the Chair of Scope UK, the national charity representing the 16 million disabled people in the UK.The conversation jumps straight into the deep end of things with the problems of cancel culture and the issues caused when people in business, and life, hold grudges against you. They then explore the significance of Robin having a West Indian mother and how this impacted his outlook and life experiences. They then discuss the painful subject of Robin's blindness and the difference between being born blind and developing blindness like Robin did. Chris then asks about the formative years of his career that led him to the vast success he has enjoyed for several decades, including his breakthrough in getting a job at the Château d'Hérouville recording studio in the Northwest of Paris. Robin tells his story of Sade. Producing on Diamond Life with her was what took Robin from being a successful producer to the stratosphere of being sought after around the globe. This then opens up a fascinating discussion about the two-tone music of the late 70s/early 80s that Chris Wright was instrumental in reviving, having signed record deals with bands like the Specials (famous for the song ‘Ghost Town' among many others). They return to Sade where Robin explains how she became a hit in America and then what it entails for an artist and their records to become mega-famous. They finally talk in-depth about the business of music including the ins and outs of their business partnership at Chrysalis and a possible new venture together! What on earth can us business owners learn from Jono Coghill, a member of Powderfinger … one of Australia's biggest ever rock bands? The answer? Plenty! Tune in as we go deep into the business of music with rock 'n roll royalty. It's a very rock ‘n roll episode 612 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast with host Tim Reid.  A little more about Powderfinger's Jono Coghill …  Jono Coghill was the drummer for Powderfinger, one of Australia's biggest rock bands of the 90s and naughties. Their achievements include 18 ARIA awards, the third highest behind Silverchair and John Farnham, including Best Group, Album of the Year and Highest Selling Album.  They've sold millions of albums, and accumulated well over 1.5 billion downloads on Spotify alone. Their anthems These Days and My Happiness were ranked #1 on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 1999 and 2000, and 21 other Powderfinger tracks have ranked on this list in other years. They've toured with ColdPlay, Crowded House and Silverchair, and have had their music feature in Hollywood blockbusters including Mission Impossible and Two Hands. Now, at this point I can hear you yelling down your speaker “Hey Timbo, what's all this got to do with small business marketing?” Everything! This is a deep dive with one of Australia's rock ‘n roll royalty about the business of music. Afterall, Powderfinger went from an idea to a small business to a very fucking big one. So sit back as we cover branding, the creative process, income streams, band dynamics, dealing with both fame and failure, the importance of mentors, the annoyance of yes men, and so much more.  Oh BTW, you might have picked up there's a language warning on this episode, so lock the kids up if you need to! Righto, let's go and meet Cogsy … Resources mentioned in this episode of your favorite marketing podcast Powderfinger's official website Interview with Jeff Bezos's shadow Interview with Janene Liston - The Pricing Lady Interview with Alexandra Watkins on business names Register free for Timbo's upcoming Effective Outsourcing Webinar Interview with John Murphy about getting to the top of Google for free Services every business owner needs that Timbo recommends How to generate organic traffic to your website(without spending anything on advertising) High converting website designers(They built this website - take this simple quiz and see where yours needs improving) DIY SEO training - The most cost-effective way to get on page 1 of Google(20% off with discount code Timbo20) Proven customer attraction strategy(and ridiculously cheap)    Businesses that made this podcast possible (please support them) DELL Technologies - Small business solutions Studio 1 Design - High converting website designers Fun Escapes - Proven customer attraction ideas Hawk Academy - DIY SEO training (discount code Timbo20 for 20% off)   Thanks for tuning in. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

The best way to become good at most things is by simply doing them; by finding out what works and what don't work; to get in the trenches; to pay your dues, trial and error….and sometime trial by fire. The music business, like any other, has lots of ins and outs, lots of best practices and general rules for success.  And as I just said, the best way to become good at something is through experience, however, you can also reduce the grade of the learning curve by listening to people who have already been there and done that; people who are already at a level of success you haven't reached yet and learn from them or simply model what that are doing. Our guest today is Sam Cox.  Thus far during his career in music, Sam has gained experience in about ever facet of this game.  Sam's spent time as a front man, a side-man, a songwriter, a tour manager, a booking agent, a promotor and publicist, a………you get the picture. Sam currently handles a lot of these roles for the Oklahoma based band, fronted by his wife Autumn I might add, Ragland.  He's also handling the booking and mangement duties for another Oklahoma artist named Tyler Byrd through his management company Highway 82 Management. I think there are lots of nuggets of info in this episode for anyone in any facet of the music business. If you have any specific questions for Sam and want to reach out to him, he can be reached by emailing him at KEDmanagement@yahoo.com  or by going to https://www.thebandragland.com  .
