What if the faith you were raised in wasn't chosen but programmed? Whether you're questioning everything or doubling down on your beliefs, this landmark 200th episode is for you. Monte Mader's journey from Christian nationalist-in-training to spiritual deconstructionist isn't an attack it's an invitation. An invitation to examine what you inherited, what you believe, and why. No matter where you land, this conversation might challenge something you've never dared to question and that's exactly why you need to hear it.Spirituality can be a powerful source of comfort, connection, and personal growth but when faith is distorted by fear, control, or coercion, it can leave deep emotional wounds. Religious trauma doesn't come from belief itself, but from environments where questioning is punished, conformity is demanded, and individuals especially children are not given the right to consent. This kind of trauma often shows up as chronic guilt, anxiety around “disobedience,” fear-based obedience, or a loss of personal identity. Whether you've grown up in a high-control religious group or entered one later in life, warning signs may include black-and-white thinking, spiritual manipulation, isolation from non-believers, and teachings that prioritize hierarchy over compassion. It's important to remember: religion is not inherently harmful but unchecked power within it can be. If you're questioning your experience, you're not alone. Resources like Reclamation Collective, The Religious Trauma Institute, and Dr. Marlene Winell's Recovery from Religion offer education, support, and healing communities for those navigating spiritual abuse or religious deconstruction. Healing is possible, and your story is valid. What This Episode Covers:Monte's personal turning point: the moment her belief system crackedThe mental health toll of religious trauma and spiritual fear in childhoodHow Christian nationalism shaped her worldview—and why she walked awayThe psychological impact of purity culture on women's identity and self-worthWhy “submission,” obedience, and modesty were never about holinessThe danger of unquestioned authority in faith-based systemsHow spiritual teachings can be twisted to uphold patriarchy and white supremacyThe difference between faith and fear—and how to tell which one's guiding youWhat the Bible actually says (and doesn't) about women, sexuality, and powerWhy reclaiming curiosity is the key to healing religious traumaA call for compassion, critical thinking, and honest self-examination—no matter what you believe LIKE, SUBSCRIBE & SHARE your thoughts in the comments!__________________↳ YouTube↳ Apple Podcast↳ Spotify↳ Instagram↳ Tiktok↳ Facebook__________________Patrick Custer – Host↳ Instagram: @thepatrickcuster↳ TikTok: @thepatrickcuster↳ YouTube: @thepatrickcuster↳ Facebook: @thepatrickcuster↳ Website: linktr.ee/patrickcusterMonte Mader – Guest↳ Insta: @montemader↳ Facebook: @themontemader↳ Youtube: @montemader↳ Tiktok: @montemader↳ X: @montemader__________________Promises Behavioral Health – Treatment for addiction, mental health/trauma:↳ Admissions: (888) 648-4098↳ Insta: @promises_bh↳ URL: www.promisesbehavioralhealth.comMental Health America:↳ URL: www.mhanational.org

Recorded in front of a LIVE studio audience in Austi, TX!Join The Atheist Experience with Jamie Boone and Christy Powell and work through issues, lack of evidence for god, and religious trauma challenges. Caleb in OH, believes the Big Bang is evidence for god, and asks the hosts if atheists believe there is no evidence for god. Evidence that is meaningful, compelling or that stands up to scientific rigor has not been observed yet. The universe having a beginning is consistent with many religions. How is your religion any different?  Why would an all powerful and all loving god not show us something on this show? Call back with one good argument that is overwhelming. Yetmas in FL makes an analogy about god, people, and ants, and then asks why we are searching for god evidence when we have not even mapped 25% of the ocean floor. This is 25% more than before there was science. AJ in MN asks the hosts what they used to justify the Bible when they used to believe. Christy described having to read a chronological Bible that noted the numerical differences realizing it was not inerrant. Jamie never looked into the claims, and when he finally did, he became an atheist. How many talking animals do you need in a story before you realize it is not literally true? Terry in NY wants to know how to bat away the indoctrination and fear of hell. Why would we lose sleep over the Christian hell if we are not worried about the Hindu hell? Your nervous system does not need to be argued with and it is okay to struggle with this distress. Adult logic may not work with your first early childhood concept of hell. Recognizing this conflict is the first step to acceptance. Is it fear or is it guilt that is so scary? A book called, Leaving the Fold, by Marlene Winell is a good place to start along with Recovering from Religion where they are trained to help through this struggle.  Jon in Canada says that the 10 Commandments are necessary for society to function and prove the existence of god. How can you tell me that they eradicated slavery? How do you explain the basis of Chinese civilization before the Ten Commandments?Katie in OK is trying to determine if she has religious trauma or if it is being raised in a hetero culture. Living in a religious society is almost certain to cause cuts and scars. Having to pretend to believe in something you don't believe in can be traumatizing. If it hurts, you are allowed to have compassion on yourself and do something about it.Barry in GA says that faith is the basis for believing along with the word of god. Where does faith come from? What does it mean if something that you read moves you? What other creation stories from other faiths have you read? Why do you use faith for the Bible but not anything else? What would you say to someone that has faith in Allah?Josef asks the hosts their opinion on the scriptures that condemn homosexuality. Jamie disagrees with the verses. Christy finds these verses to be a big problem and is what caused him to challenge Christianity. If you remove a person's exposure to a type of person, it is easier to make them hate that type of person. Thank you for tuning in! Do you wonder why your'e having such a hard time if you've left your religion? Do you think it's silly to struggle when all you've experienced is a “shift of beliefs”? Ashley and Emily are joined (again!) by Shikha Patel, MSW, LCSW, and Anna Marchese, MSW, MCSW, from Collaborative Insights. At the top of the episode, Shikha discusses cultural trauma at length - what it is as a collective trauma, how you can identify it in your life, and how to navigate how that trauma has affected your life and healing journey. We discuss how cultural trauma varies from other types of trauma, how it is passed down generationally, and how it affects norms, traditions, values, holidays, and more. Shikha discusses how culturagrams are great tools to use as an assessment to identify foundational parts of cultural identity. We then head into a discussion led by Anna, who grew up as a pastor's kid and has a particular interest in religious trauma as a licensed therapist, reiki healer, and yoga instructor. Religious trauma is something that many people experience, and often reflect on in adulthood as they may want to continue spiritual practices in their current lives but are hesitant due to religious trauma in their past. Religious Trauma is a clinical term given by Dr. Marlene Winell to the condition experienced by many who leave an authoritarian indoctrination, where symptoms can be cognitive, emotional, social, and cultural. These are layered topics with a lot of nuance as everyone's experience is unique and valid. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Dr. Marlene Winell  knows all too well that exiting a controlling religion can trigger a devastating life crisis. As a college student, she moved away from the fire and brimstone fundamentalist Christianity she was raised in, and the fallout of her exodus was so dramatically upending that she felt compelled to dedicate her life's work to studying the very phenomenon that she'd later coin:  ‘Religious Trauma Syndrome.' In this episode of A Little Bit Culty she chats with us about symptoms that arise in response to traumatic or stressful religious experiences, and what can be helpful along the road to recovery after leaving the fold. More About Our Guest: Dr. Winell is a psychologist, educator, and writer whose background includes 30 years of experience in human services, in both community and academic settings. She holds a doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and is the author of Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving their Religion. Leaving the Fold has become a leading self-help book in the field of religious recovery - and examines the effects of authoritarian religion (namely fundamentalist Christianity) on individuals who leave the faith.  She's also the founder of Journey Free organization, which is dedicated to helping people transition out of harmful religions, recover from trauma, and rebuild their lives. She divorced her husband and religion, went back to school to become a registered professional counselor, and connected with Dr. Marlene Winell who coined the term Religious Trauma (Dr. Winell is now her friend and mentor). Then she founded the Conference on Religious Trauma (CORT) and this October the Shameless Sexuality: Life After Purity Culture online conference.Fight for Children's Rights: Congress Needs to Pass Children's Rights ActConnect with Janice SelbieHer Podcast: https://www.divorcing-religion.com/religious-trauma-podcastWebsite: https://www.divorcing-religion.comIG: https://instagram.com/wisecounsellor?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@janiceselbie?_t=8UZKbpvXcHG&_r=1Connect with Andrew PledgerLinktree: https://www.liinks.co/4ndrewpledger Hosted on Acast. "For the following three reasons I lay out and explore below, leaving one's faith or religion is fraught with potential peril and difficulties. 1. The trauma caused by deconstructing, and finally making the difficult decision to leave your former faith behind, can be traumatic and psychologically debilitating. Psychologist and author Dr Marlene Winell is an expert on religious trauma syndrome (RTS). In an article on the subject, she maintains that RTS “is a function of both the chronic abuses of harmful religion and the impact of severing one's connection with one's faith and faith community.” She points out that not only can religion be the source of much trauma, in addition it is all-pervasive, affecting literally every aspect and area of our lives. In the case of evangelical Christianity, for example, it affected our relationships with others who were non-Christians, since we tended to view them as potential converts. We couldn't just have a “normal” relationship with no strings attached; there was always an agenda — and it wasn't always hidden. Every non-believer we came into contact with represented a chance for proselytization, and oftentimes, if they didn't want to hear about the gospel, the relationship was terminated. Either that, or we drove them away with our constant referrals to the Bible, the gospel message, or with repeated invitations to church or Christian events. Some Christians have even lost their jobs, or co-workers have severed relationships with them, because they wouldn't stop proselytizing at work. Religion can also affect many people's sex lives; as an example, the evangelical purity culture can have a potentially crippling effect on one's self-image, sexuality, marriage, and relationships with sexual partners. As a young person raised in this context, in an effort to avoid falling into “sexual sin” before marriage, the herculean effort of suppressing one's normal and natural sex drive can do incredible damage. And if one does fall into sexual sin and loses their virginity prior to marriage, there is oftentimes a tremendous amount of shame and guilt attached to that act." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

This week we sit down with Elad Nehorai. Elad has spent most of his adult life creating and nurturing communities. From the time he started a small online arts magazine (before such a thing was common) in college, to his efforts as an online marketer for startups, to his viral campaign "I Have A Therapist," to his work with Hevria, a community for creative Jews, and Torah Trumps Hate, a community for progressive orthodox Jews, he cares about nothing more than connecting people who are desperately looking for a community that doesn't exist in the physical world. After spending over a decade in Hasidic Judaism Elad is reimagining his faith. We invite you to listen in, as we explore his journey as a creative finding a new path in his life thereafter. This week's guest is psychologist, author and speaker Dr Marlene Winell, who--in many ways, it could be said--almost literally "wrote the book" on the subject of religious trauma syndrome, or RTS. As you'll no doubt hear us discuss, this recording took place prior to the unfortunate cancellation of the CORT2020 conference which was to be held in Vancouver, BC. Dr Winell was meant to be one of the keynote speakers there. Dr Winell authored the important book in 1994 entitled Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving Their Religion. Off the back of that work, she went on to write articles identifying RTS, and has since devoted her life and practice to helping individuals who have left religion and struggle with various aspects of RTS. I am sure that you will find this interview insightful, challenging and helpful on your journey out of religion, whatever that may look like. Counselor ("counsellor" for the Canucks) Janice Selbie joins Chuck and Brady for a insightful, practical conversation on grieving God. Janice came from a ultra-Fundamentalism background that became hyper-charged after marrying her now ex-husband. While working at a bookstore, she befriended a group of Mennonite (Anabaptist) women and began wearing head coverings like they did out of a obedience to the Bible. Around the time of her divorce, Janice encountered traumas that shook her from her cognitive dissonance, and she left the faith. Next, she pursued a counselor degree, met Dr. Marlene Winell, and now specializes in freeing people from the mental grips of Fundamentalism.   In this episode, Janice shares practical ways to recover from religion healthily, the importance of rituals to symbolize the end of one's Fundamentalism, and how cognitive behavioral therapy can be very useful. Welcome everyone to episode 211 of the Everyone’s Agnostic podcast. I’m Cass Midgley. I'm going to die. A big thanks to each and every one of our Patreon and Paypal supporters.  Today my guest is Peter Montoya. This is the 3rd time I've had Peter on the show. You can get his full story back on episode 130. He was also featured briefly in episode 163, on Dr. Marlene Winell's second appearance. Peter is all about living a fulfilled life and he sees community as an integral part of achieving that goal. For us ex-Christians, church used to be the main place we connected with a community. Some of us had bad experiences but it's likely that even those were the exception and not the rule. I know I used to look forward to seeing everyone and feeling that energy of people gathering every Sunday morning. But what now? How do we find community after faith is gone? Peter has some tips on how to do just that. We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. We think the world is a better place when more people live by sight, not by faith. Please subscribe to our podcast, and leave a review wherever you listen to podcasts. Also, we offer these podcasts freely. And your support truly makes a difference. You can support us monetarily in two easy ways: you can pledge a monthly donation through Patreon. that’s www.patreon.com/eapodcast,  or leave a lump-sum donation through PayPal at our website, www.everyonesagnostic.com. We taped this conversation on June 25th, 2018. The intro music is by Dave Weckl called "Just Groove Me" Featuring "People" by Barbara Streisand.  The outro song: You've Got A Friend In Me (From "Toy Story"/ Soundtrack) by Lyle Lovett & Randy Newman. Thanks for listening, and be a yes-sayer to what is. Perhaps it's not about finding community but creating one. If we wait to be found or to find our people, we could possibly die waiting. Some of us have the means to CREATE a community. As you'll hear in this conversation with Peter Montoya, there are steps one can take to create a recurring meetup with friends. One way that you can calm yourself around this audacious and ominus undertaking is that even if you just meet once a month, at the end of a year you can look back and see 12 meetings that changed lives. It doesn't have to be a big deal or life changing each meeting. It's the 30,000 foot view that says, "we make the path by walking it." One foot in front of the other and before you know it, deep relationships are formed, and enriching exchanges are had. For those who find themselves in remote locations, there is the internet. Charles, a long-time friend and supporter of the show, started a virtual community that meets every other week on a platform called Zoom that functions like Skype where you can see and hear the other participants. We have listeners all over the English speaking world and many don't have community in their geographical proximity, so Facebook and groups like Charles' EA Virtual Small Group can help serve such people with a means to connect to others. It's SO important. . Dr. Mark Hyman said, "The power of community to create health is far greater than any physician, clinic or hospital." If you're interested in being a part of the communities that have formed around this podcast, you can message me on Facebook or email me at midgley.cass@gmail.com and I'll help you get connected to virtual communities and support groups specifically designed to encourage people who no longer believe in the supernatural, are opening their eyes and ears and saying yes to reality and they're feeling the void of lost community. Relationships are a two way street. They will be dynamic in direct relation to how honest both parties are. If you've done the deep, hard work of accepting yourself, you bring that unhidden person to the gathering. If you encounter someone who has also done the deep, hard work of accepting their self, you will be able to assess the real potential of that relationship. A natural byproduct of accepting one's self--flaws and all--is a greater capacity to accept others--flaws and all. The joy and depth of a community is directly correlated to how honest the participants have been able to get. A Christian author, Catholic actually, who I respected when I was a Christian and still do, is Henri Nouwen. He said this, "Solitude is very different from just a 'time-out' from our busy lives. Solitude is the very ground from which community grows. Whenever we pray alone, study, read, write, or simply spend quiet time away from the places where we interact with each other directly, we are potentially opened for a deeper intimacy with each other." We're learning that this tension that we all feel between introvert and extrovert is not black and white. We're all both. We get energy from time alone and from time with others. As the steward of your own happiness and health, only you know what you need and your needs are unique to you. We're learning that the "one size fits all" mentality of conformity religions is not honest nor real. Thus, we are free to navigate our relationships and free to let others navigate theirs. Some of us are uncomfortable with the thought of Sunday Assembly or Oasis or any kind of forced intimacy, other's love being in these gatherings, engaging with others, meeting new people. However, most of us are both--sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. And that's my point. As in most things I say, I almost always end up saying "you do you." The acceptance of what is, the acceptance ourselves, each other, the form the moment is taking, empower us to navigate this tumultuous, unpredictable world that we could be yanked from at any moment, give us the smile we need to calm down, to pick our battles and our fucks better, to get excited about the right things, to give ourselves permission to take in this magical moment, with these beautiful disgusting people, eating this food that we'll only shit out later, drinking these drinks that we may regret in the morning, acknowledging the unavoidable awkwardness that occurs when any two people try to walk up to each other and make something happen. This is the dance. This is our lives. May we find each other, accept each other and benefit somehow from the shared experience that is the human condition. http://thriveunion.org/

Cass Midgley and Dr. Bob Pondillo interview Dr. Marlene Winell. This is our second interview with Marlene, back in March of 2015 on Episode 35. She is the founder and director of JourneyFree.org. Journey Free is dedicated to helping people transition out of harmful religions, recover from trauma, and rebuild their lives.  They develop programs for both individuals and groups. From their website, "If you are recovering from religious harm, we have great respect for your strength and courage. Please know that you are not alone and things can get better." We're honored to have her back on the show; she's been helping people recover from religion for 23 years. Born and raised overseas by missionary parents, Marlene was immersed in fundamentalist Christianity from childhood. She moved away from that religion during college and found the transition process so difficult and intriguing that she began to research it professionally. In 1994 she published Leaving the Fold: a Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving their Religion which has become a leading self-help book in the field of religious recovery. In 2011, she coined the term for the condition she calls Religious Trauma Syndrome. She holds a bachelor and a masters in Social Ecology from the University of California, Irvine, with an emphasis on marriage and family relations. She earned her doctorate from Penn State in Human Development and Family Studies. Her area of special study was programs to enhance human development in adulthood.Dr. Winell has taught courses in adult development at Penn State, Colorado State University, and  Boulder Graduate School and University of California, Santa Cruz. She was licensed as a psychologist in Colorado where she had a private therapy practice. She also worked as a psychologist in Australia for seven years before relocating to California. Her primary focus is on developing services for recovering from religious harm. She believes this is important for individuals and for society to move forward. In this talk, we tackle issue of post-religious sexuality, sexism, and some really helpful tips on how to communicate and relate to religious family members around this issue. Before we get into our talk with Marlene, I had a short 15 minute talk with Peter Montoya. We had Peter on back at the end of 2016 on episode 130. Peter is a true go-getter. He has an appetite for life and emotional health that sets him apart. If he wasn't such a genuine soul and a true friend, I'd pigeonhole him as one of the motivational speakers types, like a Tony Robbins or something. But the thing about these types of people, is if they don't fall into their own ego and greed and become cheap posers and charlatans, they have a lot to offer and their energy and passion is contagious. And Peter is one of those who has all the assets of motivated person without the masks and lies and deceit. He was there for me when I was drowning several months back and was a real life-line for me. He's got a project going that is not only relevant for Californians, where he lives, but the principles for building community that come through in this conversation will be helpful to all of us that hungry for intimate friendships post-Christianity. I know you're gonna like him. But more importantly, you may be quickened to do something in your town that fosters essential relationships. Seriously, as humans, we are not going to be our best selves or truly develop character or live up to our potential if we're not engaged with honest, intimate friendships on a regular basis. This is science. This is evolution. And I mean that in the meaningful sense too. Like more laughter, more looking forward to the coming week because of the events we have on our calendar. If you're feeling like your calendar is stale, you're starting to get bored with or even hopeless about the future, the ideas we discuss here may energize you to make some calls, host some get-togethers, and initiate ways to elevate your lifestyle by meeting and involving cool people in your lives. So I'm happy to bring these two outstanding guests on and I'm confident that your life will be enriched is some way. First my one-on-one with Peter Montoya, then Bob and I talk with Dr. Marlene Winell. We taped the conversation with Marlene on July 29th, 2017, and my talk with Peter on August 7th. Marty grew up the oldest of 9 boys in a very devout Catholic family. Marty became agnostic in 1996 and as of 2011 considers himself an atheist. He is one of the friendliest, most helpful people you'll meet. I often notice him encouraging other atheists & agnostics on social media (some of them newly deconverted). Marty offers fascinating specifics about his Catholic upbringing. Just like so many deconverts, Marty took his faith very seriously. Trusting God to provide following a significant injury was a major turning point. He married at 19 years old and has been married 29 years now! His wife is a graphic designer, he is an IT developer. He likes hiking, the Seattle Seahawks, plays a little guitar and is a science enthusiast. He is also a board member with Sunday Assembly in Olympia, Washington. His daughter graduated from college in 2016 and his son is a Junior in college.   Marty's Blog:  https://nohell4u.wordpress.com martymcdonald@outlook.com   Richard Rubenstein https://www.amazon.com/When-Jesus-Became-God-Christianity/dp/0156013150   John Shelby Spong https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=rescuing+the+bible+from+fundamentalism+by+john+shelby+spong&sprefix=rescuing+the+bible+%2Cstripbooks%2C198&crid=1YUJMOE861ZGS   Marlene Winell http://marlenewinell.net   Ryan Bell & Life After God http://www.lifeaftergod.org https://www.facebook.com/ourlifeaftergod/

Bob and Cass interview Rodney and Trish Thompson—a religiously mixed couple. He’s atheist, she’s Catholic and we discuss how they make it work.  In this age when so many fearful people run to their polemic corners, demonize those that are different, and are unable to compromise, listen or learn from their opposites, Rod and Trish Thompson model a real-life example of how it can work and work well. To borrow from 1 Peter 4:8, “Love covers a multitude of faults.” In other words, when we love someone, we’re much more prone to overlook their faults, cut them some slack, and give them the benefit of the doubt. In this context, we’re less likely to take things personal, be easily offended, or retaliate. Love is that cache or freecell that absorbs the human difference instead of keeping it in play, further escalating the blow for blow mania. Love also helps us respect the other person’s right to think differently. It may even help us realize that that person’s different perspective does not necessarily have to be a threat to our perspective, unless it reveals weakness in it and can then serve as a catalyst to amend and strengthen our own. Staying in the room with difference has a way of maturing us and deflating the insecure ego that desperately needs to be right. The Thompson’s give us a window into how this type of harmony might be realized in religiously mixed marriages. We taped this episode on July 31st, 2016. She’s a counselor for those recovering from religious trauma. It’s our most poplular episode to date. She called and asked me to plug a retreat she’s got coming up September 9-12th in Berkeley, California. More info is available on her website, journeyfree.org, I’ll put a link in the show notes. A Journey Free Retreat weekend is a chance to come together in a small group with the shared goal of taking steps to recover from harmful religion.  Led by Dr. Winell, it provides a safe place to process experiences with the support of others who understand. The 3 day program includes presentations, discussions, and guided activities to facilitate both intellectual insight and emotional growth, providing a leap forward in one’s personal development.  Getting through the fear, grief, anger and stress isn’t easy but you don’t have to do it alone. The cost of the retreat is scaled according to your income, so it’s gonna cost between $500 to $700 and they’ll even work out a payment plan. She just wants you to come.  So check that out at  http://journeyfree.org/retreats/ I also want to mention that I was the featured guest on The Wayward Atheists podcast recently, episode 12. One of the hosts of that show is David E up in Canada. He was our guest on episode 83.  So check out episode 12 of the Wayward Atheists, available wherever you listen to podcasts. http://waywardatheists.com/category/podcast/ I also want to thank Carol Kuruvilla, Religion Associate Editor for the Huffington Post, for including the Everyone’s Agnostic podcast in her article, “17 Great Podcasts For The Spiritually Curious.” Most of the other podcasts listed there are either specific to a religion or inter-faith. I believe the only atheist podcast on the list are this one and Freethought Radio hosted by former guest of this show, Dan Barker (that’s episode 72), and his wife Annie Laurie Gaylor.  Huff Post article featuring Everyone’s Agnostic I would also like to point to Sam Harris’ recent podcast episode 41 on his show called “Waking Up.” The episode is titled Faith in Reason and features guest Eric Weinstein. It’s been 11 years since Harris published his book, “The End of Faith,” and he has continued to explore the complexities of Faith and Reason and this particular episode really captures these tensions well.  Sam Harris’ Waking Up podcast

Guest: Dr. Marlene Winell , author of “Leaving the Fold,” and founder of journeyfree.org.  Marlene was the daughter of Christian missionaries in China with the Assemblies of God.  She left Christianity later in life due to the sexism, the notion of original sin, the dichotomy of saved and damned, and the broken promises within scripture.  She now counsels people and leads retreats for those damaged by religion.  She calls it Religious Trauma Syndrome or RTS.   Leaving one's religion can be a difficult, painful and lonely pilgrimage, but the payoffs are great.  As Marlene writes in her book, “…there was no turning back. The mental and emotional doors to the future had been opened. The honesty and gut-level confrontation with my humanness - the good, the bad, and the ugly - was delicious.”   Subscribe to our podcast on iTunes, Stitcher and most podcast platforms.  Support us at Patreon.com    This show was taped on February 28th, 2015.   Credits: "Towering Mountain of Ignorance" introduction by Hank Green https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3v3S82TuxU "Never Know" by Jack Johnson “Fix You” by Coldplay   We discussed: Religious Trauma Syndrome Christian Fundementalism The Jesus Movement Calvary Chapel The perpetual urgency of the return of Christ (aka Bad Prom Date) The pain of leaving religion is correlated to the degree in which one was invested in it Shattered Assumption Theory Walt Whitman – Song of Myself Quote from Charles Eliot Norton: “One may sigh for all that one loses in giving up the old religion…but the new irreligion is the humaner, honester, and simpler thing, and a affords a better theory of life and a more solid basis for morality.”  8 Logical Fallacies That Fuel Anti-Science Sentiments exchristian.net journeyfree.org   extra: Marlene’s open letter to Sarah Palin 2008

In this episode of Mental Podcast, Michelle and Seth catch up during their Mental Minute. It had been two weeks since they have sat down together so there was a bit to talk about. For example, Michelle has published her debut book, Into The Gray: The Mental and Emotional Aftermath of Spiritual Deconstruction and is a contributor for a new book, Before You Lose Your Mind: Deconstructing Bad Theology in Church! Both books are available on Amazon now. Then the discussion around Religious Trauma Syndrome begins. This is a very large topic; so large that it could in fact be its show. Dr. Marlene Winell, a leading research coined "Religious Trauma Syndrome" and defined it as: the condition experienced by people who are struggling with leaving an authoritarian, dogmatic religion and coping with the damage of indoctrination." Whether you are currently involved in a faith or not, RTS refers to the psychological damage that is the result of religious experiences, messages, doctrines and teachings. Michelle and Seth review frequently experienced symptoms of people suffering with RTS and then spend time reviewing examples of the different aspects of religious/spiritual abuse. For example, "it's possible that you've experienced religious/spiritual abuse if: You have left a religious institution and as a result have lost relationships and/or been punished in some way." This week's lived experience story is brought to you by Karl and Laura Forehand. Karl was Seth's pastor for a year or so while he was in high school. Karl started deconstructing and shares what this process has been like over the years. Laura shares how her children were impacted and how her personal relationships changed as a result.' Information in this series is being drawn from the following books: Traumatized by Religious Abuse by Connie Baker Sacred Wounds by Teresa Pasquale Leaving the Fold by Marlene Winell *Coming Up Next* : For the month of May, Michelle and Seth will be highlighting Religious Trauma Syndrome (RTS). Next week will likely involve the cycle of trauma. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/mental-podcast/exclusive-content
