I am a self-defense instructor, and also happen to be completely blind. It is an unfortunate fact that criminals often target people who are perceived, for whatever reason, as "easy targets". The reasons for this perception could range from a person's age, gender, physical size, or, as in my case, a noticeable disability. Regardless of the reason for this perception of vulnerability, assaults against people in these categories tend to be very similar in nature to one another. For this reason, the self-defense principles and techniques I teach are useful to a wide range of individuals, such as senior citizens, women, children, and those with disabilities. After I began losing my vision, I started becoming more interested in personal safety and self-defense. I have since earned my blue belt in the martial art Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and have received my certification as a coach in the OneTouch self-defense system, which was specifically designed for blind people. The more I learn, the more I wanted to be able to share my knowledge with others, so I have started my own business teaching self-defense, called Fight Back. I am located in Villa Park, IL, and I am available to teach private lessons or group classes."Contact Jim Turk for more info: fightbackllc@gmail.comMore About Jim TurkSelf-Defense Instructor Jim Turk Receives 2019 Council Excellence Award About The PulseOn The Pulse, host Joeita Gupta brings us closer to issues impacting the disability community across Canada.Joeita Gupta has nurtured a life-long dream to work in radio! The government has revealed plans to lower class sizes at primary and intermediate school levels. Ratios will go from one teacher to 29 students to one to 28, for years 4 to 8. That means an extra 320 full time jobs to achieve the target by the begining of 2025. The Education Minister hopes the move will halt the downward trend in achievement in maths, reading and writing in those year groups. Shirley Maihi, principal of Finlayson park School in Manurewa, talks to Lisa Owen.
The Principal of New Zealand's largest primary school says the Government's announcement on class sizes is ludicrous. Years 4 to 8 students will have one less classmate, with the teacher student ratio dropping to one teacher to 28 students by 2025. Shirley Maihi of Manurewa's Finlayson Park School told Tim Dower it's not going to effect any change at all. She says it needed to be a bigger step, as bringing it down by one student in two years isn't going to help children's learning. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
National says the move by Labour to tackle class sizes is an attempt to appease unions. The announcement aimed at Years 4 to 8 students, reduces the ratio from one teacher to 29 students, down to 28. It'll be initiated from 2025 and means recruiting 320 more teachers. National Education Spokesperson Erica Stanford told Roman Travers it's less a policy announcement and more a sweetener. She says that's why they did it in the school holidays and if they wanted to make a big announcement, they would have made a big song and dance about it. The importance of an entirely educated population is a belief system barely around 100 years old now. With that always comes a clear division in understanding of how and what is best. Because of this we have public schools, private schools, boarding schools, and charter schools. But what is a charter school? How does it differ from any of these other categories that it seems like we're all well acquainted with and is it better?ReferencesDigest of Education Statistics. If teaching during this pandemic has taught us anything, it's that lowering class size is integral to keeping education sustainable for us and our students. We have always known that reducing class size is fundamental to student achievement, teacher retention and equitable schools, but it's now also become an issue of public health. At last, the City Council is considering a proposed landmark bill that would reduce classroom occupancy limits — and lower class sizes in every school in the years to come. On this special edition of 'On The Record With Michael Mulgrew', we're sharing highlights from the UFT's Class Size Town Hall on November 15th, 2021.

The College Metropolis Podcast: College Admissions Talk for High School Students and Parents
#011 – On this episode, continuing our theme of important questions to ask to uncover the colleges or universities that are a good fit for your kids, we go over questions related to academic fit. No college or university is a good fit for every student, and that is extremely important to consider when it comes to academic fit. Every school has its own academic culture, and that culture brings along with it certain expectations on its students. When there is a good fit between a school's academic culture and a student, that student will get every opportunity to thrive. When there is not a good fit, a student will find it difficult to simply do well. That is not something any parent wants for a kid. We will go over different questions that will allow you to help your kid identify schools that offer them a good academic fit. You can contact us on our homepage at collegemetropolis.com, by leaving us a voice message, or by sending us an email through our contact link at the bottom of the page. You can also find the show notes for this episode at https://collegemetropolis.com/11. We will be very grateful if you would write a great review for our show and leave us a 5-star rating. That would really help us tremendously. Thank you!
