#009 -- For people who do not work in education, it’s oftentimes relatively easy to imagine the work of someone who supports teachers—they observe them teach, review lesson plans, review academic data, etc... But it is harder for some people to imagine the work of someone who supports Principals. This week we’re joined by Sean Precious, Regional Superintendent with Denver Public Schools. Sean, himself a former Principal, has supported Principals in different contexts, including with a Charter Management Organization, as well as a large, public, urban school district. Based on all of those experiences, Sean has strong opinions on the most effective ways to support Principals. On today’s episode, Sean and I discuss what the role of someone who supports Principals could be in an ideal situation, what has gone well in the rapid shift to online instruction, and some of Sean’s favorite resources for continuous learning.https://bit.ly/ETepisode09We hope you enjoyed today's episode! There is a teacher shortage nationwide. And it continues to grow each year. Many solutions have been suggested: pay teachers more, offer incentives to pay off student loans, and so forth. Yet, most states are still adding fewer and fewer teachers into the profession each year. This week on Anchored in Education I am joined by Dr. Kyle Thompson, the current Assistant Regional Superintendent and the soon to be Regional Superintendent.  Kyle and I discuss how legislative policies are creating unnecessary hurdles and obstacles for future teachers. Kyle has testified twice before the Illinois House of Representative Education Committee to advocate for bills designed to address the teacher shortage. We not only discuss actions that can be taken to directly address the teacher shortage, but we also talk reasons teachers entered the profession and why these unnecessary barriers are preventing new teacher candidates from becoming anchored in education. Our December guest is Mr. Jean Claude Brizard, former Chief Executive Officer of Chicago Public Schools.  Recently, Mr. Brizard and the CPS Board of Education were in the media spotlight with the 2012 CPS teacher strike.  Prior to his appointment in Chicago, he was Superintendent of Schools for the Rochester City School District (Rochester, NY), a position he held for three years.  Our conversation will focus on the political aspects that both facilitate and hinder leadership and progress in urban contexts. The Chicago Public Schools serves approximately 409,000 students in more than 670 schools. It is the nation's third-largest school system. Every child brings a wealth of talent, gifts, and potential to us,” Mr. Brizard says. “They also bring dreams, aspirations, struggles, and needs. We must embrace that talent and potential and equip every student with an education that draws forth their unique talents (the masterpiece) that lies within each of them. Mr. Brizard's experience also includes a 21-year career as an educator and administrator with the New York City Department of Education. He served as a Regional Superintendent, supervising more than 100 K-12 schools serving over 100,000 students in three New York City geographic districts.
