Penelope's Song: A Seventeenth Century Tale for a Twenty-First Century World by Carol J. DeMarsPenelope's Song: A Seventeenth-Century Tale for a Twenty-First-Century World occurred during the seventeenth-century golden age of the United Provinces of the Netherlands. With the country's wealth and superpower, why would a vivacious niece of a wealthy Dutch merchant hastily marry her father's brilliant student? Carol J. DeMars' book then took its readers to one of the least desirable outposts in the Dutch Empire when the new couple decided to sail across the dangerous Atlantic Ocean. The lovers arrived at the city of Nieuw Amsterdam, today's Manhattan. Penelope's Song also follows the story of an aristocratic English widow who traded her land of birth for New England, seeking liberty of conscience. She expects Sir Henry, her only son, to join her when the Civil War erupted in England. Loyal to the monarch who bestowed his knighthood, Sir Henry became a Cavalier fighting for King Charles I. Another war disrupted the lives of the Algonquian people that once flourished in the eastern woods of North America. Oliver Cromwell started a trade war for supremacy over the high seas which threatened to overthrow the vast Dutch empire and destabilize their lives again. Once again, drama stirs the life of the legendary couple Richard and Penelope Stout. Witness a story that combines romance, history, and thrill in Carol J. De Mars' book.Carol DeMars graduated from California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA. She was a sociology major interested in social change, the Bible, European church history, and the growth of American churches during colonial and pioneer periods. Carol earned a teaching credential at California State University, Northridge, and taught English and United States history for several years. When she decided to pursue research as an independent scholar, she returned to CSUN for further graduate studies and qualified to join Phi Kappa Phi, the prestigious national scholastic society. Carol now resides in Georgia. Penelope's Song: A Seventeenth-Century Tale for a Twenty-First Century World is her first book.www.BarnesAndNoble.com https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09513SYVB?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_RVXQ2BG0R88KGB9TA571https://www.demarspenelopessong.com/http://www.ReadersMagnet.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/83123cdrm.mp3

It started in Chicago, where Debra wrote and sang original musicals for her stuffed animals when she was very young. She began an illustrious theatrical career starring as Toto in a summer camp production of Wizard of Oz. Barely surviving head-to-toe fur in sweltering July heat, she already knew how to suffer for her art. https://debrawanger.com/ Debra studied acting at the nationally-acclaimed Piven Theatre Workshop with such talents as John Cusack, Joan Cusack, and Jeremy Piven. Her vocal training began at the Northwestern University vocal department while still attending high school. She declined an opera scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory in order to study musical theatre at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM.) She took a quarter off to work for a few months in live theatre. Fifteen productions later, she returned to school and graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University and received a Masters of Fine Arts in musical theatre from San Diego State University, where she graduated Phi Kappa Phi as a Marion Ross Scholar. Debra has performed in regional theatres and cabaret clubs across the country, most frequently in Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, and South Florida. In Professionally Speaking at the Off-Broadway, The Miami Herald hailed her “a comic sparkplug.” Her role in Triumph of Love won a KPBS-TV Patté award. Her one-woman show My Nights With George, Kurt & Cole, (co-written and directed by comic genius, Phil Johnson) was featured at various venues throughout Southern California and won Best New Play and Best Actress at the 2003 San Diego Actors Festival, and the San Diego Playbill Billie Award for Best Actress in a musical. In 2019, Debra won a San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award (Craig Noel) for Angels in America: Parts 1 & 2. She appears regularly in San Diego regional theatre, including: Angles in America, Handbagged, God of Vengeance at the La Jolla Playhouse, Hairspray, Footloose, Sound of Music, La Cage Aux Folles, Billy Elliot and White Christmas at San Diego Musical Theatre. Spring Awakening, My Fair Lady, On the 20th Century and Dogfight at Cygnet; Hamlet (Gertrude) at Intrepid; Titanic & Sunset Blvd. at Moonlight Amphitheatre; Permanent Collection at Mo’olelo; Full Monty (Vicki) at New Village Arts; Anything Goes! (Reno) Oliver! (Nancy) and Babes in Arms at Lyric Opera San Diego; Carousel and Sound of Music at Lawrence Welk; My Nights With George, Kurt & Cole (NCRT & 6th@Penn, AASD & Billie Awards); Debra studied at Tufts & CCM and holds a M.F.A. from SDSU. Her CD, Driving My Own Heart is available on Amazon & iTunes. She took hiatus from performing to explore the “other side of the table.” As a talent manager and at Creative Artists Agency, under world-famous super-agent Michael Ovitz, she helped to guide the careers of such actors as Donald Sutherland, Patrick Dempsey, Halle Berry, Alyssa Milano, and Antonio Banderas. Having been yelled at by some of the most powerful players in Hollywood, she decided that performing was just as difficult, but a lot more fun. Debra is a Certified Bulletproof Human Potential Coach, studying in a year-long program with the Bulletproof Certified Coach Training Program with Dave Asprey & Dr. Mark Atkinson. As a coach, Debra specializes in helping actors & creative types find a healthy lifestyle balance while maintaining an exciting, satisfying creative career (it can be done!) She co-hosted The Upgraded Woman Podcast with Lane Kennedy found on iTunes and UpgradedWoman.com. Debra travels the country speaking and working with young actors to learn healthy habits to set them on a course for a long, healthy career as as Resilient Actor! Her diverse career has also included work as an award-winning actor, director, producer, professor, best-selling author, disc jockey, law intern, arranger, choir director, radio producer, announcer, teacher, coach, housewife, last but exhaustively not least, mom. She plays the guitar, harp, and piano and spends any free-time (ha!) dabbling in cooking, aromatherapy, yoga, interior decorating, and chocolate. She lives in San Diego with her three children & Bernedoodle.

Resources: SETDA Slack Mindset by Carol Dweck Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Ken Robinson NEWS A large scale DDOS attack affected a large number of important and widely used sites on Friday, causing users to lose access to sites like Spotify, SoundCloud, Twitter and Shopify. The way these attacks usually work is that a hacker will overwhelm a particular site with junk traffic. However, in between the URL you enter into your browser, and the site's IP address, are what are known as DNS providers that route you to where you want to go. This time, the attack was made on one of those DNS providers--a company called Dyn--making the hack even worse and more widespread affecting many different sites instead of just a single one. In addition, the hack was executed by aggregating notoriously insecure Internet of Things devices, like home security cameras, into botnets. The White House says the Department of Homeland Security is looking into the breach. To make things even creepier, one security researcher told Techcrunch that the attack looks more like probing-- a deliberate attempt to test the defense capabilities of the sites. Darrell Etherington has the story in TechCrunch. ---- AT&T has agreed to buy Time Warner Cable in an $85.4 billion deal. The deal comes amidst a wave of consolidation in the media industry, including Comcast's acquisition of NBCUNiversal and Verizon's acquisition of Huffington Post and proposed acquisition of Yahoo. AT&T also recently acquired DirectTV for $48.5 billion. Time Warner's media properties include HBO, CNN, TNT and TBS. Michael De La Merced has the story for The New York Times. ---- A new study by Girls who Code and Accenture finds that, without significant intervention by educators, parents and policymakers, the proportion of computer scientists in the workforce who are women will decline from 24% to 22% by 2025. The proportion of women computer sciences has fallen from 37% in 1995. The report is optimistic, however, and concludes that women could account for 39% of computer scientists by 2025 if appropriate measures are taken. Jessica Guynn has the story in USA Today. ---- A Russian hacker suspected of intruding into American targets has been arrested in Prague, but the authorities have not released the suspect's name. But American officials familiar with the matter, but who asked for anonymity, told Ricky Lyman and Hana de Goeij at the New York Times that the suspect has not been linked to Russian intrusions into the Democratic National Committee. Two weeks ago, the Obama administration officially accused Russia of attempting to sway the U.S. elections by hacking into the DNC. ---- There is a sex scandal at the FCC. Fred Campbell at Forbes reports that a female employee working in the Office of Communications Business Opportunities (OCBO), which works to increase opportunities for minorities and women working in the telecommunications sector, was subjected to her male co-workers watching porn in the office. When she complained to her boss, Thomas Reed, the employee's complaint alleges that she was given lower quality assignments. An Inspector General's report into the employee's complaint conducted in 2012, which we're just finding out about now, concluded that watching porn, and the agency's subsequent response to it, violated various ethical and administrative rules. And Still, as Fred Cambpell at Forbes reports, the FCC did nothing outside of forcing the employee watching porn to resign. The FCC's legal team even attempted to dismiss the employee's case in federal court--a court that found that the employee had been subjected to “discriminatory intimidation, ridicule, and insult”. Fred Campbell has the story in Forbes. ---- Finally, The Center for Responsive Politics reported last week that Silicon Valley-based tech companies are outspending Wall Street on lobbying activities in DC by more than 2 to 1. According to the Center, Silicon Valley spent $49 million on lobbyists last year compared to just $19.7 million for the five largest banks. Seleha Moshin has the story for Bloomberg.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Stephen Peterson at the SuperState 2016 band festival. Dr. Peterson holds the distinguished honor as the current Director of Bands at the University of Illinois, a program that many consider to be one of, if not the most important collegiate band programs based on its history, accomplishments, and directors. Dr. Peterson was very gracious with his time, and offered some insight on moving into a new program, setting up a band for success, and his opinions on quality band literature. Dr. Peterson's Bio: Dr. Stephen G. Peterson was appointed Director of Bands at the University of Illinois in the fall of 2015. As Director of Bands, he conducts the Wind Symphony, leads the graduate wind conducting program, teaches courses in wind literature, and guides all aspects of one of the nation's oldest, largest, and most storied band programs. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Illinois he served as Director of Bands at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, for seventeen years. From 1988-1998 he served as Associate Director of Bands at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Peterson was also conductor of the renowned Northshore Concert Band. He held positions as Associate and Interim Director of Bands at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas and has several years of successful teaching experience in the public schools in Arizona. We are featuring double bassist Gaelen McCormick on today’s episode. Gaelen is a member of the Rochester Philharmonic, teaches at Nazareth College and the Eastman Community Music School and is the author of Mastering the Bow, a two-part series for bass. Part one is based on the violin studies of Franz Wohlfahrt, and part two features off-the-strings strokes. We had a wonderful conversation about her early years in music, studying with Jeff Turner for graduate school (and you can listen to Jeff on the podcast—he was a guest back on episode 26), structuring practice time, the George Vance Progressive Repertoire series, and many other topics. Before and after the interview, we feature Gaelen and Ed Paulsen performing a couple of Dave Anderson’s wonderful duets, and you can check out our interview with Dave on episode 75 of the podcast. About Gaelen: Ms. McCormick has been a member of the Rochester Philharmonic’s bass section since 1995. Before joining the RPO, she held positions with regional orchestras such as the Erie (PA) Philharmonic, the Binghamton Philharmonic and the Albany Symphony. Ms. McCormick has performed regularly with other major orchestras, including the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Syracuse Symphony. She holds degrees in performance from the Eastman School and Carnegie Mellon University. Teaching the double bass to students of all ages has become a significant part of Gaelen’s life. She joined the faculty of Nazareth College in 2010, and has been the bass instructor for the Eastman Community Music School since 2001. She enjoys working with talented high school aged string players in the summer at Eastman’s Music Horizons program where she teaches chamber music and gives bass lessons. In 2003, she was invited to teach for the year at Duquesne University’s City Music Center, a program for talented, pre-college students. Gaelen has given masterclasses and recitals at Ithaca College, Williams College, the College of St. Rose, and Roberts Wesleyan College. In 2013, she gave classes on double bass technique at both the International Society of Bassists convention in Rochester and the NYSSMA Winter Conference. “Mastering the Bow”, the first of three books on double bass bow technique, was published by Carl Fischer in 2013, and the second will be published during the 2014 season. Playing chamber music has been a passion for Ms. McCormick. Before moving to Rochester, she often performed with the St. Cecilia Chamber Orchestra (Albany, NY) as their sole bassist. During her tenure in Pittsburgh, she became the founding bassist of the Pittsburgh Live Music Chamber Orchestra. She was the founding member of the innovative string quintet “Gibbs and Main”, and recorded a cd of tango standards with them, and commissioned a new work for the ensemble by Judd Greenstein. In recent summers, she has been performing with the Music in the Mountains chamber orchestra, a festival based in Durango, Colorado. She is frequently invited to play chamber music with musicians from around the country in festivals such as the Roycroft Chamber Music Festival and the Syracuse New Music Ensemble. This summer, Ms. McCormick will make her debut appearance at the Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival. Gaelen has been involved in volunteering and arts advocacy, and is proud to be the representative for the RPO in the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians. She is honored to be a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda, groups recognizing and supporting excellence in the humanities and in music specifically. In her spare time, Gaelen enjoys kayaking, Argentine tango and West Coast swing dancing, and spending time with her toddler Clara.
