#40 The Virtue of Selfishness

Welcome to the World

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2025 35:17

One of the worst things you could be in a cult is selfish. Pursue a career? Selfish. Go to college? Selfish. Skip a meeting because you're too exhausted to feign interest? Selfish. When you're handed the grandiose mission of saving the human race from Armageddon, even a tiny spark of personal joy starts to feel like a moral failure. But now you're out. You survived. And for the first time, you can do anything you want. The only problem? You've never been allowed to want anything for yourself. It feels weird. It feels wrong. You feel guilty. (Which, of course, is by design.) In this episode, we're going to deconstruct and recalibrate the idea of "selfish"—and explore why taking care of your own needs isn't just okay… it's essential. For your healing, and for the people you love. We'll cover: How high-control religion weaponizes "selflessness" to keep you obedient Why everything we do—including “selfless” acts—is actually motivated by self-interest (and that's not a bad thing) The beautiful irony: how prioritizing your joy makes you more generous, more grounded, and more whole This is your permission slip to want things, try things, and be a little gloriously selfish—for your own sanity, healing, and yes, the joy of eventually giving back from a full cup. Today, I walk you through the fool proof blueprint I mapped out myself to climb out of that hole every single time, one I have walked many clients through successfully. Essentially, the challenge of learning things most people learned in high school at the age of 35.  Here's the thing, you can't skip the mess. The mess builds the muscles. But we've put together some of the most common lessons learned for all you late bloomers that will hopefully make the leveling up process just a little bit easier.  In this episode, we'll be starting, as usual, with the mess left to us by the cult, then moving on to the shame of feeling inexperienced, the most common pitfalls we'll likely fall into, and why it might be a good idea to fall into them anyway

Prior to my work with ex-JWs, I would generally encounter clients with parents on the narcissistic spectrum maybe around 20% of the time. Once I started working with ex-JWs, that number went up to about 80%. This is no cute coincidence. There's a pattern here, and we spend this entire episode exploring that pattern in more detail, not only in how it presents in those on this spectrum, but also in the way the same characteristics can be seen in the organization itself, as a narcissistic entity.

Next, I turn to Alice Miller's book The Drama of the Gifted Child as a way of thinking about how children are often treated with a lack of respect and thus traumatised. Finally, I turn to James Dobson to work out the ways in which trauma and violence are part of most Evangelical's upbringing.

On this episode, I talk with Dr. Laura Anderson: therapist, trauma resolution and recovery coach, writer, educator, and creator, about her vast expertise in Religious Trauma. We shape the conversation around different facets of her newly published book: When Religion Hurts You: Healing From Religious Trauma and the Impact of High Control Religion. This is a subject I have wanted to discuss in depth on the show for quite some time, as healing from religious trauma has been a significant aspect of my own mental health journey. Laura and I discuss some of the nuances of religious trauma (such as purity culture, fundamentalism, and abusive dynamics of power and control) through the lens of our own personal experiences, but also broaden the discussion into psychoeducation about trauma in general, and dismantling some of the more common misnomers. I hope this conversation is helpful and healing to anyone who can relate.  CW: discussion of detailed themes of religious trauma throughout  Follow Laura's work and various projects here! Psyche Magic Patreon, Website, Socials and more! NEW 1:1 Dream Coaching! In this podcast episode, we talk about religious trauma and high-control religion We were interested to learn more about how therapists can support religious trauma survivors, so we reached out to an expert, Anna Clark Miller, to share her wisdom. What is religious trauma? ·      Complex trauma over a long period of time ·      Impacts to the nervous system ·      Traumatic beliefs about religion and the after life ·      Following rules and conforming to a religious group's idea of how someone should live What mistakes do therapists make when working with religious trauma survivors? ·      Therapists becoming the client's new spiritual authority ·      Clients using therapy to tell them how to think and live ·      Clients need to own themselves and their own minds, not work to please the therapist What does healing after leaving a “high control” religion look like? ·      The loss of so much, including social support, identity, etc. ·      Complex PTSD healing ·      How will I fit into the world? How will I talk with people? ·      Building hope for someone who is needing to completely remake their life and identity ·      The client needs to create a sense of safety within themselves ·      You can't “rip off the Band-Aid” with leaving a high control religious group ·      Helping clients with their judgment around their emotions (starting with observation before judging if it is good or bad) ·      Working with clients to examine their beliefs (over time) What is included in the treatment for religious trauma survivors ·      Noticing one's body ·      Exploring and reimagining healthy relationships ·      Identity work ·      Deconstruction of topics based on what the client is thinking, feeling, etc. ·      Addressing spiritual bypassing ·      Not just “mindfulness” due to concerns about secular psychology Stay in Touch with Curt, Katie, and the whole Therapy Reimagined #TherapyMovement: Our Linktree: https://linktr.ee/therapyreimagined Modern Therapist's Survival Guide Creative Credits: Voice Over by DW McCann https://www.facebook.com/McCannDW/ Music by Crystal Grooms Mangano https://groomsymusic.com/

You'll find out in this episode.  Join me as I sit down with Lindsay Poelman, my friend, and fellow coach who helps others become trauma-informed. You'll hear Lindsay's story of checking the societal boxes of education, marriage, family, and a good job that supposedly lead to security and a happy life and then through her journey from her husband's mental breakdown to her process of self-recovery, healing, and intuitive reclamation. She imparts how a trauma-informed approach has helped her reconnect with herself and navigate the complexities of life.Throughout our conversation we touch on trauma and grief enveloped in the lost expectation of what life should be. We also dive into high-demand/high-control religions and the system of patriarchy within those cultures touching on the internalized oppression and the revolutionary act of trusting our own knowing. We go from discussing the importance of compassionate self-recognition to the dangers of self-gaslighting and self-denial.  We explore the importance of creating a safe space for ourselves and others. The episode closes on a note of releasing generational trauma and embracing self-acceptance and healing. Cyndi is a former Jehovah's Witness and today you are going to hear her talk about the painful cost she paid in leaving that religion, and the many wonderful things she has created – and is continuing to create – as a result of that pain. This is one of those interviews that reminds me why I do this whole podcsasting thing – because I have learned so much from so many people over the years – and there is always so much more to learn.   Like this whole thing that Cindy brings up about Heart Math – bringing balance between heart and mind - a tool that can help people better deal with conflict in life. That sounds like a pretty good tool, doesn't it? Did you know that questions themselves can be tools that work in similar ways?  Even having the freedom to ask questions – to explore the answers – and to keep on questioning and keep on exploring.   For example, some of the questions we ask and explore in this episode are: What are neurons?  What do they do in my brain?  What do they do in my heart? How do any of these neurons impact my daily life? How can I become more aware?  Once I am more aware, can I influence my neurons – could I learn to flex my neurons the way I flex my muscles?  What is Self-love, unconditional love – is love really actually  a real thing that actually exists? What happens when someone becomes a slave to their fears? What happens when someone learns to trust instead of only fear?   Is there a difference between shunning vs. showing tough loveWhat does it mean to live life on autopilot vs. taking control?  (Do you feel any heart-healing yet from any of these questions?)

My guest today is Cyndi Markey who used to be a Jehovah's Witness. Did you know that Jahova's witnesses' cannot celebrate birthdays? They cannot socialize with people outside of their church family unless it's for work or school. Cyndi shares with me about how growing up women and children were to be seen and not heard. In High School Cyndi was able to take a class that was not an approved class from the church. She loved her teacher and he taught her critical thinking skills. She later received a scholarship but couldn't accept it as higher education was frowned upon. At 18 years old she met a guy that she loved and as nature would have it, they had sex. Cyndi was given a public reproof in front the of the church for her sin and if you were not shown to be sorry enough, you would be ex-communicated from the church. She had been told that if she disassociated herself before she was dis-fellowshiped that it would be better for her as she could still be with her family. She learned quickly that this was not the case, in fact this was much worse. Cyndi moved to Tennessee and her family followed her, she was stalked by her family and members of her church as they were trying to save her soul.  She moved from Tennessee to Arizona and then to Chicago to live with her grandmother. In Chicago she tried to establish some sort of normalcy. To her normalcy looked like establishing routines, getting a car, a job, getting friends and having a sense of community. As Cyndi tried to unpack the previous years of her life it was painful and she attempted to take her life at 21 years old. She later married a man, divorced and then had a few other marriages. She asked herself, "Why can't I find the keys to happiness?" This question propelled her into finding her healing. Cyndi breaks down finding happiness and yourself in 4 steps:1. Know Yourself2. Trust3. Teach4. Love SelfYour heart knows, Cyndi shares. Build your own resilience. Did you know there are more neurons in the heart than there are in your brain? Cyndi is now a heart math practitioner and shares some fascinating information about the power of the heart.
