In this inspiring episode, we're exploring the powerful intersection of music and accessibility with three incredible guests: Dr. Bradley Black, a world-renowned pediatric ophthalmologist and founder of the Vision Through Music program, Makayla, a passionate young musician and student in the program, and Maykaya's mother Joann.  Dr. Bradley Black (he/him) practiced pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is past president of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and the Louisiana Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (LAEPS). He has served on the boards of directors of AAPOS, the Children's Eye Foundation, the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, and LAEPS. He received the Honor Award, Senior Honor Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from AAPOS and the Achievement Award, Secretariat Award, and the Outstanding Advocate Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was elected to the American Ophthalmological Society. In 2024, he received the Parks Silver Medal, the highest honor awarded by AAPOS and CEF-AAPOS. Dr. Black is active in international ophthalmology. He served on the Orbis International Cybersight Medical Advisory Board and has performed and taught pediatric eye surgery in more than thirty countries.  One of his greatest professional achievements to date is founding the Vision Through Music program of the Children's Eye Foundation, which seeks to increase the number of music teachers who work with blind and partially sighted children nationwide. He and his wife, Cindy, have two children and two grandchildren. In his leisure time, you can often find Dr. Black sailing the Gulf of Mexico on his thirty-five-foot sloop.   Makayla Alger (she/her) is a passionate student of the Children's Eye Foundation's Vision Through Music Program (VTM). From an early age, she found joy in singing and playing on her sister's keyboard. She is currently learning violin and will soon begin voice lessons through the VTM program. Makayla lives with a mutation to the TUBB4B gene, which has led to degenerative vision and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Over time, she has lost night vision, experienced a decrease in peripheral vision, and developed nystagmus. Her mother, Joann, vividly remembers taking Makayla to a pediatric ophthalmologist, who determined she would need glasses for life. Initially overwhelmed and unsure whether her young daughter would keep them on, Joann recalls when Makayla looked up at her parents and with a soft voice appreciatively said, “thank you.” From that moment, she never took her glasses off. Joann says the family has gotten creative to make things more accessible at home. Beyond her love of music, Makayla is also the author of “The Way I See It”, a story following Elena, a visually and hearing-impaired red fox who navigates Vermont's scenic trails using her heightened senses. Along her journey, Elena meets many woodland creatures and teaches them important lessons about awareness, kindness, and understanding. Makayla and her mom Joann hope to raise awareness about TUBB4B genetic testing, as well as encourage more research into its progression and ultimately a cure. Paul Hilliard, President of Badger Oil Corporation, has led a wonderful life of generosity and love of community that provides a humbling lesson in being a good steward of God's resources. At 99 years of age, he is sharp and insightful, a true testament to his wisdom and vitality. Paul was 17 when he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps during his Senior year in high school in February 1943, quitting school when he received permission from his mother to join the war effort. He trained to be a gunner, handling machine guns in the back of Douglas SBD Dauntless (Scout Bomber by Douglas Aircraft) planes in air missions conducted in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. SBD was jokingly referred to as “Slow But Deadly.” He flew 45 combat missions and was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in addition to receiving the Air Medal with six bronze stars.  Following his service, Hilliard earned his law degree from the University of Texas before beginning a career in the oil and gas industry. He credits the GI Bill for the opportunities it afforded him and so many other servicemen who would not have otherwise been able to obtain an education. Hilliard exemplifies the selfless spirit and pride of our WWII generation of heroes, as well as the successful ingenuity of a veteran oil and gas entrepreneur.  Known for his self-effacing wit and ability to achieve in spite of a hardscrabble upbringing in Wisconsin, Hilliard has been a successful independent operator and owner of Badger Oil Corporation since 1955 and has seen fit to use his success in business to help others in need. Awarded the Civic Cup in 2003 and the esteemed national Horatio Alger Award in 2009, Paul has also been active in statewide associations working to improve the oil and gas industry, business, and civic endeavors. Paul has also been active in statewide associations working to improve the oil and gas industry, business, and civic endeavors.  In 2015, he received the Circle of Honor Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. His life is the Horatio Alger story. He is, and always be, one of my heroes.”—Boysie Bollinger Paul has been a generous benefactor in causes to help at-risk children learn to read so that they can overcome poverty as he did.  He and his late wife, Lulu, provided $5 million dollars in seed money to start the Paul and Lulu Hilliard Art Museum at UL – Lafayette. Paul has served as a National WWII Museum trustee, and he and his wife, Madlyn, have been two of the Museum's most active advocates and supporters. They have provided transformative support for several Museum initiatives, including acquisition and restoration of artifacts, collection of oral histories, and education programs. In September 2018, Hilliard accepted the position of Board Chair of the museum, focusing on the completion of the its $400 million campus expansion. “Title IX says no person shall be discriminated against on the basis of sex…as measured three different ways, one is equal opportunities to participate, two is equal scholarship dollars between men and women, and third is, they've got to get treated the same way.” Guest Bio: Life-long advocate for access and equality in athletics, internationally recognized legal expert on sports issues, scholar and author Nancy Hogshead has a commitment to equality, using sport as a vehicle for social change.  As one of the foremost exponents for gender equity, she advocates for access and equality in sports participation. Legal issues include sexual harassment, sexual abuse and assault, employment, pregnancy, and legal enforcement under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Her book, co-authored with Andrew Zimbalist, Equal Play, Title IX and Social Change, has received acclaim since its release by Temple University Press. She was the lead author of Pregnant and Parenting Student-Athletes; Resources and Model Policies, published by the NCAA, and her book chapter, The Ethics of Title IX and Gender Equity for Coaches, appears in The Ethics of Coaching Sports; Moral, Social and Legal Issues, edited by Robert L. Simon. Hogshead has testified in Congress numerous times on the topic of gender equity in athletics, written numerous scholarly and lay articles, and has been a frequent guest on national news programs on the topic, including 60 Minutes, Fox News, CNN, ESPN, NPR, MSNBC and network morning news programming. She serves as an expert witness in Title IX cases and has written amicus briefs representing athletic organizations in precedent-setting litigation. From 2003 – 2012 she was the Co-Chair of the American Bar Association Committee on the Rights of Women. She was elected to the editorial board of the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport.  Sports Illustrated magazine listed her as one of the most influential people in the history of Title IX. Hogshead practiced law at the law firm of Holland & Knight, in both their litigation and public law departments. She was a tenured Professor of Law at the Florida Coastal School of Law, where she taught Torts, Sports Law and Gender Equity in Athletics courses for twelve years. Hogshead-Makar had a 30 year history with the Women's Sports Foundation, starting as a college intern, becoming the third President from 1992-94, it's the legal advisor from 2003-10, and serving as a consultant as the Senior Director of Advocacy until 2014.  She earned her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and is an honors graduate of Duke University. Hogshead has received significant awards recognizing her commitment to athletics, including: an honorary doctorate from Springfield College, induction into the Academic All-America Hall of Fame and the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame for the National Association for Sports and Physical Education, and receipt of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators' “Honor Award”. In 2011 she was presented with the National Organization for Women's “Courage Award,” and was inducted into the National Consortium for Academics and Sports Hall of Fame. In 2012 she was awarded the “Title IX Advocate Award” from the Alliance of Women Coaches. In 2014 she was awarded the “Babe Didrikson Zaharias” Award. Hogshead capped eight years as a world class swimmer at the 1984 Olympics, where she won three Gold medals and one Silver medal. Through high school and college dual meets she was undefeated. Other major awards include the Nathan Mallison Award, given to Florida's outstanding athlete, and the prestigious Kiphuth Award, given to the best all-around swimmer nationally. Dr. Pate is a Professor in the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He has held several administrative positions including Chair for the Department of Exercise Science, Associate Dean for Research at the Arnold School of Public Health, and Vice Provost for Health Sciences. Dr. Pate is an exercise physiologist with interests in physical activity and physical fitness in children and the health implications of physical activity. He coordinated the effort that led to the development of the recommendation on Physical Activity and Public Health of the CDC and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) (1995). John has been a practicing broker since 1981 and has owned and operated as many as three offices in Southeast Missouri during his real estate career. John has taught pre and post-license real estate courses since 1988. John has earned the ABR®, ABRM, CRB, CIPS, e-PRO®, GRI, RENE (Real Estate Negotiation Expert) Military, and SRS designations throughout his real estate tenure.  John is a licensed broker in Missouri, Indiana, and Florida. John is also a 1983 Graduate of Southeast Missouri State University for undergraduate studies in business and a 2015 REALTOR® University Master of Real Estate Program graduate.  John's professors awarded him the Capstone Award for his thesis paper from REALTOR® University.   John has earned both REALTOR-Associate and REALTOR of the Year from his local board and received the 2014 Richard A. Mendenhall Leadership Award from Missouri REALTORS and the REBI Hall of Leaders Award in San Francisco, CA, at the NAR Conference.  In 2020, John received the prestigious DREI (Distinguished Real Estate Instructor) from the Real Estate Educators Association. John was also elected by the DREI membership to the DREI Board in 2023 for a three-year term. John has spoken to thousands of real estate professionals in over 25 countries throughout his speaking career.  He is the author of eight books and creator of the “5-Minutes Series for Real Estate Agents,” Cengage Learning, with thousands of copies sold. With an undergraduate, Masters Degree in Architecture & a minor in Electronic Design from SCAD she brings to her work an avant garde streak & a strong commitment to the triple bottom line.   An environmentalist, she adopted and actively advocates for the 2030 challenge and is a huge proponent of high performance buildings. Her focus includes “Eliminating Toxins”, with Indoor Air Quality as a specialty. She has actively spoken on the topic of Indoor air quality as it relates to the practice of Architecture since 2009 all over the west coast and is an industry expert on “Healthy Building Practices”. She has served on the Council of Experts at USGBC's California Chapter on Indoor Air Quality and has served as a liaison for the Green Schools' Committee for USGBC State, primarily focusing on legislative decisions affecting Environmental Sustainability in the past. The Ellis Island Medals of Honor have been presented since 1986 and is one of our nation's most prestigious awards. Each year its recipients are read into the Congressional Record. The Medal celebrates inspiring Americans who are selflessly working for the betterment of our country and its citizens. Many distinguished and diverse diverse Americans have received the award including Presidents Ronald Reagan and Joe Biden, as well as six other Presidents of the United States. Lucia's family immigrated from Italy and she went on to become an achiever, breaking ground for women in the entertainment industry, and has been involved in promoting youth incentive programs and speaking out against human trafficking. Lucia is a two-time Emmy Award-winning Producer whose years of experience scaling the heights of the entertainment industry has won her the respect, accolades, and camaraderie of socialites, business moguls, and celebrities who share her passion for affecting positive change around the country and around the world. ACEC member firm HDR is showcasing three projects that earned honors at this year's EEA Awards - one Grand Award and two Honor Award-winning projects - the Hugh Leatherman Terminal in Charleston, SC, the City of Billings Nutrient Upgrade, Expansion and Improvements project in Billings, MT, and the I-579 Open Space Cap in Pittsburgh, PA.

Architectural glass artist Elizabeth Devereaux traveled across the globe looking for an international education in art and architecture, from San Rafael to Vienna, then Munich. She founded her California studio in 1969, and more than 50 years later is an accomplished architectural glass artist with works installed all over the US and Canada.  Devereaux states: “In an architectural setting, I always like to work in a site-specific way, noting the place and region itself, as well as the architectural style the artwork is in, the light, the interior and exterior environment. I work collaboratively, which then requires me to listen to the client/committee's story, to define their identity and understand what has meaning for them, and then to synthesize all of the information within my own style and artistic vision.” One of Devereaux's most notable liturgical commissions, Christ Cathedral Memorial Gardens, Garden Grove, California, is located at an architectural pilgrimage destination. The Cathedral buildings are designed by three of the 20th century's most significant architects – Philip Johnson, Richard Neutra, and Richard Meier. The new Memorial Gardens' focus was to be “The Risen Christ” worshiped by two angels. It needed to be highly visible from the exterior, giving reference to life's journey and connecting Baptism (in the Cathedral) to death and resurrection (in the Mausoleum). Relying on reflective light, 24-carat gold luster paint allowed the windows to be clearly seen from the Cathedral opposite, as well as in the Mausoleum, which was flanked by 12 large panels of amber stained and shaded clear glass. These 12 panels were fabricated by Derix Studio in Germany; the rest of the commission was fabricated in Devereaux's Chico studio. Forty-four clerestory windows created in mouthblown cobalt streaky on clear German Lamberts glass link the interior rooms. Between each are prisms referring to the tower at the Cathedral. In another major liturgical project, at Our Lady of New Clairvaux Abbey, Vina, California, Devereaux expressed The Cistercian charism of simplicity in a contemporary style with a reference to its ancient history. The new monastery at New Clairvaux was originally a 12th-century monastery in Northern Spain. In the early 1930s William Randolph Hearst bought the monastery and imported it to California. Shortly afterwards, the Great Depression and World War II made it impossible for Hearst to build it, and he deeded it to the City of San Francisco. There it languished for 40 years behind the De Young Museum until Father Thomas Davis, a young monk newly arrived to the New Clairvaux Monastery, heard the story and had a vision of acquiring the stones for the new Abbey. The Abbey consulted with British and Spanish historians, and hired German stone carvers to re-form and recut the missing stones. The art glass in 12-century European Cistercian monasteries is abstract, simple, and often soft amber and white in color. Devereaux's windows appear simple at first glance, but in fact, are complex in their fabrication. The Fremont Antique glass was custom mouthblown to shade from white opak to clear, allowing the exterior landscape to be part of the design. It was also painted and kiln-fired with amber stain, then intersected vertically with handmade prisms. Since the monks worship during the day and night, the artist painted and fired a reflective 24-carat gold luster pattern onto the surface, bringing the translation of New Clairvaux or “Valley of Light” to life. In San Francisco, for Noe Valley Ministry's Coming to the Center window, Devereaux selected triple-flashed, mouth-blown glass, which was etched to the clear layer to portray the constellations. The transition from “sky” to “center” was accomplished by selecting custom blown rose to clear and purple to aqua glass. This allowed the glass to be sprayed and fired with orange luster, creating the subtle transition from lavender to amber. The amber “center” was leaded and laminated front and back with lead “overlay” “branches” to reference beloved artist Ruth Azawa's twig-like cross in the sanctuary. The center spiral links to the labyrinth in the space. Devereaux explains: “I always loved transparency—working with watercolor, silkscreen, overlaying color. When I discovered glass, I realized the incredible aspects of painting with light. Mouth-blown textures and color can be designed to meet direct sunlight and be projected in mysterious ways across the interior space. Or if the window is facing an unwanted view, it is possible to use translucent glass, allowing light in, but not the view or the glare. I also love the use of reflective materials, polished metals, in conjunction with glass, but sometimes mirror, and 24-carat gold, silver, and platinum lusters sprayed and fired onto glass. This allows the window to have a nightlife, different from the day. I also love pattern, making a “logo” or distillation of the meaning of the commission, then repeating it into a fabric woven into the artwork.” Devereaux has always been active in her architectural and liturgical communities, serving on the National Advisory Board of Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art, and Architecture (IFRAA), a Knowledge Community of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) from 2009- 2014 and as a Juror for Faith & Forum/ IFRAA Religious Art & Awards, Seattle, WA, 2005. Her present commission is Dignity French Hospital Swanson Chapel in San Luis Obispo, CA, and includes 700 square feet of laminated art glass. Devereaux and her studio crew – Owen Gabbert, longtime project manager, Marie Swanson, Devereaux's son, Chris Tallant, and nephew, Abraham Devereaux – are responsible for many public art, hospital, and corporate commissions. Though her studio's main focus remains liturgical commissions, every window designed is site specific and custom made for that specific place. He became an Officer of the Order of Leopold II of Belgium in 1994, a member of the Order of Canada in 2001, and a Chevalier in the Ordre National du Quebec in 2005. In 2002, he received the Honor Award from the American College of Sports Medicine. It's been a wild couple of weeks for me and as a result I'm struggling a bit to catch up. After the 5 day regenerative Design course at the Green Rebel farm in Miravet, Spain, then the three day Climate Farming conference at Schloss Kirchberg in Germany, and I'm now on a short break visiting the small farm of a good friend of mine in Dessau between events before a week long team retreat with the Climate Farmers team in Brandenburg. When I get back I've got tree planting events lined up in the Pyrenees and then I'll be facilitating a course in Tuscany on restoring hydrological function to the landscape with Zach Weiss and Lorenzo Costa. Maybe by the end of November things will calm down in time for my partner and I to move into our new property which we were finally able to sign the papers on after a year of paper and admin work! Fewf!All of that is to say though I've got plenty of great interviews lined up for you, I might be a little irregular in releasing the episodes over the next month.But enough about me. This week I'm thrilled to present the first in a two part series exploring the topic of building true resilience in agriculture. Resilience is often thought of as the ability to bounce back from a disturbance or a challenge, but in these two episodes we're going to dig deeper and not only broaden the theory of true resilience, but also to look into case studies of growers and land stewards who are building lasting resilience on their farms. To help me to understand all of this better and to give practical advice that all of us, even those of us that don't work directly with the land can use in our lives, I had a wonderful conversation with Laura Lengnick.Laura is an award-winning soil scientist with 30 years of experience working as a researcher, policymaker, educator, activist and farmer to put regenerative values into action in U.S. food and farming. Her research in soil health and regenerative farming systems was nationally recognized with a USDA Secretary's Honor Award in 2002 and she was a lead author on the 2013 USDA report, Climate Change and Agriculture in the United States: Effects and Adaptation. Since 2015, Laura has led research and planning projects exploring agricultural climate solutions, developed carbon management plans for organizations, and designed and delivered climate risk management workshops for farmers. Laura is also the author of The 2nd edition of her award-winning book, Resilient Agriculture: Cultivating Food Systems for a Changing Climate in which she explores climate change, resilience and the future of food through the adaptation stories of 45 sustainable, organic, climate-smart and regenerative farmers and ranchers across the U.S. In 2021, Laura joined the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming as the Director of Agriculture. Current State and Future: Role of Physical Activity in Public Health - Prof Russell Pate (Pt2) Dr. Pate is Professor in the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He has held several administrative positions including Chair, Department of Exercise Science; Associate Dean for Research, Arnold School of Public Health; and Vice Provost for Health Sciences. Dr. Pate is an exercise physiologist with interests in physical activity and physical fitness in children and the health implications of physical activity. In World War II, an American bomber pilot's combat service was to last for 25 missions. However, most did not survive to see their 10th. In October 1943, John ‘Lucky' Luckadoo began his 22nd mission. The assault on Bremen, Germany was to utilize dense cloud cover to shield the B-17 Flying Fortresses. However, when they arrived, the clouds had disappeared, and 50 American pilots and crew members would lose their lives. Do you use songs to help improve and manage transitions during the day? Songs that young kids enjoy can serve as wonderfully helpful tools to help them transition from one task to the next… How? Well, once they've learned a song and become used to its length, kids are usually happy to get on-board with coordinating their transition timing to align with the end of one task or activity to the start of a new one… which brings so many advantages for everyone, not the least of which is a more orderly and more cooperative learning environment. More good news, about which you're probably aware, but now research is out there to validate: exposure to songs students enjoy together can improve and increase the positivity in a classroom atmosphere (Eerola & Eerola, 2013; Foran, 2009). Another valid reason for incorporating more music into the daily routines of your class is that active engagement with music, like singing along, has been shown to impact the way brains process information, by enhancing perception and comprehension of language and subsequently improving students' ability to communicate with others (Hallam, 2010; Bokiev, Bokiev, Aralas, Ismail, & Othman, 2018), which definitely relates to, and supports, SEL. In addition, several studies have suggested that when kids are exposed to calming music, their feelings of anxiety and stress are often measurably reduced. (Ziv & Dolev, 2013; Goldbeck & Ellerkamp, 2012; Saarikallio & Erkkila, 2007). I don't have to tell you, I'm sure, that introducing any element that reduces feelings of anxiety and stress (that sometimes show up as aggressive behavior in the classroom), can help kids regulate and manage their own emotions in more positive ways, with the result of increasing their capacity to learn and interact more constructively throughout each day. (Foran, 2009). Dr. Pate is Professor in the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. Tony talks with Dr. Ming Wang. As a teenager, Dr. Wang spent 3 years in Chinese concentration camps, but he survived and has gone on to become a millionaire.
