At some point, you reach a place in your career where work that once felt difficult is now fairly simple and projects that would have kept you up all night several years ago are now quite manageable. You feel in total control of your process and mastery of your domain.Sounds great, right? However, it's in these moments that you are potentially in danger of slipping into stasis. Similar to muscles that aren't exercised, when you don't sufficiently challenge yourself, your creative process can atrophy. In the book The Art of Possibility, Benjamin and Rosamund Zander relay a story about the great composer Igor Stravinsky. His work was intentionally very challenging to play and required both remarkable technical skill and musical feel. He is once reported to have exclaimed, “I don't want the sound of someone playing this passage, I want the sound of someone trying to play it.” Some of the best creative work is crafted not when someone is in complete mastery of their domain but when they are operating just on the edge of it, taking risks, moving just a bit faster and beyond their technical capabilities. As you consider your work right now, how in control do you feel, and do you believe that is a net positive or a danger to your body of work?Don't measure creative accomplishment. Measure creative growth.QUESTIONAre you ever operating on the edge of your abilities? Where might you take a creative risk today?
The Art of Possibility by Rosamund Zander is an incredible read. In the book, a story is shared about Pablo Picasso that got me thinking and I hope will get you thinking as well. In this episode, you will learn the following: What assumptions are you aware of? What Picasso said to the man on the train to elevate your thinking. Why you hold back on what you hold back on. The Art of Possibility written by Benjamin and Rosamund Zander is one of the most artistically influenced personal development books I've ever read. It's core principles are similar to many other self help books but this one has a twist I've never seen or heard and it's beautify written, it inspired me to be more emotionally, vulnerable, it made me want to connect with people in this realm of art and possibility. It's a very fun read. Roz and Ben have gone to so many countries and participated in some dream land experiences. In this book, the Zanders outline 12 practices that will help you to escape living a measured life guided by external demands and expectations to living an internally guided life, one enriched by your creative pursuits and limitless possibilities. A life where anything is possible. A life of possibility.
For the past couple of years, I’ve been doing a lot of personal work, self-reflection, and goal-setting. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m a big fan of Michael Hyatt, and one of the most powerful exercises that I’ve done with him is around limiting beliefs and liberating truths. I like this definition of limiting beliefs from changingminds.org: “Limiting beliefs are those which constrain us in some way. Just by believing them, we do not think, do or say the things that they inhibit. And in doing so we impoverish our lives.” I also like the visual provided by this quote from Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander, authors of The Art of Possibility: “Every story you tell yourself is based on a network of assumptions. Draw a different frame around the same set of circumstances and new pathways come into view.” From my perspective, identifying and understanding your limiting beliefs is absolutely fundamental to achieving your goals. If you have a goal that seems out of reach—no matter how big or small—maybe now is the time to take a closer look at what is standing in your way. I hope that sharing my experiences and guiding you through an exercise in this podcast episode will help reframe your beliefs and move you forward to achieve what’s in your heart. You’ve got this! Food for the heart and soul this week from two great teachers. Marianne Williamson - NY Times Bestselling author of Return to Love teachers us now to turn our Tears to Triumph. And the incredible Rosamund Zander shares her still fresh perspective of not believing all the stories we tell ourselves in Pathways to Possibilities. 15 years after The Art of Possibilities - this is just the reminder we need. This Shine On show airs Sunday July 17 on 100.7 WHUD
“The realm of possibility is predicated on the idea that we create our lives. And of course, we're not victims of anything. We have the power to create stories. And in this realm we're connected in a different way than we are as in the child or in the downward spiral. We define ourselves as connected to others. We do not define ourselves a individuals trying to survive. We define ourselves as living in an abundant world where nothing is personal. The reason you'll see that the world is abundant is because when you understand that you're creating your life, you can open so many different stories and come from so many different points of view that life is always abundant.” – Ros ZanderAs a family therapist and executive coach, Rosamund Zander develops models for leadership and effective action. Her work is detailed in her books, The Art of Possibility and Pathways to Possibility See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Today’s episode features one of Anthony’s all time favorite conversations on the podcast. He’s speaking with Rosamund Zander, a family therapist and leadership coach who specializes in helping people recognize and move away from what she calls their “child stories” so they can be free of the limiting beliefs and scarcity mindsets that hold them back from giving the best of themselves to the world. Anthony wanted to bring this conversation to you because he feels that too many people in the sales arena make the story all about them when in reality, they could be adding so much more to the interactions they engage in on a daily basis. Please, take the time to listen - there is a lot to learn from Rosamund Zander. Change your thinking from dealing with circumstances to exploring possibilitiesClick To Tweet The unseen force of our child stories often dominate our lives. Rosamund Zander believes that every person is born with the self-centered approach to life that is characteristic of a child. Everything is about them. Every question, every circumstance, every opportunity, every pain - it’s all about them. But her contention is that if we stay in that child story as we begin to grow up we get stuck in ways of perceiving the world that are not helpful and do not bring service and love to the world. For her, the goal is to move out of our child stories and into adult stories, to grow up in our thinking and perception of what’s going on around us. Anthony is quick to point out how crucial that awareness is to sales and the sales process, and you’ll get to hear all of it on this episode of In The Arena. You need to find a story that works for you. When you look at the events unfolding around you each day, do you see them as circumstances or obstacles - or do you see them as opportunities? Do you see the subtle difference between those two perceptions? One makes you the passive recipient of the results of forces outside your control while the other engages you with the happenings around you, to affect them, to change them, to mould them to a better outcome. Learn how to adjust your perception of the world around you to enable yourself to become an “actor” in it, from Rosamund Zander, on this episode. All you need to transform is a new story ~ Rosamund Zander, on this episodeClick To Tweet Many times our negative responses are rooted in fear or scarcity. It’s a natural perception left over from childhood. But the fact is that as adults we can see more and do more than we could when we were children. We are able to have an affect on the world around us, to make changes to the circumstances we face each day. We can see that the world is a place of incredible abundance, so we are able (if we choose to) to look beyond the circumstance to our role in it and determine what we will do to live in light of those truths. Rosamund Zander’s new book, “Pathways to Possibility” takes us deep into this shift in perspective to provide freedom and energy for every day. Be sure to hear her conversation with Anthony on this episode. Your sales career, your success, is entirely up to you. You hear all kinds of mantras in the sales world but this one is one of the most powerful to adopt: “Your success is up to you.” If you can make the mental shift that enables you take on that sort of confident attitude you’ll begin to view the rejections and hurdles you must overcome in new ways. You won’t see them as impediments, you’ll see them as lessons, tools, or opportunities that are beneficial to your personal growth and therefore, your future success. You’ll begin to take action like never before because you’ll be driven to accomplish the very best you can for yourself, your family, your company, and the customer you serve. Hear more on this subtle mindset shift on this episode. Why we get stuck in #fear and scarcity, with Rosamund Zander, on this episodeClick To Tweet Outline of this great episode
According to Benjamin and Rosamund Zander, "enrollment is about giving yourself as a possibility to others and being ready to catch their spark. It's about playing together as partners in a field of light..." Too often we hide and "take ourselves away" from life. We hide out in the back row of our life. "Remembering that you are going to die is the best way to avoid the trap that you have something to lose. You are already naked; there is no reason not to follow your heart." -- Steve Jobs Wherever authentic love is present, healing takes place. Affirm that: I am generative/creative. I am giving. I am producing new life. I am creating new ideas. I make a contribution. I enjoy grace and wholeness, passion, and compassion. We have a choice. Will we live in survival mode or in possibility mode?
