In this episode of The Movie Men Podcast, Brady and Emily discuss Wicked: For Good, the continuation of the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. The story picks up after the events of Wicked: Part One, following Elphaba and Glinda as their paths diverge and the consequences of their choices begin to take shape in the Land of Oz. Building on the music, characters, and world introduced earlier, Wicked: For Good brings the second half of the stage story to the screen, exploring themes of power, loyalty, and identity against the backdrop of a familiar but reimagined Oz. Brady and Emily share their reactions to the film and reflect on how it functions as the conclusion to the two-part adaptation. Monte Mader grew up in a Christian Nationalist family where indoctrination and abuse were ever-present. I became a fan of her powerful voice as she eviscerated the lies of Christian Dominionism, Christian Nationalism, and the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) using her knowledge of scripture and Christian ideologies. She has over a million followers on Instagram as a “former alt-right Christian nationalist,” sharing her artistic talent and complex views to dispel widely believed radical Republican doctrine. She brings this knowledge forward and finds ways to bridge communications from her upbringing within a controlling but also highly influential alt-right family from Wyoming. She now shares the deconstruction of her childhood and aspects of her healing journey in several venues, including a new memoir she's working on. Her experiences are also reflected in her music as a “Rocky Mountain rock artist” living in Nashville, Tennessee. She writes songs and performs with her band, The Big Sky. She is so talented and is an inspiration. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What if the faith you were raised in wasn't chosen but programmed? Whether you're questioning everything or doubling down on your beliefs, this landmark 200th episode is for you. Monte Mader's journey from Christian nationalist-in-training to spiritual deconstructionist isn't an attack it's an invitation. An invitation to examine what you inherited, what you believe, and why. No matter where you land, this conversation might challenge something you've never dared to question and that's exactly why you need to hear it.Spirituality can be a powerful source of comfort, connection, and personal growth but when faith is distorted by fear, control, or coercion, it can leave deep emotional wounds. Religious trauma doesn't come from belief itself, but from environments where questioning is punished, conformity is demanded, and individuals especially children are not given the right to consent. This kind of trauma often shows up as chronic guilt, anxiety around “disobedience,” fear-based obedience, or a loss of personal identity. Whether you've grown up in a high-control religious group or entered one later in life, warning signs may include black-and-white thinking, spiritual manipulation, isolation from non-believers, and teachings that prioritize hierarchy over compassion. It's important to remember: religion is not inherently harmful but unchecked power within it can be. If you're questioning your experience, you're not alone. Resources like Reclamation Collective, The Religious Trauma Institute, and Dr. Marlene Winell's Recovery from Religion offer education, support, and healing communities for those navigating spiritual abuse or religious deconstruction. Healing is possible, and your story is valid. What This Episode Covers:Monte's personal turning point: the moment her belief system crackedThe mental health toll of religious trauma and spiritual fear in childhoodHow Christian nationalism shaped her worldview—and why she walked awayThe psychological impact of purity culture on women's identity and self-worthWhy “submission,” obedience, and modesty were never about holinessThe danger of unquestioned authority in faith-based systemsHow spiritual teachings can be twisted to uphold patriarchy and white supremacyThe difference between faith and fear—and how to tell which one's guiding youWhat the Bible actually says (and doesn't) about women, sexuality, and powerWhy reclaiming curiosity is the key to healing religious traumaA call for compassion, critical thinking, and honest self-examination—no matter what you believe LIKE, SUBSCRIBE & SHARE your thoughts in the comments!__________________↳ YouTube↳ Apple Podcast↳ Spotify↳ Instagram↳ Tiktok↳ Facebook__________________Patrick Custer – Host↳ Instagram: @thepatrickcuster↳ TikTok: @thepatrickcuster↳ YouTube: @thepatrickcuster↳ Facebook: @thepatrickcuster↳ Website: linktr.ee/patrickcusterMonte Mader – Guest↳ Insta: @montemader↳ Facebook: @themontemader↳ Youtube: @montemader↳ Tiktok: @montemader↳ X: @montemader__________________Promises Behavioral Health – Treatment for addiction, mental health/trauma:↳ Admissions: (888) 648-4098↳ Insta: @promises_bh↳ URL: www.promisesbehavioralhealth.comMental Health America:↳ URL: www.mhanational.org

ollowing on from opening her exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, which continues until August, the US-born, Berlin-based artist Christine Sun Kim this week opened a show in London in collaboration with Thomas Mader. The exhibition, 1880 THAT, uses a notorious historic conference in Milan in 1880, which effectively outlawed sign language in Deaf education, as a springboard to explore languages and stigma in Deaf and hearing cultures today. Ben Luke discusses the show with Kim and Mader. In Abu Dhabi, the latest museum devoted to the interactive art of the Japanese collective teamLab opens this week in the Saadiyat Cultural District. The Art Newspaper's reporter in the Middle East, Melissa Gronlund, has visited the museum and tells us more about teamLab's newest immersive experience. And this episode's Work of the Week is Young Woman seated at a Virginal (1670-75), a painting by Jan Vermeer that may be the very last picture he ever made. Our special correspondent, Martin Bailey, tells us how new conservation of the picture has revealed that 17th-century pollution may hold the key to dating the painting.1880 THAT: Christine Sun Kim and Thomas Mader, Wellcome Collection, London, until 16 November; Christine Sun Kim: All Day All Night is at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, until 6 July.teamLab: Phenomena, Abu Dhabi, opens 18 April. From Rembrandt to Vermeer: Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection, H'ART Museum, Amsterdam, until 24 August.Subscription offer: enjoy a three-month digital subscription to The Art Newspaper for just £3/$3/€3. In this episode, Emily connects with Monte Mader, a Nashville-based fitness professional, metal vocalist, turned speaker and educator. Raised in alt-right evangelicalism and theology, she now uses her unique perspective to challenge harmful doctrines and shed light on America's fundamentalist movement and its impact in American history and policy. A lifelong gym enthusiast and advocate for personal development, Monte's work in fitness, music and teaching all has one goal- to dismantle harmful institutions and ideology and to challenge people to personal growth physically, spiritually and intellectually. Emily and Monte discuss Monte's journey growing up in fundamentalism, grappling with familial abuse, tackling oppressive religious structures, and transitioning to activism. As well as the deconstruction process, the dangers of right-wing politics merging with religion, the historical context of systemic oppression, and the urgent need for organized action and mobilization against current threats to democracy, and so much more! Rhea Mader and I chat about the mysteries that this time of year brings forth. We start out with some light-hearted remembrances of Halloween costumes, and then we ask each other the famous (perhaps seasonal) question: Do you believe in ghosts? Plus, why do some say there are two separate autumn seasons, and why is it said that “veil is thin” this time of year? Finally, Rhea shares an experience with the ancestors of the land, and we mull over our own impending ancestorhood. https://consciouslivingconsciousdying.com/ https://www.instagram.com/consciouslivingconsciousdying https://www.facebook.com/consciouslivingconsciousdying https://www.linkedin.com/in/rheamader/
