Today we are joined by Andrew Pledger to talk about the financial burden that going to a religious college/university can cause. We get into not only the cost of these institutions but the extended control they have over all aspects of someone's life, even when it's the time in life where you're developmentally ready to have more freedom. Andrew shares his story with us about how he chose to go to Bob Jones University, what was required when he got there, the rules he had to follow and the financial consequences he had when he didn't follow the rules. In this episode, we dive into the experiences of Daisy, who was raised in the IFB movement and is a stay-at-home daughter. She was forced to attend BJU in 2008, right after the death of her best friend. Despite her plea to take time off to grieve, she was pushed into an environment where she was labeled a "trouble student" from day one. Unaware of her autism at the time, Daisy grappled with academic struggles and navigating the toxic culture of BJU. She was subjected to bullying, scrutiny, and sexual harassment due to her body size. After enduring two years of multifaceted abuse, Daisy was left emotionally numb and was back under the absolute control of her parents. Leah Worley's time at BJU was marked by an invasive surveillance regime and a suffocating culture of authoritarianism. Targeted for her appearance, she found herself under constant scrutiny, with every aspect of her identity dissected and judged under the unforgiving lens of the university's rigid moral compass. Leah recounts chilling episodes of being stalked, publicly shamed, sexually harassed, and subjected to relentless intimidation by authority figures determined to break her down. Yet, amidst this turmoil, Leah's narrative is also one of awakening and empowerment. She describes the turning point when she decided to take control of her life, employing strategies to evade undue surveillance and reclaim her autonomy. This episode is a rallying cry for all those who have felt the weight of coercive control, a testament to the power of personal agency, and a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and renewal are possible.Andrew Pledger's LinksFacebook Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1153866318625322/Join my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/4ndrewpledgerMy Substack: https://speakingupandrewpledger.substack.com/Social Media: https://andrewpledger.mypixieset.com/links-Music: https://www.purple-planet.com Hosted on Acast. The report shows Bob Jones University responding to rape and abuse claims with woeful ignorance of state law, a near-complete lack of training in psychology and trauma counseling best practices, and an overarching campus culture that blames women and girls for any abuse they suffer, and which paints all sexuality-from rape to consensual sex-as equivalent misdeeds.Andrew Pledger's LinksFacebook Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1153866318625322/Join my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/4ndrewpledgerMy Substack: https://speakingupandrewpledger.substack.com/Social Media: https://andrewpledger.mypixieset.com/links-Music: https://www.purple-planet.com Hosted on Acast. Part 2 of my interview with Andrew Pledger. This episode will focus on Andrew's experience with conversion therapy, how he found support exiting fundamentalism, his expulsion from BJU, and the work he's doing healing and speaking out. Andrew was raised in a fundamentalist Christian cult and realized in his youth that he was gay. He attended Bob Jones University, which is a fundamentalist Christian college with a chilling history of abuse. While there, Andrew was bullied, harassed, tailed by college employees, and subjected to conversion therapy. In his junior year Andrew was expelled from BJU for publicly denouncing fundamentalism. Andrew is healing and working hard to spread awareness of religious abuse. His new podcast, "Surviving Bob Jones University: A Christian Cult" is exposing BJU's racist and abusive legacy. Andrew's story is of learning to honor your inner voice and follow your intuition, even when everything and everyone around you is telling you it's wrong. Andrew Pledger grew up in a Christian fundamentalist cult (IFB) that led him to attend Bob Jones University. He knew he was gay, and he knew things were not right with the faith that criminalized his very existence. But as a young man, he had no options to escape his family's control or the bizarre, abusive rules of BJU. At first, Andrew tried to put his head down, follow the rules, and get out with a degree. But BJU, a global pandemic, and his own development as a human made that impossible. He pushed back, got expelled, and has been speaking out ever since. Through it all, Andrew found his voice, and he's using it to help bring healing to survivors and attention to the dangers of these christian institutions that harm so many people. Andrew is the creator and host of Surviving BJU, which is set to premier on August 23. You can also listen to Andrew's previous podcast, Speaking Up. Hannah Strickland grew up in the PCG from birth until the age of 15. The organization seemed truly malevolent to them, as it appeared to exploit the less fortunate to provide a lavish lifestyle for the leadership and their headquarters family. Over time, many from their generation decided to leave, but their family, with the exception of their mother, remained entrenched in the cult. The PCG functioned as a doomsday cult, fixated on the imminent return of Christ, using fear as a tool to enforce compliance and belief in their fabricated beliefs.Become a Patreon member HERE and access all bonus episodes + other benefits. https://www.patreon.com/4ndrewpledgerConnect with Andrew Pledger through social media, and his website. https://andrewpledger.mypixieset.com/links Hosted on Acast. Andrew Pledger is a survivor of a high control religious environment. Raised in the IFB (Independent Fundamental Baptist) church, he experienced trauma and internalized homophobia due to the system's teachings that being queer was demonic and needed to be prayed away. Andrew recognizes the harm caused by such religious environments, where individuals are blamed and shamed for any issues they face, while the system itself remains untouchable. He highlights the psychological and emotional abuse faced by queer individuals who may undergo conversion therapy or be subjected to self-hatred. Understanding the process of indoctrination, Andrew acknowledges the courage it takes to question and leave these systems. He calls for the dismantling of abusive systems, encouraging others to leave and reclaim their sense of self. Andrew emphasizes the importance of seeking support when leaving such environments in order to protect one's mental health and successfully embark on a journey of healing and self-discovery. I dig into the psychology of mankind's search for truth, and how cults prey on this drive. Join me as I draw from the wisdom of ancient thinkers and modern philosophers to navigate the various theories of truth. Together, we will examine the notions of correspondence, coherence, and pragmatism, seeking to grasp the essence of what it truly means for a statement or belief to be considered true. We'll ponder the timeless questions: Can truth be objective, or is it a subjective construct? Deborah Grace spent the better part of her life writing for the legitimacy of the scriptures, but it was in those writings that the truth began to surface. Having been told numerous times over the years that she would one day write a book, Crucifying the Bible is her first published book and the last point of contention she ever imagined taking on. Although controversial, Grace found the process to be cathartic and another layer of closure to her past journey in faith; healing many old wounds inflicted by religion and finding a sense of validation as she connected with others who shared similar stories in her research. Deborah is currently writing her second book.As an INTJ, she is careful with her choices, detailed in her work, introspective in her personal growth, and strives to finish strong. Her tagline is to be a better person today than yesterday and an even better person tomorrow than today.Deborah with her husband Mark and Yorkie Tank in Georgia. In her spare time, and in addition to writing, she enjoys learning new things, traveling with her husband, and a good glass of Italian wine. TRIGGER WARNING (Suicide, Abuse)Hello, I'm your host Andrew Pledger and this is "Surviving Bob Jones University: A Christian Cult."I grew up in fundamentalist Christianity, specifically the Independent Fundamental Baptist cult. I was homeschooled my entire life to be indoctrinated into this environment. I was subjected to psychological, spiritual, and emotional abuse. I experienced religious trauma from abusive theology on hell, the end times, purity culture, sexuality, and human nature. As a queer person, I experienced so much trauma from their hateful and violent speech towards the LGBTQ+ community and also harm from authoritarian parents. Fundamentalist Christianity was my whole world and I ended up at Bob Jones University. I was at BJU for 3.5 years from 2018-2021. While at Bob Jones I struggled with my mental health from religious trauma, sexual repression, and minority stress. I was driven to the point of nearly committing suicide from my traumas in this system of control. I knew I could not get the help I needed in this environment so I searched outside the group. I was able to connect with people on the outside who would eventually get me out of this cult. Published March 22, 2022 from https://andrewpledger.mypixieset.com/my-story/(*Trigger Warning - Topics of depression, trauma, abuse and suicidal ideation) Hello, my name is Andrew Pledger, and this is my story of religious trauma. My story is long and complex which is why I've been working on a book. This entry will leave out many details and cover the general overview of my experiences, and help people understand how I got here. "Religious trauma is similar in symptoms to Complex-PTSD. Symptoms of RT Negative beliefs about others Low self-esteem Struggle with emotional regulation Depression, anxiety, grief, and anger NightmaresDisassociation, flashbacks Lack of pleasureFeeling isolated Feeling empty, lost, or directionless Reduced critical thinking Feeling out of place or like you don't belong According to Restoration Counseling, Religious Trauma Syndrome is often caused for several reasons by different people. Many people experience RTS as a result of an authoritarian religion or faith community. Individuals suffering from RTS may be struggling with black-and-white thinking, irrational beliefs, difficulty trusting themselves, low self-esteem, or feeling indebted to a group of people. Skewed views of sex, discipline, emotional regulation, relationships, and self-expression are usually present in toxic religious environments" (Source: Restoration Counseling).- Andrew Pledger(Excerpt taken from https://andrewpledger.mypixieset.com/my-story/)Find AndrewFacebookWebsiteInstagram〰️〰️Shanny

Andrew Pledger is a religious trauma survivor who was raised in fundamentalist Christianity. He has been homeschooled his entire life for the purpose of indoctrination. His parents would only pay for a Christian university, and he chose Bob Jones University. Andrew kept his sexuality a secret until his mental health declined due to repressing emotions, sexuality, and religious trauma. For his last year of college, he created a photo series that depicted religious trauma. To bring awareness to religious trauma; he appeared on Josh Harris's IGTV show to talk about his photo series. Bob Jones was made aware of the video, and he was expelled the last semester of his college career. These experiences have inspired him to pursue psychology to help religious trauma survivors. He is now on a mission of using social media to share his story and bring awareness to religious trauma. ----------------------Content Warning: Discussion of Suicidal Ideation--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In this intimate and revealing conversation Andrew shares with Rachel his journey of leaving Christian fundamentalism explaining how the deeply embedded religious trauma caused undue suffering and eventually forced him to leave the church. Throughout the discussion, Rachel provides insights from a psychological perspective pointing out experiences commonly shared by recent survivors of religious trauma and coercive control. Before You Go: In this unique outro segment, Rachel is once again joined by Andrew who shares some life updates and explains how the recent Supreme Court rulings have soured his recent escape from Christian fundamentalist control. Andrew Pledger was born in a fundamentalist Christian home. He was home schooled and fully immersed in religion from a very young age. When he began to question things in his teen years, he came to some conclusions that didn't quite line up with what he had been taught. He broke free from his religion and came out to the world as part of the LGBTQ+ community in a very dramatic and public way. Now Andrew is an activist, writer and podcaster helping to bring awareness about spiritual and religious abuse and trauma. He's working on a book about his experiences and also hosts a podcast called....Yep you guessed it, Speaking Up with Andrew Pledger.Follow Andrew on social media:www.liinks.co/4ndrewpledgerListen to Andrew's Podcast:https://anchor.fm/andrew-pledgerSupport the show

CW Mental health and depression This week's guest is Andrew Pledger. Andrew has spent nearly his entire life in the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church—where the KJV rules and women do not. Andrew was homeschooled K-12 with a mildly white Christian nationalist curriculum, no sex education and no diverse friendships. For years, Andrew's mental health suffered, but there were no resources for him. He was told that he wasn't “reading the Bible enough” and “needed to get closer to God.” In college, Andrew knew he needed professional help but at a fundamentalist Christian college, there was only “biblical counseling”. The first two years were excruciating. Eventually, however, with a little community and a lot of research, Andrew took his mental health into his own hands. He started asking difficult questions about the Bible, and it was not long before the foundations began to crumble. Since leaving Christianity, Andrew has lived out secular grace. He is spreading awareness about toxic religion and working toward becoming a religious trauma therapist. His personal experience of freedom compels him to help others find the same freedom. My name is Andrew Pledger and this is my story. I grew up in the IFB cult and was homeschooled my whole life. I ended up attending Bob Jones University for several years and was expelled before graduation. The expulsion was a result of sharing my story publicly. I'm a religious trauma survivor who brings awareness to RT, spiritual abuse, and mental health. Being a part of the LGBTQ+ community, and experiencing religious trauma has inspired me to pursue psychology to help survivors of religious abuse. In the meantime, I'm a religion recovery coach, I help people grapple with life after religion. I am an influencer on the rise and my vocation started with a controversial interview with Josh Harris (Kissed Dating Goodbye, author). I've appeared on several podcasts like Preacher Boys, This Little Light of Mine, Cheers to Leaving, and Divinely Modern. I'm now on a mission to spread awareness of these issues by using social media platforms. Connect with Andrew Pledger - Linktree: https://www.liinks.co/4ndrewpledger Hosted on Acast. Part 2 of my wonderful interview with Andrew Pledger. I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Andrew Pledger. Andrew is a talented photographer and an aspiring psychologist. He was recently expelled by Bob Jones University after his segment with Joshua Harris had caught the attention of the university leadership team. He has not been discouraged; rather, encouraged to press harder into pursuing his desire to help others release from the power of systems of control. This is Part 1 of a two-part series. I could have spoken with Andrew for days, and he will definitely be back on the podcast! What a remarkable human being.
