What if the faith you were raised in wasn't chosen but programmed? Whether you're questioning everything or doubling down on your beliefs, this landmark 200th episode is for you. Monte Mader's journey from Christian nationalist-in-training to spiritual deconstructionist isn't an attack it's an invitation. An invitation to examine what you inherited, what you believe, and why. No matter where you land, this conversation might challenge something you've never dared to question and that's exactly why you need to hear it.Spirituality can be a powerful source of comfort, connection, and personal growth but when faith is distorted by fear, control, or coercion, it can leave deep emotional wounds. Religious trauma doesn't come from belief itself, but from environments where questioning is punished, conformity is demanded, and individuals especially children are not given the right to consent. This kind of trauma often shows up as chronic guilt, anxiety around “disobedience,” fear-based obedience, or a loss of personal identity. Whether you've grown up in a high-control religious group or entered one later in life, warning signs may include black-and-white thinking, spiritual manipulation, isolation from non-believers, and teachings that prioritize hierarchy over compassion. It's important to remember: religion is not inherently harmful but unchecked power within it can be. If you're questioning your experience, you're not alone. Resources like Reclamation Collective, The Religious Trauma Institute, and Dr. Marlene Winell's Recovery from Religion offer education, support, and healing communities for those navigating spiritual abuse or religious deconstruction. Healing is possible, and your story is valid. What This Episode Covers:Monte's personal turning point: the moment her belief system crackedThe mental health toll of religious trauma and spiritual fear in childhoodHow Christian nationalism shaped her worldview—and why she walked awayThe psychological impact of purity culture on women's identity and self-worthWhy “submission,” obedience, and modesty were never about holinessThe danger of unquestioned authority in faith-based systemsHow spiritual teachings can be twisted to uphold patriarchy and white supremacyThe difference between faith and fear—and how to tell which one's guiding youWhat the Bible actually says (and doesn't) about women, sexuality, and powerWhy reclaiming curiosity is the key to healing religious traumaA call for compassion, critical thinking, and honest self-examination—no matter what you believe LIKE, SUBSCRIBE & SHARE your thoughts in the comments!__________________↳ YouTube↳ Apple Podcast↳ Spotify↳ Instagram↳ Tiktok↳ Facebook__________________Patrick Custer – Host↳ Instagram: @thepatrickcuster↳ TikTok: @thepatrickcuster↳ YouTube: @thepatrickcuster↳ Facebook: @thepatrickcuster↳ Website: linktr.ee/patrickcusterMonte Mader – Guest↳ Insta: @montemader↳ Facebook: @themontemader↳ Youtube: @montemader↳ Tiktok: @montemader↳ X: @montemader__________________Promises Behavioral Health – Treatment for addiction, mental health/trauma:↳ Admissions: (888) 648-4098↳ Insta: @promises_bh↳ URL: www.promisesbehavioralhealth.comMental Health America:↳ URL: www.mhanational.org

Second Wave Fundamentalism is a term acknowledging that we can leave fundamentalist spaces, but they do not always leave us. How do we recognize when we are creating the same pattern—and the same spaces—we tried to leave behind? And how do we care for ourselves, and our own trauma healing, so we don't migrate toward, and recreate, the unsafe communities we fought so hard to escape? In episode #69, we talk with Dr. Laura Anderson, co-founder of the Religious Trauma Institute, about the ways that Evangelical structures set up the sixth deadly sexual sin, “Don't say no”, especially to your “God given gender roles”. In part 2 of our interview, Laura talks with us about the devastating implications of “Don't say no”, including: The involvement of guilt and shame (10:45) The ways that our bodies respond to high control religion (17:20) The distinction between acute and complex trauma (20:45) The first steps of healing (34:15) Healing in relationships (40:30) And we close the episode with two tips for Relationship 101 (53:45): Pause. Julia explains, “Create some time between an ask and a response, particularly from a partner.” Cultivate intimacy outside of sexuality. Let's heal together!
“In purity culture, both men and women are hypersexualized and then also supposed to be asexual at the same time,” explains Dr. Laura Anderson, cofounder of the Religious Trauma Institute. In short, the expectation is that men are expected to say yes to all things sexual, and women are expected to say and embody the word, no. The sixth deadly sexual sin captures the practice of rigid gender roles. Men are expected to be dominant. Women are expected to be submissive. Don't say no to those gender roles. We talk about the pressures on men and women to say yes to these particular roles, the ensuing paralysis that creates, from simple decisions to longer-term decisions, like dating relationships, and the competitiveness between women and men that this culture creates.

This past July marked 5 years of publishing Exvangelical. In this minisode, I describe my new funding/listener support model. Read the full post here. When you support the show via Substack, I will donate 25% of net revenue to organizations that serve populations harmed by white evangelicalism. Those organizations are: White Homework, The Religious Trauma Institute, and REAP (The Religious Exemption Accountability Project). Support the show at $8/month and receive access to ad-free feeds of Exvangelical and Powers & Principalities, and supporter-exclusive writing at The Post-Evangelical Post, with more perks to come in 2022. Learn more at The Post-Evangelical Post. Why this model? Because I think it's the right thing to do. I am building this from the ground-up with no outside funding, and have an opportunity to build a business model that includes reparative economics from the beginning. My work focuses on the personal & social impact of white evangelicalism. By committing to donate a significant percentage of my net revenue to organizations that serve communities that have been historically harmed by white evangelicalism, I am able to quite literally put my money where my mouth is. Further, I know that I cannot (and should not) try to speak to every potential audience—but I can help to finance the work of others who are better equipped than me to do so. I also acknowledge that the work I do is sensitive, and as a cis white man asking for direct support, it may activate some traumas that my own potential audience of supporters has. So long as we remain a capitalist society that does not provide universal basic income nor universal health care, that will remain an unavoidable tension and reality when I seek direct payment for my output. I hope to address some of that tension through this model. This model isn't perfect, but it is within my capacity to start here and in this manner. Thanks for listening. New episodes coming soon! Brad speaks with Dr. Laura Anderson, founder of the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery and co-founder of the Religious Trauma Institute. They discuss the nature of religious trauma, why it can be hard for individuals to label it trauma, and how it can be treated. One of the issues for victims of religious trauma is the absence of a clear cut "before" and "after" that indicates when and how the traumatic event happened. Their discussion addresses the specific contours of high demands on sexual purity within religious frameworks and the traumatic effects this can have years and even decades after one leaves the community. I met Laura on Instagram through her work educating and nurturing survivors of religious trauma. Over the years she's become a trusted friend and an incredible resource on all things trauma-healing. I wanted her for the show because of the volume of thoughtful, conscientious content she generates along with being a full-time therapist and running a business. Laura's a working writer extraordinaire and I'm excited to share her with podcast listeners. Here's more about her: Laura Anderson is a Licensed Psychotherapist with a private practice in Nashville, TN and an Abuse and Trauma Resolution Coach for clients outside of Tennessee. Her primary clientele deal with complex trauma including intimate partner violence, sexual abuse and assault and religious trauma. Laura heads the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery, is the co-founder of the Religious Trauma Institute and received her PhD with her research focused on the experience of living in a healed body after sexual trauma. Laura is the author of two educational manuals: one on the topic of domestic violence and the other for clinicians and other healers regarding religious trauma, including how to work with clients who are hoping to heal from religious abuse and trauma. When she's not working or writing, Laura enjoys spending time with her dog, Phoebe, hiking, being outdoors and spending time with her friends. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/working-writer-podcast/support

My guest this week is Troy Moore-Heart. Troy grew up in an Evangelical family in Texas and described his childhood self as a “true-believing born-again Christian” who was baptized by his father at 6 in his grandmother's church. Troy experienced religious trauma, the natural childhood fears given the purported reality of a spiritual realm all around him. Later in life, when he acknowledged his sexuality he “fervently believed [he] was going to hell.” When he eventually came out to his family he needed to put up healthy boundaries. Troy started to call himself an agnostic and not an atheist for fear of losing his relationship with his family. After marrying as an adult, he came to terms with his religious trauma and anti-queer shame. He discovered secular humanism as “an ideological and moral home.” Today, troy calls himself a progressive humanist, and he is focused on transformative justice. He is becoming a humanist celebrant. He supports projects like the Southern Poverty Law Center's Y'all Means All and the Trevor Project. Troy also supports the thriving secular therapy community that is growing around trauma-informed therapy, including the Religious Trauma Institute and the Reclamation Collective. Troy requests that you consider signing the Southern Poverty Law Center's “Y'all Means All” pledge. “It's become a galvanizing slogan to promote LGBTQ inclusion and advocacy in rural Southern communities.” Links Instagram https://www.instagram.com/troy.moore.heart/ Y'all Means All http://www.yallmeansall.com The Trevor Project https://www.thetrevorproject.org/ Religious Trauma Institute https://www.religioustraumainstitute.com/ Reclamation Collective https://www.reclamationcollective.com/ American Humanist Association https://americanhumanist.org/ Interact Full show notes https://gracefulatheist.com/2021/02/14/troy-moore-heart-yall-means-all/ Deconversion How To https://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/ Attribution "Waves" track written and produced by Makaih Beats http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Makaih_Beats Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/us/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gracefulatheist/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gracefulatheist/support
