In this episode, Oliver interviews Scott Scoullar, Chief Executive of Summerset, about New Zealand's looming aged care crisis with a projected shortfall of 7,000-8,000 beds by 2030 despite increasing elderly demographics. They discuss how retirement villages provide cost-effective care solutions, the regulatory hurdles of building new facilities, and the urgent need for better dialogue between the aged care sector and government policymakers.

Roarke Loves His People: We Review "Apprentice in Death"

Podcast In Death

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2025 116:28

In this episode we review "Apprentice in Death," where Willow Mackie is one of the absolute worst characters on the planet.AJ had a theory about the theme that might sound a little random at first, but hear her out: the theme of this book is cold. And she has the receipts. There are literal mentions of “cold blood” everywhere and Feeney even says, “You can't teach cold blood, Dallas.” But also, randomly, there's a subplot about Eve owning the most elite ice cream shop in NYC (Because Roarke), and yes, the killers went there for caramel sundaes after murdering people. Feeney's reaction? “Fucking cold. And I ain't talking ice cream.”We love the scene where Eve consults with Lowenbaum at "The Dallas Palace," but we are sad when Lowenbaum later faces some really hard truths. This is the book where Willow Mackie decides to execute a mass "Pew, Pew"-ing, and it just so happens to be at Madison Square Garden where Mavis is playing and Summerset took Roarke's tickets to go see her. Eve and Roarke are both panicked as they speed down to the scene. Many people are dead or injured but all of Eve and Roarke's people are fine and they are relieved. Eve is so relieved that she asks Summerset to make sure Dickie Berenski is okay. Is EVE okay??This is also the book where we first meet Jake!! Nadine warns him Eve won't recognize him. She doesn't. He's already calling her “Lois.” We love him. After a very emotional and exhausting night, Eve and Roarke fight over whether or not Eve should question Summerset at that very moment. Roarke says no, Eve says yes. We have to say, we are siding with Eve on this one. We understand that Roarke loves his people and worries about them, but Eve and Summerset need to work things out on their own. Also, this was a really interesting book to read right after reading "Bonded," as Summerset talks about having an "Urban Wars" flashback.

In this episode, because we just read "Bonded in Death," and got some more good information about some details of Summerset's involvement in the "Urban Wars," we thought that we would re-visit this topic, since the first time we talked about it way back on Episode #19, we were OFF topic more than we were ON topic. We also talk about how like it or not, this series...and books in general ARE political, so politics are going to come up from time to time. We recognize that talking too much politics might lose us some listeners, but when it's relevant to a book, we are going to bring it up. We are hoping that the majority of our listeners understand this and will stick with us.Anyway...we were both a bit distracted in this episode, but hopefully, it's still entertaining!

This week, we give you Part 2 of our review of "Bonded in Death." In this part, the plan comes together and after a few mishaps (where Eve gets shot AT, not shot), the NYPSD finally captures Conrad Potter.Speaking of Conrad Potter, he is going to go down in "Podcast in Death" history as one of our least favorite villains. Among other things, he's a bigoted wanker, and a privileged fuck, and we really hate him. Some great moments here, including Eve and Roarke dismantling a bomb, and the whole crew (and Roarke) breaking into Conrad Potter's home to save a child he had kidnapped (Potter is the absolute worst). Potter calling Eve the "C" word, and earning a kidney punch from Roarke. The book is aptly named because we see how Summerset and the rest of "The Twelve" had formed such a tight bond. BUT...is this the book where Eve and Summerset finally bond??

It's finally here! We're finally reviewing "Bonded in Death"! And we had so much to say about it, we had to turn this into a Two Part Review. The theme of this book is "Trust," and trust us, it's a very, very, dense book. We learn so much about Summerset's background (and Eve does too, once she finally gets around to talking to him!), and the case itself it pretty complicated. Although, our killer in this one is pretty basic. He's essentially a sexist, bigoted ass hat, who does some really horrible things. This is why the end of the book was so very satisfying.A LOT of touching moments in this book, and a LOT of really funny moments. The book is going to be on the list of our favorites of the whole series. But, again, this is Part 1, so, we cover the first 12 chapters, learn a lot about Summerset's past, and figure out a bunch of things about the killer in order to move on to the second part, which is finally taking him down.

He's a traditional kind of guy.We go off topic a lot in this one, especially when we talk about Summerset, who we are sure has a difficult time being discreet in a house where Eve and Roarke pretty much have sex anywhere they decide to.

On our latest weekly roundup, we catch you up on our winter-break adventures (which were less wintry than in years past). What we're watching: Instead of watching something together, we reported on what we consumed during our time off. Catherine saw the movie The Boys in the Boat in an actual theater with multiple generations of family members. It's exactly the sort of movie that it sounds like it should be from that setup: historical, inspirational, Oscar-bait-y. Mission accomplished, Director George Clooney!Catherine also watched Asteroid City (on an airplane, which seems appropriate for this film set in a space-obsessed 1950s desert town). It's star-studded, with the Wes Anderson Quirk dial turned up to the max. Mentioned: The Afterparty's season 2 episode, "Hannah."Meanwhile, Terri subscribed to VEEPS, a streaming service that allows her to watch live and recorded concerts. She's checked out old favorites like HARDY and discovered new artists too, including The Summer Set and Something Corporate. It's a great value for the money if you love music but in-person concerts are not as fun as they used to be.Catherine's library find this week is a subset of the familiar Choose Your Own Adventure series. Did you know you can Choose Your Own Nightmare?! We'd rather not, but can imagine the appeal this might hold for some tweens and teens. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed parenting rites of passage (January 12, 2022), empty-nest careers (January 14, 2021), and real-life FastPasses (January 12, 2016).Next week, we'll watch the movie The Holdovers, which you can find on Peacock, Amazon Prime, and maybe even in your local movie theater. Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

***ATTENTION! THIS EPISODE TALKS ABOUT THE LATEST BOOK IN THE "IN DEATH" SERIES! IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS BOOK YET, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SKIP THIS EPISODE!*** It's finally here!! Our review of "Payback in Death." We are very happy to say that we all just loved this book! Starting with the first chapter where Eve and Roarke visit Roarke's family in Ireland during the last leg of their 3rd Anniversary Trip. Eve gives Roarke his anniversary present from her: A painting done by Yancy of Eve and Roarke surrounded by Roarke's Irish family, including his own mother, Siobhan, and also including Summerset and Galahad. This chapter really hit us all in the feels in a big way. It's emotional terrorism, but we loved every bit of it. When Eve and Roarke finally make their way back to New York, Eve is called in on a case before they can even get their bags unpacked. Eve's a bit annoyed, but when she sees that the one calling in the murder is Webster, and that the person who is dead is Webster's former boss at IAB, and his mentor and father figure, Captain Martin Greenleaf, Eve can't say no. The murder is set up to look like a suicide, and Eve's not buying it. And since the victim is the former head of IAB, Eve and the gang have to look at a ton of bad cops who might be involved, and the sheer amount of bad cops they look at is hard on everyone, especially Eve and Feeney. They both personally knew a couple of the cops they are looking at (Eve knows one "intimately," if you know what we mean), and there's a really great scene where Feeney comes to Eve just miserable about what he's seeing, and they commiserate over a burger from the auto chef. Eve has a feeling very early on about who could be involved in this murder, so this is one of those books where we aren't shocked by a twist at the end, but follow Eve and the gang along as they figure out how the killer is connected. Eve also has a run in with one bad cop who has it in for Eve and eventually physically assaults her, even punching her in the boob, which is a very low blow, and by the end of the day, everyone at Cop Central is talking about her boob. Some really great moments in this book including Jenkinson passing his "Detective Sergeant" test, Eve going for a run on the treadmill using the VR goggles and encountering Zombies, an update on the "Great House Project," and Webster getting a happily ever after. This book had everything you could want in a really great "In Death" book and we hope you all loved this book as much as we did!

This week: Everyone's Favorite: Possession in Death! AJ doesn't have a theme for this week, either because she just couldn't find one, or she just didn't care. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ For those who were disappointed that Eve never questioned Sylvester Moriarty at the end of the last book, you will be relieved to know that he is questioned at the beginning of this book. Also, people who were disappointed they never saw the BBQ that was mentioned several times in "Indulgence," we now get to see it, with all our favorite characters making an appearance, including Father Lopez and Mavis, Leonardo and Bella, who apparently flew in from London just for the BBQ. Bella is already talking at four months, and we're skeptical about that. Eve drives Father Lopez home from the BBQ, stops to help an injured old lady "Gizi," and subsequently becomes possessed by her spirit because she is dying and wants to make sure she can help Eve find her granddaughter, Beata. Now that Eve is possessed, she can speak Russian, (and insult Summerset in Russian) spout off the recipe for goulash, see dead people (including a woman who thinks Roarke is hot), and has a new tattoo of a peacock feather on her ankle. But it doesn't stop her from having sex with Roarke. After a short investigation, Eve decides she knows who the killer is, and sets up an op to save Beata. She brings Father Lopez in on the op because someone might be Catholic, so... During the rescue, Eve sees more dead people and Roarke gets to knock down a wall with a sledgehammer. Gizi's spirit leaves Eve but not before she asks Eve if she would like to keep the gift of seeing and talking to the dead. Eve says no thank you, which is a wise decision. Regardless of the things that we find annoying in this book, we can't deny it's a fun read.

In this episode, we talk to Listener Melanie. Several weeks ago, Melanie sent us an email...complete with a spreadsheet...outlining the ways she felt we may have mischaracterized Summerset as a Dick. It was a really interesting conversation, and Melanie made several really good points about both Summerset and Eve's behavior in the early books. We may not have agreed with all her points, but we concede that both Summerset and Eve are dicks. The end. At about 30 minutes in, Tara has a bit of a Tornado scare, but it ends up being a false alarm, thank goodness. At the end of the episode, we ask Melanie the listener questions, and find out some really interesting things about her. Overall, we really enjoyed this discussion, and we tell Melanie that she is welcome back on the show any time.

In this episode, we review the latest "In Death" installment, "Encore in Death." So, if you haven't read this one yet, you may want to skip this episode. Our overall impressions of this book are that it's good, but not one of the best of the series. We liked it, but didn't LOVE it. There were some really fantastic scenes in this book, as in every book. But we didn't think the murder plot wasn't as interesting as other books. We all pretty much hated Vera from the beginning, but oddly, we don't think Vera is the worst character in this book. Maeve was much worse, and we wanted her to go down for something, too. Great moments like Eve's initial questioning of Vera, Peabody telling Eve about cheesy Christmas movies, Eve giving Peabody 5 minutes to gush about the MLDI home renovation, Eve making fun of the tourist who got her purse snatched, the bank teller who confides in Eve that after she saw the "Icove Agenda," she realized how many people are clones. Possibly the best moment in the book is when Roarke gives Eve her anniversary present early: New "ThinShield" body armor vests for everyone in her bullpen. We also find out the song that Eve and Roarke danced to on their wedding day, and it's none of the songs we talked about on our "We Plan Eve and Roarke's Wedding" episode. AND, Roarke made a major property purchase in Eve's name and we are here for it!

We're going to be honest and say that the reviews for this book were a bit weird. Most of the one or two star reviews were from people super pissed because they bought "Time of Death" which was a compilation (NOT copulation) of three of Nora's previously released novellas. The bad reviewers swear that there was NO indication that "Time of Death" was a compilation, and that they were ripped off. But we also have weird reviews with people being upset that there's satanic stuff, or upset that there was no Feeney, Summerset or Mavis. The good news though is Connie and her husband enjoyed this one, we have someone who thinks that this book was "Quick paced, witty and over far too soon," and we have some high praise for Susan Ericksen. What you may not have known, (and we didn't either until recently) is that apparently, Tara invented "We Review the Reviews"! You'll hear her groundbreaking Amazon review on this episode as well! During our "Podcast Business" section, we talk about some of the commentary we've gotten from listener Melanie Johnson, and how we are currently trying to co-ordinate with her on a day where she can be a guest on the show to defend her position that we have been far too harsh on Summerset.

In this episode, we talk about all the "Creative Threats" that Eve has given to different people in the series. We love them, but we do think there are less of them lately, or else they're a bit softer? We wonder if maybe Nora has decided to back off on these a bit lately due to recent episodes of police brutality? We may be wrong about that (and probably are). It's fiction, after all, and we don't think anyone believes that Eve would ever go through with any of the threats she issues. We have several that are our own favorites and several that are favorites of our listeners and we go over those. Lots of eating of eyes and fingers...and one threat to eat asses, which AJ thought Nora may not have thought through well...:) She also threatens to tie tongues in knots a lot, or choking people with their tongue... or with their balls. Dana says the most frequent threat is the boot up the ass. One threat of Eve dressing Roarke in pink panties and taking pictures, and during her research, Jen looked that quote up on Google and got a lot of gay porn? So she advises against that.

For this week's episode, we are reviewing "Salvation in Death," and the three of us all have very different reactions to this book! First, AJ has a little rant, because she doesn't understand why Eve finds Father López so compelling. She also doesn't understand Eve's easy acceptance of religion/Catholicism. And, truth be told, AJ found this book really kind of boring. Jen disagrees, thinking that Eve would of course be accepting of religion/Catholicism, because, as Jen put it: "She lives in the world." Jen can also understand why Eve might find Father López compelling. Tara feels like in this book, Eve is not really acting like herself. One reason being that Eve never seriously considers López an actual suspect, even though there are many things that make López a great suspect! The theme of this book (In our opinion) is the Seven Deadly Sins which (we find out after Tara looks it up on Google) are: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. Our main bad guy, Lino embodied pretty much all of these, as did our second victim Jimmy Jay Jenkins. There are many times where Lust and Greed and Envy and Pride are mentioned throughout the books. We all find the case a bit confusing and convoluted, (and okay, maybe a little boring) but there are many positives about this book. The Eve and Roarke moments in this book are really great, (even the really awkward car sex scene), we get to se Ariel Greenfield again, and, as she promised in "Creation in Death," she makes Eve an amazing cake which is a depiction of the city of New York. There's also that really great scene where Eve has to break up a fight at a store where two women are fighting over a "Laroche triple-roll bag in Peony." Later, she tells Mira about it, and Mira right away calls the store to ask them to put that bag aside for her so she can purchase it herself. This scene seems random until you take into consideration that it goes perfectly with our "Seven Deadly Sins" theme as it displays: Lust, Greed, Envy, Wrath..maybe Pride too? Roarke is feeling some feelings in this book, and thinking about all the friends he lost. To make him feel better, Eve has Summerset give Sinead a call and ask her to call Roarke so he can ground himself again. It's just really nice to see Eve taking care of Roarke, even though when we review the reviews of this book, we're sure we will see some "Eve's a horrible person" reviews. Those of us who really understand and love Eve can see her growing as a character in this book, and we appreciate it. Also, there's tacos, and we appreciate that, too!

This week we're talking about our favorite party moments! Tara's is the time at Mavis' party in "Rapture in Death" where Roarke assaults Jess Barrow because Jess Barrow is a dick. AJ's favorite party moment is when Eve and Roarke go to Nadine's housewarming in "Connections in Death" where Nadine shows Eve her Oscar, and both Eve and Jake wonder why the Oscar doesn't have "his works." We love the times where Eve has to deal with party planning, and often passes that off on someone else. There's a great scene in "Obsession in Death" where "Lottie" is holding the bullpen hostage, and in the middle of it, Roarke calls Eve, and after Lottie tells Eve not to signal Roarke in any way, but Eve does it anyway by having a normal husband/wife conversation, when Eve and Roarke NEVER have a normal husband/wife confersation! But, Roarke gets the message loud and clear and races down to Cop Central to help take Lottie down. Most everyone's favorite moments are in "Festive in Death," so we talk about that book a lot. This is a very short episode (for us) but hopefully, entertaining as we go into 2023! Have a Happy New Year, Everyone!

Hi, Everyone! In this week's 2+ hour episode, Jen and AJ talk about Eve's nightmares. As you all know, this whole series literally starts with Eve coming out of a nightmare, so it stands to reason that nightmares are a central plot point for this series. The dreams start out very scary and gory and are pretty much all about her killing her father, but then her mother comes into the dreams and Eve has to deal with that. But also, she has to deal with the mind-f**k of her seeing Patrick Roarke in her dreams, and him looking exactly like Roarke. BUT, her dreams can also be very cathartic for her. Like in "Abandoned in Death" when Eve dreams about herself as a child playing on a playground, and Eve telling her younger self, “You're going to get through it, and you're going to be okay.” Or, when she punches Stella in the face. They can also give her answers to some of the puzzles that she has to work out with a case, like in "Concealed in Death" where Eve realizes that Iris' stuffed dog was missing. Even though most of Eve's dreams are scary and/or gory, some are just funny, like the dream Eve had where she was trying to help "The Avengers" fight off the destruction of New York, or "Evil flying babies," or when she saw Roarke as "Spiderman" but with a big "R" on his chest. We go through most of the nightmares in this episode, and in doing so, follow the progression of Eve's continued recovery from her trauma, which is the whole point of this series and a really great thing for us to see.

Here we go, everyone, with our We Review the Reviews episode for "Desperation in Death"! Since this is such a new book, there's not the amount of reviews to choose from that we have with other titles. Still, we find some doozies. Our first reviewer found this book to be the "most unpleasant of all the books." Several reviewers find the book formulaic, yet somehow not? And Eve hasn't grown at all since her past "shows up in every. single. book." and she needs to "get a shrink." Someone who wants to know why people have to ask permission from Eve to go into her office and make themselves a cup of her coffee "Robb's writing is spot on" but somehow the book was "bland and a little disappointing." And..."ferengi? really?" One reviewer from Australia charges that Eve: "handed the defence a gift in this?? Assault during an arrest and violation of rights??" AJ takes that comment and goes off on a rant about actual US laws regarding use of force for police, and we go point by point describing the takedown of Iris Beaty, showing how at no point did Eve violate Beaty's rights according to US law. As we always do, we found a few reviews that praise Susan Ericksen, and one who says: "I hope Nora Robert's is aware of how fortunate she is to have such a fantastic narrator doing her work such justice." (She Does). We read a great review that states "the series is still so fresh, the characters engaging and entertaining, storyline gritty and suspenseful." And end with one who says the book was "Another Grand Slam AGAIN!!!" We had fun with these reviews, and we hope you have fun listening to them!
